#Need help, D.E. gone Timeshift not working

As said, suddenly my cinnamenu stopped working, after I restarted using sudo reboot, I was greeted by this (image).
I tried using my Timeshift to roll back, but every snapshot (even back when everything was good) send me back to said same screen.

In addition (for the past week) when I did neofetch it fastfetch I’d get greeted by ā€žUbuntuā€œ ā€žUbuntu cinnamonā€œ to be specific.
Eventhough I was on a normal Linux mint (never hopped, the iso is verified)

This kinda stops my workflow, if could continue on pen and paper. But that kindof sucks.
Don’t really want to do a TOTAL fresh install.
I wonder why my system switches to ā€žUbuntuā€œ (I get its a fork, but it can’t be that open about it)
(And other than the fact that my Firefox and librewolf keep crashing I had no other problems on my pc)
(Another interesting information is that on my Timeshift snapshot log, it says that my snapshots are mixed Ubuntu and Linux mint) (aka some mint some Ubuntu)

Hope somebody can help, not sure what the issue is.

#

From live session
My timeshift
Out of nowhere my mint decides to switch sides
Turning into Ubuntu
(I’ll try going back to the 3rd snapshot aka rolling back quite far)
(Edit: didn’t work)

#

do you have a Timeshift I had you make very early on, where I said "include all hidden home objects" in the snapshot

#

cuz that would restore everything but ur personal documents

#

if not, u will have to look up some guide on how to boot live, then change root, "chroot" command. this involves mounting some things in temporary locations, then changing root which is like an alien or spirit jumping into a creatures body. (going from live user into the soul of the install)

#

from there, you can reinstall Cinnamon (need a tutorial for that too so u dont miss any packages)

#

then rebooting out of live mode will leave the soul altered.. for the better (hopefully)

rugged shore
#

Alr I’ll get on that when home

rugged shore
#

I looked up the procedure
Looks to be approx 45 min
I’ll do that tomorrow or in a week…
Unfortunately since finals are in two weeks I’ve been stressing
And I’ll be going on a school related trip form Wednesday -Friday
So I’m not sure how to handle it

For todays studies I’ve booted puppy (thanks for hooking me up it’s a great os)

And it’s working flawlessly

#

Audio, discord, online textbooks, video dual screen, different browser, online email clients, fast internet

rugged shore
#

Guys this is very unexpected
Alr
I’ll explain what I just did….

#

@indigo belfry look at this
After I ended up there like normally and I couldn’t be bothered to boot puppy again I looked up this exact problem and found this website. (https://medium.com/@aterro51/linux-how-to-fix-linux-mint-initramfs-prompt-at-boot-a6bced4fe49f)

there they said ā€žrun exitā€œ I did ran fsck <directory> -y and then ā€žexitā€œ again and I left that screen

Medium

How to fix Linux Mint initramfs Prompt at Boot:

#

Im going to now try to roll ā€žforwardā€œ my system
Since I rolled it back for no reason

#

Now it’s all working….
(Roll foreword my system didn’t really work but that’s alr)
(Everything is working now)

#

its back working now... not sure when or how it breaks again but i think its really time
i cut corners
i bought a hdd a week ago still didnt put it in

indigo belfry
#

ah well good on u for researching the initramfs thing

rugged shore
#

honestly when i first had this issue i didnt even find that website

#

lucky that i did this time

#

lesson learned

indigo belfry
#

yeah . Mint does an auto fsck , as per fstab, but it didnt seem to reach that stage yet

rugged shore
#

Whoops
It all just died….

rugged shore
#

Changed my wallpaper a bit too quickly now I’m here 😭 😭 😭

indigo belfry
#

press ctrl-alt-backspace to quickly log out

rugged shore
#

Nothing is working…

indigo belfry
#

hopefully it's a minor glitch

rugged shore
#

Not even the cntrl alr f2

indigo belfry
#

any cursor or underscore?

rugged shore
#

Backspace ctrl alt neither

indigo belfry
#

nvm i see it

rugged shore
indigo belfry
#

just force reboot . may just be the odd glitch

rugged shore
#

Crazy stuff

indigo belfry
#

happens to me but is extremely rare!

rugged shore
#

Whyyyyyyyyyyyyy

#

Got it 😭 😭 😭

indigo belfry
#

try the exit thing

rugged shore
#

Yes on it

indigo belfry
#

maybe the ssd is being flaky

#

not unheard of.

rugged shore
#

Just as normal

#

Exited again
Everything is starting

#

Now I’m here again
In the normal login…

#

Everything works
Discord
Browser

indigo belfry
#

i'd get the smart data

#

if u cant, something's weird

rugged shore
#

Nop doesn’t let me still…

#

Weird indeed

Recently I reconfigured my ram speed
Thinking maybe it’ll change smth
(But yeah didn’t change anything)

indigo belfry
#

yes

#

messing with RAM speed is risky n can lead to instability in some cases

rugged shore
#

Now it’s working again,,..

#

Not sure wtfs wrong honestly

#

I’ll keep going like this
If my shit dies I’ll restart it

I’ll worry about you hardware
Look into what’s unhappy

#

Pretty sure it’s sooooome random bios setting messing with me

#

Whaaaaa?

#

Now I’m here…..

#

What in Tarantion

#

Whatever I’ll just leave it in this screen il go eat

rugged shore
#

Cursed device
I’ll just manually restart

#

Had to do the exit thing again

It seems my system is dying whenever it’s trying to create a snapshot

indigo belfry
rugged shore
rugged shore
#

Honestly
Yeah

indigo belfry
#

what's that? the prompt

#

too fuzzy/distant

rugged shore
indigo belfry
#

u shutting down

rugged shore
#

But all the letters are squares

indigo belfry
#

or did it magicallh appear

rugged shore
#

Makes it open that menu

indigo belfry
#

If I recall from VERY early on, you were not able to see SMART data from DISKS app

#

which was a red flag

rugged shore
#

When I try to open an icon
It shows a weird ā€žclockā€œ symbol
Instead of the usual color spinning cursor animation
And the cinnamenu is not working

rugged shore
#

Maybe I should look into my drive settings on the bios

Maybe it really is smth wrong with that

Honestly

I’ve been wasting my time all day

I reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaalllllly need to start hitting the books

I have the most important exams of my life coming up in 9 days and I’m not ready

indigo belfry
#

yeah well study then šŸ˜›

#

at the very very least, my reco. is power down fully, remove, polish the contacts gently, and fully and properly reseat the nvme if that's what u got for storage.

rugged shore
#

Ts is getting me mad before I even open my text books
I’ll open puppy Linux again

So annoying

rugged shore
#

I installed 2 harddrives

1 old one with the case saying 600gb but it actually only having 60 XD

And one new one that I bought of Amazon for 20€/~20$

It’s funny

#

Because their I CAN see smart data
While on my main I can’t see it at all

#

I haven’t changed anything in my bios yet maybe I should get on that

rugged shore
#

20 min
And all of my stuff crashed
Menu doesn’t work
Internet doesn’t work
Discord just vanished

20 minutes is allll it took

#

Can’t even open terminal

#

And it’s showing this funny loading symbol

#

Hit restart and now it’s sloooowly printing these strange messages

#

Hit ctrl alr backspace
Still posting these weird messages

#

But from blackscreen

viral fox
#

First thing, turn the ram speed to what it was before.

#

Then disable the firewall for a bit. systemctl stop ufw, systemctl disable ufw.

#

Make sure you have secure boot off in your BIOS first.

rugged shore
#

Secure boot is off
The ram seemed like it wasn’t the problem sure I could do that
But it seemed like the ram settings change wasn’t the issue

I just installed the smartmontools to check smart data

I’ll disable firewall first

viral fox
#

Who is 192.168.2.47 and who is 192.168.0.40?

rugged shore
#

Seems like an ip

#

Mine most likely…

#

Not sure

#

Idk

viral fox
#

ip address should show you.

rugged shore
viral fox
#

Also seem that apparmor removed something on cupsd. Is there a printer in your area?

rugged shore
viral fox
#

Try to stop apparmor. systemctl stop apparmor.

rugged shore
#

Did that…
Was there supposed to be a change…

viral fox
#

Reboot the PC and try without printer.

#

Keep the printer out for now.

rugged shore
#

Im fairly sure the printer is an issue
I mean how could it cause my drive to keep somehow corrupting and my system crashing

#

But I’ll go disable it

#

Nvm no printers

viral fox
#

Stop apparmor for now, and let's see if it crashes again.

rugged shore
#

Like so?

viral fox
#

Yes. Keep it out for now. Maybe it wont crash.

rugged shore
#

Watching yt
My mouse cursor vanished
Nothing is moving
Can’t interact with the video

#

Everything is frozen
My pc fans are spinning fast

Not interactable

#

@viral fox Not the first time this happens

I was trying to study
And my workbooks are online

The past week I have been simply booting into ā€žpuppy Linuxā€œ if you know it
Running it through ram

And working like so
Since all I need is a browser

#

Though YouTube videos occasionally freeze
I’m sure that’s because of the browser acting up

#

Running through ram represents 0 problems

viral fox
#

Then it seems the hard drive is the problem. Boot from live usb, and then make a fsck.

rugged shore
#

Although my bios tells me through the quick tests there
That everything is cool with my nvme ssd

It’s not really acting like it is

Whenever I reboot my system
It sends me to a screen like this
Where I type in
Exit
Then fsck [drive] -y
Exit

Then everything is back to normal

Uuntilllllll it crashes again 20 min later

rugged shore
#

(I mean making a fsck)

#

(Hold on hold on hold onnnnnnnnnn

I just rebooted

And it’s normal

It’s not in that weird intramfs screen )

viral fox
#

You do fsck [drive] -y from the initramfs with the partition mounted which does not work very well, so it may fail.

#

Do it from live medium without partition mounted.

rugged shore
#

(Pic from not today)

viral fox
#

Try doing it from live usb.

rugged shore
#

Alr

#

Of Linux mint?

#

Live usb?

viral fox
#

Yes.

rugged shore
#

Nothing is really happing…

rugged shore
#

Dk what to do

I’ll go back to puppy
I seriously need to get studying

#

Im not gonna lie…
The system is kindof failing me bad
I do not want to say this awful phrase, but at least windows was working…

viral fox
# rugged shore

Is'nt your partition /dev/nvme0n1p2? Open gparted to see what partition you should use fsck on.

viral fox
rugged shore
#

Yeah….

rugged shore
#

My system started working again………

#

I have no clue why

#

But it’s good
Firefox crashes occasionally

#

Im not gonna switch back to my librewolf
Too much breakage
Now im using betterfox Firefox
Studying
Doing my stuff

All I did was add 2 more harddrives

And it’s working…

#

I will not be updating my system for the next 5 weeks most likely then I’ll see

indigo belfry
#

you could try installing onto one of the hard drives, with the nvme removed during that stage. I bet it will work flawlessly and rock solid

rugged shore
#

It most likely will…
I think I’ll actually get rid of my nvme after the exams

rugged shore
# indigo belfry how's it going, friend?

crashes happend occsaionally, exit > fsck /dev/nvme0n1p2 exit reversed it
currently a bit sleep deprived, ive filled a college block with practice problems
havent comitted to switching drives yet

#

still studying first of 5 exams comming up this friday

indigo belfry
#

ah skool busy indeed
