#Mint Drivers ? Which ones ??

Which sound / graphic driver do i choose, and how do i choose them ?

I have tried installing nvidias proprietary drivers through Driver Manager with nooo luck. Setting my screen to 144hz brought lot of flickering and 60hz is just super choppy. It bleeds like when you have no vertical sync on..Its very hard to look at.

I don't know how to fix the drivers, starting with sound and video.

I went on to nvidias website to download some linux drivers for my gtx 1650 and now i am installing them(i think, i might be dumb with it). They are the latest drivers >.<

wicked oasis
#

the latest one in driver manager should work fine

#

sound drivers are generally bundled in the kernel

#

do not use the the nvidia driver installer you downloaded, it will install the same driver but may cause issues as mint is designed to install through the manager

#

are you trying to use sound through hdmi on your gpu?

wicked oasis
#

can you post the output of inxi -Gx in the terminal?

thin maple
#

Sorry. I was offline and my phone is set to silent...

wicked oasis
#

all good

thin maple
#

I have managed to get MOK key working, thingy, i dont even know what to truly call it since i am very new at this.

#

So right now drivers seem to work. I was able to set 144hz and it's all just...so smooth

wicked oasis
#

oh you had secure boot enabled lol

thin maple
#

I still haven't figured out the audio but uhhhh video seems solid now

wicked oasis
#

disable secure boot completely it should solve your issues

thin maple
#

yes yes. its very on, except i cannot f***ing find it in bios. like i cannot find it to disable it, so i will work with it On

wicked oasis
#

what kind of motherboard do you have

#

on some you have to set it to other os

thin maple
#

if i keep it on, will there be a way(like with the gpu drivers) to activate and make use of audio ??

#

b450 tomahawk max 2 is my mobo ❤️

wicked oasis
#

ill find it

thin maple
#

i have to brb in 5minutes. real life calling

wicked oasis
#

i found the bios option

#

go to settings > advanced > windows os configuration and then theres a secure boot option in the bios @thin maple

thin maple
#

Okay

#

So if i disable that, will there be any issues with windows ? cause i dual boot with win10, i got a fresh install done after i messed it up with the linux mint install

wicked oasis
thin maple
#

iiiii am omw

wicked oasis
#

if not you can just reenable it ig lol

thin maple
#

true !!

#

i forget that is always an option

#

No secure boot option for me here 😞

wicked oasis
#

okay that is really strange

#

secure boot shouldnt be enabled under legacy bios mode

thin maple
#

I know. I remember seeing secure boot option a few years back when i built this, when i installed and reinstalled win8 and 10 and ...

#

Now its just gone

wicked oasis
#

everywhere i found online it shows as the setting having secure boot below it when set to uefi

thin maple
#

Any workaround for having secure boot on, for linux drivers like sound ?

thin maple
#

Interesting

wicked oasis
thin maple
#

Well i can switch to uefi and see ??

#

But idk if win will boot then

wicked oasis
#

yeah

wicked oasis
#

if if doesnt boot

thin maple
#

Eurika

wicked oasis
#

switch that option from csm to uefi and disable secure boot

thin maple
#

Like this ??

wicked oasis
#

shows disabled

#

hmm

thin maple
#

No i turned it off myself

wicked oasis
#

ohh alright

thin maple
#

I ask : do i turn off like this here ?

#

To set on disabled

wicked oasis
#

should be fine if you leave it

thin maple
#

It was on when i entered the sub menu

wicked oasis
#

just save and exit now and test if windows and linux are working

thin maple
#

Ok lets see with it off ! Imma try and boot into win first, and then into mint

#

Yes sir o7

#

They both work just fine. Ive just logged in to my mint now

wicked oasis
#

great

thin maple
#

I wanna test the sound

wicked oasis
#

is sound working now in mint?

thin maple
#

Nope

wicked oasis
#

weird

#

try to set the other option below secure boot to disabled

thin maple
#

I can see more options in input and output, like 5.1 7.1 surround, but uh they dont seem to work for me

#

Standard thingy ? It has 2 options that : standard and custom

wicked oasis
#

ohh

#

i thought you said it had a disable option

thin maple
#

Nope, just the top one had disabled option

wicked oasis
#

leave it like this then

#

go back to linux

thin maple
#

Let me use the sudo command and double check that secure boot is off in mint

wicked oasis
#

sure

thin maple
#

Im in mint rn, as we speak

wicked oasis
#

do inxi -A

thin maple
#

Ok, done

wicked oasis
#

post the output

thin maple
#

like this ?

wicked oasis
#

yeah

#

all looks good in there as far as i can tell

thin maple
#

I think ALSA is a sound driver or something

wicked oasis
thin maple
#

im gonna try to unplug and plug back in my headset, maybe use the front io

wicked oasis
#

back green port should work

thin maple
#

nothing

wicked oasis
#

hmm

thin maple
#

isn't there a workaround ?

wicked oasis
#

honestly i dont know much about debugging audio issues, but clearly its not a secure boot problem

#

since we just disabled it

thin maple
#

mokutil --sb-state says SecureBoot disabled. So it cannot be that

wicked oasis
#

yeah

thin maple
wicked oasis
#

linux mint uses pipewire now in the latest version

thin maple
#

noted

wicked oasis
# thin maple noted

i read the whole tutorial and actually you can try but dont install the pulseaudio zeroconf thing

thin maple
#

nahh i won't try that. i can look up and try a bunch of other things, for sure

#

Could i play the audio through hdmi ? like connect my headset to the monitor ? Is that doable ?

#

WAIT

#

It works. I connected it through my monitor and surprise surprise

#

"Front..left"
"Front ....right"

#

Okay this is doable for me. I can switch from my mobo jack in the back to the monitor when i boot into mint.

#

I can work with this for now !

#

Small update : Front panel jack also works, the one next to my power button.

#

It's just the jack in the back of my mobo that doesn't want to get recognized or something

#

No, this is fixed !! Sound works perfectly 🍾 🍾

#

@wicked oasis Thank you !!!!!!!!!!

wicked oasis
#

lol nice

#

weird stuff

thin maple
#

Can confirm that mic works too 🍾

#

Stupid motherboard

desert karma
#

yeah the program "pulseaudio volume control" is good to manage soundcards (even though latest mint runs on Pipewire) pavucontrol: configuration tab.

#

In your case you have two soundcards, one built-into the nvidia graphics card, and the other built onto the motherboard (Family 17H)

thin maple
desert karma
#

it's just a volume mixer.

#

take screenshots for your own references and save them somewhere safe

#

(of each tab in it) then if u wanna play around u may

desert karma
#
  • open terminal, type alsamixer
#
  • maximize the window so you see full view
#
  • press F6 to pick sound device
#
  • press F3 to filter by output only (playback)
#

look for a column marked line out or line, if it has an m in it, arrow to it and press m to unmute.

#

read "Item" description for each column because they're highly abbreviated.

#

pic is just a sample, with key things to look for highlighted with red.

#

(not counting the actual mic boost column)

thin maple
#

i will as soon as i boot back into mint. i loaded up windows to play some pubg 😄

desert karma
#

i mean if ur front line-out/HP jack works and that's all u care, then no matter. But I thought I'd throw that tip above in

thin maple
#

i think it was my extender dongle thingy, because my headset has a short cable. i bought a 2m cable looong time ago and ive been using is since. maybe that was the problem

#

but yeah i have yet to figure out why the jack in the back on the pc doesnt wanna work.

#

hdmi and front panel audio work like a charm

#

wine works like a charm, fruity loops studio works like a charm, wrath of the lich king works like a charm, like i honestly could not care less for the back port
i will test and let u know !

desert karma
#

my guess is the 3.5 mm jacks on back belong to the onboard sound (your AMD Family 17h chip) and it may be muted

#

as I detailed.

thin maple
#

noted

#

i did get into alsa mixer by mistake, as i saw in a forum post, and i did set some sliders to 100 but idk

#

some were at 0, i did not even touch them

desert karma
#

btw, mic and mic boost on the PLAYBACK filter dont really do much unless u have feedback (loopback) turned on. The CAPTURE (input) filter is where they take effect in streaming or recording applications

thin maple
#

ok

#

brb rq

#

i set headphone to 100 and the moment i reload it, it goes back to 0

#

hdmi and front port have headphone set to 100 in here, in alsa 😦

desert karma
#

have a sharp look at the second and last green column

#

and relate to what i wrote

thin maple
#

got it. it's working through the back port now

#

2meter extender dongle, whatever it's called, works too
im happy

desert karma
thin maple
#

gotta write that down

#

I swear, i am not dumb !

desert karma
thin maple
#

i think i saw that word in a forum post, pavucontrol

#

it's on my ✅ list

thin maple
#

yup

desert karma
#

mint sound settings is a re-skin of it, minus a few features

#

like the configuration tab

#

and latency tweaks

thin maple
#

i get lost with all the names. its so many new words at the same time 😅 i literally take notes

#

i would very much like to see that working before i get it done on my pc, so i will rely on yt videos for it
