#help with linux
1 messages ¡ Page 1 of 1 (latest)
Probably you can switch to linux this can even enhance your basic understanding of of what a operating system is and how does it actually works but it totally dependens upon you Linux is a great operating system from my side since it gives us more access to our hardware
.
i know what an OS is
maybe i worded the question wrong đ

Motivation for Switching: I recently transitioned to Fedora Linux, driven by curiosity and a desire for a fresh computing experience. Having grown complacent and prone to procrastination on Windows 11, I wanted to explore something new for fun.
⢠Background Interest: My fascination with operating systems sparked during a computer science course last semester, where I studied OS concepts. This inspired me to experiment with Linux.
⢠Virtual Machine Experience: I initially tried Linux via a virtual machine, but found its performance and usability lacking compared to a native installation.
⢠Decision to Go Native: Despite Windows 11 running smoothly on my laptop with no performance or usability issues, my curiosity about Linux led me to install Fedora natively.
⢠Positive Experience: Three weeks into using Fedora, Iâve encountered only one minor issue. The journey has been seamless, enjoyable, and refreshing.
⢠Performance and Features: The OS is clean, fast, and efficient. I can effortlessly run browsers, Visual Studio Code, and even games using Lutris and Wine.
⢠Minimal Adjustments: The only thing I miss is a native WhatsApp client, though WhatsApp Web works perfectly as a substitute.
⢠Enjoyable Troubleshooting: Configuring and troubleshooting Linux has been engaging. I find both the command-line interface (CLI) and the user-friendly graphical user interface (GUI) intuitive and fun to use.
lemme read that rq
i use it in vms sometimes and it is slow on my pc too
i meant the vm))

Dont worry just boot up a fedora Linux system
I'm biased towards Linux btw
Even if you dont like it you can switch back to windows thats what i thought i saved my windows11 key and was gonna switch back if i faced any major issue
I would prefer ubuntu but they all have live test environment thingy
i dont have a key i accidentally installed pro not home đ
But thankfully i loved my experience and except my fingerprint sensor not having a driver there was no issue at all
I dont like the interface of ubuntu and fedora is the perfect mix of latest releases and features while being stable and reliable
get out
I like the GUI of ubuntu in my opinion, but whatever one you prefer. They all have similar guis
Thatâs depends on you but fedora is better in features and usability and stability and if you like ubuntu you should get mint
Im just used to ubuntu, do you think drivers will be on ubuntu for my crappy laptop?
or any distro
Mainly internet drivers, i can tether from my tablet if not
Okayyy
That i dont know mych about tho distro shouldnt matter if its available on linux it should be available
Do you think i should switch? im sick of windows and not being able to do what i want to my computer and automatic bios updates (literally every week)
Yeah i was thinking about this alot but its better to just say fuck it and boot directly i was fed up by worrying
The more you think the more delay and doubts you get just remember its not that important its just a os and computer just have fun
read that thread i sent you bro
Depends
i did
copy pasted from that reddit thread:
the cons:
Technicality. Linux has come a long way in this 30+ years, but some aspects of the system are technical, so you may need to get your hands dirty in some situations and open up a terminal and run some commands to get some things working.
Compatibility with programs. Linux is not macOS or Windows, nor it is a "free" version of those. It is it's own OS, separate from those. This also means you cannot run windows' .exe programs or macOS apps on it. Despite Linux having a sizeable pool of programs to install, some developers have refused to make Linux versions of their programs, and the free open source alternatives may not work for you. The most common offenders in this case are almost everything Adobe and multiplayer games with anti-cheat systems.
Learning curve. Yes, you will need to learn a bit about computers and how Linux works, as unlike Windows or macOS it won't hide it's complexity for you. You will also will need to re-learn some stuff and leave old habits behind.
Fragmentation. As I said, there is not a single Linux OS out there, but many 'distros'. This has the downside that each one of those distros is a small world into itself, meaning not everything is standard in Linux. For example, you have like 5 different commands to install programs, depending on what distro you use, and also the availability of those programs could vary.
If you are alright with these then please go ahead
ive delayed it for a few weeks bc ive been worrying and a bit busy
i dont need grandma mode enabled now
Also, compatibility is fine with programs however with niche programs you sometimes have to deal with difficulties yourself
Plus help is usually given but its not a guaruntee
Then Mint/Ubuntu is fine. I recommend Mint personally
Canonical is slowly driving ubuntu to shit. The only ubuntu flavor i recommend is lubuntu or kubuntu
every program i need is available or has alternatives and workarounds
its fine for what i need
Then get it
If programs and learning curve isnt a problem then linux is better by a LONG shot
better performance too
i have a crappy HP laptop
Nowadays you can use chatgpt and get guides and make solutions to your problems and ask for easy step by step and why we are doing these
ill install it tmr, i need windows for stuff currently
Dont waste time thinking about it make a bootable mint and run it right now
Or wtv distro i choose
bootable usb flashers worthy of using:
UUI (pendrivelinux.com)
ventoy (ventoy.net)
Rufus (rufus.ie)
worthy distros to try out : ubuntu, ubuntu MATE, ubuntu Budgie , Debian xfce, Mint xfce
u can literally slap ALL those iso's on one big usb if it's prepped with UUI or ventoy, and try 'em all one by one in live environment
and yes, Debian has live ISOs now
I have tried ubuntu and arch on vm but just like casual try of using it never tried anything properly but now i have fedora 42 on my main and only laptop and clean fast great
You can try distrosea its a website you can try any distro on
i use that lots
Endaevour and fedora were my top 2 options and i choose fedora
My friend has issues with fedora
Like what?
if you're thinking about it then do it, make backups obviously from windows and install any distro u want, if u don't like it u can install something else
I doubt you'll learn very much using Ubuntu tho
oh i dont care about my data
i wasted too much time now its the next day đ
There is a saying in my natuve language i will translate for you it goes like you do things tomorrow or today its better to do things now instead because what else matter and dont procrastinate (i butchered the translation although you can vaguely understand what i mean)
basically do it now?
Yeah
what do you use to put the iso on the usb? i use rufus but it just crashes my pc
I would suggest use belena etcher is just clicking boot and it does everything for you no settings to tweak or anything
thats known to ruin some usbs
Well i didnât know about that lol đ
and i need the usb after

Well i think you can use your usb after that its just the data will be deleted to make a bootable
i only have 2 folders on it, its fine
nothing in them
But i am not knowledgeable about this but i heard its a simple un burning of usb i heard about it vaguely
thanks for trying to help
i have alternative ways
like a glitch with the windows installer to put a custom iso on the usb
@vale crystal ⢠Balena Etcher doesnât ruin USB drives: It overwrites data to create bootable drives, but doesnât cause physical damage.
⢠Common issues:
⢠Drive shows reduced capacity or becomes unreadable due to new filesystem (e.g., ISO9660).
⢠Logical issue, not hardware damage; usually fixable by reformatting.
⢠Wear risk: Repeated flashing can wear out flash memory over time, but normal use is safe.
⢠Failed flashes: May occur with low-quality drives, interruptions, or incompatible images (e.g., Windows ISOs).
⢠Fixing âruinedâ drives:
⢠Reformat using GParted, Diskpart, or Disk Utility.
⢠Use low-level tools for write-protected drives.
⢠Prevention:
⢠Use high-quality USB drives.
⢠Back up data before flashing.
⢠Avoid interrupting the process.
⢠Alternatives: Rufus, Ventoy, USBImager, or Raspberry Pi Imager if issues persist.
I used it before and my usb would not even connect after i took it out and put it back in any computer
Idk about that you can see alternative if you want
well you did try to help, thanks
#1295728709306683482 has a guide on making bootable isos if you want to refer to one
i know how, but thanks
its now or never (i cant this weekend i only have today), should i say fuck it and risk installing it?
Yeah
Its not gonna ruin your pc or pendrive anyways
Just full send
i dont care about my usb rn
the pc is more important
if i dont like it i can get windows back on the usb
-# i totally installed windows 11 from the official installer not changing registry bc i dont meet requirements
I used my usb too make 2 bootable and it still works
Just copy the windows key
There is a command to see that use chatgpt
once i knocked the usb out an old pc installing windows and have been scared ever since đ
idk why
i dont have it activated
yes im asking again đ should i do ubuntu or mint
just cant decide
Mint as i hate ubuntu
mint is based off ubuntu but gnome isnt great
mint has so many editions though and idk what's what
Mint cinnamon is perfect balance for usability and features and i think its just pre installed packages rest you can manually download whatever you want like wine proton and lutris for gaming (even ourated games)
Mint cinnamon is best
Its made hy ubuntu but uts diffrent
I just hate the old weird look of ubuntu
I like modern clean interface
ubuntu is modern but its not easy to use
Linux Mint is an elegant, easy to use, up to date and comfortable desktop operating system.
ill have to go with ubuntu, ive used it before and i dont like the look of mint gui (taskbar etc)
Bro ubuntu literally have the worst taskbar
Vertical left side task bar is ass
It takes space on the screen i prefer no taskbar at all
i can move it to bottom
and ive found some flatpaks/flathubs to change it to the bottom properly
I use no taskbar even on win11 as i want full display for usage
You do you
I would suggest mint
But if you like some bad distro you can try ubuntu
still better than windows
its whatever you prefer
I would rather use win11 than ubuntu
I hate ubuntu especially the wallpaper and taskbar and icons its looks old and weird
i could just stick with windows
remember its linux - you can change pretty much anything
How was your experience and what distro did you boot?
i tried to boot mint but no matter what i do it wont boot
I donât even know what to say to you anymore at this point leave this discord and chill with windows youârent built for linux
đ
its my crappy laptop
im planning on using fedora instead, you are right. im not build for linux but mint just wont work on my laptop no matter what i do
What issues are you facing tho?
Yeah my friends also is facing issues in mint and he will shift back to win11
just a black screen after install ive tried like a million times (not literally), and failure to boot from usb sometimes with secure boot disabled and the installer setup properly
Try fedora its great for me not a single problem except the drivers issues as my fingerprint doesnât have a driver officially rest everything is fine
drivers should work fine for me, its all intel ones
performance is what im worried about, my friend has a gtx 1050 (nvidia drivers arent the best on linux) and an i5 7000 or 8000 series, he says its very laggy and slow. im not sure if itll be better or worse on my laptop thats worse than his
he had all drivers installed too
I have ryzen 5 5600h and integrated amd radeon graphics card and 16 gigs ram and 500gb ssd nveme and its runs smoothly on mine and my fried has a worse laptop and i feel like its running even more smoothly on his laptop
which version of fedora should i get?
42 workstation
workstation has bad performance on bad pcs from what ik
nvm im thinking of ubuntu pro
how do i change the taskbar location in fedora? if its a taskbar
It doesnât have a proper taskbar maybe you can use kde plasma it might give you windows like taskbar or you can use extention
I like this style as i kept the task bar on my win11 to hide always
I want a full display either what content i want
well the dock thingy then
if yk how
You can ask in fedora discord they will help you but be readythey are really g*y
code to it?
you are right đ
dash to panel . it's an extension for GNOME. research the terms
also dash to dock if u want a Mac-style doc on either the bottom or side
already found that but thanks
I get a 404 error when i try to get the fedora media writer or go to their website, i think their site is down
Yeah i am getting it too maybe the site is down but i have the iso file if you want i can send it to you but how will you like to get ut as its in 2.4 gb
@vale crystal
I downloaded it some days ago when the site worked lol
i can get onto the site on another device its just windows that doesnt load it
i need to use the fedora media writer because secure boot hates me
fedora hates me more than secure boot
shame that it failed to run
i didnt have c++ but i installed it and it worked
now my usb cant boot
it doesnt format it and adds write protection so i cannot format it
what was the exact issue of 'can't boot'?
idk
just got the message i get with every single installer except windows
done that
doesn't work
did u get a blue mok screen?
idk
pure blue
only had an ok button and a blue box
yes
oh
it just boots back to windows or whatever os i have

i get a different popup to that
ive sent an image earlier in this post
did u ensure secure boot support was on in ventoy?
prob secure boot
he mentions lock icon
when i was using ventoy, yes
now i just use fedora media writer which has the same error regardless even though fedora is signed
i didn't see any pic above
do u have another linux pc?
gparted would be a good tool to see how that usb stick is set up currently
another windows pc?
no
no other pc?
and this pc ur dealing with has no OS?
A laptop is a personal computer
it has windows..
yes.
perhaps install aomei partition tool on it
it may give the info u need re: the "bootable" usb
ok. is the pc with no OS on it fairly new? (last 6-7 years)
help with linux
i said it has an OS.
sorry, i meant the pc that you're TRYING to live boot Fedora on
yes it has an os that one
how old is it roughly?
i got it late or early 2022 its a 2021 laptop
koo
yeah sometimes the USB has to be made in UEFI mode. that is, the flasher tool must use a GPT partitioning scheme on it. That said, you must use the BIOS option "UEFI USB storage device" when attempting to boot it, and not legacy , which will just say "USB storage device"
i did that
step 4b in the ventoy guide I linked a few minutes ago highlights that critical step
already done that
your computer's boot menu (pressing boot menu key, not bios key) should look similar to this:
not exact, but similar
failing all that, perhaps try a different flash stick altogether, or a black usb 2.0 port if available.
good luck on it!
i do have a boot menu but its not exactly like that, idk how thatll help
because ive just been booting from the windows start from a device
well it's best to know how to do so from the real boot menu key
i was clicking "uefi usb device" in boot from a device in windows recovery options (i can do it from boot menu now), is that correct?
i mean either way
but if ur windows is borked ever, it's good to know the ideal way
should disabling secure boot let me boot into fedora?
also when i use the fedora media writer, it doesnt auto format. it just makes the usb have no format and until i restore it i cant format it
it wouldnt hurt anything to try
i suppose it's not equipped. idk. can use diskpart clean or aomei partition tool if needed
or ventoy, (then clear ventoy)
it will also unlock the drive
I meant it's an easy way to unlock read-only usb drives
you may also try www.q4os.org
it can install from within Windows , has a special instruction there for that
i fixed the usb by restoring it in media writer
koo
Damn you are facing alot of issues lol đ . I simply used rufus and i booted first try i didnt even had to change any settings like secure boot or even touch my bios even once and it ran flawlessly
Even more easy is belena etcher
One click boom it make the bootable
đ
banana* (joking)
ive either set it up wrong or have secure boot on
I would suggest you to use chatgpt and paste all your errors and problems and ask him to troubleshoot and solve those issues
already done that all it says is to double check and do what i've already done
I used chatgpt and it was really simple
ive done everything at this point other than turn off secure boot
Ask him that after doing all that its still not working
Secure boot is the key then
when im free at 1:45pm ill get this laptop sorted
fedora community just said my usb is too old when its a gen 3.2 128gb sandisk that i got like 2 years ago
I have hp 16 gigs pendrive its really slow it took 30+ min per iso copy
everything hp is slow
my laptop is hp thats prob why
I would suggest 3 things you need to do use this prompt âIâm trying to install Fedora Linux on my computer but facing issues creating a bootable USB and booting into it. Iâm using [mention the tool, e.g., Fedora Media Writer, Rufus, or another] to create the bootable USB with the Fedora ISO [specify version, e.g., Fedora Workstation 41]. However, when I try to boot from the USB, I get an error [describe the error, e.g., âFailed to boot,â âSecure Boot violation,â or any specific error message displayed].
I suspect the issue might be related to Secure Boot, but Iâm not sure how to confirm or resolve it. My system is [briefly describe the system, e.g., âa Dell laptop with Windows 11, UEFI firmwareâ or âan older PC with BIOSâ]. Could you provide a step-by-step guide to:
- Verify if Secure Boot is enabled and how to disable it if needed.
- Create a properly bootable Fedora USB, including any specific settings (e.g., partition scheme, file system, or UEFI compatibility).
- Troubleshoot the boot error Iâm encountering, including potential causes like Secure Boot, incorrect BIOS/UEFI settings, or USB preparation issues.
- Any additional Fedora-specific considerations for a successful installation.
Please explain in simple terms, as Iâm not very experienced with Linux or BIOS/UEFI settings. If there are alternative tools or methods to create the bootable USB, please suggest them. Thank you!â
Fill in the [] bracket by your info
ill ask chatyap (bad joke) rn
Yeah ask yap pt (great joke
So basically I was using the wrong usb format and had secure boot enabled..
I got a cheap flash drive with many ISOs on it. just put debian live on it earlier, and took over 15 mintues to copy , but it worked np
How long it takes to copy doesnt really matter, go to the toilet while it does it, get a drink or snack and watch smth then itll be done
-# :)
mine has a light too, so when it stops flashing for good, i know damn sure the write is done
you can also see pendrivelinux.com website, there's a handy tool there been around a decade called universal usb installer
and if your usb drive doesnt have a light, wait extra minute once Windows or UUI says it's done writing files
I would suggest use belena etcher it just simple you dont have to do anything and it does the stuff and setting for you
okay
oops mb to delete
Hey i can help you
meant to delete smth i said in fedora community
But its really simple
can you help in screen share?
I used a video tutorial
ive tried them, doesnt work
same error anything i do
Ok right now i am a little busy
But you can make video of the problem and errors and send them here i will see them and give solutions
This error.
Troubleshooting Steps
- Verify Fedora ISO
⢠Issue: Corrupted ISO causes boot failure.
⢠Fix:
1. Download Fedora ISO from getfedora.org.
2. In PowerShell (Win + S, type PowerShell), run: Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 C:\Path\To\Fedora.iso
3. Compare with checksum on Fedora site.
4. If mismatched, re-download. - Check USB Drive
⢠Issue: Faulty USB prevents booting.
⢠Fix:
1. Plug USB into PC, check in File Explorer (Win + E).
2. Format to FAT32 (right-click USB, âFormat,â select FAT32, âStartâ).
3. If not detected, try another port or replace USB (8GB+). - Create Bootable USB
⢠Issue: Improper USB creation fails boot.
⢠Fix:
1. Use Rufus (rufus.ie):
⢠Select USB, Fedora ISO, GPT (UEFI) or MBR (Legacy), FAT32.
⢠Click âStart.â
2. Or use Fedora Media Writer (getfedora.org).
3. If it fails, try another USB or tool. - Fix BIOS/UEFI
⢠Issue: Wrong settings block USB boot.
⢠Fix:
1. Restart, press BIOS key (F2, F12, Del, or Esc).
2. In âBootâ menu, set USB as first.
3. Set UEFI (modern PCs) or Legacy mode to match USB.
4. Disable âSecure Bootâ if needed.
5. Save (F10), restart. - Test on Another PC
⢠Issue: PC-specific issue.
⢠Fix: Boot USB on another PC. If it works, recheck BIOS or ports on original PC. - Check Hardware
⢠Issue: Incompatible hardware.
⢠Fix: Use USB 3.0 port, verify PC has 64-bit CPU, 2GB+ RAM (msinfo32).
i was using the usb 2.0 one...
Do i need to set it to boot from usb first if i have a boot menu?
like select boot device
I am a little confused can you show a video of you doing this
cant
cant record bios
fedora community is trying to help anyway
ill let you know if it works then step 1 is done
Yeah get their help
All the best
even their mods are useless đ
chatgpt that you recommended is better, i left the fedora server bc no matter what i ask, they wont help and say my internet is bad..
no way, i got into grub
and got into fedora
now just waiting for the millions of ok messages
failed
i got in
@vale crystal Great the people on there care more about lgtb than helping normal people and listening to their problems
How is it running
Good, cursor lags sometimes for a second but only when opening an app or installing drivers
sober which lets me run roblox lets me run heavy games at stable fps
i usually get 6fps, now i get 30 - 70
fr
battery life is also really good even with performance mode
usually i get a hour or so on windows, now a few more hours on fedora
gnome tweaks adds the minimise and maximise button and now im all set
just gotta get my apps
only issue is a long time to login and boot but i just go get smth to drink or eat while i wait
@unkempt wren @vale crystal Thank you both for all of your help on this.
(if i pinged the right people)
Why tho? My boot time is instant tbh
potato pc what do you expect
when its hot it also starts to lag but thats bc it has no cooling
Still better than windows tho

Try to keep the laptop in a slant like i use a pen in the front part and it keep the ventilation better
ill probably just get a cooling pad or smth
Like this image
Windows also has a terrible gui imo
?
Tbh i liked windows 11 i didnât have any problems with it just wanted to try linux
compared to linux it looks bad
I meant put the pen here like this for better ventilation
I dont mind it but its the performance mostly
uh ok
wont help it still gets to 90'C sometimes
The best part about linux is you can customise it even tho i havenât i like the default version
I only added a maximise and minimise button thats all
my cursor also lags the odd times when loading stuff but after its fine
pen trick worked đ
Yeah i have been using for years
random change of subject but tbh its annoying that fedora cant use .deb (probably can other ways)
it stops me getting apps like discord and steam and minecraft
What do you mean? I have discord in my fedora already
Here
I think I installed it thorough flathub in software store
flathub version doesnt have audio for me
how do you get that transparent theme? or is it just your camera giving the effect
I am using these extentions and the one you are looking for are blur my shell and you can get it from https://extensions.gnome.org/
But be careful there is a way to install extensions and you have to enable it thorough terminal and
Firstly when you open the website you have to select the latest version as your fedora is latest right then it automatically downloads and you have to manually unzip it and then move the downloaded file to the /home/<your-system-name>/.local/share/gnome-shell/extentions folder and open the metedata.json and copy the uuid and then rename the folder pf the extention to exactly that and then log out of pc then log back in and use the enable command -
gnome-extensions enable <extention-uuid-name>
chatgpt will probably help
@vale crystal how is you experience?
im not home but do you mean my experience with fedora so far?
Yeah i did a typo
its good, sort of annoying not having a desktop but im sure theres a gnome extension to add it and ill get used to no desktop
What do you mean? It has a desktop by default
no i mean the desktop where you put icons
or am i not using it right
Ohh so you canât put icons on the desktop? Idk since i never tried it as i liked the clean interface i use the taskbar for apps
yeah
blur my shell looks so much nicer
combined with dash to dock
do you know any other good extensions?
post closed but open for more questions
These are the ones i use
@vale crystal
im using linux mint now because fedora decided to stop working
What? Why and what type of mint? Cinnamon or xfce?
Cinnamon.
i prefer cinnamon taskbar/dock and start menu, runs better and fedora straight up stopped working after i considered going to mint
I'm going back to fedora now but KDE.
Bro youâre a bop at this point youâre for the distros đ @vale crystal
I'm distro hopping
You should try zorin os then
Is the most similar to windows and beutiful too
I've tried zorin os core and lite, ubuntu, fedora kde and workstation (using kde rn), linux mint cinnamon, lubuntu, kubuntu
I cant find the perfect one
Setting up kde right now but it eats ram.
Thats why i use fedora default and will never switch to anything
Because if i allow myself to change now i wonât stop
I had problems with fedora otherwise i would have stayed with it
wait im on fedora rn đ (kde not workstation rn)
Do you think i should go back to fedora workstation where i know it works?
Youâre confusing me and yourself alot
Youâre overthinking and overdoing
Just do whatever you think is right its just a os nothing more or less
ive reinstalled fedora workstation and fixed the issues, never changing distro again (unless stuff like it loses support)
What problem happened in the first place?
Kept booting into bios, had the computer with a đľ face screen lots, kept freezing and stuff
