#How to dual drive dual boot Mint and Windows 10 after installation?

A bit of a baby question because I fumbled that part of my install, but anyways.

I first installed windows 10 on my 1TB drive and I recently installed mint on my old 256 drive but when I boot my computer it jumps straight into Linux with no boot menu in sight. All guides I've seen so far on how to change this are done on the installer but surely there must be a way to do the same thing without me having to completely reinstall my OS, right?

sorry this appeared twice on the forums, lol. I used the wrong one by accident

not stuck on linux, i can select the windows 10 drive from the bios and boot like that

#

but i do want the grub menu to appear on boot to make it more convenient

primal quarry
royal hamlet
#

yes

primal quarry
primal quarry
royal hamlet
#

i dont think it does

#

probably because windows 10 is on the other drive

primal quarry
#

Yup

royal hamlet
#

linux mint does detect the windows 10 drive on file explorer

#

the opposite on windows lol

#

prob bc its linux i think?

royal hamlet
# primal quarry Yup

wouldn't i have to install like a part of grub into windows for mint to detect it?

primal quarry
#

echo "GRUB_DISABLE_OS_PROBER=false" | sudo tee -a /etc/default/grub
sudo update-grub

primal quarry
primal quarry
royal hamlet
#

it still doesnt?

primal quarry
#

Ok

royal hamlet
#

checked the config file and the line is right there

primal quarry
#

sudo mkdir -p /mnt/windows sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/windows

Replace the /dev/sdb1 / with the parties having windows 10 bootmgr

#

🙃

#

sudo fdisk -l to check partitions

fluid rampart
#

if u can see the windows drive as a device in File manager (nemo) then simply click it to ready it. (the technical term is mounting)

fluid rampart
#

once it is mounted, you can do sudo update-grub from mint terminal. This will scan all connected devices and will automatically run os-prober and add to the grub menu

fluid rampart
#

that's too complicated.

#

next type efibootmgr in terminal. what does it respond with?

primal quarry
fluid rampart
#

just do it from DISKS app. way easier

primal quarry
fluid rampart
#

the DISKS app can allow you to mount any partition, (even ones you dont normally SEE in file manager)

fluid rampart
#

ok efibootmgr tells us that your linux mint is in UEFI mode.

#

open DISKS app

#

then click the Windows drive in that. then show it

royal hamlet
#

wait a moment its loading

fluid rampart
#

..

royal hamlet
fluid rampart
#

not that

#

close that.

royal hamlet
#

mb

fluid rampart
#

open the app called Disks

royal hamlet
fluid rampart
#

n show the win drive

#

see the blue writing, it's already mounted in media/user/

primal quarry
#

Cool

fluid rampart
#

the EFI partition of windows disk

royal hamlet
#

correct

fluid rampart
#

so just run sudo update-grub again in terminal

royal hamlet
#

i haven't mounted the thing the other guy wanted tho

fluid rampart
#

doesnt matter. it's already mounted

royal hamlet
#

still doesn't detect windows

fluid rampart
#

ok shutdown

#

go to Windows via BIOS, then tag here

royal hamlet
#

ok

#

I'm loading windows

#

Done

fluid rampart
#

once at desktop, open a run box, put msinfo32

#

in the info window that comes up, look at the line for "BIOS MODE" and tell it

royal hamlet
#

Bios mode is inherited

fluid rampart
#

that in english would be "legacy"

primal quarry
fluid rampart
#

@primal quarry here is why no amount of messing with grub would fix this

royal hamlet
#

why is this still in legacy wtf

primal quarry
#

Fingers cross

fluid rampart
#

u cannot boot windows thru grub

royal hamlet
#

I have uefi bios 💀

fluid rampart
#

unless u reinstall window in UEFI mode, or reinstall linux in legacy mode.

royal hamlet
#

oh my goodness

fluid rampart
#

but the best solution is just to press your 'boot menu key' and forget about grub

fluid rampart
#

NOT the enter bios key

#

the boot menu key

primal quarry
#

Shift?

fluid rampart
#

no

#

every manufacturer has two keys EVERYBODY who dual boots should know.

#

the key for "enter BIOS setup" and the "boot menu" key

royal hamlet
#

Yup

#

i think my bios setup key is del and the boot menu is f12

fluid rampart
#

when u want to use Windows, u just unplug the usb external drive, and it will autoboot into windows

primal quarry
fluid rampart
#

or if u dont want to unplug it, press F2 one or two seconds after powering on

#

it will show a "boot menu" provided by the BIOS , that shows available loaders or devices that can boot the system

#

since your boot mode is currently set to UEFI+Legacy/csm it will show BOTH the old legacy devices, in this case the nvme

#

and the new uefi loaders (in this case will show as 'ubuntu' for Mint)

royal hamlet
fluid rampart
#

so u would just press the option for nvme, and it'll boot windows

royal hamlet
#

This is how it shows to me

fluid rampart
#

ur nvme is probably the top model number Ct1000

royal hamlet
#

For some reason it shows linux drive twice

fluid rampart
#

the reason is cuz like i said, it shows the old way and the new way.

royal hamlet
#

Ok

fluid rampart
#

old way is device names only
new way is <bootmanager name>, device name

royal hamlet
#

Ooh

#

So if i load the one that says ubuntu it would load grub?

fluid rampart
#

yes

#

and ct1000 would load Windows (in legacy mode)

royal hamlet
#

well it didn't load grub (probably because its not necessary) but it did load mint

royal hamlet
fluid rampart
#

no

#

not in this case

#

just unplug external

royal hamlet
#

the linux one

#

makes sense

fluid rampart
#

if u reinstall windows, u have to boot the USB ISO using the pure UEFI boot mode.

#

and it should convert ur drive to GUID partition table (GPT)

#

right now it's Master Boot Record (MBR) this style works with legacy boot

royal hamlet
#

i use ventoy for my flash drive how would i install windows 10/11 with uefi?

fluid rampart
#

add the iso to ventoy, then:

royal hamlet
#

Ooooh

fluid rampart
#

backup any important personal data from Windows to your external drive first.

#

then just have windows redo the entire drive into GPT

royal hamlet
#

alright

#

i'll save this for when i install windows 11 in a few months

#

so basically load the usb on uefi mode

fluid rampart
#

yes

#

also, after full backup of any important data on the CT1000, you can also prepare the SSD in GPT mode ahead of time if u want

#

I dont think u will need to, but just in case windows 11 acts stupid.

primal quarry
#

He's having MBR?

fluid rampart
#
  • u can prepare it from inside LInux Mint using the program called gparted
royal hamlet
fluid rampart
primal quarry
fluid rampart
#

^^ the above will fully erase any files or "roadmaps" of file systems, so only use it after a backup, unless you dont care.

royal hamlet
#

understood

fluid rampart
#

the existing Windows drive would have to be selected in step 1` there.

#

if any lines with keys show up (means mounted) u have to right click and unmount

#

then u can wipe it as per step 2.

#

for now mark this solved. You can boot to either one using the Boot Menu Key at poweron.

royal hamlet
#

lol we're basically back at the beginning

#

thanks a lot anyways

#

ill prob come back to this thread when i install win11

primal quarry
#

What happened in summary?

royal hamlet
#

Windows 10 was installed with MBR while Mint was done with UEFI

#

to "dual boot" between my systems i have to basically do what i've been already doing which is using the bios boot menu

primal quarry
#

Alright

royal hamlet
#

lol

primal quarry
#

Win 11

#

Or 12

fluid rampart
primal quarry
#

Right?

fluid rampart
#

Mint is installed/ UEFI-run

#

Windows is Legacy-run

#

dont focus on the partitioning style.
