#Bootloop after installation

Hello, I just finished installing Linux Mint. Everything went alright, followed the steps like disabling Secure boot etc. and after the installation I got a prompt to restart the computer or continue testing.

I clicked restart now, and now I'm in a boot loop. Only things I can do is boot into windows. If I try Linux it will show me HP on the screen for 1 second and then restarts.

Any Idea what could be wrong? Do I need to install drivers before Linux Mint will work?

Doing this on a Victus 15 from HP. Has Nvidia GeForce RTX 4050 and intel i5 core, running windows 11 home

Is there any error being promoted while booting?

So, that sounds like the bootloader didn't install properly.

I am assuming at least that you don't get to a screen that says GNU GRUB on it?

dawn quartz
#

What about update-grub

boreal lichen
#

No I have not seen that

deft wolf
#

Then yeah, bootloader didn't install or register properly. Did you install to the same drive as Windows or different?

boreal lichen
#

I have installed grub2win just now. I was using Ventoy before. I'm pretty sure it installed onto the external SSD Wich was running ventoy

deft wolf
#

Ah

dawn quartz
deft wolf
#

I'm not convinced that will do anything

dawn quartz
#

Probably can give a try

boreal lichen
#

I don't think that's possible 🥲

dawn quartz
boreal lichen
#

I read about that and followed everyone telling me to pick GPT

dawn quartz

disklable type:- dos (MBR)
"""”"""""""""""'":- gpt (GPT)

#

Should match both iso and disk

deft wolf
#

OK, so where did you actually install Mint to? Was it the same drive as Windows?

dawn quartz
boreal lichen
deft wolf
#

Yes

#

Is that SSD currently plugged into the system?

boreal lichen
#

Yes

deft wolf
#

And it still doesn't boot with it plugged in?

dawn quartz
#

hehecat issue diagnosed

boreal lichen
#

No it just bootloops, only thing that works is looking up the standard windows boot inside ventoy

naive cave
#

u dont install onto the installer

#

period

deft wolf
#

You need to remake an install disk and probably try again friend

boreal lichen
#

I just wiped ventoy from the disk. If I partition it, and install ventoy on a small partition. Can I install mint on the other partion afterwards?

deft wolf
#

I doubt it, since I was always under the impression Ventoy wanted to use the whole disk

boreal lichen
#

I only have a 2tb external ssd so I have to use the same device for both.

naive cave
#

u need a usb stick. and the external ssd. simple as that

deft wolf
#

There is an Android app I used a month or so ago that can act as a live USB too

boreal lichen
#

Ah really? I read on several forums it was possible with partitions... Gonna have to wait untill tomorrow to get a extra usb then I guess

boreal lichen
deft wolf
deft wolf
#

Ventoy is not a requirement for a live USB

boreal lichen
#

What tool would you reccomend, to make my phone a live USB?

deft wolf
#

The app essentially does "The Same Thing" ™️ as Ventoy

#

Let me see if I can find it again

boreal lichen
#

Alright I'm gonna format my disk and uninstall Ventoy now

dawn quartz
#

GPT requires a EFI partition as well

#

Around 200mb to boot

deft wolf
#

Why are you obsessed about the partition table?

deft wolf
dawn quartz
boreal lichen
#

Ventoy is gone and ssd is formatted now. Time to restart I guess lol

deft wolf
#

Ahhhh wait a sec my bad

#

The app is for writing a USB with phone

dawn quartz
#

Or as the iso is

deft wolf
#

Why would you need to?

#

No machine with OPs specs is running MBR

naive cave
boreal lichen
#

Ah so that won't work either haha

deft wolf
#

It does work, just not for what you need.

naive cave
dawn quartz
#

Let's find a way to make it get into live session

#

Root it

deft wolf
#

Let's not, there's literally no need to.

naive cave
dawn quartz
boreal lichen
deft wolf
#

OP needs to grab a cheap 8-16GB USB stick and that should resolve the issue.

The secondary issue your might then get is whether the installer will actually let you install to the external SSD because "it's external/connected via USB".

naive cave
#

yep wait til stores open

dawn quartz
#

I guess it's all wiped

I'm in windows 11, that still works normally

dawn quartz
deft wolf
boreal lichen
#

Only reason I'm trying to keep windows is because I play games

#

I keep hearing there's not much support for games. Otherwise I'd just replace windows OS with linux

naive cave

dawn quartz
naive cave
#

u can leave it in when preparing ur usb stick with ventoy, that part's fine

boreal lichen
#

Yeah that's what I meant, sorry not English native speaker

dawn quartz
#

Sooo
You have windows 11 right now and it's working
But don't have USB? Is this the issue

boreal lichen
#

Yes I guess so. I read online that just a ssd with partitions should work. But if I need Ventoy (or another program) stored somewhere else then the external ssd Wich will take linux. This is the issue

#

My only options are getting a USB, or installing mint on my internal SSD and getting rid of Windows. (Which I would prefer honestly) But I'm unsure if the games I play are still working on linux. That's why I'm trying to keep windows as well

dawn quartz
#

I guess same had happened to me once, I was trying to install LM without a pendrive

dawn quartz
boreal lichen
#

Am I still able to install and play Xbox gamepass games as well?

dawn quartz
#

Mostly works

dawn quartz
boreal lichen
dawn quartz
#

It's for like running windows application on Linux, wine translates windows system calls to Linux's system calls so Linux can run windows softwares

boreal lichen
#

Ah okay, I'll take a look into it right now. Still gonna have to wait at least 4 hours untill the stores open up anyway haha

dawn quartz
#

Yep! Do you have a card reader?

#

With a memory card

boreal lichen
#

Hmmm I don't think I still have that sadly

#

Only other thing I have is a ancient laptop from Acer haha

dawn quartz
#

Oh no dedcat, I waited for 4 days when this happened to me, like should I ask for my dad to purchase a USB pendrive for me? lol

boreal lichen
#

Ah that sucks 😅 luckily I can get a USB myself, just gotta wait a few hours since it's 5:30 in the morning now. Been working on this since afternoon yesterday🤣

dawn quartz
#

Then I told him that he can store their media files in it hehecat

boreal lichen
#

Or maybe get lucky and my uncle wake up very early today I'm sure he has some spare USBs at home and he lives nearby

#

I sent him a message, maybe he replies before the stores open up haha

dawn quartz
boreal lichen
#

Yeah I like customizability and simple ui's. Windows is just trash. I've been playing playstation my whole life, bought this laptop last week upgraded it a bit and now trying to switch to linux

dawn quartz
#

But etching a ISO file into USB pendrive requires it to format so ask him to save files first!

boreal lichen
#

I told him what I need it for, he will know it should be empty haha

#

Thanks for the heads up though! 🙂

dawn quartz
boreal lichen
#

Yeah no past experience. And I'm trying to get into mint since I see that recommended the most for beginners

dawn quartz
boreal lichen
#

I watch people like mutahar on youtube he taught me a little bit. Now I wanted to try it myself lol

dawn quartz
boreal lichen
#

The Ubuntu one

dawn quartz
boreal lichen
#

Understandable, now it's just hoping for all the developers for games and programs to love linux just as much 😆

#

But for now I'll be heading out, see if I can get a USB drive somewhere. When I do get one and retry all of this. I'll send a message in here 😁👍🏼

#

Hopefully within like 4-5 hours

Just went through the installation again and replaced windows fully using the ssd for just the ISO flashing. Everything works and I'm inside linux now 🙂

#

I'll just see what I can figure out game wise, if it's just 1 or 2 of my most played games not working I'll stay with it. Otherwise I'll get a USB and dualboot windows from there

Try wine
