Yo, as the title would suggest, I recently tried my hand on linux after getting tired of windows. I bought a new pc just for the purpose of trying it out, and it just so happened to have come pre-installed with mint 20.3. Once i secured an internet connection via usb tethering with my phone, i started downloading whatever updates were available, which included mint 21 Vanessa. After ignoring an error message during the update i rebooted as it instructed me to, and i'm now stuck on a login loop, entirely clueless on what to do now.
There really aren't any files or general information i'd like to keep given that it's a brand new pc with nothing inside.

@vale jay what you need to do is make a recovery USB stick (bootable live medium)
your choice what you want to download, but you'll need a working computer to do it on. linuxmint.com has older ISOs listed in the downloads area, if you wish to stay with 20.3
or just get 22 stable (released this past July)
for bootable usb, you can either use Universal USB Installer (UUI) from pendrivelinux.com or Rufus (both are Windows-only flashers) or ventoy, from ventoy.net
I went with ventoy and followed all the relevant instructions shown on the mentioned sites.
Got mint 22 up and running. Thank you very much.
Would you happen to know somewhere i could watch/read to learn the know-how from here on out?
read all the articles in #1295728709306683482
n check some beginner youtube vids
I always wonder why people do not link to this more:
https://www.linuxmint.com/documentation.php
Scroll down, the user guide is pretty useful.
Linux Mint is an elegant, easy to use, up to date and comfortable desktop operating system.
the "user guide" at that official link is sorely, sorely lacking.. Compare to the older official official guide: #1272611699341660241 message
that said, I think our own #1295728709306683482 does a better job
Alright. I just figured it was the place to start.
than the current doc on the official site
check out the pdf from my first link and see
I believe you without checking. It is just, the User Guide was good once. I suppose it was not updated properly.
Oh boy, I think I might switch to Xfce edition. If the system monitor readings and the random crashes are anything to go by, my poor i5 3rd gen can't handle this OS
Nonsense. I am running KDE Plasma and Cinnamon regularly on 2nd-gen Intels. I am doing that right now.
What could be the issue, then?
Can you discern any pattern in these crashes, or are they really random? And what is wrong with your System Monitor readings?
So far I've tested performance with terraria and a browser game played on firefox. And the readings show sudden spikes of 100% cpu usage, followed by slowdowns or crashes, be it the game or firefox crashing, if not cinnamon itself.
I believe that it could be a hardware problem this time around
