Hello, i was wondering about the difference between mint and lmde

Does lmde have different packages? Is it a rolling release or have newer packages? I do remember hearing lmde is a rolling release somewhere but i wasn't sure if it still is so I thought i may ask it here, i already know lmde is debian based unlike normal mint, and does it have other differences? Hope this isn't a dumb question

Hope to hear y'alls replies, thanks

LMDE is based on Debian Stable. Debian never had a rolling release cycle. When we say rolling release cycle, it means continuous delivery. You don't have a schedule of when would the packages hit the repos (which is usual thing for Ubuntu and Debian), and you'd always get the recent stable release. An example of such would be Fedora.

#

So, being based on Debian... LMDE uses the Debian repos, unlike regular Mint that uses Ubuntu's. Usually, Debian packages are some few versions behind, with very few exceptions here and there.

and normal (non-lmde) mint's packages are newer then?

#

not rolling release but you get what i am asking

Yes, that's correct... usually.

Other differences I've noticed with LMDE are the following:

  • No other editions (Cinnamon only)
  • No driver manager (since that was an Ubuntu front-end)
  • No kernel manager front-end either
#

And generally speaking, it's a side project. As the Mint team puts it, it's a way for them to check whether their stuff works outside the Ubuntu instance, which it does.

#

Also a backup just in case Canonical does something unexpectedly weird and terrible to Ubuntu.

yeah i really dislike canonical

#

so i'm glad mint is there as a replacement

#

i never used base ubuntu much but i tend to stay away from it and stick with mint or something else

hey i gotta go to sleep, i'll reply to your messages once i wake up

my apologies for ending this conversation so shortly, i tend to sleep at a decent time
