i am trying to get bottles running and it says it doesn't have enough permissions

low orchid
#

is the drive which the application you're trying to run with Bottles an ext4 formatted (ie - linux native) filesystem?

#

or Bottles itself, should be on the linux drive. either ext4 or btrfs

oak lake
#

the text didn't get screenshot but hovering over steam proton prefixes it says "Steam was not found or bottles does not have enough permissions"

low orchid
#

ok but a) where's the windows app

oak lake
#

steam and bottles are alll on the drive mint is on

low orchid
#

ok

#

hm.

#

go to the folder that the windows app lives in

#

using file manager

#

right click on any empty space between the files, then do "properties" and check the permissions tab

oak lake
#

sorry, im new to this, i just installed steam from the software manager, do you know where it's installed?

low orchid
#

no not steam

#

I am presuming you want to run some kind of Windows program using bottles, yes?

oak lake
#

yeah, vortex mod manager

low orchid
#

ok do u know where you put vortex mod manager?

oak lake
#

i do not have it

low orchid
#

oh

#

so Bottles just won't open at all is the issue?

oak lake
# oak lake

bottles is open, yes. the guide i was watching said to make sure bottles was set up properly first and foremost, and ticking the option pictured here was part of it

low orchid
#

ok open software manager

#

do you see a "Installed" tab near the top, or perhaps in a 3line menu?

oak lake
#

for bottles, i have an option to launch or remove

low orchid
#

ah u found it

#

ok look in the info below the sample picture.. the source

#

is it flathub or ubuntu repos?

oak lake
#

flatpak (flathub)

low orchid
#

ah ok

#

this leads to something

#

do you have Flatseal installed?

oak lake
#

no

low orchid
#

since flatpaks aren't native apps, they're kind of constrained, but flatseal allows one to adjust each flatpak's permissions

oak lake
#

looking at it now, this seems to be the permissions manager i was looking for though

low orchid
#

so install flatseal

oak lake
#

got it

low orchid
#

ok. run Flatseal, and look up the installed flatpaks it detects

#

and the Bottles one.

#

now dont just blindly give it every permission under the sun

#

that's quite unsafe.

oak lake
#

okay, understood

low orchid
#

my guess, since the settings pic of Bottles you showed me showed it wants to access the Steam folder to include steam games.

#

so my guess is you must give it permissions to read that steam folder.

#

so in case you don't know it, open Steam, look its preferences, and find what folder is the games library set to

#

then give Bottles that permission to read that folder via flatseal

#

or, isn't there a native Bottles app offered?

oak lake
#

bottles had a few entries already

low orchid
#

check the dropdown for Bottles sources in software manager

#

re: your steam Storage...

#

look where the path to games library is

#

i have no idea to set as an example

#

but probably it's ~/.steam

#

in otherwords, the hidden ".steam" subfolder inside of your userhome folder

oak lake
low orchid
#

that's my guess, so allow that path

oak lake
#

like that?

low orchid
#

yes

#

u mentioned you just got Steam app, so that .steam hidden folder in home is probably empty rn

oak lake
#

hey that worked

low orchid
#

FK yeah.

oak lake
#

nice

low orchid
#

alright solved. g'day
