#Help to install antix this time
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
Its selectable
The drop-down menus should allow you to assign mount points. You will need root, which is / usually.
Ok
The other options are not needed, usually. And let's hope it is clever enough to install its Grub alongside the Windows loader.
Grub is there
just put /, where Mint was
Cause linux mint was installed befoee
Ok, so should I select the swap option or not?
yes ofc
There is checkbox
for what
Idk
read the hearder
Should I leave it?
Okay so tickbox is for encryption and I don't want it
then dont touch it
Wait for it to finish.
Its finished now
esp was greyed out, so this must be a legacy BIOS system
Should I hit next or do something else?
also btw the Antix Grub menu is ugly as hell, but that can be changed n made better
I can do it, I did it with mint as well
idk are u sure it says it's finished installing?
It says "paused for required operator input"
so put in ur user details n stuff.
No
DONT enable root account or root password
hit next for the grub on MBR
And create a swap file? Should I leave it untouched
Its not grey out, I can tick it
don't.
Then we are okay
Enable hibernation support?
up to you
What's hibernation anyways
it's like shutdown but with saved state. writes to disk
a bit. sleep keeps memory (RAM) alive in low-voltage mode
Ok I'm enabling it
Hibernate is useful if u park ur laptop, with no power cord for many, many hours
Hibernation writes memory content to the swapspace, so it needs more swap usually. It is technically a deeper sleep state than Sleep.
call it something fun
Ok
Its fake email
I removed @
It will still try to log into that domain, and fail.
Okay
since Linux (unix) was meant for a big environment, like researcher building, many people could be part of same network domain in that building.. example Bio_research.com
so like if 10 others were using their own linux computers all on the same LAN, they could access their own bio research domain
The list goes on, mouse over the arrow at the bottom.
Is it like related to language or something?
timezone
Can't find my timezone
then pick another country in same timezone
Usually your country's capital is in there.
I'm asking for locale option
I guess locale is for english
Languages etc.
Locale governs the language and input method of the keyboard. You need the one that matches your keys.
Cause I changed configure clock
Its english US
Since US English is default, you can probably just skip ahead.
keep on local time
that way dualbooting between windows and linux doesn't fook you
So I tick that?
system clock equals local time, yes
Btw my CMOS battery is dead and I cannot open my laptop
I tried by not able to find appropriate screw driver
It would be fine if it automatically sync time with internet
That means you cannot keep BIOS settings, and the time will reset every boot. Should not be too bad if it boots. Time will be set from NTP, via the Internet. But in that case you do NOT want it on local time.
So should I left that box unchecked?
You can always change things later.
Ok but what should I do rn?
Continue following the installation?
Left it unchecked or not? That's my question
System clock uses local time
@latent reef
I would leave it unchecked, yes.
Its done I guess
Antix doesnt automatically reset the time per internet on each reboot. you have to literally launch the time wizard everytime n tell it to sync from internet if the time gets changed.
Oh
at least u can put the time wizard as an icon on the destkop
but u have to always enter sudo password to run it
i told u man, system time equals localtime.
u should have checked that option.
is this on HDD or SSD?
Hdd
bleh. give ful minute
Its done
Stunner, if the CMOS battery is shot, this setting has not much value to Windows, either.
true. however, if the system is a laptop with good main battery, it should retain the time
same if it's a desktop, and left plugged in. the main power supply always provides a trickle current to the clock circuit
So no way to change it now?
I will defer to your experience with older machines, but feel that NTP should be the sane default anyway.
nope. plus u had to have chosen a TIME ZONE that's in ur area
i dont give a f if u dont see ur city. pick a country or zone very close
anyway does it boot?
Its done now
Yea I selected the country
does it boot ??
good. explore the Control Center from the start menu
u can add favourites to the "personal menu"
I synced the time
Good info
Damn the repos are fast
also get familiar with "App select" in the start menu
so u can quickly type-search any app or setting to start it up
and get familiar with IceWM Settings Manager
it plus Control Center are the two main things.
I've used icewm
it's called zzz
On linux mint
u can just click the file manager in the start menu top
Also I have get light dm instead
but i would also very much recommend installing xfce4-screenshooter it's a lot faster n easier than the included one
erm becareful messing with dm and lightdm. u may break the system
Interesting
I will have to install alot of xfce tools for now
I kinda know that
Thanks
panel launchers are managed by the icewm Toolbar Icon Manager
you can put the toolbar icon manager into the "Personal menu" if u dont want to always see it in the panel
- you may also use the handy Antix Package Installer for easy way to handle package management, OR the included Synaptic. @cursive reef
Synaptic is fine for me
And thanks to @cinder compass and @latent reef
Can't be more grateful
Out of curiosity, what CPU and RAM is this running on?
you can also turn off panels in zzz
i have those top three icons on left that allow 1) disk view 2) bookmarks view 3) folder tree view. only the bookmarks are turned on as u can see
I see
Curunir:
Out of curiosity, what CPU and RAM is this running on?
I'm curious about it too.
Pentium duo core and 2 gb ram
And btw chrome runs smoothest than ever
Firefox sucks, librewolf is fine
yes the Firefox ESR (extended support release) that comes with antix does suck. remove it.
Cheers!
out of curiosity , what's the speed? do inxi -Cx in terminal to find.
Oh btw there is one issue
If I type U,K etc, it turns types as numbers
@cinder compass
I will do it
do u have a real english keyboard?
like true made in America, English keyboard
and is it QWERTY layout or something else?
Yes
Its qwerty
It was fine before idk what happened later on
I will show you keyboard ettings
Okay
4
I think in BIOS, you can set Bootup Numlock status to "OFF" so it wont turn back on next time u boot
And antix is so bloated
it has a lot of little handy things. small tho
Ahh most apps I don't know but looks bloated
I think I will install base now
then do sudo apt clean && sudo apt autoclean && sudo apt autoremove after
Never seen such bloated install
just uninstall stuff u dont want. why mess around with reinstalling?
but anyway do what u like
Okay inwill do this
But even with bloat, it's just 16 gigs like damn
Maybe because it uses sys-V instead of system d
in case system is unstable or a program is misbehaving badly, u can use that shortcut to log out immediately n save yourself.
Same
antix is 6 GB on disk. after installation
Oh I see shotcut to kill
X server
You also use antix right? Full version or base?
I installed librewolf and it's better, default firefox ESR sucks really
I use full. and love it
it only took up like 6.5 GB total on my SSD right after I installed AntiX-full.
I think I will save some disk space
Idk but mine is 16
u made a Timeshift maybe?
No, I will make one
Thanks I know about it
sudo apt install timeshift
no
do lsblk -o NAME,TYPE,MODEL,LABEL,SIZE,FSSIZE,FSTYPE,FSUSED,MOUNTPOINT
exactly as shown
and show the results.
Like one by one?
that one line. exactly as shown.
Wait I will show you later
