did you create that home partition, or was it there before?
There before
was a root (/) partition there as well?
better do a resintall them. Also good to have backups and use stuff like timeshift for situations like these so you can reset to a previous state when everything was right.
Oh ok
Is it ok if i encrypt the data
yeah, it could only be an issue if you wanted to change the structure of you partitions afterward like changing size, etc, other than that, it's ok, afaik.
Hmm ill just keep it unencypted and use another os for stuff I need safe
you can also use keepassxc, it also allows you to save files and stuff, besides passwords
it's a password manager app
it stores them locally in an encrypted file
I personally try to stay away from those. I will check it out though.
you can manage things locally, and it's also open source, so it can be less problematic, though I recommend you to research and testing it before using it completely.
BTW is there a way I can encrypt things without the backdoor that intel and amd have?
I live in the US
I'm not sure about that though
Ok
yes it should be pretty simple assuming your partition isnt corrupted (it seems it isn't). first thing I want you to is open the Disks app and show me your disk layout
the procedure will be different depending on what your layout is. you can just make a new partition and rsync your personal stuff to the new one.
and keep in mind, do not ever compile from source packages that are used by the system. you can often break the os by compiling some non important one. but with a c library, no other component was made to work with the newer version. so it'll just break inmidietly. I'm not sure why you would even want a newer version? and please do set up a snapshot system, so that you can just revert in 3 minutes and not have to deal with this
Ok, I need a newer version of c for some programs
then use an OS that supports it?
but it doesn't work
do you want to do the no data loss reinstall still or no
I just copied the important stuff over to my other hard drive
So I'll switch to plain ubuntu
