#Windows won't boot properly anymore after installing Mint.

Could you explain the steps you took to install?
Perhaps you just need to change the boot order in your bios. Select your linux install, and hopefully, you'll boot into the grub bootloader
I flashed the .iso file to a usb stick using balena etcher. Then I went into my bios and selected to boot on the usb stick. From there I set up linux using the install that's on the desktop.
I've tried switching around installations in the bios but that doesn't help
and also sometimes when I try to launch windows it's just stuck indefinitely on the loading screen
Did you install windows before linux, or linux before windows?
I've been using windows a long time before linux.
@gentle grove first take a screenshot of Mint’s Files app
Make sure to show that your Windows drive is in tact
where exactly in the app should I make the screenshot?
The left side where it says “Devices”
uhh how do you make a screenshot on linux
There should be a Screenshot app pre installed
is there a shortcut?
You should be able to press PrnScr to activate it
here
Uhhhhh
I also get this error message when trying to open it. (the blacked out part is my real name)
How big is your drive?
yeah that's also my second problem. I don't have enough allocated towards linux. I thought I allocated aorund 100gb to it but I don't think it worked.
My drives 1tb
Check the Disks app (preinstalled) to see if your Windows partition is in-tact
You should be able to find it in the Menu
how do I know if it's in tact?
this is how the app looks like
Seems like you have 23GB for Linux and 977 GB is still Windows
yeah I know...
Try clicking the "Play" button and see if anything happens
I wanted to allocate more to linux but it didn't work for some reason
same error message
oh, I somehow managed to fix it by changing around a couple of secure boot settings in bios
but thanks for the help! Do you maybe also by chance know how to change partitions after setting them?
Unfortunately no easy way to do so
You can but doesn’t mean you should
The safest way is to disable disk encryption in Windows and shrink the drive there
It’s much lower risk
or I'll reinstall linux, I only changed a very few things anyways
run boot repair from the start menu and generate a boot summary, then share it here
I managed to fix the issue
how?
I changed some secure boot settings in bios
yeah my bad, I did now
make sure Windows Fast Startup is definitely OFF in Windows now.
I don't think that's the setting I even changed
as for not being able to access the ntfs volume in Linux, open the Disks app, click the drive, and the main partition of it, then the gear icon, and then Repair filesystem.
definitely make sure it's off.
I did do that once but then didn't click confirm since it says that you could corrupt data.
okay I will
it's just a Mint 22 bug that after the first time shouldnt be an issue after
so it could corrupt my data the first time?
I saw smth like that when I googled it but I have no idea what a live usb is
did u install linux yourself?
yeah I did
what does?
the usb after the installation
resizing?
yes of course
it's essentially like u bought an installer in the mail.
okay thanks
at some point I most likely want to resize it that way but for now I just reinstalled linux
then fire up gparted from it, and use it to shrink the ntfs partition some more, then move and stretch the linux one
yeah gparted is the other thing I heard online and I also don't know what that is
does it come preinstalled?
on the live ISO, yes
okay
100 GB is plenty for linux anyway, unless you install so many huge (and yes they're huge) Flatpak applications (prefer to use system/native apps)
or u install massive big linux/steam games n such
wait but I tried to reinstall linux right now and I did have the usb plugged in and my bios wasn't allowing me to select it. I first had to delete linux to be able to reinstall it again
I allocated 250 cause I wanna try out some games on it
well of course.
ohh so every time I want to change the partition I'd need to reinstall linux?
yeah but if I'm only able to use that once I have deleted linux
sorry I'm a bit confused right now
yeah ik but to be able to boot on the usb in the first place I had to uninstall linux
that makes no sense unless u installed wrong.
if u have a uefi system, always boot in uefi mode
maybe. I might of also formatted the usb before I tried using it again I don't really remember all too well. Because I reflashed it at the same time as I uninstalled linux which might of made it work again.
well obviously if u cleard the USB it wont boot. Use Ventoy from Windows environment. it will make it bootable and u can copy the ISO onto it after and it will boot. (additionally u can use it like normal storage)
I used balena etcher
see ventoy.net , and "thiogjoe -ventoy" on youtube
yep
btw side question, when I was on windows I realised that my display was really buggy and sometimes flickered weirdly. So I installed the official drivers and that fixed the problem. How do I do that here since on driver manager I can only change the drivers of my gpu
is it flickering in linux?
in driver manager, the default is the opensource driver. if it gives recoomended nvidia offering, then choose that and restart.
I did use that driver and it still flickered
after reboot?
well u can try another one in the available list
make a new ticket if it still has issues.
there isn't a driver available for my display on the list
there's only one for my gpu
uhh but I did download one from the official website and that did fix the problem
u can adjust the refresh rate to something else in Displays setting.
