#mint install failing
214 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
@fathom steppe you there?
I am,,
did you resolve?
No
can you go to your pc and we fix?
I unfortunately don't have enough time at the moment. Can I do this in like an hour and a half?
Sure thing
to install, you need an root partition, and you aren't making one, so it complains
and also would be cool to clean up that partitioning overall, because it's kinda messy
I will guide you when you come
Do you need me to take a picture of my current drives in windows before we go to linux?
I have it going 1st to the usb, then to windowsm
you on your pc now?
click Win+X and open disk management
and I understand you want to install both Linux and windows?
what is the Recovery D?
We can just leave it alone then
what you'd have to do now is to click on C: and Shrink it. You have very little space so you may want to remove some files. To run Mint, I suggest at least 60 GB
show what's in that place
What's the mynewgame folder? anything you want to keep?
then you can open disk management and remove this partition
Icm back
Ok. now in search type msinfo32 and run it
here, right click RECOVERY and remove
Right click only shows help
show
well. just leave it alone then xd
Okay.
It's a windoze curse really. It's useless.
run msinfo32
Ok, all good. you can boot Linux mint now
I used to run mint at one time. I want to go back to it
I need to backup on an external drive, but I'd totally go back to linux full force. I hate how with each update of windoze it gets slower and clunkier
And they force them on you too
Booting.
Thank you for all your help.
Sure
This takes a bit, or did last time.
I have about 15 minutes, until we'll have to pick up at home.
Ok
What did I do wrong exactly btw?
You didn't create root
It takes a long time with this jump drive.
I can skip the updates to the drivers until after it's installed. Correct?
Yes
If you don't have time now, we can try later
I'm going to try, but I only have until 45 after.
Is there a mode in linux to stream your laptop's video to a bluetooth compatible monitor? (Asking While I'm waiting)
I have a cursor,,,
It's up now
What do I need to do at the partition screen
I'm on the screen now
ok, in terminal type efibootmgr
I had to stop, but I will boot up when I'm home and settled in
Ok. start the installer and go thru
It's loading.
Btw, will this automatically have a bootloader after it is installed?
yes
It's loading. It's slow.
go back and show the screen
hmm, doesn't seem to list windows, for whatever reason
open Disks on mint and show your drive
click on 1 tb disk
6 can be gotten rid of.
3 is the jump drive, I think, 6 shows linux,,,,
And recovery can be gotten rid of.
do NOT delete the first 3
the rest, inspect them and see if there's any valuable data, if no, remove with the red -
1 is your bootloader
2 is Microsoft disk management
3 is windows
Hiw do I inspect them
click on each of them and press the ▶️ button
I don't even know what that means
seems like some leftover of Linux. delete
Please walk me through this.
what do you need help with tho?
How to delete it
select it and press the - in Disks app
oh sorry, click the gear icon on par 3 and then resize
press Check/Repair filesystem
check
It's undamaged
shrink it at least 50-60 gb
Okay. Taking it down 34 gb, making it 50
Resizing
What's the next step?
It's going to probably be awhile
in the installer, select something else like you did before and then select "device for bootloader installation" at the bottom and select /dev/sda1 (your eif ;partition)
Okay. Will all the rest be smooth sailing?
no
Thank you for all of your help
May I tag you when I am ready for the next step?
yes
you also need to make a new partition, all size and mount /
then you can install
yes
Like that?
select this yes
It won't let me.
Maybe I should restart the install.
and show whats there
yes.
Start over
it propably hasn't updated yet. so you can go back and then there again or just close and open the install again
I'm already much happier with Linux's speed. Windows is really weighed down
It's got a few more screens to get there.
I have a new option!
it appeared because the partitions are finally normal, lol
but you can do Something else if you want
Yes?
yes
you can set your windows drive to auto-mount on startup
if you want to access your windows files
It should be a choice right now.
Thanks again for all your help!!!
sure
It boots to Windows. I think I might have to adjust the boot order in the BIOS to fix this.
Am I right?
Or should I just look for a bootloader?
yes, put 'ubuntu' at the top
run boot-repair from the live USB
Just did that, it still loads into windoze
I did it on linux side
run cmd as administrator
Still loads to windows
I think I'm going to have to look into getting a bootloader
that comes with mint
go to your BIOS and show the boot options
May I dm you?
Got it!
I changed the boot order from windows to linux, and linux always offers the boot menu
Thank you again for your help
I have one issue, but even in the linux community this is an issue,,,, the J5create USB to HDMI Model JUA258 is not being recognized, and support on the website is for windows and mac. Not linux support.
