#Core dumped from librewolf (browser)

Greetings, yesterday librewolf ran without issues. I installed how the official librewolf page wanted it to be done on Debian based systems (should I have done the unofficial Ubuntu one?).
Anyway when I open librewolf aka click on the icon there is a short loading sequence on the cursor, then nothing happens.
From the terminal when I say „librewolf“ it outputs the message „Segmentation fault (core dumped)“.

I’ll reinstall it today later

However strange that it did that from one day to another.
Maybe I should use flatlak for the next time…

sage bloom
#

And my Firefox browser also keeps crashing…
Very strange
Sick and tired of all of the „gah your tab just crashed“ followed by this

edgy ledge
#

perhaps you should test your computer's memory. The live USB has that option right at its boot menu

#

also found it strange you couldnt read your drive's SMART data.

#

is the drive connected thru a USB adapter? or directly to a SATA or M.2 NVME port?

sage bloom
#

That is tragic
Just ran the test….

#

Tragicđź’”

#

Did 5 tests till now all failed

#

Not smth I really wanna see…..

#

23k errors atm… test 6

#

It can’t be that broken
It all ran win 10 without issues for 4 years

edgy ledge
#

did u mess with over-voltaging something?

sage bloom
#

Never heard of that…

edgy ledge
#

I suggest trying to remove and reseat the RAM modules firmly. put them according to the manufacturer's recommendation for memory slot order for pairs of modules.

#

or if they were NEVER moved, ever, just reseat them in the current slots they were in.

sage bloom
#

Ight
Put the ram sticks into different slots it is

edgy ledge
sage bloom
edgy ledge
# sage bloom M.2

have you reseated the RAM? make sure both ends fit in level, and the tabs click in

sage bloom
#

If it’s messed up I’ll redo the bios settings
I only really changed the secure boot option

edgy ledge
#

now u have to review ur bios settings if u pulled the battery

#

make sure the storage (nvme) is set to AHCI and not RAID or RST or VMD

sage bloom
#

Yes yes…
I’m sure I never really tweaked anything there anyway

sage bloom
#

Redid my thing
The nvme configurations didn’t really work for some reason but the sata ones did…

#

(And the other thing seems interesting but just a hunch might be good to know for later)

edgy ledge
sage bloom
#

Alr

#

Should I boot normally into my normal mint install or the live version first

edgy ledge
#

i would boot live n run the memtest again

sage bloom
#

Alr

#

Damnit…
Too easy….

edgy ledge
#

just let it run its course

sage bloom
#

Status of the test
Less erors than before
But still big fat fail

#

28k errors down to 21.9k errors

#

(Insane)

#

It’s always like one digit difference..
on every test it fails because the second digit is different

marsh heart
#

@sage bloom I mean you can try reseating your RAM sticks and see if they goes away

#

If not, you have defective hardware

sage bloom
#

But sure I’ll remount my ram…

edgy ledge
#

recent power surge maybe?

sage bloom
#

How can that be…
Also just started my Linux mint to maybe try memtest86+ or smth like that

Before I could do anything I saw this

#

LOL restored my software sources to default and found this

XD

edgy ledge
#

cursed machine

sage bloom
#

Maybe I should question my abilities as a human
I mean am I the reason everything’s broken, or am I experiencing extraordinary misfortune

edgy ledge
#

misfortune

#

the daemon it mentioned may just be the update manager daemon that watches for updates

#

if you see the shield in tray, then right click it

#

and 'quit'

sage bloom
#

What do you mean by shield in tray…

edgy ledge
#

icon

sage bloom
#

Alr…

#

I mean damn… wth

edgy ledge
#

just close the update manager.

#

it may need a restart since u changed the sources back

sage bloom
#

I’ve been running stress tests
Like making my ram run under 4gb of memory on 1-2 worker threads
I only saw how some cpu threads spike to 100% and fall 30 sec later for some reason…

#

(In the back YouTube not opening Eventhough all other pages work)

edgy ledge
#

yeah i think both your nvme and ur memory is fuct

#

slap a Puppy Linux live distro on your ventoy, and try running off that for like 5 hours or so. it runs all from RAM. no internal drive access. see if youtube and typical other web apps n stuff function fine

sage bloom
#

Hope it won’t matter if I download it from the main „rig“

#

I mean
That was fast

#

It’s running
It’s a alive…
Crazy lightweight

#

Took seconds to load to boot and to start and to run

#

Never ever heard of that distro…

edgy ledge
#

the one u photographed

#

nvm

sage bloom
edgy ledge
#

aight ya nvm

sage bloom
#

Howeva…. Not cool

edgy ledge
#

the iso name looked weird to me that's all

#

but i see it's the focal fossa one

sage bloom
edgy ledge
sage bloom
#

There a way to setup sound?

#

Nvm…

edgy ledge
#

for wrench icon

#

pupsetup

sage bloom
#

Keeps on crashing and crashing I can’t even open one tab…

#

Aesthetic

edgy ledge
#

find the regular browser

#

u installed FF from a pet package, i am assuming

sage bloom
#

Yes that’s what I’m opening… the regular browser opens Firefox…

sage bloom
#

Not on purpose for sure though

edgy ledge
#

check the start menu internet category

#

i thought they use palemoon browser

#

or "Light"

sage bloom
#

It seems Firefox is the only one…

edgy ledge
#

if u can install chromium, or regular Firefox (not ESR)

#

But tbh I think the crashes are related to your unreliable or failing RAM

sage bloom
#

Ight

#

Alr Youre gonna find this one funny

#

Open puppy packetmanager
Browser tab

Look for new browser?
Yes

Opens Firefox
Firefox crashes

The cycle continues

edgy ledge
#

did you install it though?

#

dont go to "Browsers" in start menu> Internet (those are cool but use pet packages, and need an permanent install of puppy to work)

#

instead open puppy package manager, click the 'reload' or 'refresh' or whatever it needs as an initial setup

#

then search in its search box for chromium or firefox or librewolf

#

highlight a selection, then click "Do It!" to install

#

@sage bloom

sage bloom
#

It’s strange I’m here
But I can’t find the reload or refresh at all…

edgy ledge
#

click package manager legacy

#

blackbox icon with +

sage bloom
#

Yes…

edgy ledge
#

close those other things

sage bloom
edgy ledge
#

did you click the blue 'refresh' icon first?

sage bloom
#

Its update package database

#

Not yet…

edgy ledge
#

it walks thru acknowledging all the repos

#

just hit enter for all of them

sage bloom
#

Alr

#

Im lost…

edgy ledge
#

y

sage bloom
#

I don’t get what to click enter on
I sadly don’t fully understand where to get a better browser from…

edgy ledge
#

did it refresh yes or no?

sage bloom
#

Nop…

edgy ledge
#

well... do it

#

takes 20 seconds

#

if even

sage bloom
#

I updated the databases but I don’t see the next step…

edgy ledge
#

it completed the databases refresh???

sage bloom
#

Yes…

edgy ledge
sage bloom
edgy ledge
#

close it an reopen it

sage bloom
#

Alr it works

edgy ledge
#

install the inxi package too

sage bloom
#

It’s strange

#

Should I install sudo apt in terminal?

edgy ledge
#

no

#

is hard drive light showing activity?

#

this is likely related to memory fail and shared video memory

edgy ledge
sage bloom
#

How do I check that…

edgy ledge
#

dont u have a light?

#

oh nvm

sage bloom
#

I don’t understand…

edgy ledge
#

this is live

#

it should be done by now

#

did you select inxi package?

sage bloom
#

No… didn’t understand how to do that either sorry

edgy ledge
#

is the package manager done?

sage bloom
#

Yes…

edgy ledge
#

ok does it look bad still?

sage bloom
#

Im not sure I if I understand…

edgy ledge
sage bloom
#

Yes yes fixed

edgy ledge
#

it's normal now?

sage bloom
#

Yes sir
Though not sure how to find packages

edgy ledge
#

go to the search field, and type inxi

#

then it should show in the list

#

select it in list.

sage bloom
#

Yes

edgy ledge
#

click the do it button

sage bloom
#

Success

edgy ledge
#

close any other window EXCEPT pkg mgr

sage bloom
#

Closed

edgy ledge
#

now open terminal, and do inxi -Fxxxz

#

and then show pics in closeup, in landscape, one page at time of results, starting from top of results

sage bloom
edgy ledge
#

do free -h n show

sage bloom
edgy ledge
#

close that

sage bloom
#

Alr

edgy ledge
#

search librewolf or firefox in pkg manager

#

and install n test

sage bloom
#

Librewolf isn’t there but Firefox is I’ll install that

edgy ledge
#

good luck

sage bloom
#

Success
And opened Firefox

#

Nr 2
Opening a song

#

Sound and video works…

edgy ledge
#

and check "about Firefox"

#

what version n name is it?

sage bloom
#

135.0 64 Bit

edgy ledge
#

ok. use that for bunch of hours.

sage bloom
#

Canonical 1.0

sage bloom
edgy ledge
#

check on your free -h from time to time as well to see how much memory is used, if any swap is in use, etc. just to have an idea.

edgy ledge
#

and uname -a

sage bloom
edgy ledge
#

there you go.

#

alright. well just see how it goes. this is just for testing.

sage bloom
#

Maybe ill do my emails from the browser…

edgy ledge
#

do all the stuff you normally do, at least on the web. idk too much about other packages

#

and set a custom THEME in the FIREFOX 135 settings

#

so u dont confuse it in case the FF ESR one opens

sage bloom
#

Im thinking

New drive
New ram
New motherboard
Not sure if I should buy as soon as possible

Honestly I really shouldn’t have switched to Linux one month before my finals which count approximately twice as much as my last 2 years in school

edgy ledge
#

keep in mind this Puppy linux live session CAN and DOES offer to save the live changes when you request to shut down. The default options create a save folder to hard drive.

#

the only caveat is, when booting puppy from ventoy, it doesnt show the options to boot from the save folder. but you can indeed make a 2nd (very small) usb stick with balena etcher, and the puppy ISO, then it will work to load the save folder. (you just have to select "boot puppy linux - Filesystem Check" in its pup boot menu.

#

(or put iso on compact disc as a bootable disc if u have a burner and cd drive on this one)

edgy ledge
#

how's everything so far, @sage bloom ?

sage bloom
#

Good…

#

Everything’s going nice
I’m considering doing some sort of good burn in test…

edgy ledge
#

whatever you do on Puppy though, DO NOT download and install pavucontrol or pulseaudio volume control.

sage bloom
#

…. Alr
Like discord voice call now?

edgy ledge
#

if pulseaudio gets on the system in any way, it will break web browser audio

#

and i believe it's virtually impossible to fix, (u'd have to boot live n start a whole new pupsave session from scratch)

#

is this a laptop or desktop?

sage bloom
#

Desktop

edgy ledge
#

k

sage bloom
#

I’ve been texting from my tablet

edgy ledge
#

oh right u opened it fairly easily it seems

sage bloom
edgy ledge
#

I kinda figured desktop but was just checking

sage bloom
#

Custom rig that worked like a charm for several years

6 months ago I did a burn in test on my pc

It was all perfect condition

#

Back with windows 10

edgy ledge
#

what kind of test?

sage bloom
#

CPU gpu ram memory motherboard

edgy ledge
#

the one that explaining computers guy does with the factoring prime numbers script?

sage bloom
#

All of that even ssd ofc

edgy ledge
#

notwithstanding, things can and do break or fail

#

just check forums about samsung evo's

sage bloom
sage bloom
edgy ledge
#

it doesnt happen often to many but i've seen the odd person here in this very server who had failed memory too

#

btw most puppy linux dont use apt. they're dependent fully on .pet packages (which are sort of like Ubuntu snap packages, before snap was a thing) or from the slackware or ubuntu base via the legacy pup pkg manager

sage bloom
#

Lowkey really dope distro

edgy ledge
#

however, dpup does work with apt on CLI apparently

#

(ive not tested)

#

u can try to see if u can read smart data

#

there's some terminal command that may work

#

idk if it depends on systemd tho

#

which Im quite sure puppy linux doesnt use to boot and run services

#

but something like smartctl i think

#

can also look for gnome-disk-utility from the pkg mgr and see if it agrees to be good and install for u

#

then u can check again from gnome disks' dots menu if u can do the nvme SMART data viewing

sage bloom
edgy ledge
#

yeah there' no apt

#

screw gpt

sage bloom
#

Mhm

edgy ledge
#

use google

sage bloom
#

Now let’s see

edgy ledge
#

"linux command to view SMART data"

edgy ledge
#

was older pup

sage bloom
#

Never ever has smth worked like that on this pc with Linux on there

edgy ledge
#

see if launchs

#

check in start menu: utility maybe

sage bloom
#

Can’t find that…

edgy ledge
#

im sure its somewhere

sage bloom
#

Mhm

edgy ledge
#

but u can also launch it from terminal as gnome-disks

sage bloom
#

I found disks

#

Not sure if it’s the one tho

edgy ledge
#

pick the nvme

#

go to dots menu

sage bloom
#

Nooo

#

It’s not letting me see the smart data

edgy ledge
#

not end of world

sage bloom
#

I should probably most definetly run memtest overnight
Later
Checking my ram or ssd

edgy ledge
#

what memtest?

sage bloom
#

Like memtest86+ that one can run overnight to get good diagnostics of one’s memory

#

Tool I heard about I’ll read up on it tho not too sure about it

edgy ledge
#

oh i see benchmark drive there

#

though i think it is a fairly short test

sage bloom
#

Good idea I’ll try clicking that

edgy ledge
#

idk if it needs to be mounted first

#

gl

sage bloom
#

Short indeed

#

But seems nice ig

edgy ledge
#

the sample size was only 10 MiB

#

idk if u can set multiple passes and much bigger sample size

sage bloom
#

Yes ofc

edgy ledge
#

try like 4 sample (or5) and sample size like 400 MB

sage bloom
#

Yeah I mean same results…

edgy ledge
#

koo, koo

#

i was gonna say, if u wanna go on discord, on the actual pc

#

just over firefox

#

u can test screenshare, mic, etc

sage bloom
#

Sure

edgy ledge
#

i just need a minute or two, but open retrovol

#

u can tick on "loopback" to test ur own mic

sage bloom
#

Retrovol..where do I find that

#

Pkt mgr?

edgy ledge
#

'open mixer'

#

find it, tested? @sage bloom

sage bloom
#

Yup found it
It works
But my discord is loading…

edgy ledge
#

just use firefox

#

oh ok

sage bloom
edgy ledge
#

give it some time

#

this is live environment and never used before. it may ask u to go to your email to get verification code

sage bloom
#

Occasionally it opens
Then goes back into loading so weird

edgy ledge
#

i think u have to allow speech dispatcher for alerts

sage bloom
#

Thats 2fa secure

sage bloom
edgy ledge
#

that thing it's showing u in firefox right now

sage bloom
edgy ledge
#

what does that translate to?

sage bloom
#

Yes that thing is gone…
You can’t use audio output because the library is missing a speech dispatcher

edgy ledge
#

hm

#

what's the bold words at end mean?

#

and are you logged in finally?

sage bloom
#

Get a speech dispatcher

#

And it only tells you for Debian / Ubuntu

#

Thank you Firefox

edgy ledge
#

just try to screenshare

#

come to the audio channel called speech below general chat

sage bloom
#

Not sure I’ll get the discord running…. I’ll join on my tablet if that’s fine

Dw the quality isn’t awful

sage bloom
#

@edgy ledge
The system works...

#

magical...
everything is great nothing seems corrupted my applications work and the system is fast...

#

thanks so much seriously
