#Resizing my OS partition while dual booting

I've originally only assigned 100gb to the mint partition in case I would want to go back to Windows but as this is not the case, I would now like to resize my mint partition. I've not been able to figure it out because first off, pretty sure you need to have the partion unmounted to be able to do that (which how am I to unmount the os partition while on the os) and secondly, from my previous attempt on my other drive, I had to wipe clean both partitions, then unassign them and then create a new bigger partition which is also a pain.

So is there another way to do that? Thanks!

Also while I'm at it, would it be possible to dual boot into windows but still have to option to boot up a WM of that exact windows installation? I play some games with anticheats that cannot run in a VM while some games can run in a VM and to save time, I would prefer not having to restart my pc everytime I want to play these games if i don't have to.

you can boot a live USB distro and resize stuff using gparted from there

#

not sure of the vm thing

no

#

u do need some free space on the windows pt'n ofc

I'm working on getting as much space as i can

I remembered after watching a ThioJoe video on youtube called "4 USB sticks you must make before it's too late"

#

that he mentions about making a Windows backup usb (from your working existing installation)

#

I suppose you could make that, then install a fresh copy of the same Windows version on the VM,

#

and hopefully if u can get it to boot up and get to that blue screen that has big white icons like "Repair, Advanced, ...." then you may be able to have it restore from backup (via the usb) ofc make sure to let the VM have full access to real USB ports/drives

#

though it may not be possible to "activate" windows in the vm since idk it may know another version of the same serial is in use somehow.

show a pic of the rectangle graphic in Windows Disk Management

#

or rather, from gparted in mint live session

minor aurora
#

then run a disk check on c: from administrator-mode command prompt

#

type
c: (enter)

#

then chkdsk /f

#

then open Windows disk management and shrink it from there, I presume you believe you have more than 6.92 GiB space

pallid knot
#

ok, because I didn't want to boot into windows in case it makes it even worst.

pallid knot
minor aurora
#

nah just run chkdsk

#

it may even autorun it when u boot.

pallid knot
#

alright thanks

minor aurora
#

also leave some space for windows to grow/cache stuff. 4 gigs maybe

pallid knot
#

Is there a way i can get into recovery mod from grub?

minor aurora
#

no but u can use hirens boot cd PE

#

get a spare usb and flash hirens on it

#

or redo ur mint usb with ventoy or Universal USB installer, and then add BOTH the mint iso AND hirens

#

Not sure if it would be easier just whipping windows at this point

#

Also mint can read the drive fine

minor aurora
#

watch from timestamp

So I might do it anyways but ill fix it first

dont worry give it all the time it needs.

#

if it takes an hour, give an hour

#

Seems like it worked. I cancelled the defragmentation and tried again and it did the trick.

minor aurora
#

though it's an SSD, so defragmenting shouldn't even be a thing

#

u can now use Disk Management right from hirens to resize stuff

pallid knot
#

am i able to resize mint from here too or should i do that from a mint installation?

minor aurora
#

um use Mint live tools like ...

#

gparted for resizing anything linux

pallid knot
#

alright, I hope it doesn't destroy my linux partition

minor aurora
#

just use disk management to shrink the windows volume.

#

then boot mint stick up

pallid knot
#

Alright got it working

kool

#

mark it solved.
