#I want to install a good OS this system, here are it's specs
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
Honestly most linux distros would be good, i'd recommend using a lighter window manager like xfce though
fedora w/ xfce would also work well wouldnt it
Should I install 32 bit or 64 bit?
I will install fluxbox or icewm
whatever your CPU supports
your CPU is 64 bit
It supports both
64 bit then
But it lags alot
wouldnt you want something more DIY then? idk
Mint xfce, xubuntu, elementary os xfce
i dont think that has much to do with 64 or 32 bit
Oh
No, I just want it be working
Some browsers, pdf editors and some flaypaks
Try mint xfce or xubuntu first
You can say school work
Mint xfce if u want flatpak out of the box
^^
I can install via terminal
probably mint xfce rather than
Np
xubuntu since snaps 😅
Still mint xfce is lighter
AntiX seems like it would be good for you
or MX
only problem being that the packages might be a little old
Let them try mint xfce
If that's too heavy, then we go for something a Lil more barebones
i feel like mint xfce would be more set it and forget it wouldnt it
Yea it's debain with icewm
It's Debian with fluxbox
yeah
Somebody was telling me to use 32 bit versions of linux so I was going with lmde 32 bit
wait wouldnt 32 bit OSes have compatability issues with programs
since most are made for 64 bit or
yeah alr
Ikr
Just try whatever you want
Most linux distros will run decent on it anyways
I just wanted so that it works
Install debian stable
I will install something very minimal
yeah
Like i3 or icewm
then use debian stable and install i3 after
I will install mint
Debian stable is solid and just works
Ikr I've used it
mint isnt very minimal
Not very minimal but something very light weight as I said
Like i said just use whatever you want
I will dual boot it since it has some important info in hard drive
Ok I was just asking if it will work or not
Btw the image is in live environment
Of fedora 41
if you want usability then mint/fedora/ubuntu Xfce4/LxQt
yeah ik
Mint with icewm sounds good to me
it's GNOME and is the most heavy out of all popular
Since it's floating wm and I always wanna use a floating wm
I wouldnt advise installing unsupported DEs on mint
if you want a WM, perhaps something preconfigured like antix
Inwas just testing if it boots or not
I will manage that
Maybe I would install devuan idk
Like i said just experiment and you'll find one you like
I can configure it
Or use it unconfigured
i feel like debian stable is good if new packages arent needed
otherwise fedora
and then just install the WM you need
or just experiment like what overseer said
@frigid mountain runs antix on his 2 GB machine
Well yea Debian sounds good to me
If you want the fastest daily drivable OS possible then you can try void with i3
But I like apt configured in mint
it comes with preconfigured iceWM and is debian based
So yea
is void really daily-driveable?
wdym
I've done it before
Void hmm, it will consume alot of time in installing
Also I've never used it
you can test it on https://distrosea.com/
select the full image
Like the packages available for mint is better
Well ik about this site
Its blazing fast but lacks the support that many of the more popular distros have
i always thought it was some niche distro for a few experimental people
Im not new to linux but I've never encounter such old hardware
ah your screenshot said youre new
Mint XFCE or Debian XFCE, even Ubuntu XFCE would work
😂
Not in mood to use xfce, I wanna try floating wm
Then try AntiX or any Debian with an WM
or even MX Linux
Oh okay
What about endevour?
I dont think Endeavour has a pure floating WM, but yeah, you can try it
Mhm
Ikr it will lag. Alot
I will install it
I mean since its pretty much just arch then installing another DE wont be too problematic
Im first backing up some important files even tho I will dual boot
actually it might not be that good of an idea
I'd advise just installing arch
I was skipping that cause it sticks for me
?
If I wanna do clean install
Then I will install arch
Otherwise I will stick with debian or mint
Pretty much any distro not using GNOME or KDE will be fine
Alr
yeah I have the same specs as heisenberg's machine, including same cpu. Antix (full) 64-bit works beautifully on it
comes with icewm (default environment), plus has fluxbox, and JWM too, @sudden shell
only thing is change the browser, cuz Firefox ESR is slow on multimedia
Thanks
What's your laptop name?
Mine is lenovo y510
HP Pavillion dv 2500
What browser do you use?
Oh
Will ungoogled chromium work fine?
I guess. if u can figure out how to put it
ungoogled chromium isnt in the package installer
I will install via github
Wait what package manager is this?
The built in MX startup manager
Oh
Antix Package Installer
similar to MXpi
What actually is the difference between antix and mx?
Both are maintained by different individuals lol
mx is a later evolution of antix, made by OG creator plus the Mepis Linux developers, general all purpose distro
antix is made specifcally with quite-old and/or weaker computers in mind
We will owe to them 🙏
Tekken 6
God of War
whichever you want to install
you got all our collective opinions now its up to you to make a choice
am i seeing this right? 1.9 GiB of installed RAM? or does it say 1.0 ?
yeah same as mine
