#How do I install Linux Mint Mate?

I'm trying to install Mate on my PC(i3 6th Gen, Intel graphics and BIOS Legacy mode), When making my USB bootable, I included the latest version of Linux Mint and modified it according to my PC's BIOS (Legacy and FAT32). I entered the BIOS and disabled Secure Boot. When booting from my USB, I selected "Start Linux Mint", I get the following error:

Failed to start gpu-manager.service
Failed to start lightdm.service

Help, please.

Update: My USB was broken and wouldn't boot properly.

✅ thank you @amber meadow

Verify ISO'S: #1367031929999986698 message

#

if your PC showed it had secure boot, then it's not legacy BIOS

@vocal mesa Check it

but anyway, let me know when you reach the linux mint live environment desktop successfully from USB.

Perfect, I'm checking the hash right now.

amber meadow
#

compare to mint website that

#

for the mate 64bit ISO listed shasum text there

vocal mesa
amber meadow
#

on the website it's the same for many months unless they make some last minute change on their end

vocal mesa
#

It looks nothing like the web hash.

#

I will download and boot again.

amber meadow
#

not on the USB, but on the HDD

#

use the powershell method

#

or other method

#

to save time downloading new again.

#

if the HDD one is not matching, then get new

vocal mesa
amber meadow
#

do the iso check on there i just explained it, refer to the Verify link that shows how using powershell.

vocal mesa
#

okey, perfect

#

They are not identical, I will download the iso again.

#

Where do you recommend I download it from? Torrent or mirrors?

#

I always choose kernel.org, I don't know if it has anything to do with it.(I always get the same error with lightdm and cpu-manager).

amber meadow
#

pick another mirror

vocal mesa
#

Download from another mirror, verify the hash, copy it to Ventoy, reboot, choose the USB to boot, load Ventoy and load Linux Mint. I don't know if I have to wait, but I will. I got a black screen when I hit "Start Linux Mint."

#

@amber meadow the black screen persists

amber meadow
#

hit your boot menu key at powerup, then choose plain usb, as shown. u may need to enable CSM/legacy in BIOS setup perhaps, if u only see uefi usb option

vocal mesa
#

I don't see that mode to start it like that

amber meadow
vocal mesa
amber meadow
#

what do you see?

#

when was the pc made?

vocal mesa
vocal mesa
#

only those options

amber meadow
#

oh ok, so it's probably pure legacy and should not be an issue to boot

#

you get the ventoy white screen right?

vocal mesa
#

Wait, I changed PCs to test if it was only my computer or the error also appeared on another one, it turned out that it also appeared on another PC (i.e. the 2012 one), this one has a 3rd gen i5 with Legacy Mode

vocal mesa
amber meadow
#

verify the iso from ventoy 2nd white screen.

#

sha256

vocal mesa
amber meadow
#

well obviously it's badly flashed then

vocal mesa
#

Wait, I'll try it on my main PC (6th gen i3 with UEFI)

amber meadow
#

if the original ISO checked out fine, but not on the usb, then u are not waiting long enough after the copy.

#

or the usb stick is just crap

vocal mesa
#

My Dragon Ball USB is not garbage.

amber meadow
#

wait one full minute after u copy the GOOD iso to the ventoy usb stick. dont touch it or do anything

amber meadow
#

or use diferent flash stick. same rules

vocal mesa
#

I burned my USB with Ventoy in GPT and FAT32 mode, copied the ISO and entered the boot menu.

#

sorry for the flash

#

I'm checking the hash on Ventoy

#

They don't look alike at all, I'll try to get in.

that's why it fails.

#

you can use the Windows app "Validrive" to test if a usb flash stick is "sick" or unreliable or fake. Validrive from Gibson Research.

also, im seeing UEFI capability here . idk if this is your target computer u wish to put linux on. (after getting GOOD usb), use UEFI mode when possible.

vocal mesa
#

Perfect, I'll buy a new USB, right now I want to try Linux Mint to see if I like it, I'm installing it on VMware

ok

vocal mesa
#

Update: It was the USB stick that was damaged, I tried with another Kingston brand USB, I already have Linux Mint installed on my PC along with Windows 10

in case need to ever emergency boot or resize partitions.

vocal mesa
amber meadow
#

did u use ventoy for the usb?

#

cuz if you did, you can just drag-n-drop other iso's or regular files too on it
