I heard Arco Linux has some downloadable configs for Polybar. You can use that as your config file for it, and comment out the widgets you don't want to appear, cuz I heard it includes many.

Does this require extensive knowledge about the terminal?

I don't believe so. just google the terms, and u may get a github or gitlab site, and then just save the config file to the i3 folder hidden in home

commenting out is just a term used in a text editor where you put a # or ; in front of a line so it doesn't run
