sudo reboot?
seems the policy kit is behaving weird to launch any admin-necessary apps
just reboot however u usually do. gui or terminal
Which is better?
gui
Why is it better to click the Restart button than to execute sudo reboot?
less chance of typo. easier, IMO
Ok
I went into software sources because I chose local mirroring to get updates faster.
Do you prefer local mirroring likewise?
Yes, but it seems that I will need to input my password every time I launch it. 😵💫
Wrong image man!
k
just type syn
It's already there.
I already did! 😀
then click status on left
then click installed upgradable
then u can see stuff u may but dont necessarily need to upgrade
from the "installed" category, u may find and remove Firefox
if haven't already.
Google Chrome or Discord is not available in Synaptic, because these are proprietary, so need to be installed from website official deb package file
https://youtu.be/qxnM0rvVbDc?t=304 (5:04) how to use Synaptic, thorough and simple. See this video from timestamp for a good overview.
you can also search up n install kfind (I recommend, as you saw from last time it is a good tool to find files)
I will apply this.
I'm assuming that you believe that synaptic is the most efficient way to uninstall software?
it's pretty darn good. you can select multiple packages by marking them, then apply all at once.
what is important is to read and understand what it is going to do at the end, as u did in picture above, by opening the side arrow
and watching that vid i sent.
Software Manager is best to browse new software u dont know about.
Synaptic is best for deep, or nitty-gritty stuff that may not show up in Software Manager, or for system maintenance, removal, complete removal, upgrade, etc.
this is also good to browse and install/remove Flatpak software. that comes in large containers, software made universally for all linux distros, and not available in the Mint/Ubuntu repos - example would be: Discord (flatpak, not the deb) or Kasts (a universal podcast player/finder)
I would imagine the same applies to ProtonVPN.
mhm
Proton VPN is a troublemaker
it seems to pull-in the Gnome desktop environment, and switch the login manager from lightdm to GDM
i've seen many ppl using Mint Cinnamon get messed up with that
that's why u look very very carefully at terminal summary before ever pressing Yes to the install summary. Same for Synaptic, like in that last picture u showed.
I'm following this:
https://protonvpn.com/support/official-linux-vpn-ubuntu
dpkg: error: dpkg frontend lock was locked by another process with pid 5733 Note: removing the lock file is always wrong, can damage the locked area and the entire system. See <https://wiki.debian.org/Teams/Dpkg/FAQ#db-lock>.
if Proton VPN is available as a Flatpak, then use that. And use Flatseal to grant certain flatpaks certain permissions if they dont work good by default.
locked means other software managers are open.
use the flatpak if possible.
g2g now. have a nice day. mark this solved.
I'll have to search for it.
Didn't you mark it as solved already?
no. you should add the tags "Mint" "Cinnamon" "storage" and "solved"
I just did in any case.
I don't see those tags.
make new ticket for new subjects.
This ticked is SOLVED (Solution: wiping the drive using gparted, making a new GUID partition table. Then fresh-installing Mint 22.1)
How can I add these tags to this post?
Should I remove the content on my USB?
@flat terrace did you manage a full recover?
