#OpenShot Won’t Launch After Accidental Interference – Seeking Lightweight Video Editor Alternatives

Hi everyone, hope you're all doing well. I'm having a small issue with OpenShot Video Editor (version 3.3.0), which I installed via Flathub on my Linux Mint 21.3 XFCE (64-bit) system. It was working fine initially, but it's always been a bit problematic—it sometimes crashes, freezes, or hangs while I'm editing. I understand this might be due to my low-spec system: an Intel NUC mini desktop with only 4GB of RAM and integrated graphics. Despite that, OpenShot has been good enough for basic video editing tasks like cutting, trimming, muting audio, and exporting videos in formats like 1080p60 or 720p30.

Recently, I was working on a simple project—just some vacation footage—when some guests and their kids were over. I stepped away to use the bathroom and forgot to lock my PC. When I came back, I found the kids clicking randomly around in OpenShot. Although nothing else on my system was damaged, OpenShot stopped working entirely—it won’t even start anymore.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling it from Flathub, but the issue persists. Could anyone recommend a good alternative video editor that would work on a low-resource system like mine? Here are my system specs as image.

P.S. Oh, one more thing — after reinstalling the OpenShot Video Editor from Flathub, I tried to open it using Warehouse. When I clicked 'Open,' a message popped up on my screen. I clicked the 'Details' button, and this text appeared --->

keep an eye on Swap memory usage/presence using htop terminal app

#

or the watch -n 1 free -h command

#

if it's not overflowing swap or memory, then try the native deb version of openshot

#

you can also type flatpak-run openshot from terminal (or whatever the exact command is) to launch from there and monitor any fail errors.

#

it's possible that sentry sdk package got corrupted or removed. try reinstalling it by searching software manager

no? if it runs, it runs

#

simple store the appimage in a safe folder, and make a custom launcher on desktop to it

#

some people recommend making an appimage or app folder in userhome

Why is it still looking like this after I run the Openshot video editor appimage that I downloaded from the official Openshot website?

Looks like the OpenShot devs got a bit too creative and changed things under the hood. Yes, I did click “Add” and loaded my video project — that’s how I usually check my edits. But now? I have to double-click just to preview the video? Seriously? The old setup was miles better than this shiny new disaster. Classic case of “if it ain’t broke, break it anyway!

seems the project pane is spanning full width of window here. Check the View menu, you probably need to turn on the preview pane.

the source material (or what I just called the project pane) used to nestle in the upper left area
