Can I install Linux on my internal ssd (512GB), and set my external drive as storage(2TB), for all games/music/pictures etc.

I have Linux on my internal drive right now. But all the things are being stored there as well. Tried switching out directories for installed files to the external ssd.

And now I'm having trouble in lutris and such. With programs not finding files and giving me weird directories I didn't enter at all. 🤷🏼‍♂️

I'm going to do a clean reinstall of Linux Mint right now, to fix it all easily. Don't have anything crazy installed anyway that I'd lose. So I was wondering if there is a way for me to do this, if it's possible at all?

The external ssd is a Samsung T9 (2000mbp/s) empty and formatted to ext4, and I'm doing this on a HP Victus 15 with intel I-5 Core & RTX4050 btw. If that info is of any use.
Thanks in advance!

You can install mint, choose manual partitions, put the root (/) on the internal ssd and create the /home partition on the other ssd.

I would NOT consider moving your actual userhome to the external drive unless you are gonna swear in written blood that you will ALWAYS keep that external drive connected; otherwise major major issues will ensue.

  • you can bookmark your favourite places on the external drive into bookmarks. And also ctrl-shift-drag folders from the external (this creates a symlink) onto your linux mint desktop
