yeah same screen
Do you think it would be possible to change the password of the user back to the original one? or does it not matter anymore because it got encrypted?
oh wait i do get there
yes so boot normally or else use the options there for safe graphics mode shrugs
weird it booted when i didnt use the 3060 🤔
well of course
lemme get zulumount
idk what 3060 is, but sounds like nvidia. and you know nvidia is a dog on linux, without special baby support
lmaooo
yes its the 3060 mobile which is kind of poo
i used the onboard amd graphics
AMD my beloved
oh. u disabled the 3060 in the BIOS for this boot?
no i selected amd instead of nvdia in the MX boot screen thing
oh. neat that it has that specific option
I moved to MX Fluxbox almost a month ago
for apps, MX Package installer, and Synaptic Package Manager for a crap ton of other intricate things
might be the move after this conundrum
will zulumount be in mx package installer
in the debian repos tab it should. give it time to refresh the package list
just be careful to not accidentally RIGHT CLICK on open apps in the fluxbox panel, cuz that's a quick shortcut to close them
hmmm i cant quite find it
use synaptic
k
make sure u hit the reload button in it first
k hit "all" and then i relaoded it
@kindred sandal mount both?
@arctic gust are you able to help currently
whats happening as far as recovery?
so far it refused to open or decrypt in mint
so we switched to mx linux
got zulumount
and then im trying to decrypt as we speak
so zulumount-gui DOES support that tech weird that it wouldn't work in the other environment
When it asks for the key can I use the wrapped-paraphrase file?
nvm it didnt work
every time i get close NOTHING HAPPENS
I don't think you are getting close
I suspect if you can't simply follow https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=315207
then something is wrong with either following directions or the filesystem
i have been documenting everything that i am doing
@arctic gust what exactly went wrong here then
people said in other forums these instructions dont work
and ive said that before
@arctic gust
@arctic gust @kindred sandal this is exactly what i did before i got locked out
i changed my password using the terminal
@arctic gust this time i mounted it to desktop where i could clearly see it and ITS STILL encrypted
then you didn't actually mount it per directions
the directions didn't say to click on the icon on the desktop
what do you mean
i followed the directions to the tee
it worked
i got the passphrase, no other password worked
the video shows you clicking on an icon vs mounting it with the terminal
IT SAID it mounted successfully
you mounted the encypted item which isn't useful
im gonna try it on 20.3
BRUUUUUUUHHHHHHH @kindred sandal @arctic gust
SOLUTION:
IF YOU ARE IN A MINT VERSION LATER THAN 20.3 YOU NEED TO DOWNLOAD 20.3 FROM THIS FORUM POST AND LIVE BOOT (like from a USB stick):
https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?p=2650379#p2650379
also dont use balena etcher, use venoty as its easier, as mentioned far up in this post:
@here
I don't see why an old version of mint can help
well i just recovered and mounted it with one command so
is it the same command listed in that forum post?
was the original OS 20.3?
sorry it was I"m sure in the prior info but I've forgotten
no worries, it was 22, its the very first linux i installed about 2 months ago
you should after safely copying any and all info you may need to recover attempt to duplicate on 22, if the procedure does not in fact work on 22 with the exact same commands that may suggest a bug
also the whole thing kinda suggests it would be nice to offer a better process for similar recoveries
Ive been saying this for a while, axrusar on the forums has already mentioned that this is a bug
https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?p=2416492#p2416492
quite an OS breaking bug too
I'm not a fan of ecryptfs
tbf i should have never encrypted but i really didnt know any better
also GUI tools like file managers know how to unlock luks
so recovery is less bothersome
i think im just going to pay more attention next time to what im clicking on
🤣 @kindred sandal you can remove clock emoji now lol
did u finally unlock it?
yeah brother
oh finally.
turns out it really was this version of mint all along
the crucial thing was i couldnt find anywhere to download it so i gave up
so u did it thru what?
i mean what method or distro or tool did u use?
mint 20.3
well good that u got it.
i'd have sent u 20.3 but it would take 3 weeks to upload
glad u found a copy
If anyone has this problem again you need to send them my forum post, theres a link there to download it
from the tk42 guy
