you can split the existing nvme (resize)
in the rare occasion that a Windows update wrecks the bootloader, you keep safe and use the live bootable USB stick to do boot repair with its included repair app
I don't recommend Etcher since it locks the whole usb stick as a read-only drive. See #1295728709306683482 here for article on on how to make usb installer stick
- if you DO choose to go separate drives, then you need to buy either an nvme that matches your motherboards PCIe generation
or, simply a SATA device; SSD preferred.
if you opt for a dual-drive setup, you must remove temporarily the original nvme while installing linux.
this will guarantee the bootloader goes exclusively on the linux drive.
also turn Fast Startup off in Windows Control panel: power options
boot usb must be minimum 4 GB
