#Mint won't install on Acer ES1-533
1 messages · Page 3 of 1
it sounds like it's alive
4GB of ddr3
cuz the one I had from 2010/2011 had 4 GB
4 is fine if u dont crowd the memory with unnecessary open garbage anyway
I think that 8gb or 16gb is the golden spot currently
where the normal person wont need any more than that
mhm
light gamer 8 GB
heavier gamer 16 GB
on linux even u coud do professional audio work with 4GB proper
oh i was gonna show u this other appimage just for fun while i was looking b4 at the audio players
the patter
in case you miss it
Vvave
yeah idk
pinephone
seems to have arm64 download for ARM processors
but also has amd64 appimage so
i imagine could work for computer
I can try and download it for my phone
try on the computer
linux and android are technically compatible, arent them?
when ready.. just for kicks anyway
i wouldnt say that
ppl have to get android emulators even on linux
android is based on linux, I heared
like idk waydroid or something
no idea about any of that
but in general chat they're always yapping about such things
so the phone emulator app ran on ur Windows, u mean?
oh i heard of bluestacks. just never had Windows in a long time so
I dont know what windows looks like anymore
on windows I was always scared n paranoid that ANY exe file (especially one not paid for or from a purchased CD) could fk me
becuz of the easy easy easy spread of virus code on windows via exe
ooh same, and I download a lot of them
Cause I hate microsoft store
malwares?
hopefully not, .exe
oh u meant exe's in general
yes
yeah i last used Windows 7 which was before the "store"
I remember using win 7
some more reputable ones I gave my trust in . like GOM player
I got a minecraft DVD
back in the day, I liked GOM over VLC to play old FLV (flash video) files
from my aunt
is that a full game installer on DVD?
Damn, that is quite old
or sum add-on thing
I dont quite remember, I was... like... 6 lol
It was the 1.6.4 version of the game
ah
And I made my first house once I learned how to walk and look around
It had redstone walls and glowstone floors
u know Microsoft for a while sold Encarta on a CD
one room had lapis lazuli, and the roof was cobweb
which was a multimedia rich encyclopedia
I think I heared of something like that
Digital encyclopedias
yes it was popular until the rise of Wikipedia made that more up to date n volumous
I still LOVE the idea of Encarta or anything on a CD-ROM
simply because it doesn't make u slave to the internet
Did you ever play lsd dream emulator?
u dont have to pay internet bill and have software and info on CD
Oh I get you, it sucks to have to always be connected
no i barely play games
Hmm, you should, it's a fun experience
meh
only game I like is what I've seen on youtube
Carmageddon Reincarnation
and Doom 1 and 2 with Russian Overkill mod
Russian overkill 3.0
and the Duke Nukem 3D 25th anniversary World Tour
along with Duke Nukem Savior of the Babes mod.. omg the firepower is insane!
Based tbh
absolutely insane
they also did Serious Duke
which is a nearly-professional fanmade mod using the assets from Duke Nukem Forever, plus the game engine of Serious Sam and the maps of classic Duke 3D but wildly cooler scenery
it does sound interesting, I'll make sure to look up gameplay for it
and i played a few driving games not many years ago
Burnout revenge from PS-2 was very addictive to me
i really liked it a lot
Oh I know that one, I played it a couple of times
yes . so fun blowing up own car 😄
JAJSJDHDJS yes
I prefered need for speed tho, cause I could tune cars
ah yeah.
No, like... split in half
awwwww
☠️
😢
I got Burnout Paradise DVD (used) only demo play works cuz it's scratched bad
so never got to play.
the disc reader is broken
it didn't look badly scratched in the shop
just a bit here n there
nah the laser is fine, it plays other games
They do that sometimes
I've got a blue transparent and a red transparent controller
And I want to buy a transparent casing for it
i might just order a Burnout Revenge new one day
I like transparent stuff
dope
how's that MX thing moving along now?
same place
I could go to sleep and leave it running
scratchiong my head if it makes sense
does it take an hour to write 18 GB on a hard drive?
i'd guess more like... 1 Gig per minute
or faster
but i guess if u wanna leave it over night
wouldnt hurt no one
honestly, worst case scenario using a USB 2.0 would be 5 minutes apparently
Sequential Read: 560 MB/s
Random Read: 95,000 IOPS
Random Write: 84,000 IOPS
Endurance: 200 TBW
Warranty: 5 Years
hd western digital
oh sorry, it's an ssd
18 GB to SSD over usb 2 would probably be like.... 6 minutes
in my rough rough estimation
High performance 7200 RPM Class spin speed, up to 64MB cache and SATA 6Gb/s interface for the ultimate in power computing for notebooks.
lol
they always use that silly high interface number
the sustained write speed is the limiting factor
oh
in the case or specs u said above,
560 MB/s that's ridiculous.
unless they mean bits not bytes
it was an ssd, I read it wronf
this one is right tho
yeah that makes more sense, like an nvme
By my calculations, it should take 15 minutes at 5mb/s
from what I recall ages ago, most hard drives have a write/read speed (sustained) around 90 to 100 MEGABYTES (binary) per sec
which I'd assume the HD can do
to do 18GiB
I wait
is making sound?
better let it stay overnight just so incase to not corrupt the drive shutting it down while writing n stuff.
yes but it might just be doing weird random stuff
u can play around tomorrow
sure then
been like an hour 3 min
but yeah if u wake up hopefully it booted 😄 keep plugged into power
lol ur gonna interrupt ur sleep at 3 am?
I mean, probably not tbh
I'll wake up and ignore
Anyway, I'll get some rest from linux
the last 3 to 4 days has been me trying to boot this up
time
and we kinda got it working already so it's good enough
check out rn savior of babes duke nukem by Campaign Capton
I was going to ask for help on linux discord but I got afraid
haha u'll be on the edge of seat
Oh french
ok goodnight
this is cool
good night and sleep well ^^
thanks for everything, have sweet dreams
yw gn
Cha, when you get back online, run and send the file from your desktop here
cat /etc/default/grub > ~/Desktop
hello
I cant sleep because of the pc being on, it's not really going anywhere though
should I turn it off?
is it installing vlc?
No, XM
other linux distro
partial instal, whatever. It didn't work
Probably, it took like, 1 and a half second to turn off
almost instant, if not that.
so there was nothing being executed
I believe
I got into mint, it's really early for me though, 4AM
uh are you what are you gonna do now
.
ah ok
Oh it's okay, we can do this later lol
didn't exist, but it appeared on desktop now
paste the thing here
duh that's what the command did
Oh KSHWJH ofc
I cant send it
it errors
but it's empty
what
I'll put it in mediafire
ok
why is the file empty
did I lose my brain
oh ok
yk what just open the etc default folder in your file explorer and copy the grub file here
I created it again and it worked
lol
.
now discord cooperates too
I put the GRUB_INSTALL_OPTIONS="--no-nvram" line, but it didn't really work I believe
na not needed
turning it on
bro there is a deer outside my house
Is she friendly?
ok now run
sudo dpkg --configure -a
bro the heck it's not supposed to
I have one last solution and it's to remove grub-efi, maybe then dpkg will act like everything's fine
Is that a bit dangerous or?
nah I don't think so
We can try that, just let me boot repair
it could in theory mean you aren't getting some security updates for grub, but it shouldn't matter tbh
yes I think
although, his issue is not the same
I don't really think we'll find much documentation so it's worth a try if grub efi fails
can you do
sudo apt remove grub-efi?
seriously???
yes..
okay uh can we maybe uh
sudo dpkg --configure grub-efi
throw the laptop out and find whoever made these drivers?
yes
sudo dpkg --configure grub-efi-amd64
gonna boot repair
because when dpkg configure is ran, it crashes the system. on next boot, it complains that your system crashed while running dpkg and that you need to configure dpkg again
oh
yep that's....

Not great
I'll fix the boot loader and get a fedora ISO
so if it doesnt work out we can install that
or just Windows idk
okay
fedora has an option that won't write to NVRAM, and I think that won't hang up your install. but it may not work when you try to update your system.
What is Nvram?
if you want, we can install windows 1st so that you have it as a failsafe
it's what tells your BIOS/UEFI how to boot your system. this laptop causes a crash when written to it.
so when we don't write, we have to then install the bootloader ourselves and copy over the boot files
why tf
because Acer failed to make proper firmware for it
@hearty badge you may know anything about fixing this?
And could I learn how to so I could make a proper one for this?
It really doesn't sound that hard to make a proper one
that doesnt crash that easily
eh, I don't know how these stuff work, but some nerds who study half their life learning this probably can.
Well, I have quite some time at hand, might aswell look a bit into it
trust me, if it was this easy, someone with programming skills would already write it
this laptop was made in 2016 and people have been trying to install Linux normally on it since then
well, you're right
You have to use Ubuntu 18.4 or older in order to do this. Haven't tried this with other distros because it's not worth the effort. Fuck you Acer, and fuck you Microsoft :) lol
Guides I used:
https://www.infofuge.com/how-to-install-ubuntu-on-aspire-es1-533/
https://askubuntu.com/questions/862946/unable-to-install-ubuntu-on-acer-aspire-es1-533
...
I am not good with software issues, sorry.
said nothing about debian...
Ubuntu/Mint are on a Debian base, so most restrictions are inherited.
ah, okay.
uhh why is he staring into my soul
He knows that we too dared to challenge the machine
I mean, we can probably get it working, somehow. but Idk if it's worth repairing LMDE rn, we can at most try to reinstall it or try MX. fedora would probably work too, but I'm a bit scared cause grub is wonky on fedora
reinstalling lmde sounds... plausible
we can try MX too
and if it doesn't work I'll just have to install windows
and make it very clear to not install linux on ES1
so no other human tries that
we know the instructions now so it should be much quicker
Tbh yeah, I'll boot it live
boot windows first if you want both them
okay
I wonder how Microsoft got windows to run
"yes, this post is a long time ago lol my notebook has already broken, rest in peace but yes I managed, it's a problem in the notebook's bios (there's no point in updating, it's more of a hardware issue than a software issue), it can't register the grub efi entry and crashes so basically you have to install linux without grub and register it manually afterwards, changing the name from grubx64.efi to bootx64.efi (which is the default bios entry) since it can't register a new entry you trick it by putting the bootloader in the same place that would be windows and with the same name the distro that I managed to install was debian, some give problems when starting the livecd and I don't know why, I believe that ubuntu and mint can work too, but I couldn't install manjaro and pop"
ok
red X?
create a new 200GB
whag
stupid
because it broke
How?
Remind me again please: Are there issues beyond the boot manager?
Because if no, you could use install in MBR/CSM mode and forget about EFI boot.
I dont think there's any other issues, although Lot knows more about it
MBR is the old boot method from the 1980s. It is still supported, but needs a "Compatibility Support Module (CSM)" enabled to work on modern UEFI systems. You also need to make sure you use that mode, so the install medium needs to be reflashed with that option. Perhaps worth a try.
Sure we can do that, I just need to install windows first
But I defer to Lot here, he has followed your issues, I just skimmed across your thread.
which is... not going too well
If you install Windows in UEFI mode, you cannot use MBR mode for Linux. Both would have to use the same.
oh
No yeah, that makes sense
I think Windows does use MBR mode if the medium is written that way and you enable/force CSM.
I looked it up on YouTube and I think it does
I just want to install w10 so I can do this
to the USB stick
Oh, your only computer?
Right now it is, yeah, my dad has one but I can't really use it rn
since it's rly early
Idk if that'll work, but worth a try I guess?
When you get around to it, you could use Ventoy for the medium. Will allow you to put both the Windows and Linux ISOs on the same medium. Can also be written in MBR mode.
I am usually all for using modern standards, but when they fail, we might give the old methods a shot.
Can you help me with w10 install? it fails for some reason
fuck it.
I'll just sleep a bit and try again later
it says something is corrupted or missing
your laptop its a hell machine
This is probably a harmless bug. With HP, I suspect malice.
done
it installed successfully?
just select what distribution you want and ping me when you are in the live session
on windows?
yeah on both, so it might work
check msinfo32 in windows
what would you recomend?
it should say boot mode uefi/legacy
probably something Debian based
yes uefi
ah, then curunir said something about forcing windows into legacy, but Im not sure how to do that honestly
I think you'd need to reinstall
that would be fine, it didnt took too long
Idk how to do that either
I'll search about it a bit
and download fedora ISO
btw, the thing where we replace grubx64 file, I don't know how to do that on legacy cause it works somewhat differently
@hearty badge sorry for bothering
if you want to, make sure to get the lxqt or xfce spin
I still have my windows activated, which is weird
since I did corrupt the HDD
when trying to partition it
windows saves the key to your motherboard
ooh
That's useful
anyway, I have fedora xfce in the pen-drive and I'm downloading peppermint aswell
Debian
Ok
Some people managed to install linux and get it working on this apparently, they dont really have much documentation on how, but one had mint 19 once so I think it's possible
I was reading some reddit posts
I mean, we did succeed too
just for some reason the grub package kept breaking
Everything is ready
I think it would be possible to somehow not install the grub package but I don't know
I was wondering
in windows, open disk management
If I had another external drive
we could try and instal linux on it using another computer
one without this bug and try to run it
nah, I tried that a few months ago.
ah well
the system just crashes upon boot
Opened
show
xd
run the installer, configure your keyboard language and user
okay
you in the disks section now?
It froze
When installing
Oh shit, my bad, Imma reboot it
I was supposed to configure it only, not install
I am in the disk section now
there was 250gb free before, but I understood uncorrectly
I can reclaim the space
probably the brtfs one
@acoustic shard would that be right?
you could've pinged me 20 min ago before crashing it
Yeaaah...
But can I delete it?
no
Ok
open gparted
Opened
show
remove 5 and 6
now click on EFI system partition, edit mount options, mount on /mnt
let's pretend this step didn't exist
ok
sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt
on terminal?
yes
now open /mnt in your explorer
show
Idk
remove Debian and fedora directories
I guess you didn't remove that when installing windows..
yes
How do I do that on fedora?
does it not have a right-click menu?
umount: bad usage
as in sudo umount -R /mnt
ohh ok did it
run the installer and ping me when you get to partitioning
the installer?
Yes
hmm
try to reboot
you in the desktop?
2000+
yes
open installer and go straight to disks
No need to create an user?
later
ok selected
then proceed
standard partition, LVMZ or LVM Thin Provisioning?
show your screen and unfold the others
yes unfold unknown
here, type mount point
/boot/efi
if done correctly, it'll move it to New Fedora 40
not done bruh
update settings?
uh I think when you click on the swap partition below, it'll apply changes
uhmm I clicked on it now
noticed it now
idk anything about this
ok
you need to find some part where it says about grub/bootloader
hmm am not sure if that's the thing
ok click next here
there should be a text saying "Full disk summary and bootloader"
Done?
yes
""Full disk summary and bootloader", this option is placed on the bottom of the installation screen"
do that
wdym?
._.
.-.
oh here
Found it?
it doesnt want to connect to the internet too
uhh
you said you have Debian/Mx?
Yes Mx
I never used peppermint so let's try mx
sure thing
Bootyng it up
Me and stunner tried to run it yesterday
I left the computer overnight installing it
but it didn't really work
Maybe arch is actually the way?
I mean, installing it would be rather easy. but later using it is really painful, so I wouldn't rely recommend it
Hmm makes sense
it`s cheking
it runs quite nice too
even on live
xd
ok the panel disappeared
i`ll close firefox
and open the installer again
ok it worked
clicked on customize disc layout, then this
I cant add a partition to sda
I opened gparted
hiii good morning ^^
Yeah, pretty much
it got stuck at 70%?
we couldnt find anything about the grub loader so we gave up cause it seemed like a headache
this one probably wont be different, that's why I was doing that other way last night. but u can try i guess
@amber kettle guide her thru partitions. just as usual. but find an option where it says about bootloader and choose to not install a bootloader - it'll probably complain it'll break your system, but just proceed
oh ur on dual boot now, right
I have to go for like half an hour now. luck
ok peace
Take care!!
right
ok so in the grey space, make an ext4 partition
leave a few gigs at the end for swap
or nvermind if u already have swap
yeah u dont need two swap partitions
since that's what sda2 will be for
so just one large ext4 partition should do
in the grey space
hang on im reading
okay
in the dropdown box of sda5, should list mountpoint or linux root
then in the sda1 dropdown, does it have a use-as: ESP or similar?
ok use as ESP
I had a bit of faith in fedora because it requires you to configure packages manually, which wouldn't cause an issue like LMDE did with a broken dpkg
ok
so hopefully it won't break Mx too :l
ooh, yeah that should've worked, weird
then beside anything that says format, ensure the Quick tickbx is on
so it doesnt take forever
sorry disregard
misread that.
yep, then continue
that's fine
MBR PBR or ESP
big big decision
because u see, if u DONT install grub, u can use SuperGrub2 USB to kickstart the system.
but we'll try installing grub anyway.. to ESP
So, create a swap file?
oh so you DONT want them to
no swap file.
since u have SWAP
Ah ye
@acoustic shard so you really do mean to NOT install grub here?
no bootloader
it didnt freeze yet so it's going well
u thinking to kickstart it with Supergrub?
chroot
oh.
and install grub from there
we could do supergrub but I never used it and I don't know how to
Supergrub is a cool superhero name
i know how
@amber kettle unless MX installer has some specific option that won't write to NVRAM, in that case we can try to
but I don't see one in this menu
it's a usb utility that locates bootable os files and attempts to start that OS
so u use the USB as a kickstarter
So I'll have to keep it on me, right?
plugged in
yes
same idea as what I was gonna have u do last night with MX Live, with persistent storage.
I left it overnight and it didn't went anywhere...
Sure
can grow it later i am quite sure
put ur info and locale
DONT set a password for root if offered to
where?
untick that GRUB box, and next
When I went to type
didn't work
I'll just reboot
great.
I have peppermint
I doubt it would work
uhhhhhhhhhhh
verify the iso
instead of starting it, verify checksum
exited
it must have wiggled loose
shut down, make sure the usb is in the tightest port u can find
Yeah that's plausible
or squeeze the collar down of the usb stick itself so it's tight
then repeat the test from the Ventoy verify screen menu
then have the website open n locate the sum check value
90%
what website?
mx
see if match the exact one for ur iso
5c18cfa3b3c13015e61670661488704958cbda528cfac4094714671fcefd52b1
from site
just read it and compare
what do I open it with
5c18cfa3b3c13015e61670661488704958cbda528cfac4094714671fcefd52b1 MX-23.3_x64.iso
that's what's in the file
5c18cfa3b3c13015e61670661488704958cbda528cfac4094714671fcefd52b1
it only allows Reddit or Google wallet :/
s-ok it matches
redo the installer then, it shouldn't complain anymore
I installed quicktext editor
the reason it probably blacked out last time, is cuz the usb was loose.
just repeat all the install steps u did. u have all the photos here.
alr
can later also boot to windows, get Supergrub2 live image .img file and add it to ventoy, and use that to boot MX with no GRUB 😛
no becuz u cant write to the ventoy in live mode
aight
give up on linux or just so I can reinstall the ISO and put supergrub on the pendrive?
yeah back on windows, check the ISO u had downloaded
ok
if it checks out, just replace the one on the ventoy stick
you can - just select mount Ventoy in Linux in the temporary settings
oh from the white ventoy screen?
yes
i knew there's some experimental option, but I have always avoided it.
how did it work for the 1st time but not now..?
ikr. unless supposedly loose usb drive did sum crud
u can do that in Windows, for both md5 and for sha256 on the original iso u downloaded
if it matches from mxlinux.org then u can just delete the old one off Ventoy, and carefully copy the OG one u downloaded again.
stunner wanna check something in a VM?
I wonder if installing no bootloader will install the grub package. if it doesn't then am afraid we'll run into the same thing as on lmde
okay apparently that shouldn't be a concern
i cant vm
MX iso?
yes
did you verify sha256 and md5?
I will now
do that before downloading a new one
I doubt that just redownloading will fix it, but worth a try I guess
try to create a .txt file there
also it's already downloaded quite a bit of mx
created
oh, no, he's fine
I could try and use an sd card, but mine is read-only
try to check sha256 of a different iso, like fedora
@amber kettle 💀
OK IT WORKED
aight
now I'll try mx
lul
bro I was scared your usb disintegated
Not yet
the iso downloaded, after I get the MX hashes I'll put the new ISO in
capitalize md5
hit enter
I hit
I gained 10 kilos during this thread
didnt u save the iso to C: FIRST?
that way it's easy to have on hand if u need a different usb stick
I miss touching grass
lmao
both match
wait, what's D: drive then?
yes
wait
.
delete the old one and copy the og one
i said this cuz i thought u downloaded onto C:
Oh, well-
almost done anyway, 95%
installer is fine-
koo
PS. after installation, we inmidietly block grub packages from ever updating - this will cause what happened with LMDE
root admnistrator account?
yes
ok
I unchecked it
blank
save live desktop changee?
nah
alr we done
why root disabled?
just need to wait now
for reg sudo
I mean, root itself is more powerful than just sudo
but it's ok
dont need to F with 2 passwords and 2 accounts
I use the same password
can you chroot with root disabled?
sure
done
just put sudo infront of stuff always
automatically reboot and finish?
yes
installation didn't crash?
I Wonder how dual boot looks like
so it wont boot. u'll need to do what lot says now
yeah it didnt
😎
or else use supergrub
we can either chroot like yesterday or supergrub - but rely on stunner on how to use it
windows??--
windows what?
ok how we get into MX?
try the chroot first
did you reboot?
since ur still in live
it booted up windows
ah ok
f12?
do you have supergrub on ventoy?
or f2 for bios?
no
then boot to Ventoy
ok what now?
start mx
sda5 is Linux root right?
hey
what
yes
this might not be the right place to ask burt do you mind helping me with my issue
after u r done with this ofc
