Hey I'm trying to install the latest version of linux mint cinnamon. I selected to wipe the drives previous contents. After the „Who are you“ section there is supposed to be a window with a progress bar but instead i remain at the who are you section with the continue button clicked and the cursor shows that it is busy.
I left it yesterday like this for about an hour and it didnt finish. My machine is quite old but still very capable (i7 3770, 32gb ddr3, nvme ssd, rtx 3060)

Is it going to finish eventually or do i need to do something?

first, do a clean restart into the live environment

#

then start gparted, and pick the correct drive to wipe

remote pumice
#

and then the normal installation procedure?

toxic spoke
#

yes

remote pumice
#

it doesnt seem to change the behavior. It gets stuck after creating the partitions tho (it did that previously as well)

ok good. this is fine. It means you're in EFI mode

#

here's what you can try:

#

restart live usb again

#

do same as before with gparted to wipe disk and choose GPT

#

(pic above)

#

then run the installer, and do the "something else" option

#

then tag me when you're there. in the chart page of it

alright

#

im there @toxic spoke

toxic spoke
#

ok

#

im checking

#

ok minimize gparted.

#

in the installer window, highlight the line "free space" then click the + button

#

make primary partition,

#

size: 105 MB

#

USE AS: EFI System Partition,,, format= yes

#

tell me when you're ready

#

@remote pumice

remote pumice
#

i wasnt asked to format and it made a 103mb partition, but otherwise im ready

toxic spoke
#

good. now see near bottom, there's dropdown menu for bootloader,

#

set it to /dev/nvme0n1p1

#

ok next click again free space (remaining) and click +

#

make as primary partition , rest of drive size, USE AS: ext4 journ. fs

#

format=yes

remote pumice
#

do i need a mount point?

toxic spoke
#

ah yes, set to /

#

which is the root or base point

toxic spoke
remote pumice
#

efi is p1 and selected as bootloader

toxic spoke
#

if so, then click Install now

toxic spoke
remote pumice
#

the progress bar is still not appearing

toxic spoke
#

oh my

#

check in BIOS, make sure the nvme drive (storage settings/ advanced settings) is AHCI mode, RAID off

#

the last resort is make those damn partitions again first using gparted, same sizes i said. just use FAT32 for efi partition, then apply, then rclick it, manage flags> and add two flags, boot and esp

remote pumice
#

gonna check again but its likely not it

doesnt seem to change the behavior. Could using a different mint release help?
How much space does mint take on each partition? There are 1.63mib 5.88gib used currently (not sure if that comesfrom the partition itself tho)

toxic spoke
#

seems incomplete. an efi partion with one linux OS on it takes up about 30 MB, and a proper, complete Mint install uses up about 10 GB

#

you could try Mint 21.3

#

the very odd time i've seen installer issues on 22x

toxic spoke
#

the amounts i said first are ON TOP of this overhead

remote pumice
#

my setup may be a bit weird lol
the nvme is connected via an adapter to a pcie 1x slot. otherwise i found that when i formst and mount the drive it says that 12gb are used

toxic spoke
#

when u make a new partition table, none is used

#

when u put filesystems on it, some data space gets used

#

once u actually install an OS, even more gets used

i made a boot drive using ventoy because balenaEtcher wasnt working with 21.3 or 21.2.
Using 21.3 it is actually continuing with the progress bar.
Thanks for your help!
