#Mint won't install on Acer ES1-533
1 messages · Page 2 of 1
just did all that above
could work
didnt u just do all that?
we don't have BOOT in the Debian system
grumbles
okay.. boot live usb AGAIN.
I'm cooked
open file explorer, right click and click open as root
I might aswell get my mouse instead of using the touchpad
xd
huh?
maybe u booted real
idk
open file mgr
open start menu and search "install"
ah yeah its here
whatever so did this
2nd easiest way to know if booted in live is check disks app or lsblk if u see a "loop" device
check this
(not counting Ubuntu due to snaps)
k
okay
what
yes
yeah
mount /dev/sda3 /mnt
mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/boot/efi
sudo su first?
then go to /mnt/boot/efi/EFI
oh yeah
yup
reboot I guess 🙏
pray
if it shows no bootable device, I am running out of brain
🙏
HJBBWHWHQJ1NQJ1JQJQJQKQKQJRHSUAIWJEKAKSHWKWKDKSKAJKEKDDKSKWMEH
it works?
HAHhwhdhahs
booting now?
I think so
ahh
well obv if ur ventoy drive is unplugged.
before you say anything: there probably will be an install mint icon on your desktop and in start menu, but it's ok.
😳
me after all this.
bro no way
congratulationsman
I mean.. we did what no other man has ever done
we installed linux mint on an Acer
so congrats
what do I do now?
no installer too
so in summary, is it right to say u helped solved this by FORCE-COPYING in rootmode the image of EFI folder from live image INTO the bad-install drive?
change the wallpaper.
test it out.. do another reboot to make sure it sticks.. correct the time-date
but seems ur good now
I corrected it already lol
not at all. we didn't copy anything from the live environment.
so u just cross-copied a file from one place in the installed efi's folder to another?
yes
for whatever reason
it could be avoided by just .. making correct firmware by acer
having to follow a solution from Ubuntu 14
In a debian
I'll probably try and get an windows iso on this pendrive just in case though
The problem is the secure boot, disable it
It wasnt
well now u can just download the iso from there, and save it to ventoy u have 16 gb USB
the problem is that it was an acer
true
was off long time ago
bro
@wise reef change the title to [Mint won't install on Acer Aspire ES-1]
Hi bro
hello
Mint won't install on Acer ES1-533
and tag it solved in the edit-tags thing
grain*
all 1100+ lines of it
longest tech support ever
and probably take the xfce tag off and put debian or lmde logo
SOLVED Summary solution ^
thats a longest help thread i have seen here good job
tryed to read it all but gave up in half way
alright guys
it froze
trying to install grub efi amd64
or configure it
I'll boot it up again
and just download windows on the usb stick
wtf is this
what do I do?
what you want to do ?
boot from the live usb and run boot repair. now that you have grub sorted out, it should not cause more issues
ok
when I click yes it doesnt work
so I clicked on no
no
ok
reinstall grub
this may require several minutes
ok its... going
I should've never challenged the gods.
but now that I did
nvram is locked.
did it finis
on live or HD?
hd
ok
remove usb obviously
works?
🙏
I have to sleep now. it's getting late. Now, when you run dpkg configure again, it possibly will rewrite the boot repair with it's own broken shenanigans. apparently this can be solved by adding
GRUB_INSTALL_OPTIONS="--no-nvram"
to /etc/default/grub and then try to run dpkg configure again. try it and see. if you require help doing this, ask stunner. ✌️
relief sigh
night
yo this is freaky
Yes
Doesn't seem to work, it froze again
imma just wait and use it like this for now
it just freezes randomly?
im not sure if I added this right, but I think I did
screw the updates!
And the codecs?
I ran my old Mint for seven years
Arent those important?
the codecs u can just grab if u need DVD playback or do big sound work
u sure
everything else should just work with VLC or most players/browsers
I'd add MX xfce and Win ISO to ur ventoy before it's too late and u have nothing again
oh true
I'll download them
then just copy paste, then let the USB drive rest in the port for 1 or 2 minutes after copying so it cools and finishes writing its cache fully
do you know how to make this smaller?
make what smaller?
u mean the titlebar?
yes
or the tab bar itself?
in firefox u can remove it
no the tab bar are where the tabs are
and the address bar is below the tab bar
right click beside a tab, choose customize toolbar
then in the customize toolbar window, there should be a thing in the bottom left area saying using system titlebar. Uncheck it.
try again
move it 2 mm down, right click
ok
Doesnt exist
u right clicked the titlebar
yes
right click the TAB BAR i said
did u open the customize firefox thing yes or no?
yes
look bottom left corner
AAAA
That's awesome, I looked to the wrong corner
This is great really
thanks
I'll just ignore the updates
can also slim the tab bar a bit if it's too fat
Yeah, that'd be nice
too thicc
done
then in the search field u then see, type browser.uidensity
bam
thanks so much for the help
plus in the Customize Firefox window, u can drag stuff up to the address bar that u may like, such as zoom controls, or fullscreen icon, or sidebar icon
and also drag DOWN stuff u don't want
kool alright dont do anything dangerous. let those files download safely
Sure thing
MX is transfered and windows is slowly making it way in too
good stuff. now u have digital toolbox for pc
does urs have a dvd drive?
oh just wondering
look right on the end here, move the metal cover but do not disturb, it probably has a light/hole
there u go, so that's activity light to know if read/write is happening
let it rest 2 minutes
and move my stuff into the HD again
before eject
okay
while u wait, see if u have sudo
sudo su?
Yeah
then try sudo blkid
Soo is everything mostly alright?
in pure Debian, it's usually not, and the maintainer or admin of the pc must do su -
that switches to a # prompt (after admin password entered)
but in lmde case, all is ready
nice
u can try to install something else but gotta be careful
Ok
ok lets try something for fun
I'll install Calibre, which I use for ebooks
u did safe eject / unmount before pulling it I hope
wait
waiting
error
translate it plz
even better
Same error when I try to update
it corrupts the grub or efi I believe
and I have to boot repair
Imma open discord on firefox
it might be better for screenshots
that's concerning
very..
Do you know someone?
I'm all for testing
Damn, linux does run smoother
I'm typing this from linux
at least flatpaks should work, since they arent native apps, thus do not rely upon apt package manager, or synaptic
Could I download steam?
imma try
Oh also,
<git clone https://github.com/mrbvrz/segoe-ui-linux>
cd segoe-ui-linux
chmod +x install.sh
./install.sh
do from
would this change the font?
the software manager
it might, but before turning that script (sh) executable, u really always should read inside it
Okay
see if there's anything saying "steal data" "copy to my bank account /cloud" "bitcoin" "rm -rf"
or "dd "
anything like that which is dangerous
I looked at the font script, seems ok. does the author provide samples (pictures) of what the font looks like?
if u notice the download size, (the first 5 to 8 flatpaks are always huge)
yes, it's the windows font
so u can open system monitor now from start menu
or a knock-off, either way it's similar enough
and see in the resource view, the network traffic
if it is downloading heavily, your FATPAK VLC
Like Calibre font?
probably-
where is the sample photos for this font?
that's papirus icons
which is already in synaptic or software manager, ttf-mscorefonts, icons-papirus
I don't really have those...
anyway, u see the graph for network, it's downloading heavily (blue)
yes
idk i'll try and we'll see
wait
vlc is downloading, just very slowly, I can see the progress bar moving
probably because of where the server is
its not the distance, but the size
.
1,1GB
flapaks are so stupid,
but they're supposed to get smaller the more u have already
that... doesnt make much sense
since they share core junk together
ah great, that IS stupid
if one thing corrupts, all the apps that share it go with it
no it's normal. stupid, but normal - for flatpaks
what are the alternatives?
or the next flapak will just install big
appimage
can i get that or not?
google appimage hub
each file runs like a program , but doesnt really install to core
as long as the properties> permissions of the .appimage file is marked as executable
i use one or two, but much prefer native apps from apt
which I'm unable to get, if I were to guess?
ie: from the distro's "repos"
for now
so if u want to check memory in use :
either top
which also shows cpu use and all processes running
or monitor
oh yeah
and this one good to know for all your system information thru terminal:
inxi -Fxxxz
not all distros come with inxi program, but many do
yassss
My next laptop wont be a intel one
nor acer.
hopefully it's gonna be easier to install than this lol
yeah, it's probably high cause I'm watching a video
of inxi command from before
It is plugged in, it's just her condition
it's less than half of what it once was
anyway, u see that command shows a LOT of vital info, about the distro /DE and the BIOS, cpu and all other stuff , plus number of running processes and memory at bottom
yes
and idk if u knew, but in terminal, up arrow shows command history
to save retyping
Oh it does!
even if made a mistake, u can go up, and correct the mistaken command
that's good to know
also, if ther is a long name,
So I don't corrupt anything again
u can press tab
for example
if u wanted to read a long text file in terminal
cat (no pauses, better for shorter files)
or more
which gives page pauses
so eg: say in home folder was a file called 123456789abcdefghijk.txt
u could just do
cat 1234(tab)
oh, it auto completes
and it will scan the folder, find the nearest match
I understand
about 70% the way there
LOL omy
what's the download speed showing in system monitor?
in the resources graph
171.4 Kilobytes (binary) per secondd
not to be confused with kilobits
or megabits
ya 1.4 isn't fantastic
i get about 5 Mb/s download speed on cheap internet
but good internet is like 20 to 200 Mb/s
mine is able to get that, but my notebook isnt
I'd have to buy a 5ghz adapter and use it instead
small accessories for the panel
go to the download section
Can I have the blue light filter?
search for upload and download speed
after
ok installed it
now go manage tab
find it, click the gear
configured it
adjust interface to be wifi and show as bits/second
it varies... a lot
I'm used to bytes, but I'll use bites to honor you
check in in terminal:
whereis redshift
redshift: /usr/bin/redshift /usr/share/man/man1/redshift.1.gz
if it lists a path, good
that means it is installed
now , go back to Applets
Download more:
search for qredshift
downloaded
and install it, and configure it and add to panel
qredshift is a GUI to adjust the redshift program core functionality
u can also play a bit with Desklets
can I reset it?
reset what?
the filter
not sure what u mean
u can remove the qredshift applet from the panel if u dont like it, otherwise, click the gear and adjust from within the APPLETS window
or, right click the applet itself in the tray area> configure
next, u should see ur system settings, it is that white switchbox icon on the favourites strip when u open the start menu
u see it?
I do
that's ur main system "control panel"
almost all distros have a main settings "control panel" some look more like Firefox settings style
I prefer Mint's and xfce's icon style
in the main settings, u can find Applets, which u already played with, plus Desklets
for example to add a calendar on desktop, or cpu meter or happy picture or idk
that's cool, I can also change the logos on apps
u can also on Cinamon get to desklets from right clicking the desktop
yes, anything that is in the System Settings, is ALSO in the start menu PREFERENCES category thing
and u can just type to access
nice
eg: type applets in the search bar of start menu, and it will open the applets window
VLC is done installing
oh the text editor is indeed enough for me
it's there lol
if u type writer in menu, u will get suggestion of opening LibreOffice Writer, the included free word processor
just for fun, type disks in start menu
random movie I was going to watch
and open the gnome disk utility
then click the internal drive, then click in the main partition of it,
then show full window ss
how much space is used in main partition, according to DISKS?
(keep in mind it reports decimal MB, GB) (file manager and terminal will report binary MiB, and GiB)
ooh ok
u can see from this picture, in the blue region, the used data is a bit more bright, and the empty space is a bit darker blue
if u check in File manager, it may say GiB free instead of GB free
(Windows always reports GiB, but writes it WRONG as a GB)
the more you know
calibre is installing way faster than vlc
ofc cuz it's only few hundred KB of font
anyway, now, even without other fancy codecs, u should be able to watch whatever videos u have in VLC
and play mp3's
oh music! I don't really use my pc for that but I have some in the external HD
u can also explore appimagehub for "Strawberry" a type of media player for music and online radio
just a sec
i think default Mint comes with Rhythmbox for mp3's n m4a n aac files
but u can change that default to VLC or whatever
Celluloid the movie/video player is also included i believe
yep, celluloid opened for audio
u can right click on any mp3 to see options to open with
much like Windows
if u wanna explore Strawberry, I can guide u to get it
and appimage is easy to delete since they're not really "installed" just delete the file and it's gone
like a portable install on windows?
exactly
Also, do you wanna know a good thing about having my windows get corrupted?
any virus that I had probably went with it
yeh
lol
hang on
im trying to find strawberry on there, it was there like a year n half ago, now i dont see
wasn't it open before?
yeah, I closed it and it won't open
same with rhtymn box
maybe it has something to do with codecs
maybe mp3 needs it or smthing
radios work
hang on
go to that mp3 folder in ur file manager
highlight an mp3 file, and press spacebar. Do u hear it play?
no
right click the space in the folder and choose open in terminal
it opens something up
what's the first four or five letters of the filename of the song?
Moti
ok in terminal, u should be in that folder according to the prompt, yes?
yes
Playing raw data 'Motives Project - Ulterior Motives (Hi-Fi '84 AI Version) - Lyrics (128 kbps).mp3' : Unsigned 8 bit, Rate 8000 Hz, Mono
not really
not really or no
no
i mean if ur volume sliders are up
there is sound, but it's distortion
ah
like a tiririru tirire-
ok ctrl-c to cancel
it's kinda nice tho
can u open VLC ?
I'll try
yeah it isn't opening
did it ever open?
it did initially, yeah
hm do a reboot, then as soon as ur back, to desktop: ctrl-alt-t for terminal, then top and record the mem use or take pic
okay just a sec
and free -h too, just for comparison then
k try to open vlc
already did
1.2 GB used on fresh boot
it opened
oh did it.. drag the mp3 onto it
I'll open discord so I can send prints
see if plays
doesnt play
VLC is frozen
😮
yes
what are the built in ones?
.
audio
output mod
ok
idk poke around in the codecs section more
does it play a video file with sound now?
and sound was fine
if it's similar to Audacity, it does need codecs.
do u have any aac or m4a files saved?
yeah fo sure
it works
it is codecs not existing.
I'm listening to my bad singing skills
it's kinda fire tho
it says codecs not existing but it played the aac anyway?
but I'd rather listen to the machine suffering sounds
mp3 codecs dont exist
m4a did play somehow
right. but aac and m4a was fine to play/hear?
yeah
i wonder if u drag an mp3 onto a new tab of firefox if it will play
heh. and that was an actual .mp3 file right?
yes
k. before u do though, I'll help u set up live persist
actually nvm boot it live first
okay
see if it loads first anyway
it comes with VLC and strawberry anyway
just use normal boot in ventoy
note the above picture, if u dont move up/down arrow, the timer will autostart the top selection
also note the above picture the Advanced options thing
that is where u get Persistence options
meaning, u can save the session (including changes/apps u get etc to a certain storage point) and then next time u boot live (and pick that persist thing, it will keep those settings)
this distro feels better than mint smh
does it?
ldme 6 at least
feels faster?
yeah
u notice the welcome menu
I do
it tells u two passwords
demo and root
now demo is usually in sudo group
so the live user is demo, and the live user password is demo (which becuz i think has sudo power) u can used demo as password for installing apps
the terminal is pretty
yes?
in the welcome screen
tweak panel
that lets u easily do stuff like move the panel around
among other things
which are doable anyway in xfce, but it just gives a handy shortcut or automated way to do them
anyway, open vlc
and/or strawberry
i see
and test with mp3
opened both
ofc put up volume slider in tray
sometimes the live system default sound level is soooo low
also notice in Welcome screen, there is a "Tools" link: mx has many handy tools built in.
such as Boot Repair tool
and many others. even making a custom ISO with all ur customizations included
yeah i think that's if u run live system with persistence, and u (for some reason) need to use a higher/later kernel u can
it has some games built in!
MX can run from usb drive persistently, BUT i was gonna help u set up some persistent files on the SSD/HDD of ur pc so it doesnt strain ur usb drive flash
Oh we can do that
I promise I wont corrupt anything (again)
and u can also move those files to a backup drive later they will be two large files
ok so reboot again to that blue mountains menu, and chooose <<Advanced Options>>
ok
then choose persistence item
then show pic, but I think the option is persist_static_root orsumthing
oki
make sure it's in firmly
that's what she said
ha!
this is the MX live GRUB screen , or as I like to call it, the mountains menu
persist
ok so here u have some choices
persist all saves any non-root changes, like home files add/delete/ wallpaper change immediately to the save device and then at the end of session, it prompts u to save any ROOT changes
the other one
persist_static_root:
I choose this?
hang on
i would go with the persist static root with separate root and home things on persistence device
this will immediately save all changes on the fly
so no prompts at end of session, and will make TWO large files
in the next steps
how large?
then some other steps to make the files ready
this, right? just to be safe
yes correct
ok now
hit enter
start?
how
i know must set up
automatically?
u 10 GB was default for home?
Probably
k
continue?
probably cause we forced mint to boot earlier
omg i cant believe there's a stinking timer in this chat
We can just dm btw
nah
should really have made a new ticket but anyway
ok so it's setting up those two big files now i hope
Let's just hope that anyone who sees this wanting to install linux mint on an ES1 gives up instead
And installs other distro or just win10
start init bruv
Now you scared me
anyway it's live booting now right?
koo
it probably did...
usb is flashing? (look but no touch)
the light is on but it doesnt blink
s-ok
once this 18 GB is allocated should be a one time thing
I was gonna tell u put 5 or 6 GB for home
but w/e
the light is off
then next time u need to persist boot, u go to that mountains advance menu, and just choose persist-static-root with separate
and it should auto detect and live boot with ur changes.
also give time cuz 18 GB is pretty big and takes long on an HDD
why would I need persist boot tho?
Oh
does your laptop NOT have a damn hard drive indication light ANYWHERE on it?
I might just... switch to it
Sadly not
that's CRAZY
maybe inside it?
do u hear if u put ur ear very close, the patter of the drive heads?
yes I do
ah
what did?
the boot
i mean if u still hear the drive pattering inside, then it's still writing 18 GIGS
alt f1 doesnt work
remember, it seemed to take like 24 minutes to write less than 7 GB before
idfk anymore, we've spent the whole day on this
hopefully
hopefully... yeah
anyway, if it doesnt work u can just delete the two files they will be in the "Antix" folder in the root of sda3
and then just make like 3 gigs home 3 gigs root persist next time
Btw do you know some way to fix the LMDE 6 ?
but probably have some dinner or something
no I really dont know about the crazy dpkg mess. that will be left open to others here. perhaps lot or Jeremy or coco
12 minutes in.
yeah it's very strange as to why it "froze"?
like while updating update manager
did it do complete freeze where u cant move mouse?
yes
It also corrupts the boot I think
and no keys worked?
Cause I have to boot repair
like ctrl_alt_t
It made a pastebin once
That too
Acer is shit
unless u have an ubuntu account
this would never be a problem if, as lot said, acer made decent drivers
I THINK the boot repair thing has option to use a different website to host the info
sprunge.us i think
I guess...
18 GB is a lot of work for a hard drive
i cant believe u rushed n picked that big number
it was automatic :/
I forgot HDs were slow
yah i figure the live system wont be doing anything with the usb UNTIL the persist files are written on HDD
my first MX (and i used it live for well over a year) i put something like 6 and 4 or 5 and 5
that's around 18gb too though
but taht was on an SSD, and i think only took a minute to set up
(10 GB)
yeah SSD's are amazingly quick to write and read compared to HDDs
especially the nvme ones which connect direct to PCIe interface.
I should get one
It's probably not worth it anymore idk
my old laptops both of them have simple door with one screw on back.
Once I get the money I'll buy a new one, then we can mess around with other distros
or, one has one screw door for drive access, the other has like 5 screws flap to access drive and memory and fan.
I'm a bit young so I'm not currently working, but I'll have an interview next week
oh nice hope u find something nice
third world problems :<
It's a good job, I'll teach english
which is not what I expected to do but it works
24 minutes in. hopefully close now.
Yes
HDD making random patter sounds the drive heads? put ear close.
It is, I'm hearing them more often
ahhhh
it's a nice sound to hear tbh
oh i used to HATE hearing hard drive sounds on old desktops
that patter would PISS ME OFF
JAHDKADJAHJDJS
and make me paranoid that someone was snooping my drive remotely
