#Customizing AntiX iceWM

Lol ofc faster , many are faster that mint cinneamon tbh , it is good but like the ones i tried xfce , lxqt , ubuntu cinneamon , but it depends bcs for example ubuntu and mint cinneamon arent the same in speed and smoothness , the same i tried once xfce it was good but tried debian facile (xfce french customized with preinstalled stuff) and it was smoother than debian xfce

nocturne trench
#

example ubuntu and mint cinneamon arent the same in speed and smoothness ,

#

which one felt more responsive and fast overall?

#

between those two

loud thistle
#

I am looking now into mate , found it has hot corners but when i am searching i cant find it to activate it ๐Ÿค”

loud thistle
#

But i need to check it more to be sure , especially with browser and windows๐Ÿ˜… with discord and stuff

nocturne trench
#

ok. and when you tried Mint Cinnamon, was it on the same computer, same RAM installed, etc?

loud thistle
#

Not sure ๐Ÿค” , maybe i tested it but not sure after antix or not

nocturne trench
#

antiX is my home. for as long as I run this old computer

#

and even when I buy a new computer, this old laptop will still be a reliable backup.

loud thistle
#

Yeah

#

If u buy a new one , any distros and dektop in mind ?

nocturne trench
#

I will probably go with something KDE

#

maybe Tuxedo OS

loud thistle
#

Yeah kde one if the best , for my computer it feels less smooth than cinneamon and mate but ita really good since u can do everything and what is good about is that there is example of how customizing it

nocturne trench
#

kde makes styling so easy, a baby can do it.

loud thistle
#

I found like fb groups , reddit ,yt videos all on it , while mate and budgie and others are so less present , maybe gnome and gnome actually doesnt need that much customization

nocturne trench
#

I'd still be using it on Q4OS, if my old laptop didn't die

loud thistle
loud thistle
nocturne trench
#

yeah if you mean it has a mass following and many demonstrations, n articles

nocturne trench
#

that's why I got it, because I first experimented with Q4 trinity years before, and really thought it was cool. So when I heard they had the new version with both DE's, I got it.

loud thistle
nocturne trench
#

mkay. idk

#

u can try adding compton as before.

#

i forgot if you need to disable Marco (the default compositor)

#

maybe not

loud thistle
#

Like another compositor

#

Is running

nocturne trench
#

k

#

i guess u can research how to replace marco on MATE

#

if it is possible.

#

I know ppl like to replace compositors with Compiz sometimes, for cool effects.

#

if it requires a reboot, you'll need to make a persistent thing with ventoy, for ubuntu mate

loud thistle
#

But no compton

#

The default one was xpresent

nocturne trench
#

try marco: no compositor

#

see how it behaves

#

if still blinks the windows, then run compton from terminal.

#

may require a relog (not a reboot)

loud thistle
#

I tried hybrid and it doesnt blink now

#

๐Ÿ˜… maybe first times i enter to a specefic window ๐Ÿค”

nocturne trench
#

hybrid picom?

loud thistle
#

Yeah

#

I tried before no compositor

nocturne trench
#

alright. see how it handles a while

#

did u check out MATE Tweak?

#

their Mutiny form is a similar work to Ubuntu Unity desktop

loud thistle
#

Even hot corners it is said that are available there but couldnt find them ๐Ÿค”

nocturne trench
#

well i guess u'd have to look in Mate settings/ control center

loud thistle
#

๐Ÿ˜…i think only kde and cinneamon have it already preinstalled

nocturne trench
#

because a FUNCTION must be set to a corner first, right

loud thistle
#

Yeah i need to activate it first but for example kde available only in normal version ,but in cinneamon even lts have it

#

But u need to activate it not like gnome

#

On mate it isnt available to config it

nocturne trench
#

I thought you said MATE was said to have it?

#

where does it say MATE has hotcorners?

loud thistle
#

Found it in a web page , it is said it was available in tweaks , bit with chat gpt , it said maybe bcs ui changed of mate

nocturne trench
#

I looked at this whole article, no mention of it.

#

unless it is in Control Center

loud thistle
#

Control center there is nothing

nocturne trench
#

hm. nothing in the DESKTOP section?

#

if there is such a section

loud thistle
#

There int , mostly its all in tweak tool

#

I found couple commands to install hot corners or maybe similar bit not sure if its the best idea ot better just try cinneamon or kde ๐Ÿค” for stability

nocturne trench
#

try the commands

#

nothing to lose if you're in live mode

loud thistle
#

I ll test them later ๐Ÿ˜…

#

One is mate hud whixh is on github

#

Lol seems complex

#

And one dconf editor , but not obvious ๐Ÿ˜… i think it a loosing game

nocturne trench
#

dconf editor has adjustments for everything. but you need very exact guidance

loud thistle
#

It feels like no one uses cinnamon with ubuntu and only mint ๐Ÿ˜…

#

Especially ubuntu cinnamon is like 5gb iso and mint just 3 ๐Ÿ˜…

nocturne trench
#

yeah ofc

#

I think it's there just to be there, for Ubuntu lovers.

nocturne trench
#

This is maybe what you like. has style changer, modified gnome. ubuntu base. see vid

#

Zorin Core iso

loud thistle
loud thistle
#

And while installation i can just stay with one style

nocturne trench
#

yes see the video

#

the part where he deals with Zorin Appearance

loud thistle
#

Ahh it feels like just style and not full desktops , its good since it ahs workplaces and hot corners of gnome but still not gnome , its a new things never seen it before , bvs others all based on one desktop , but here u cant even know which desktop u are using besides gnome since it has different default styles , but in other hand its limited in customization if aomeone like something elae ๐Ÿ˜… ๐Ÿ˜…

#

But use not bad of ram. Like 1.5

nocturne trench
#

did u see the video, the style changer part?

#

and u can of course change the icons, if those crazy ones aren't your thing

loud thistle
nocturne trench
#

kool

#

well, why not stick with that?

nocturne trench
loud thistle
nocturne trench
#

so, 900; reasonabl

loud thistle
#

I think its a bit liggtweight bcs i feel less animation than debian gnome

nocturne trench
#

I think he mentions that in vid, when he showed the appearance switcher to gnome-style

loud thistle
#

But what is featuring zorin os ? Is there any stuff besides the looks we can change ?

nocturne trench
#

it comes with a nice easy shop (gnome-software) runs 'buntu LTS base, should be nice n stable. fairly easy to theme. easy to use.

loud thistle
#

The one wiih flatpacks ?

nocturne trench
#

i think the appearance changer is the biggest feature (similar to Mate tweak tool) if u get tired of one look of ui , real easy switch

nocturne trench
nocturne trench
loud thistle
#

Nice

nocturne trench
#

a person in this server named Float really used it well

#

said it was the only stable working one for their hardware (which can ofc be true, depending on hardware)

#

zorin comes with nvidia, WINE, snaps, flatpaks, and is fairly popular/well-known

loud thistle
#

But maybe bcs less animation , its good but not smooth feeling as gnome original version ๐Ÿ˜…

#

Lol, i installed zorin allongside windows , but when i checked now windows disk manager , it is installed on my second hdd ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿค”

#

In isntallation i did it automatic allongside , dont get it why it didnt install it on same ssd

nocturne trench
#

i guess do manual install

#

eg: above, should look similar

#

click (Change) to delete the old linux ext4 one, and mount as / and format . all on dev/nvme of course

#

then use gparted to delete zorin from the hdd

nocturne trench
#

do NOT tick format for either the EFI partition, nor any of the microsoft or windows ones on the nvme

loud thistle
#

For efi boot partition of linux do i change it on the one i made with 512 mb ? Bcs on antix i used to do that but here on zorin it crashes

loud thistle
#

Now i reinstalled it all iver again by shrinking ssd from windows disk manager , then the installation was easy ๐Ÿ˜…

#

๐Ÿ˜‚ yesterday this is why the installation lasted forever and i was telling myself that disyro is so heavy , now on ssd is much faster ๐Ÿ˜… this is why people apways recommand upgrading to ssd even before upgrading ram ๐Ÿค”

nocturne trench
#

absolutely

nocturne trench
#

Specs. nvme SSD

loud thistle
#

I am thinking of testing mx linux and see if its customizable๐Ÿ˜…

nocturne trench
#

ofc it is. it's xfce.

#

you can get more xfwm-themes from synaptic, use different background pic/patterns for taskbar

#

different pointers

#

can also disable the xfwm compositor easily, and use Compiz for cool effects

#

install totally different wallpaper packs, easily from synaptic

loud thistle
nocturne trench
#

or via wallpaper wbsites

#

the order is kde/trintiy>xfce>cinnamon>lxde/lxqt>gnome

#

Cosmic DE, once finally ready with all bugs worked out will be maybe 2nd after kde

loud thistle
#

๐Ÿ˜… didnt think xfce is that good

#

I mean for something elegant , and modern not just for windows xp and 7 style

nocturne trench
#

U can shorten panels, float them. Cinnamon doesnt even have that. and only plasma 6 recently got floating

loud thistle
#

Floating ?

nocturne trench
#

as in when panel is lifted a few pixels from bottom edge of screen

loud thistle
#

Ahh i ve seen some pics where that bottom panel is lifted , but i think available only on the new version and not lts of kubuntu

#

Didnt know mx linux has that๐Ÿ˜…

#

Lol but i need to get that stylish panel before , bcs lifting the old simple classic one isnt worth it ๐Ÿ˜… , and i need to see if its possible for hot corners and workplaces first

nocturne trench
#

nah no hot corners on xfce, pretty sure

#

no fullscreen workspace chooser or expo mode on xfce. that's only a gnome/kde/cinnamon thing

#

u get workspace pager applet on panel, that's it

#

or keyboard ctrl-alt-arrows

nocturne trench
#

there's another very light distro that's so good, similar to Antix. it's called LXLE

#

fresh boot.

loud thistle
#

nice , i knew that lxde is lighter than xfce but not lighter than wm too

#

๐Ÿ˜… i am testing again linux lite

loud thistle
#

but it feels like its consuming a lot of ram , on a fresh boot its already 1.5 g b

nocturne trench
#

cuz it might be cache

loud thistle
# nocturne trench cuz it might be cache

i checked htop 1.3 to 1.5 , and top 1.9 , didnt check task manager , but i think its normal bcs i remember a year ago when we talked about linux first time and mx linux , we tested linux lite and found it a bit heavy compared to other xfce distros , maybe bcs all the tools combined with

nocturne trench
#

very strange indeed

#

clean xfce+Debian is just around 600

#

I still liked playing with Linux Lite though

nocturne trench
loud thistle
#

Htop 1.2 -1.3
Top 1.5 , 1.6
Task manager 1.5

nocturne trench
#

so it's not 1.9 in top

#

that sounded crazy

loud thistle
#

Lol maybe bcs i opened before google chrome but i closed it for couple minutes , maybe there was some stuff still workung back then

#

But i tried even before many distros and all ahve like 500 mb around and maybe more between htop and top

loud thistle
#

Linux lite is having which features that can be better than mx linux ?

#

Bcs it seems these two are precomfig with so many tools

nocturne trench
#

i know lite has some kind of extra thing in settings panel. like nvidia driver installer, timeshift, and Lite software (a type of boutique software shop for common/popular apps)

nocturne trench
loud thistle
#

ahh nice , i need that app

#

๐Ÿ˜… found some fans like u

#

the problem in mx linux if i change panel to horizontal to make it on top ,it doesnt goes automatically , there is some issues with it since it hides my files and my open windows

#

It hides all my windows from the top

nocturne trench
#

use mx tools> tweaks to move panel

#

not sure what u mean by hiding

loud thistle
# nocturne trench not sure what u mean by hiding

For example in the pic ,in a browser u see that bar where there is the minimize and close signs on the right and the windows opened in a browser on the left , if i change the panel to horizontal top , when i opened any window or browser they all goes under the panel and i cant see the wiindows opened and minimize and close button

#

( in second pic u see on firefox on top , there is just window of mx linux forum , and on the left u see the minimize and close signs but in the first pic u can see when i changed the panel to top , u cant see the top of firefox )

nocturne trench
#

or logout and in

#

or customize firefox toolbar: show system titlebar

loud thistle
loud thistle
#

When i logged out , my keyboard nunbers are locked

#

So i couldnt log in ๐Ÿ˜…
I restarted the computer and i tried again but same problem.

#

And its obvious , bcs even the 2 icons on desktop they goes under the panel

#

Like here u can see the two icons

#

And here u cant see the first one and it goes under the panel when i change it

nocturne trench
#

is this live, or persistent, or installed?

#

@loud thistle

loud thistle
#

i was testing it since yesterday

nocturne trench
loud thistle
nocturne trench
#

ok try not doing it that way maybe

#

use mx tweak

#

then it puts the time on the right, and is more sane

loud thistle
nocturne trench
#

type 'tweak' in start menu

#

first tab should have a thing for panel

loud thistle
#

oh it worked , but why it didnt work with normal xfce , i though mx linux is stable

nocturne trench
#

idk i cant answer that

#

it ALWAYS worked better via the tweak tool

#

eg: it wouldnt show backwards, the clock on left, etc

loud thistle
#

i think mx linux is stable and good with all the tweaks but maybe the tweaks arent that compatible , this is why on kde for example is bad , even on fluxbox i tried once , and found some issues

#

i tried even debian xfce , on htop its 750 mb

#

but debian needs a lot of customization and manual config i think

#

xubuntu is a bit heavy , i think i tested all the 3 and ram is above 1.2

nocturne trench
loud thistle
#

yeah

nocturne trench
#

brb

nocturne trench
loud thistle
#

But i ve never thought its a problem ๐Ÿคฃ, since on linux its true when i go with lock i it didnt show me numbers too, i generally goes with the ones on the right of keyboard , especially i use french azerty keyboard so i had to choose that at each installation even though i use more english than french , i tried even other layouts but same , nothing changed

#

I use laptop and a another keyboard and both have different only in the upper numbers

#

On my laptop , numbers are down so normally they can appear with lock , while on my second keyboard they are up so it needs shift+

loud thistle
#

on windows it works normally

#

i heard ones advice french (us ) layout but its qwerty

loud thistle
#

@nocturne trench hi , what is xfce4 panel ? , i ve found this menu style , i liked it but couldnt make it ๐Ÿคฃ

#

It feels elegant and simple ๐Ÿ˜… i like it

nocturne trench
#

the first pic is the "applications menu" applet, instead of Whisker menu

#

and the task buttons show names (they are the Window Buttons) and simple edit to 'show button labels'

#

the second picture has perhaps a 'lock screen' applet, the standard stuff, and a Power/session applet

#

edit panel preferences: Items tab

#

and edit items button for each

#

remove whisker menu item, and replace with applications menu. (to search for apps, you will need to do alt+F3)

#

or rofi

nocturne trench
#

the GTK theme (affects xfce menu and most system apps) is some purple thing

#

icons are some Papirus variant, or other similar icon set

#

@loud thistle get all that? ๐Ÿ˜›

loud thistle
#

Lol step by step ๐Ÿคฃ

#

I ll try the menu first

#

But found the whisker is better than application menu

#

๐Ÿค” like functionnality

nocturne trench
#

well because it's searchable, and has a few shortcut buttons like for shutdown, and settings manager

loud thistle
#

Is there any menu similar to it but better functionnality

nocturne trench
#

similar to what?

#

single pane menu like in pic? or the 2-pane menu (whisker) ?

loud thistle
#

For Application menu style , for whisker found just thw big style similar to windows or with icons , not much difference

nocturne trench
#

Application menu (xfce) is the basic one. It's single pane, no search. But as you can see it still has some favourites near the top, and a shutdown logout option

loud thistle
#

But i remember i tried once a menu , was just one pane but has search ๐Ÿค”

#

Forget from where exactely ๐Ÿ˜…

nocturne trench
#

not sure.

#

Mate Brisk menu.. google that for pictures

#

but idk if it will work on xfce

loud thistle
#

I think it was on debian facile version , maybe i ll test it tomorrow to see

nocturne trench
#

Antix IceWM menu

loud thistle
#

Lol yeah

nocturne trench
#

brisk menu is dual-pane

#

quite similar to Whisker actually

#

though Whisker is slightly more customizable. u can rearrange positions of search bar and the quick buttons

#

you can also SHRINK the size of category icons and of program icons in the Whisker menu

#

(or enlarge)

#

like I said, you can use Rofi program to act as a search launcher.

#

or fehlstart

#

or just alt+F3

#

@loud thistle have you refreshed the apt catalog since you installed?

#

(apt update)

#

if you have, check in the terminal: apt search -v app-select

loud thistle
nocturne trench
#

it's the same app searcher program that Antix uses

#

to find anything installed on the system easily

loud thistle
#

๐Ÿ˜… i tested xubuntu but dont feel it my thing , not sure why its not like how kubuntu feels , its the same between debian gnome and ubuntu , didnt try ubuntu a lot but liked debian more

#

๐Ÿ˜‚ searched a lot of debian xfce but everywhere says no its not good , and xubuntu better with softwares latest ones for twitch and discord streams and some weak games , so i dont know what to think

nocturne trench
#

I played with Debian xfce, live mode for 2 or 3 straight days, no reboots, and it was very good. ran discord and browsing well. that's all i tried

loud thistle
nocturne trench
#

that's not true anymore. Debian 12 has all non-free drivers, right out of the gate.

loud thistle
#

I check manjaro on yt , it has the same appearance changing features like zorin os

nocturne trench
#

and maybe not even.

loud thistle
nocturne trench
#

stuff that isn't open source,

#

kept secret, under licence, patented, corporate, stuff like that

loud thistle
#

But even before we cpuld find them ?

#

Like discord

#

๐Ÿค” was always available on store in linux ?

nocturne trench
#

Linux Mint shows corporate apps in Software Manager because they're Flatpaks

#

you can easily enable Flatpak in pure Debian by using the simple instructions on flathub.org for Debian

#

or just install deb packages from official corporate websites, like for Zoom, Discord, or Spotify

#

and WPS Office

nocturne trench
loud thistle
#

can u believe that i was just watching that theme and found it from another website

#

๐Ÿ˜‚

#
#

was watching these two

nocturne trench
#

nice coincidence. the one I sent is centered around Mint with Cinnamon desktop. the most popular thing in this server.

#

bit hard his accent n speed, so hence why i said put on the subtitles

loud thistle
nocturne trench
#

yeah his websites and procedures would work the same way. just u go in xfce settings and choose the appearance item to make final changes

loud thistle
nocturne trench
#

xfce has 'appearance' setting for 90% of stuff and 'window manager' setting for the titlebars

#

that's main difference

loud thistle
#

in linux , is there a way to customize taskbars , for example the design of battery and all the stuff on the right ?

#

besides with design already available in the system

nocturne trench
#

that's much harder for the user. it's more deeply incorporated into the desktop environment and its native code with symbolic icons

loud thistle
#

i saw some themes gets updated , so each time i need to delete and download new files to add them ?

nocturne trench
#

and stay away from plasma / kwin themes unless ur on kde

loud thistle
nocturne trench
#

clearly GTK

loud thistle
nocturne trench
#

hi there

#

what's imwheel for?

#

did u get new Kubuntu 25, or old one (LTS)

nocturne trench
loud thistle
# nocturne trench what's imwheel for?

Lts , since kubuntu or any other desktop has mouse scrolling speed up feature , i found imwheel , its with command and u save that command at start up and u can set up the wheel speed of mouse on linux

nocturne trench
#

ok

#

I thought KDE Plasma had that built-in?

#

what's the desktop info? do inxi -S in kubuntu

loud thistle
# nocturne trench I thought KDE Plasma had that built-in?

Just the newer version and wayland and not the lts , even on kubuntu lts the scale screen isnt workimg at all , so i cant change it to 125% and found that problem isnt workimg on any linux distros , either its missing or not functionnal , sometimea i find it but when i go 125% it just goes randomly too zoomed not like in windows

loud thistle
nocturne trench
#

for "System" , as in Operating System

loud thistle
#

Yeah , its like usual infos , since kde plazma 5.27

loud thistle
nocturne trench
#

and OS version. i guess ur on 24.04 Kubuntu

loud thistle
nocturne trench
#

does it say X.org , X11 etc

#

or Wayland?

loud thistle
loud thistle
nocturne trench
#

yep ok

#

now u also know how to check

loud thistle
#

Hi , i tested mint lmde 6 ๐Ÿ˜… , after installation it got stuck on screen when it asks to remove usb and press enter , i removed usb and when i pressed enter nothing happened , i was forced to shut it down manually ๐Ÿคฃ things dont look good from the start

#

Even though lmde supposed to be even more stable

nocturne trench
#

check bios order

loud thistle
#

bios order , why ?

nocturne trench
#

for LMDE to work

nocturne trench
#

but you can virtualize, and test out the look and feel of so many linux distros through the web browser. even can use the terminal, play with their included apps a bit

#

I was having a look at Spiral OS xfce, just to see what version xfce it is currently using (Spiral directly uses Debian repos)

loud thistle
#

Tried again kubuntu 24.10 , its not ltsc version , i see that always in linux distros the display scaling isnt working ๐Ÿ˜… , but the good thing og that version is u diny need it , when i logged in , it just show me the right display screen for me like on windows , too bad its not that smooth ,

nocturne trench
#

can't have everything on an old i3

loud thistle
#

Yeah ๐Ÿ˜…

loud thistle
#

Is it true ? Not sure if cpu or gpu they arr talking about ๐Ÿค”

nocturne trench
#

idk. i ran cinnamon i think was version 5.2 maybe from Mint 20 on this ancient dualcore and it runs

#

not too badly either, for what the laptop is

loud thistle
#

Yeah for me too , ubuntu cinnamon was fast and smooth , even a little bit more than munt , but maybe they refer when playing games kr streams

nocturne trench
#

probably

loud thistle
#

What is ur experience with spiral ? What is its philosophy ๐Ÿ˜… , i mean i see many distros based on debian but sometimes i dont get why they made it exactely , especially all just say lightweight but its unique purpoae compared to mx linux , linux lite , and others based on xfce ๐Ÿ˜…

nocturne trench
#

has some backup system built-in. and maybe flatpak pre-enabled. Your choice of desktops.

nocturne trench
#

any news, @loud thistle ?

loud thistle
nocturne trench
#

yep i've heard of that one. Seems good.

nocturne trench
nocturne trench
#

hello @loud thistle

loud thistle
nocturne trench
#

heyy how's it going man?

loud thistle
#

good , what about you ?

nocturne trench
#

this is supposedly an official distro. Debian 12 MATE. look at the demo vid ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

loud thistle
loud thistle
#

@nocturne trench hi , i heard china is trying to make a new os for mobile something different that andoid and apple called harmony os , any idea on it ? lol but why they changed it from android , is it purely based on google , bcs i thought its just an os not limited with one company like microsoft and apple

nocturne trench
#

sorry i dont follow any mobile news

loud thistle
# nocturne trench sorry i dont follow any mobile news

i tested also many browsers these days on my other windows 10 to get an idea on linux ๐Ÿ˜… , but fro mfirefox and all its forks like librewolf, waterfox, mercury, floorp , all uses the same amount of ram when i tested it on a twitch stream , but for a reason some says like thta forks is faster and lightweight but didnt see difference , tried the same with google chrome and ungoogled chrome when i saw some saying that ungoogled chrome is faster and lighter since they removed many things from chrome , but with same twitych stream they both use same amount of ram ๐Ÿค”

@nocturne trench hi , do u have an idea on password managers ? never used them , searched on them but didnt get the idea , bcs i heard its better since password managers can give u better passwords than password i can make since to make big complex password and remember them is hard , so that password manager will remember for me , but then ๐Ÿค” for my accounts i have already a password , do password manager will change them or something ?

nocturne trench
#

no, a password manager will not change any existing password.

#

that's up to you , when you go to the website account management properties (for whatever site) and make new password, then if pw mgr is installed, it may suggest.

#

I would still write it all down in a paper book. holy shit

#

i dont trust those things.

#

you can read up on Bitwarden, keepass , etc

#

perhaps read up on Yubi Key also.

tall loom
#

yo, I do not mean to highjack this thread but I have a quick unrelated question if you guys don't mind

nocturne trench
#

you are DEFINITELY hijacking this thread. get out please.

tall loom
#

aight, bet

thorny tree
# nocturne trench i dont trust those things.

lol this is why i always did it and saved it on paper , but to make a good complex one with 15 characters mixed , and with time having many websites to remember ๐Ÿคฃ its hard , i heard of keepass being ofline for people that have trust issues

nocturne trench
#

mhm

#

i'd still record everything on paper book. some good book u hide, and no one touches, and you wont forget

#

in case software breaks or whatever

#

u dont want to be locked out like a dog after from your important sites

thorny tree
# nocturne trench u dont want to be locked out like a dog after from your important sites

lol imagine using a software then they block it and stop working , and can never access to the accounts and websites , the same idea i come with once and said maybe i ll use a new mail provider like tuta , but i am afraid since tuta mail isnt big like google , so if its shut down , i can never acess my websites and accounts , not like google having everything , so near impossible to get that problem

undone spear
thorny tree
# nocturne trench how's it going Emp?

hi good , wbu ? , i am still with mx linux since xfce fast but a lot of features compared to xfce mint for now , didnt try mint yet , for me mint is better with cinnamon , i tried it months ago

nocturne trench

๐Ÿ™‚

thorny tree
nocturne trench

awww i know it'd be nice if it could

#

to have other options

thorny tree
# nocturne trench to have other options

tried to search for some custom roms , graphenos , since its without google and just open source apps , but same problem , my phone isnt supported , btw do u have an idea on cloudflare warp if it works on the new version of mint ?

nocturne trench
#

idk anything about cloudflare warp

nocturne trench
#

if it has a .deb package for installing on Ubuntu 24.04 the it should work on Mint 22x

Dude, my CPU usage is at 100% while my RAM isn't quite at 50%. Is there any way I can make Linux prioritize using RAM instead of the CPU?

#

In Windows it was the opposite, it prioritized using all RAM rather than the CPU.

still using MX fluxbox

but i do keep antix around as a backup

#

do you know any fun websites on the Internet?

#

I'm so bored these days and everything like the big sites suck and bore me

thorny tree
# nocturne trench still using MX fluxbox

nice , i used mx xfce till now , but from time to time i am testing others from kubuntu , mint , my recent one is mint cinnamon , for website what do u mean by fun websites ๐Ÿ˜… ?

nocturne trench
#

some fun as in interesting

#

not garbage big ones

#

i dont want to hear instagram, X, reddit, facebook, youtube, or discord. this is all SHIT

thorny tree
#

i dont use them that much , i a mostly into twitter and discord , reddit , other than that , i am into discovering movies and tv shows and reviews on letterboxd and serialzed

thorny tree
#

@nocturne trenchhi, how are u

nocturne trench
#

how are you?

thorny tree
#

I heard btw that discord is gonna add a face verfication or id verification for age next month , ๐Ÿ˜… discord is going wild

#

I mean from servers that make mobile phone a requirement to chat , and turbo with all the extra , and now face scan or id verficiation , nothing is private anymore๐Ÿค”

nocturne trench

yeah I hate it

#

@nocturne trench yo sup. i am having an issue with conky on zzz icewm. it isnt showing up at all

and grub background setup crashes my whole laptop

nocturne trench

ok. can you plz make a dedicated separate support thread

nocturne trench

and #1467735016250409020 message

thorny tree
nocturne trench
#

oh ok

thorny tree
#

@nocturne trench hi , how are u

#

Have u ever got a problem with libreoffice ? I installed mint before and libreoffice shortcuts were working okay from the start , but now when i was testimg different distros and returned to cinnamon mint , these shortcuts are all non visible on light mode

#

Before i installed and done and didnt need configuration ๐Ÿค” and worked without a problem in the light mode amd didnt force me to use dark mode which i am not a fan

#

But now lile that

#

And i tested mint cinnamon and mint lmde and same problem ๐Ÿ˜… tried to test de ian cinnamon but wprst experience in cpu , so bad on my computer

nocturne trench
#

just give me some minutes and i'll be back

nocturne trench
#

idk much about it. dont use it

#

please open l.o. Writer, and press ALT+PRTSCR keys and send screenshot here. photograph is crappy

thorny tree
#

its like this

#

when i installed mint before or even when i tested min on live session the shortcuts up are visible , but when i resinstalled it yesterday , they arent shown

#

in light mode

#

and force me to go for dark theme to see them like here

#

but a week ago i used mint and those shortcuts were visible with light mode and with the same theme from the start of a fresh installation

thorny tree
nocturne trench

youtube is heavy

u can use a youtube extension to block that .....

thorny tree

same browser?

thorny tree
#

Yeah firefox

nocturne trench

i think debian uses garbage firefox-esr

thorny tree

Especially i usually watch in 720por 1080 p max

nocturne trench

thorny tree
#

Cinnamon isnt using it ?

nocturne trench
#

no

#

it's standard firefox

thorny tree
#

Ahh i didnr pay attention to mint

nocturne trench
#

re: your icons. for L.O.

#

Check in Mint Themes > Advanced > Icons

#

make sure you are using the LIGHT icon set (when operating in light themes)

thorny tree
#

same problem

nocturne trench
#

Just to test

#

then show file manager

#

and then Writer after that

#

with separate screenshots

thorny tree
#

which high contrast icon?

nocturne trench
#

idk it's not there?

#

look through all the icon sets offered

nocturne trench
thorny tree
#

they are all different colors , there is no high contrast

#

๐Ÿ˜…

nocturne trench
#

anyone that says hi-color

#

scroll complete list

thorny tree
#

lol none

nocturne trench
#

hmmph

#

one moment

thorny tree
#

i am using lmde mint , i hope there is no differance with mint cinnamon

nocturne trench
#

oh pick something like mint-y-sand for icons

thorny tree
#

since both got mint

nocturne trench
#

then test file manager app and Writer and LO spreadsheets (calc)

thorny tree
#

same

nocturne trench
#

if u get it to test, save file

#

then extract complete archive

#

then put in ~/.icons

#

now

#

yesterday

thorny tree
#

now same problem

nocturne trench
#

not very nice contrast lol

thorny tree
nocturne trench
#

i know that

thorny tree
nocturne trench
#

check in libreoffice settings

thorny tree
#

i tested a thing yesterday of restart safe mode

#

but nothing changed i wanted to reset it

nocturne trench
#

open the administration category in start menu

#

tell me what u see there

#

open system administration

thorny tree
#

( btw i am testing kubuntu that has normal firefox and it goes to 65 cpu usage with just 1 video yt in 1080p , lol if i move the mouse it goes up to 85 % ๐Ÿคฃ

nocturne trench
#

what is cat /proc/cmd result?

nocturne trench
#

so might have something to do with it

#

65% is nothing anyway

#

for what you are asking the computer to do

thorny tree
nocturne trench
#

ok

thorny tree
nocturne trench
#

this shows any 'modes' and kernel

#

that have loaded at early boot

thorny tree
nocturne trench
#

yeah that's normal defaults

nocturne trench
#

then u can go on discord.com , sign in from firefox, and send screenshot of L.O. Writer here

#

if not, that's ok too

thorny tree
nocturne trench
#

ya i remember you saying it... I was curious to see a screenshot difference to compare

thorny tree
#

yeah , just couple min , lol i am redownloading the iso

thorny tree
nocturne trench
#

Installed LMDE:

#

LIVE-run LMDE

#

I see what you did, @thorny tree you must have (either through an update, or directly in L.O.) changed the icon pack

#

the new pack is clearly different shapes, not to mention bad contrast.

#

@thorny tree from live system, please run apt list -i libreoffice*

#

and note the precise version.

#

you may also go into the Help menu in Writer, and click About. for version exact

#

then boot to your installed LMDE, and check the same things and note the versions.

yes, it is a bit more agile than mx standard one

thorny tree
#

i tested last time kde but after somedays i had a problem when i downloaded files and wanted to save them on drive , it told me that cant paste the files some files on my hard drive , i thought my hard drive was boken , so i tried different hard drives and same problem , but on live session it worked , so i gave up on it
but now isee kdee using so much cpu just for one video , tested even debian kde and same problem , all uses more than 70% just for a 1080 yt video

#

so i am testing cinnamon distros a little

#

tested ubuntu cinnamon since ubuntu released its new lts versions

#

bur maybe i ll test fluxbox too , its been years

nocturne trench
thorny tree
#

zorin os i tested the new lite version , they made an xfce version not like the standard gnome desktop

nocturne trench
#

the live session in mx is a bit tricky, because u may have to save to live folder (Documents) and then cut/paste using superuser (admin)-mode file manager to other foreign drives. Probably same for Debian live

#

if you have any issues with drive permissions, let me know

thorny tree
#

for my problem of mx kde it was installed normally , i just couldnt paste my files from my computer to hard drive external , and i was doing it for couple day before it

nocturne trench
#

if external hard drive is NTFS, that may have issue

#

that is Windows file system

#

after a while, it gets in a dirty state, and Linux will treat it as read-only

thorny tree
#

i tested debian cinnamon too and it was so bad , dont know why , it was so laggy on my live session , it used so much cpu over 80% just for one yt video

thorny tree
# nocturne trench if external hard drive is NTFS, that may have issue

ahh yeah maybe it is , bcs at first i had the files on a a seagate hard drive and wanted to make a copy and change files and save it on another hard drive but didnt work on any of my other hard drives , it worked at first but one day i could copy and paste but for a reason each time one file get notification that it couldnt be pasted , and now i checked , my first hard drive is exfat and the rest were all ntfs

thorny tree
#

but damn , now my mard drives are more than 500 gb , some even almost 800 gb , so hard to format and change them to another format

nocturne trench
thorny tree
#

yes

nocturne trench
#

you have gparted on LMDE?

but when i plug in , nothing happen , even the light in it isnt even woking

run it and u should see usb on left. click it and show complete window

no need to maximize

thorny tree

just a sec

nocturne trench

oh that sucks.

#

no fix for that

#

there's some sketchy fixes but you need specialized software from chip manufacturer and needs Windows, and proper technique

thorny tree
#

damn

nocturne trench
#

u can try the dots menu

#

and choose format disk ,

#

but, i dont think will work

thorny tree

yeah , it doesnt work

on windows is it easy to fix it ?

nocturne trench
#

mehhh

#

let me see if I can find you a link I saw once....

#

#1265443311037186114 message

thorny tree
#

but how to clean them when they are already full ? i need to format them then ?

nocturne trench
#

no, it does not wipe them

#

u just boot the hirens iso. Then open command prompt as admin on desktop

#

and open File Explorer to see drive names/letters for all your drives

#

@thorny tree see second vid link first, for a quick rundown.

thorny tree
#

Btw for fluxbox i am testing it , and i now remember why i had a problem with it years ago. One problem is the brightness isnt working
And one main problem too is the menu

#

Like when i move the cursor it doesnt show me the thing i am on it

nocturne trench
#

and run it

#

then in the tray, you will see applet

#

click applet to open more view

#

move it higher up

#

click >> button to see more

#

you should be able to adjust backlight brightness plus video brightness

thorny tree
nocturne trench
#

check the tray area.

#

it doesnt open a typical window.

#

@thorny tree

thorny tree
#

Ahh yeah i see it now , lol fluxbox is so weird and different in how u expect things to react ๐Ÿ˜…

nocturne trench
#

well , i told you it's an APPLET

#

not an APPLICATION

thorny tree
#

Btw what is better lmde or mint ? I was thinking of using lmde but i feel like full mint can be also interesting since updates with new stuff , lol not sure what to try next

nocturne trench
#

eh i don't know. they're quite similar. and both versions' Cinnamon desktop get latest updates.

#

LMDE doesn't use PPA's, because Debian. (However, work is currently in development to support this kind of thing)

#

By the Debian developers

#

but if you just get your main software from the Package Manager anyway, or official deb files from trustworthy sources, then you don't need to think about PPA

nocturne trench
#

you can also just press Windows key , and it opens centralized start menu (essentially Rofi) and it functions same way regarding wheel scroll or arrow cursors or type-search.

#

Did you get the brightness to go up?

thorny tree
nocturne trench
#

private software repositories

nocturne trench
# thorny tree Yeah

did you have to use software mode video brightening, or backlight brightness sliders?

thorny tree
#

Not sute , when i opened in toolbar it was a small window with just broghtness

nocturne trench
#

if part of it is hiding, hold ALT key down, and drag this grey box up

#

(alt+drag to move)

thorny tree
nocturne trench
#

which slider did you have to use?

thorny tree
nocturne trench
nocturne trench
thorny tree
#

Yeah this one

thorny tree
#

@nocturne trench hi , i always was thinking about this question
Why people use precisely cinnamon ot kde , is it just bcs they like the style , or if they go to xfce they are afraid they sacrifice something like compatibility or drivers or specefic functions they cant use it on xfce ? And what function for example ?

nocturne trench
#

ppl just typically use what's the common or popular desktop

#

the flagship

#

since Mint's flagship is Cinnamon, ppl will just not second-guess anything and go with that

#

Manjaro's flagship DE is xfce or maybe now kde

#

MX linux flagship is xfce. ppl just go with first simple choice

#

Kubuntu and Tuxedo OS - flagship DE is KDE Plasma

#

if concerned about resources, agility, then people with brains will go with lighter desktop environments

#

that's it.

thorny tree
#

So they go with flagships bcs its more maintained somehow , like mint first thing we think about is cinnamon , so we think more features there ,
But what about functions , is going for example to lighter de's is going to make compromise in the ability to run some programs or compatibility and better drivers from desktop to another ? Or all desktops are the same in that side and the difference is just the style ?

nocturne trench
#

you asked me this long ago

#

the answer is no. you wont miss anything serious.

#

only difference is the evolution of the modern day graphics platforms in linux> X or Wayland.

thorny tree
#

@nocturne trenchhi , how are u

#

do u have an idea on a program to know the health of my external hard drives and they are gonna last for how long ?

nocturne trench
#

Hi. You can check with the Disks app in Linux Mint.

#

Open it up, then check in the dots menu for SMART data and tests.

#

idk if it will pass through USB though.

thorny tree
#

Yeah it didnt pass. And some hardrives shows me unknown model๐Ÿคฃ

nocturne trench
thorny tree
#

@nocturne trench hi , i have this problem with my hdd , i didnt use it for sometime and i set it up to ext4 to use it in linux but cant copy and paste files on it

#

One shared a way around shrood or something but lol i was so confused

nocturne trench
#

this data drive you made to ext4 (probably with root administrative power) is now owned by root.

#

use the DISKS app > partition menu (gear icon) to take ownership of that specific EXT4 partition

#

@thorny tree

thorny tree
nocturne trench
#

that's possibly a different issue

#

is it usb-connected, or internal?

if has subfolders click the 'enable recursive mode' tickbox, then click OK

thorny tree
#

Yeah empty

nocturne trench
#

i'll show u now how to set it up. click ok first

#

then show pic partition

thorny tree
nocturne trench
#

what name would you like this drive to say, in the file manager?

nocturne trench
thorny tree
nocturne trench
#

click the gear symbol

#

'edit filesystem'

#

put Drive_1

thorny tree
#

Ok , lol i put hdd drive just to remember it , since my other is ssd

nocturne trench
#

or Drive1_1TB

nocturne trench
#

then show it

thorny tree
nocturne trench
#

are you sure ST1000 model is a HDD??

#

nvm, it is.

#

ok click gear icon again

thorny tree
#

Yeah

nocturne trench
#

choose 'edit mount options' and show pic

thorny tree
nocturne trench
#

turn off the defaults toggle, then tick 'show in interface' then:

#

if you going to use this for Steam games, put mountpoint to /mnt/hdd

#

otherwise /media/<you>/hdd

#

then save settings, (authorize)

#

and reboot

thorny tree
#

๐Ÿคฃ but i know to just copy 600gb i am gonna need a whole day maybe

nocturne trench
#

ok see if it works the automount after reboot

#

oh wait

#

are u still there?

#

@thorny tree

thorny tree
#

I just reboot it , now i can past files

#

Thanks

nocturne trench
#

yes but one thing forgot

thorny tree
nocturne trench
#

put nofail, after nosuid,

thorny tree
#

Ok

#

What is its use ?

nocturne trench
#

in case u ever remove that hdd or delete the partition,

#

and forget to UNDO this auto stuff, it will fail boot

#

so add the nofail option

thorny tree
#

Nice thanks

nocturne trench
#

so now it appears in file manager in Devices yes?

#

you still there, @thorny tree ?

thorny tree
#

๐Ÿซก

nocturne trench
#

run df -h now and note the FSAVAIL value for sda1

#

then sudo tune2fs -m 0 /dev/sda1

#

then df -h again to confirm

thorny tree
nocturne trench
#

mhm. you see it, what I'm talking about?

thorny tree
#

The problem the hard drive is empty. But here i see

#

47 gb used

nocturne trench
#

it says 870 GiB available, for sda1 in df

#

see it?

thorny tree
#

Yeah

#

And its 916

nocturne trench
#

then do the rest of the commands

thorny tree
#

Now its 916

#

๐Ÿซก

nocturne trench
#

u sure?

thorny tree
nocturne trench
#

yes it would be, cuz set to 0

thorny tree
#

But why at first it used 47 gb ?

nocturne trench
#

so because this is data drive, it's fine to set it to zero

nocturne trench
#

1000 GB metric = 931 GiB , after format to ext4 (due to formatting overhead) that size will change to 916 GiB

#

without tune, stays at 870 GiB

thorny tree
nocturne trench
#

so this is mx xfce ?

thorny tree
nocturne trench
#

oh you really hopping

#

was going to say, if the terminal here is too transparent, you can adjust/darken it

#

I think xfce terminal now also supports a background image

thorny tree
#

Ohh nice to hear

nocturne trench
thorny tree
#

And for a reason i couldnt find a solution on kde distros , my cpu usage in so high

#

Tried many distros and all same thing

nocturne trench
#

yep

thorny tree
#

Just one video yt on 1080p and cpu is between 60 and 75 % , aometimes it goes down to 50

nocturne trench
#

well don't expect miracles. this is not an i7 processor

#

not even close.

thorny tree
#

๐Ÿคฃ lol mpt close even to i5 , why i7 ๐Ÿ˜…

#

O am thonking of buying a new computer , for working , so i am looking for minimum stuff to buy

nocturne trench
#

yep. i'd get an older i7

#

since affordable

#

or brand new, idk. you'd have to research the core ultra series

thorny tree
#

Maybe 16gb ram , and at least 512 gb ssd , and not sure about cpu , maybe i5 with something in the 10 gen or more , ofc if i am lucky amd i can find something in my budget maybe i7 , not sure ๐Ÿค”

#

At last i think this is the minimum to look for ?

nocturne trench
#

yes i7

#

since things online get heavier every year

thorny tree
#

So better i7 with smaller generation than i5 with recent gen 11 and more ?

nocturne trench
#

im not the expert, but I think so

thorny tree
# nocturne trench

Btw u said u use fluxbox since u dont have the good hardware , why not using antix ? Or its too limited with no gnome stuff and all ?

nocturne trench
#

no web browser would play pluto tv

#

i tried so much.

#

so I had to boot to different OS everytime to watch Pluto

#

so then I just installed MX Fluxbox and it all worked.

#

Picture above is MX Xfce, that I styled.

thorny tree
nocturne trench
#

idk if it's global

#

does it work for you?

thorny tree
#

Btw i had the same problem like last time , with my external hard drive that was exfat from the start. It had some files in it , and when i tried to paste some file in win 10 i couldnt and it says file not found ๐Ÿ˜ญ , especially i work on linux for personal dqily stuff but for work in windows since i need windows to share with others in work

thorny tree
nocturne trench
#

double check the format

nocturne trench
#

then open gnome-disks

#

and choose it. then show it

thorny tree
#

I dont have the computer of linux now ๐Ÿ˜… i ll test with live. Is it gonna work ?

nocturne trench
#

boot live linux

#

choose a distro like Mint

#

which has the gnome disks app already

thorny tree
#

Yeah just a sec

#

Btw that file shows it has 0 octet ๐Ÿ˜…

nocturne trench
#

maybe it's not the filesystem you think it is

thorny tree
nocturne trench
thorny tree
#

I do it

nocturne trench
#

is this seagate internal, or by usb?

thorny tree
#

Yeah seagate external hard drive

nocturne trench
#

i think u have to click the stop button to unmount partition first

#

then 'check filesystem'

#

and give it 15 minutes (or less)

thorny tree
#

Unmount isnt gonna delete my data ?
