New build new nvme out of the box. Linux doesn't want to make it bootable and I don't know what to do. I've casually used Linux for a decade. I've played with a bunch of distros but I'm at a loss. Any help would be appreciated.
I'm about to try. Clonezilla and see if I can just make it work.
It's not set up as a boot but it will load and keep persistence. Is there any harm in just leaving it?

open disks app and show a screenshot
Give me a second. I'm rebooting
if it doesnt show, then it's either a pci mismatch, or RST
Just with the nvme she won't boot. But I throw in an old laptop hard drive that I have mint installed on for testing and I get this stuff free space on one an allocated on another.
do you want to install an OS on that 970 samsung?
I'm doing my best to
so change the partition table to GPT not msdos
as far as I understand, FYI, you install the OS using a flash drive. not by flashing the installer on the nvme (?)
I've done it to GPT before. I will try it again
afterwards boot a good-working usb prepared with a reputable good flasher tool having the Mint ISO
n tell it erase disk and install... (and tell it the proper disk ofc)
For an old broad with old parts, she's not necessarily an ugly girl.
if ur trying to clone, then dont do it that way
use the SAME partitioning scheme as the OG drive
and a clone app like clonezilla
show the pic of the other drive pleas
I seriously can't tell what's happening. what is the output of findmnt /
She'll take up to 700 gigs of memory as long as I use the proper Xeon CPU and I have that coming in. And the best one I can get that's overclockable is an 18 core 32 thread processor
I've got her installed and the install Linux mint disc is showing
Here's where everything goes to trash
No root file system is defined. Please correct this from the partitioning menu
She booted up on the m.2 as the iso....
I've been playing with distros for 10 years. I wouldn't call myself proficient with Linux. It's mostly been Ubuntu, mint, manjaro and the easy stuff. I use home assistant but but I don't do anything extensive.
I have no idea what the hell to do
I just had her loaded strictly from the m.2. I turn her off and reload straight into bio setup. She doesn't exist
But if you look at that under boot priority, she's the first one on the list. My assumption is there's an issue with her. Missing the u. So she's not set up as UEFI
Now I head over to boot options and she shows as UEFI what in the hell??
OK let's start over. do you have a 2nd device you can use to flash a usb stick?
Sure I can go down that route again. I've already got 22 on a thumb drive somewhere
great. unplug the HDD, only keep in the NVME and USB stick.
I run two desktops at once. One is a workstation. One is a daily driver. The daily driver is the one I'm trying to get running right now. That is currently loaded up in grub with Linux mint 22.1 cinnamon 64-bit ready to go. Or on my workstation? I have a fresh download of the same thing and I can try another USB stick
Normal installation or compatibility mode?
normal
This will make you want to bash your head against the wall. Watch what happens
She's loaded. Install Linux mint continue and no root file system defined. Please correct this from the partitioning menu
So now let's go to the partitioning menu
That's what happens when I use departed to partition it to gpt
The absolutely craziness about it is she's already got Lennox mint on her
pray tell, why are u doing the complicated manual install?
Okay then what's next?
reboot the computer, when you get in the live session, report back.
especially if u removed the hdd as lot said
I'm in
show a clear pictur of the FULL disks window of the drive u intend to install Linux on
when you get in the session, open the terminal, run efibootmgr and share a screenshot
excellent. now run the installer. when you get the options "erase and install" and "something else", press the erase and install button, then continue as usual
I'm not proficient with the terminal. When you say run the installer, you mean the install Linux mint icon right
I know I'm one of the lazy Linux users. I haven't learned terminal
Yes. exactly.
I'm here. Install now isn't available
what do you mean? can you go back once and show a screenshot?
A side note, I figured out what was wrong with the camera on my phone. The protective glass for the camera had shifted and there was muck underneath it
It's just not selectable as device for bootloader installation
Install now. The button itself is what I'm talking about
press the "Back" button.
To the left of Install now, to the right of Quit. Do not press the Quit button. Press the Back button.
Just to see what it said. I tried selecting install now and it gave me the option to install it on the nvme
This is the furthest I've got and then I don't want to lose everything. Should I continue or go back
Now with this option selected, press Next.
u only got one drive to install on so naturally, 'erase and install'
idk why in the BLUE HELL u keep clicking on 'something else' for
It didn't work before. This never popped up for some reason
The hell kind of magic is this. I've literally done this at least 10 times over the last 2 days. The exact same thing after resetting different parts of the BIOS. That's wild
hdd threw a wrench in the works. now that it is disconnected, it's smooth sailing
I've tried everything. Hard drives, thumb drives all of it. This is walking step by step through exactly what I did the very first install. On everything except for the terminal.
I was going for a complete install from the start!
I am an idiot. I'm just not a complete idiot. I actually want to know what EFI boot manager did unless it was just making the system recognize it through some kind of magic
I've spent over three hundred dollars building this thing. But the stats are going to be great for a bunch of 10-year-old hardware so I can't complain. It's been super fun and ridiculous for a daily driver replacement.
But like I said I run two computers at once a workstation and this so it's fun
it just proved to Lot, you, and myself that you loaded the session in UEFI mode
And what does that mean?. Like I'm genuinely curious where my mistake was
idk mistake. maybe the hdd had way too many partitions n confuses the installer.
opposite of uefi mode is legacy BIOS mode
I repartitioned the hard drive multiple times and multiple ways with disk and g parted
I flashed it. I cleared it out. I did everything I knew to do
well whatever, this here is nvme
from your initial message, I know you were doing something very wrong, after reading "No root partition found"
if it works then mark as solved
Honestly, I thought it was a common thing with these nvme drives. If you Google it, apparently there's an ongoing issue. My Hope was that somebody in the community had ran into it already. I didn't know that. I just more than likely made some stupid Noob mistake
that message is cuz they didnt spec a root mount point in the manual setup chart
Another stupid question. How do I market as solved
as long as the nvme is visible in Disks app, there's no issue
right clik title on left side. edit tags, n add the solved one
I've got multiple pictures that it was showing up and not usable.
which is why they were doing something very wrong, why are they even in the manual partitioner
cuz u were doing manual setup n probably didnt spec a mount point for the root of the filesystem
I've got to say thank you. I've been working on this stupid thing for a month since I found this motherboard and power supply at a resale.
It may be a 10-year-old motherboard and a 10-year-old power supply, but it still be a decent computer when I get her finished
They made a xenon CPU for her that has 18 cores and 32 threads. And is overclockable.
4 channel ddr4 with 8 slots
1200 watt power supply. I got the motherboard and the power supply for 125 bucks combined.
I giggled and I knew what I had to do. That was about 5 weeks ago.
I can't say it enough. Thanks guys
And now it's time to turn the computer she's replacing into a home theater home assistant Nas combo. It's time for Frankenstein
can share in general if want people to see
I'm going to paint it. Redo the inside. Probably a do like a 1650 super in it I have one lying around. And then I need to figure out how I'm going to get all three of those programs running on one machine properly. There's always issues you know. I might even make it water cooled for fun. I've got an old crack in 120 sitting around
