I have recently fixed my system and now I cannot for one reason or another right click on the desktop. When I do, nothing happens and I cannot do anything on the desktop asides from managing the apps that I already have on the desktop. To clarify, this issue does not involve the applets and desklets, just the desktop. How can I fix this issue? I have the gnome desktop UI installed as well, so I am not sure if this other UI has sth to do with right clicking on Cinamon being unresponsive.

Details about my system:
Kernel: 6.8.0-48-generic arch: x86_64 bits: 64 compiler
Desktop: Cinnamon v: 6.2.9 tk
Distro: Linux Mint 22 Wilma base: Ubuntu 24.04 noble
Desktop Environment: Cinamon

if you right click on an icon itself, that is sitting on the desktop, does anything happen?

yes I get the panel when I right click but not on the desktop

it may have been the gnome thing that broke something

log into gnome, open synaptic. click status, then click installed,

then search the long alphabetical list til you see cinnamon-desktop and mark it for REINSTALLATION.

and then apply with the button in toolbar. Reboot and test.

if still doesn't work, reboot and do it from TTY at the login manager. ctrl-alt-F4

at TTY after loging in,
sudo apt purge gnome-shell && sudo apt purge cinnamon
sudo apt clean && sudo apt autoclean && sudo apt autoremove

#

then once that's do fully, sudo apt install cinnamon

#

warning, this could also fail worse so do a timeshift before any of it.

Just tried the first few steps and I can see just cinnamon-desktop-data, not cinnamon-desktop? Is that normal? Or should I reinstall the cinnamon desktop again?

No worries. I have done the reinstallation and the right click is viable again, however it only works in a certain spot. Anywhere else I would click on the desktop would not work.

so strange. the context menu looks a bit strange too

does it look the same if you right click in file manager, in blank area?

try making a new account in 'users and groups` : example: george2

dont delete the first account. important.

#

then log out of first, and enter 2nd, and see if desktop in cinnamon is normal

yes it does, the account was made 3 or 4 days ago but by then I had installed quite a few things so the issue with the right click might stem from a lot back
