I made two live boot usbs,
With medicat ventoy,
( Why not normal ventoy? Cuz ventoy likes to die a lot )

Specs - amd r9 7900 (non-x)
Mobo - gigabyte gaming x ax v2
( Don't worry it didn't work on my asus proart x670e wifi either )
Gpu - asus 750ti 2gb pc
Ram - ddr5 32 gb running at stock speeds ( I don't overclock them )
Storage - 2 tb hdd partitioned in
30gb for root, 100gb for home, 30gb for root of another os, rest is is storage.

First try, hdmi plugged 750ti gpu.
And it showed me only black screen.
Num-lock worked.
So I connected it to Mobo hdmi
In the first time mint 22.1 got installed successfully that way.

Now since I wanted it to work with my nvidia gpu I installed 550 driver and guess what drivers installed.
I then shutdown pc.
Disconnected hdmi from Mobo connected to GPU.
And I get nothing.... Not even black screen just froze ad m logo looping around for over an hour.

Then I decided to reinstall guess what?
Now it won't go past install multi media step.

Yes, I tried checking, unchecking, it, connecting not connecting internet.

It didn't work.
I can use all the apps usable in live boot but can't install the damned os why???

All this time from the beginning
Secure boot - disabled, all keys had cleared,
Csm support - disabled,
Hdd - ahci,
Raid - disabled,
Fast boot - disabled,
Tpm - all tpms disabled,
Had and have Disconnected other drives,
Bios to the latest version,
All connections to hdd checked they are right multiple times swapped sata cables,

What am I doing wrong?
This used to be so easy on skylake CPUs and on those Mobos never had such issues on them.

And this is the same issue with other linux I tried, fedora, pop they just won't install no matter what.
Yes even with just ventoy, rufus without medicat.
But the same usbs can install windows immediately and successfully.

#

And this has been going on for 6 months now, I had given up 6 months ago bcuz of the edge iso and stuff.

#

Also, the graph,
Previously during successful install at the stage/step when selected or unselected install multimedia step, when pressed continue
The cpu graphs would run high, that they would show activity.

But now they don't show any activity at all, it goes up and goes down immediately and keeps on loading cursor.

might be the funky gpu

#

u can also try UUI from pendrivelinux.com if it at least gets you booted in live session - WITHOUT using the compat. mode option in mint's live grub menu

#

then from there can look further into it

#

go to system information in mint live start menu, and upload full report

#

try mint 21.3 then. the odd time 22 installer flakes

onyx bison
#

I am outside right now, I spent over 15 hours doing everything I can.

Yes, I tried 21.3 , 22, 22.1 all give the same results.

The best results so far are given by 22.1

Do you think it might be bios issue, as in something in bios changed but bios ain't able to show it.

I will report back as soon as possible.

onyx bison
#

here, even right now i am in live boot and after waiting for 15 minutes and no activity shown in task manager and the hdmi is plugged to mobo not gpu. here is the text

onyx bison
#

Now,
I tried with gpu removed
Yep still the same issue

onyx bison
real cradle
#

what part of the install gives trouble. describe the effect.

#

I would say, try installing with the nvidia gpu physically removed

#

and make 2 or 3 partitions ahead of time on the target drive

#

using gparted. one for EFI (first), main one for OS (ext4), and one linux-swap

#

First prepare the target drive for install.

#

then like this; (home partition and swap partition are optional)

#

make the ESP first with specs shown, then hit the apply checkmark in gparted toolbar.

#

once it is made, right click it on its details line: manage flags> put the boot and esp flags on it.

onyx bison
#

it is stuck here forever

real cradle
#

once in the manual installer, (the something else option) ^^ simply hit "change" for the ext4 partition, and put USE AS: to ext4 journ. fs, and mountpoint to / (doesnt even need format since you already did) then adjust the bootloader dropdown to be heeding my red text shown above

real cradle
onyx bison
real cradle
#

yes

#

it will and it warns as such

onyx bison
#

okay... that i cant do then.

but on the other hand i already have what you said on the drive. all the partitions, you said and such, and formatted too. but there is also an ext 4 partition at bottom lvl where my data is, yes it is also ext4. formatted

real cradle
#

did u make efi partition at start of disk?

#

show a pic from DISKS app of it

real cradle
#

tag me if you need assistance with the manual installer page

#

if im around, I'll help

onyx bison
#

I am trying to install something,
Fedora right now a peculiar moment I saw.

So right now can't share/click screenshot ( it's in the process of installation )

onyx bison
real cradle
#

that's gparted, not Disks

#

change the flags on partition 1

#

also, in gparted, go to the View menu, click 'device info`

#

@onyx bison

onyx bison
#

Disks didn't load up so I sent this. It's still loading..... Disks app

real cradle
#

damn

#

that's concerning.

#

anyway, send a new ss of gparted after changing the flags on p1, and with the view thing

onyx bison
#

Okay, so this was weird. Restarted and disks worked immediately

onyx bison
real cradle
#

yes. u should highlight each partition, click the gear, do 'edit fs' and make a short succinct label for all the unlabelled ones

onyx bison
#

until you come back online, the funny weird thing. apparently the other way to install linux mint is to install fedora before hand. someone had pointed out there exp on reddit comment. then i realized the first try i gave to mint yesterday, it indeed was installed on fedora. but to install fedora i took 4-5 hours (referring to loading screen)

oh okay you are here, brb

real cradle
#

partition name =/= label

#

in gparted:

change the flags on partition 1 of the 2 TB to what i mentioned
also, in gparted, go to the View menu, click 'device info`

onyx bison
#

loading gparted.......... this is gonna take a while

real cradle
#

perhaps some fs errors?

onyx bison
#

okay it loaded up

real cradle
#

u can use DISKS, highlight each ext4 partition, hit gear icon, and "check filesystem"

onyx bison
real cradle
#

just look at your gparted ss above

#

just p1 needs flag changed really

onyx bison
real cradle
#

looks good. did all the fs checks come out clean?

onyx bison
real cradle
#

at that rate, sda7 will take all night

#

and I can't really say if that's normal or not

#

I don't think fs check supposed to take so long

#

maybe on a partition that has 10 trillion directories

#

hopefully your 'data' one doesn't.

onyx bison
real cradle
#

In Disks app, you can also click the dots menu at top right, and look at SMART data. To read if the disk has many bad or reallocated sectors, or high rate of errors

onyx bison
#

you know, i think this it for me. my finals are coming. i cant spend more time right now. but this trick it works, now i didnt try it intentionally but since i already had a fedora which would not boot same no screen no matter what, yesterday i thought may be 22.1 might have stuff fixed until now, and my got, it mint got installed and worked until it didnt................... and then while looking for solution i found that comment. the other way seems to format the entire drive....... yeah or to get a ssd, but not enough time to tinker around anymore.

onyx bison
onyx bison
#

good night bro

#

Ah, right while the check was going I tried again installing it was again stuck at loading.... Multimedia codec step.

onyx bison
# real cradle In Disks app, you can also click the dots menu at top right, and look at SMART d...

Okay,
I I had two hdds,
One where I couldn't install Linux.
Other just recently started giving me issues when my psu blasted.

  • luckily I had bought a 8tb drive I managed to copy paste the data I needed with the help of live boot
  • now the pain in the butt hdd on which windows was installed and started giving issues after psu blast,
I managed to install Linux mint on it. Successfully no issues.
#

But I am hesitant to install nvidia drivers.
Right now using igpu of amd 7900.

real cradle
#

if you want to experiment, first ensure secure boot it off. You can check with certainty in linux with mokutil --sb-state

#

then if the nvidia gpu is made within last 5 years, go with the recommended driver from Driver Manager.

#

now the pain in the butt hdd on which windows was installed and started giving issues after psu blast,
Is this the Samsung SSD (Evo) shown in the pics above? @onyx bison

onyx bison
onyx bison
#

my first ever screenshot on this system!!

(press alt+print)

onyx bison
real cradle
#

ok that's ur working EFI that has booted linux (p1) now show the actual drive with linux

onyx bison
real cradle
#

i'd recommend relabelling the partitions like last time. jsut so it shows easier if troubleshooting via terminal

#

eg: lsblk -f

#

so this is solved anyway. If need addition help on other topics, make new support thread in appropriate channel.

onyx bison
real cradle
#

yes. and u can see that linux relies in this case on your nvme to boot. just remember that.

#

dont mess with it though.

onyx bison
# real cradle dont mess with it though.

are u sure? this is another hdd, i had made sure to install efi to 2tb hdd only, this ss is of another hdd which had linux mint in it. it still glows blue but doesnt show any os while booting

#

oh right the star thing

real cradle
#

i heard it's a bug or u didnt set it right. did u set it to the dev name of the device for bootlader and the partition number,.. or just the dev name of device

onyx bison
onyx bison
#

i had set to the 2tb hdd

real cradle
#

sdc isn't even this linux install.

#

sda is.

#

i can see it all from the lsblk result

onyx bison
onyx bison
real cradle
onyx bison
real cradle
#

if it's blue, all it means is it's selected by your mouse

#

if it's system vital, (or referenced in fstab file) it has a star

onyx bison
#

i need one last help, there is no linux mint app to see temps and percents like hwinfo, can you recommend me some apps or channels plz?

real cradle
#

if it's mounted, it shows a play icon within the partition itself

#

yes install psensor. then configure it how you like in its options

onyx bison
real cradle
#

if the graph area doesnt show right away, just muck with it abit.. drag the separator between graph n sensors table

real cradle
onyx bison
real cradle
#

you mean menubar?

onyx bison
real cradle
#

probably. see its options

#

or else log-out and in if on a dark theme

onyx bison
#

on positive note

#

psensor is working!!

real cradle
#

good.

onyx bison
# real cradle good.

this is final final , the scroll bars on any windows are too thin compared to windows 10

also, after solved what should i do with this thread?

real cradle
#

then right-click this thread title on left, edit tags to 'solved'
