#Apparent stuttering when a second monitor is connected?

Apologies if this has been asked before. I have a laptop with its own display (2560x1600, supports 60Hz or 165Hz), as well as a secondary monitor (2560x1440, supports 60Hz or 144Hz).

The first and only game I've played on Mint so far is Sonic 3 A.I.R. (a source port of the Mega Drive game Sonic 3), and I noticed periodic stutters in what should otherwise be a locked framerate (display-dependent) game. When running it on Windows on the same machine, I've never had any performance issues. Out of curiosity, I disconnected the second monitor and tried the game again. No stuttering. Plugged it back in, the stuttering returned.

My kernel is up to date, and I'm using the Nvidia drivers for my GPU (RTX 3070 Laptop).

Is there a fix for this?

One thing I have noticed is that the stutter only seems to be present when the laptop is set to 60Hz and the secondary monitor is set to 144Hz. When the laptop is set to 165Hz, there appears to be no stutter?

Is this a refresh rate mismatch issue?

@crimson hill Wayland seems to be a non-starter for me. It was visibly stuttering even worse on startup. Changing the display settings jumbled the entire UI, and opening Discord has left me with a black screen.

Still no luck with this. Does anyone have any other ideas?

This is a problem with xorg being bad at managing monitors... you just have to unplug the second monitor while playing...

X doesn't support mixed DPI if setting the laptop to 165hz works that is the solution

#

Does it support the max resolution at that refresh rate?

@slim patrol This is a good question. I was just about to set up another support question to do with Xorg and Wine.

#

I don't really know what Xorg is, but I'm about to find out.

Xorg is a set of libraries and software that provide a way for your software to speak to graphics and input hardware.

Drivers, Desktop environments, and UI toolkits essentially plug into X

Wayland is a newer replacement for X but rather than providing One X Wayland is a set of standards that many desktops implement which has helped add complexity and growing pains.

So if you use the higher refresh your issue is solved?
