#DVDs and CDs won't show up in file manager

EndeavourOS Cinnamon.

I just bought my DVD/CD drive and plugged it into my Fedora laptop, and it works good enough. DVDs and CDs are read by both Nemo and VLC. But when I plug the drive into my gaming computer (lsusb shows it is connected) and put a disc in, DVD or CD, said disc doesn't show up in the file manager and therefore isn't recognizable by VLC. I have libdvdcss and its parts and the other libcdo whatever its called installed, and it still isn't being recognized. Any ideas?

install gnome-disk-utility

#

see if it detects media in drive

brittle epoch
#

disk usage analyzer?

zealous river
#

and if so, click the play button to mount

#

no. exactly as I said

brittle epoch
#

oh

#

nope

#

nothing

zealous river
#

what it show? does the drive appear in it, just no media?

brittle epoch
#

nothing shows but the three drives inside the computer

zealous river
#

replug

brittle epoch
#

been doing

zealous river
#

if not, it's a hardware driver issue, not a codecs issue

brittle epoch
#

fun

#

what driver do i need

zealous river
#

install hardinfo or hardinfo2

brittle epoch
#

you sure? it looks like benchmarking software

zealous river
#

and get as much info that endeavour can see about the drive itself

brittle epoch
#

ah

zealous river
brittle epoch
#

what info do you need?

#

it does show up

zealous river
#

post a ss of it

brittle epoch
zealous river
#

u may have to see what the deal is with endeavour os loading sr0 (/dev/sr0)

#

perhaps it must be plugged from boot

brittle epoch
#

i restarted my computer once with it plugged in and ill do it again

#

uno momento

#

not mounted

zealous river
#

seems like it's seeing it as usb mass storage but not as optical

brittle epoch
#

thats kind of weird

#

the driver does say usb-storage

zealous river
#

it should definitely show up as SOME kind of drive in DISKS

#

(gnome-disks)

brittle epoch
#

nope

zealous river
#

bus 001 Device 070

brittle epoch
#

?

zealous river
#

that's what the OS is seeing it on

#

google endeavour os + portable optical drives

brittle epoch
#

its giving me pendrive results...?

#

results dont really tell me anything

zealous river
#

there's likely some issue

#

listed in those results

brittle epoch
brittle epoch
#

its either integrated drives or pendrives

#

i also asked in arch discord but no one responded

zealous river
#

is there anything else in hardinfo that alludes to DVD/CD

#

Check full device tree in it

brittle epoch
#

nothing in filesystems

brittle epoch
zealous river
#

expand everything on the left

brittle epoch
#

yeah?

zealous river
#

anything about /dev/cdrom or sr0

brittle epoch
#

doesnt look like it

#

its not mounted at all

zealous river
#

hoping to know more about sr0

brittle epoch
#

it is not mounted at all

#

there is no sr0

zealous river
#

plug it to Fedora, install hardinfo, and see what's different

#

compared to above pic

brittle epoch
#

driver is also usb-storage

zealous river
#

compare every line. see if any real diff

brittle epoch
#

serial number missing on fedora

#

other than that, nothing

zealous river
#

check with lsblk in Fedora

brittle epoch
#

wait

zealous river
#

does sr0 show up as a dev

brittle epoch
#

i think it might genuinely be a difference of usb 3.2 vs usb 2

#

to test im gonna plug it into the back of my computer and see if it is

zealous river
brittle epoch
#

hold on

#

yeah something else is up than just usb differences i think

brittle epoch
brittle epoch
#

through what?

zealous river
#

lsblk

brittle epoch
#

the size of the mounted disk?

#

RM says 1, size says the size of the CD

zealous river
#

show result of lsblk with no disc in the tray

#

from Fedora

brittle epoch
#

still saying 369.4M

#

unplugged and replugged and now 1024M?

zealous river
#

but what does the device name say?

brittle epoch
#

sr0

zealous river
#

good

#

so something with arch or endeavour not mounting sr0

brittle epoch
#

yeah

zealous river
#

not mounting perse, but loading the concept of it

brittle epoch
#

mm

zealous river
#

there was some ticket someone wanted that exact effect

#

=what is ur ailment was their desire

brittle epoch
#

to

#

not have it mounted properly

#

what is even happening anymore.....

zealous river
#

as for why it doesn't just work in Endeavour; no idea.

lapis kraken

sudo pacman -S udftools dvd+rw-tools cdrtools libdvdread libdvdcss udisks2 libcdio

#

@brittle epoch arch is DYI, so my best guess is it doesn't come with stuff that handles cd/dvd

lapis kraken
brittle epoch
#

Installing new gpu and waiting for parts to arrive

#

I did see the fox tho, will test ASAP

zealous river
#

the fox??

lapis kraken
zealous river

🥱

zealous river

#

@brittle epoch

brittle epoch
#

it doesnt seem like its working? it might be taking a while to scan the disc but that feels unlikely

zealous river
brittle epoch
#

i legit didnt see that, one sec

brittle epoch
#

problem is i dont think the disc is mounted

zealous river
#
Get your drive's device ID by checking dmesg -w, or by doing ls /sys/bus/scsi/drivers/sr. It'll look something like 0:0:0:0
Do `echo -n "0:0:0:0" > /sys/bus/scsi/drivers/sr/unbind` (root permissions required)

This unbinds the kernel's sr device driver for this drive, until you reboot, unplug and replug it, or just bind it back again via echoing to~~ bind instead of undbind~~

brittle epoch
#

im gonna try the bind command

zealous river
#

once u do, u should see in lsblk a device named sr0

#

which u weren't last time

#

and it doesn't matter if there's a disc in it or not

brittle epoch
#

uh

zealous river
#

if u see sr0 in lsblk then plop a disc in, and fire up gnome-disks

#

use sudo

brittle epoch
#

that was superuser

#

i am superuser because even sudo didnt work

zealous river
#

oh

brittle epoch
#

so
a. there is no sr0 or anything diff
b. this thing has usb-c AND usb-a but i dont think i can plug both in at the same time?

zealous river
#

add one more colon to last 0

brittle epoch
#

o

zealous river
brittle epoch
#

yea

#

still no such device

zealous river
brittle epoch
#

the post

#

not any command

zealous river
#

dmesg -w?

brittle epoch
#

actually yes

#

hold on

zealous river
#

or by doing ls /sys/bus/scsi/drivers/sr

brittle epoch
#

hold on

zealous river
#

see what that shows

brittle epoch
brittle epoch
#

brb dishes

zealous river
# brittle epoch

shows sr 6 (sr0) is bound to a drive. so it should show in Disks app now

zealous river
#

the binding present. it should just show up; the dvd tools lot mention are for dvd movies but a dang audio CD, or data-DVD should just work

#

unless if not to sr0 it might need to bind to cdrom (/dev/cdrom)

#

or dvd (/dev/dvd)

zealous river
brittle epoch
#

i installed all that
