Hey guys, i am having an issue where when my pc boots i can’t get in the bios at all, the boot screen shows up but then if i press the keys to go in boot menu or bios it just freezes on the boot screen forever, alternatively if i do nothing then it just boots into the operating system as usual, i tried removing the cmos and unplugged from the wall for like 30 minutes to try and force the bios open and it does not even go in the bios. I am not sure what to do.
#Boot issues / bios not opening at all

Here is what i tried so far:
-
unplugged and removed the small battery on the motherboard for 30 minutes
-
Tried a different keyboard and mouse plugged in
-
Tried to force bios using the windows boot helper thingy where you can select to boot in uefi settings (this also just ended up leaving me on the boot screen frozen)
-
I tried changing the ram on the pc and swapping which slot they are in.
Here is the computer parts
Motherboard: gigabyte b650 gaming x ax (rev 1.5)
Cpu: ryzen 9 7900x
Ram: 64(4x16gb) 6000mhz t-create (i tried with only 32gb)
Gpu: rtx 3080 evga xc3
It's a long shot. Try changing the connector on back of your GPU. Pick another display port, socket to connect into.
Ok i will try this now
Also, try a different boot button on your keyboard if the monitor thing doesn't work. Del, F12 are the most common. If you spam all the buttons it can lock the bios.
Ok i tried with only my 1080 on hdmi bow it still hangs but also wanted to note this issue i satrted noticing it only when i upgraded from 32gb to 64gb
Ideally you want to disable fast boot in your bios. If you can get into it.
Maybe it's the XMP profile. Do you have DDR5?
Yes ddr5
Ah.
But resetting bios never works even removing cmos
Well. Turn off your PC and remove all but one ram stick. Get into bios, disable fast boot and xmp profile for the RAM. Ideally see if the settings are on auto instead of preset numbers.
Last time i got into bios i selected the first xmp profile
I could be wrong. But that's probably the cause. Disable XMP entirely for DDR5.
Even with only one ram stick it freezes when trying to open bios
I will try removing cmos again now
Make sure the ram stick is in the primary slot. Swap out that stick for another if that's the case.
Is the primary slot the left one closest to the cpu or the one marked first
Sorry for the dirty radiator
I dont understand why removing cmos does not force the bios to reset 😅
It's probably not the cmos.
Move the ram to another slot.
All we're doing right now is swapping ram, moving around ram slots.
Alright i will move it
Also the second, second you turn on the PC. SPAM that del key or f12 key. Which ever key takes you into the BIOS.
So basically when i put the ram stick in any other slot than the 2nd one it does not even show anything its just black screen for ever
I tried different sticks in different slots but still the same issue
Yeah it feeezes let me send a quick video
Well now it just boots in the os so maybe my keyboard is not working
Also my power button is super weird
Switch your keyboard to another port. Turn off your PC, unplug all hard drives, ssds, m.2's. All of them. You just need BIOS access.
Ok i will unplug everything cus it just boot loops the os
Once again. If you can access the BIOS. Change the ram settings to auto, turn off XMP, disable fast boot.
Should i plug into igpu and remove the rtx
It's very unlikely it's the GPU. First we need to rule out the ram. Then the next most likely is your OS is in an error.
Omg 😱
So i removed all the m.2 and sata, unplugged all the usb except the keyboard, and now i am here on the bios it said it got reset
Good. Did you change the ram settings? After you make the changes. Plug the ram back in. Go back into the BIOS.
The ram right now is set to xmp disabled and ddr5 auto booster enabled thats how it was
Good. Turn off fast boot. Save and exit. Then turn off the PC after it auto boots back into the BIOS. Plug all your RAM back in. Reboot your PC.
Very essential. Save and exit can sometimes be masked in BIOS as exit. Make sure it saves.
Ok i saved and quit with fast boot off
Now we repeat the process with all your ram in. If you are in BIOS again. Don't change anything. We just need to make sure it works with all ram sticks.
I plugged all the ram in there is no error code on the motherboard but its just black screen for now (all drives are still unplugged) should i do anything or wait?
Now, turn off your PC. Plug in only your main drive. Reboot.
Good i got my main drive in and with 4 sticks in it loads bios now so it is working
So i am guessing the sticks are stuck at 4800mt/s and they should stay like that for it to not break every thing
So everything works?
Once again a reminder why I don't go near DDR5. Yeah you are stuck with what you have. Some people luck out and get the high speeds. At 4800 it's still really good!
Also, do not upgrade to 128gb to 256gb. It craps the bed hard in those ranges. In the future (5-10 years) upgrade to DDR6.
Understood also is there any other bios option i should change before i install linux mint
Fast boot off and secure boot off. EFI boot mode should be on. Linux also does legacy boot. So not an issue these days.
The only time you'll run into issues, is a MS dual boot partition. Do not remove it!
(:
@covert orbit just wanted to let you know that the issue came back but after some testing i found the exact problem, it is only when my 8tb hdd is plugged in that i can’t access the bios
glad u got it fixed along with redstar's great help. please edit tags to 'solved' in this thread.
also note drives bigger than 2 TB, should have a GPT partition table for proper operation.
i used gparted to format them so maybe it used gpt partition by default
default is mbr/ msdos unless it was smart enough to know otherwise
open gparted, select the drive. then go to View menu, and tick on 'device information'
Oh good its set to gpt
yeah also idk what the reserved partition is i should prob delete it
no that's for ur windows stuff
i dont have windows
at all?
itys?
so this 8tb was formated using windows, when i got on linux i made a 6.5 tb partition and moved files from the ntfs partition to the ext4 partition
yeah but i cleared it cus i dont plan on going back to windows now it hosts some games
mkay
i guess u can delete the msreserved one but . it wont add to any of the others
yeah also expending those take 6 hours + so its not worth
not unless u move partitions, and that wil take a full day on a hard drive
i mean, u can delete it, in case u think it's causing the BIOS hanging issue
it could be tbh
for the msreserved
alright. well it's up to u if u want to delete the odd first one
i keep my ntfs one cus it still got some files on it
that only work on windows
well its complicated
i just dont feel like waiting another day to get the extra 780gb
all u gotta do is use disks app
close gparted.
open 'disks'
select the ntfs one, and do 'repair filesystem'
once done (if it succeeds) then click the play icon
is that going to lose all the files?
no it shouldnt
wait first try this
select the ntfs one in disks, then click only the play icon. what happens?
@blissful quiver
it shows up with a triangle inside it?
yeah
click the gear
do 'edit filesystem' and give it a short label name if it doesnt already have one
i cant do that
it says to boot into windows twice or something
i can also just transfer those files to the ext4 partition then remove it 🤔
Yeah it dont want to
u can do that too
oh ok that can be done from hirens boot cd
hirens boot cd has a windows environment that can easily do chkdsk /f on the hard drive u tell it. (that will clear the dirty bit) u can also easily set the label from there as it has a typical windows file explorer with 'properties'
https://youtu.be/IsEKxJrmmy0?t=813 (13:33) timestamp for 2 minutes or so.

alright i will check it out thanks
probably wont need the /r bit just /f
Were you able to fix the partition issue?
