Linux Mint refuses to utilize my Nvidia RTX 3080 Mobile Studio card, both my NVIDIA option and INTEL option in PRIME-profiles use the integrated graphics and it wont allow me to use my rtx card despite trying all the different drivers given to me, I really like linux, I switched to it yesterday and I want to keep linux but if I cant play games then there's no way I'll be able to.
#Linux Mint refuses to utilize my Nvidia RTX 3080 Mobile Studio card.

Secure boot is off
I have tried every driver provided by mint
I have tried using the normal driver from the nvidia website, mobile and non mobile version
yes I deleted the previous driver before trying each
and I did it through the command prompt to give them admin download
I have messed with prime nvidia, tried every setting
I have restarted this computer almost 50 times by now
I have spent over 5 hours trying diffirent things to fix this, I cried myself to sleep last night and am still trying to fix this this morning
how do you know it's using the integrated card?
when I open up hell divers and check the graphics card it says im using the intel intergrated gpu and it runs poorly
in nvidia prime it says intel igpu
no matter wether I switch to "intel" or "nvidia" in nvidia prime it still uses the intel igpu
terminal
__NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1 __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia steam
is steam already open?
then read the output and close It
the output?
what do you mean read the output?
"Steam is already running. Exiting"
leave it be. what happens when you close it and run the command?
same thing
I tried shutting down the background processes for steam but that proved undoable so im going to restart and try it
noticed when I restarted this time little text popped up saying something something broadcast something new line new line GPU something to novuan
and I think that might have something to do with my issue
@eager urchin Here's the output
this seems to be the issue
whats nouveau
it seems to be messing my stuff up if im not mistaken
okay that fixed but now all my games crash on startup
Okay so turns out there was a graphics driver overidding the oficcial nvidia one called nouveau and I had to disable it by creating a sopecific command file and using the console to administritively move it into the files of mint to disable it
this mean the computer has now RECOGNISED that an nvidia driver is there BUT its broken and so with that it has falled back onto something called llvmpipe which from looking it up said it was a fallback for nonfunctioning graphics drivers (thats nuts, windows doesent have that it just defaults to bios when you disable drivers) but this means if I repair my nvidia drivers I will have a functioning graphics card again
after 10 hours and no experiance with linux I have diagnosed my own driver issue and figured it out completely by chance
OH SHIIIIIT GUESS WHAT JUST STARTED PLAYING ON MY SPOTIFY
goes hard
back to fixing my shit
Just found a portal to another diamension on my pc
I found the old drivers for my graphics card and I tried to delete them using console commands and it didnt work, when I checked inside the folder it looped back to outside the folder and kept going
almost like pt, it was the same folders over and over again going on infinetely in a loop but they where all technically diffirent folders
like some sort of non-euclidean horror game
If this is still unsolved, please share the output of inxi -Gxxxz.
with or without full stop?
oh, is it trying to use a driver thats for arch kernel and not for ubuntu
this would make sense because I got the driver from the nvidia site without checking if it was for ubuntu
@narrow isle you are using mint 22 ?
so it's not a kernel version issue
hmm i see
would it be worth figuring out why the drivers are bugged or just removing them and replacing them?
to be fair its my first time using linux so maybe I should take the opertunity to know more
The key thing here is ports active. It says the eDP (embedded DisplayPort = laptop screen) is active on the iGPU, and no ports are active on nvidia. Is this Mint Cinnamon?
ja mint cinnamon
I thought it looked pleasing
thats why I chose it
sry for your bad experience 😔
It should present you with a switcher in the taskbar automatically when you have dual GPUs. Is there perchance a little Intel symbol down there?
dont worry, I actually switched to linux because atleast linux issues are fixable unlike windows + linux runs so much nicer
I did until I disabled nouveau and now its running on llvmpipe
The Intel symbol is the one you click when you want to switch to nvidia, dude.
uhh, sorry I thought you meant the little icon on the bottom right
your integrated graphic card works ?
Also, inxi says your nvidia is running the nonfree 550 driver, which should be fine.
I did mean that.
unfortunately, wish it didnt, it keeps getting in the way, I need my main card to work
but if you have not active port, it means that's a monitor issue ?
but the precence of llvmpipe says otherwise right or am I mistaken? when I looked it up people online said it was there when the drivers arent working
cant be, I'm using a laptop
strange
The is Optimus, or Dual Graphics, or whatever they are calling it these days. Mint Cinnamon has support for switching it, so if it detects nvidia and an iGPU, it will load that applet into the system tray to allow you to switch.
well, the issue was whenever I switched it would use the igpu either way
this was because something to do with nouveau
Actually, switching works better with nouveau, it is just that fps are lower on that one.
hmm, I'm really confused then, so what do we think exactly has gone wrong
are you using your integrated graphic card to screenshot your terminal ? 🤔
this was a screenshot froma while ago when I was stuck on the igpu
at the moment my computer is utilizing llvmpipe
If you installed the binary blob from the nvidia website, that was your mistake. nvidia does not give a shit about your Linux desktop. You need to use the drivers from Driver Manager, which were packaged by unpaid volunteers to work properly on your system.
Where are you seeing that?
that makes sense, so how do I get rid of this old nvidia driver to put in the better one?
Restore a Timeshift snapshot or reinstall. These are sticky.
yeah, I mean, its mostly the reason I switched to linux, apparently Vr runs super good on linux too
I'd rather avoid timeshift at the moment, how would I reinstall without it?
this makes things harder
I meant reinstall Mint entirely. You can of course find the exact package name, then apt purge that. Afterwards, you want Driver Manager to fetch the nvidia one.
advice : install your linux distro with a btrfs filesystem
could I get that in words I can understand? sorry, I'm fairly new to linux
Actually, also check in BIOS if your dual graphics is set up in a weird way. I had an old Thinkpad workstation with a Quadro that would not even expose the dual graphics to Linux until I disabled some stupid "OS aware" setting in BIOS.
btrfs is a filesystem (like NTFS on Windows), the most standard filesystem on Linux is ext4 but you can't snapshot with ext4
You need to uninstall that nvidia driver. I do not use that crap, so I have no idea how to.
my bios doesent have any of that because my laptop has a custom bios which misses and skips out on important bios settings and options
not my doing
Do not give that advice to newbies, unless you are volunteering to be their personal tech support.
okay 👍🏼
you dont wanna be my personal tech support, all my jokes suck and im awful to hang out with
btrfs is the best thing on linux 😹 I snapshot my whole system (root and home) in few seconds !
so, just to clear things up currently the suggestions are:
Reinstall cinnamon and get the right driver
Find a way to replace the drivers in an alternative way
It's alright, we will manage. You can either just wipe and reinstall Mint to get to the desired state in ~20 minutes, or figure out how to remove that nvidia driver. If you are lucky, it has an uninstall script somewhere.
and given how new I am I likely wont find it
it allready took me 17 hours to get here
You can just open the start menu and search for nvidia, see if you find something with uninstall.
tip
ctrl + alt + F1..F6 (to enter in the console mode and you can wipe your linux and reinstall cinnamon 🤷🏼♂️)
ctrl + alt + F7 (to come back to the graphical view)
thank you, this will come in handy
If you manage to get the nvidia driver removed, reboot and check Driver Manager again.
just out of curiousity, what kind of music do you guys like? I always wondered what linux people's music taste was like
I should be able to just sudo rm them right
Try sudo nvidia-uninstall
nothing, linux users have no time, they are recompiling the USB driver for the fifth time 😔
AH I TRIED THAT EARLIERRRRRRRRR I didnt know there was no space, I did sudo nvidia -uninstall
come on... 😂
You were pretty close, then.
second advice : never nvidia gpu always amd 😹
did it work on wayland ?
wayland?
because the rendering platform is called xorg
another display server to replace replace X.Org
not supported on cinnamon nor mint, so I wouldn't confuse the op for now
i'm not really asking to op tho
I'm not confused
ANYWAYS ITS WORKING YIPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
sorry. you just didn't know what Wayland was
how did you install so that it wasn't working??
for me display server = server that handles windows, keyboard, mouse 👍🏼
it was novarou
well, you still have it on your system, as I believe this is a clean install
for some reason it blocked my installed nvidia driver from running
yeah but its blacklisted and doesent run
no i didnt clean install
just deleted prev drivers and replaced them
that's what happened (or at least should've) when you installed them before I believe
ah, good to know
yeah but sometimes some things just dont go to plan which is fine i suppose
gave me good experiance with driver issues
I was really confused by your initial issues but glad you got it working now. congratulations
So you have been stucked just for this ? 😹 #1273656907265216602 message
basically yeah
sry for you 😹
but that wouldve been after noverau which was 90% of the original issue
no problem, mistakes happen lol
I wish I could code linux in C++ instead because its the coding language i know
like programming when you forget semicolon 😂
litterelly
or you accidently put a . instad of a ,
in an array
Wait, you are running it on nouveau now?
no, I blacklisted that ages ago, it was the start of the issue, after that all i had to do was delete bad drivers from nvidia and put in the reccomended ones
why you should not ?
that and fix the issues i caused when i first tried fixing everything
wait
Alright, check in games if things run as intended, then feel free to mark the thread as solved.
you want to code C++ on linux or code linux in C++ 😂
ja, thanks
either, thought it would be interesting
so you want to code a kernel
I'm very aware im way in in over my head here and I have a feeling anything I say right now may make me look silly
but essentially I would like to see how I could use C++ to improve my experiance with linux
as its the only coding language I know
no bro, i just want to understand what you want to do
okay 👍🏼
imo
C is better for that cuz linux is mostly written in C and you can learn some linux syscalls from C 🤷🏼♂️
there is a Linux Programmer manual used by C programmers with the man command
yep, helldivers running max graphics 60fps we all good
damnnnnn I hate C# thooo
C# ?
C and C# they are the same thing right
no
THERES A THIRD ONE???
C# is a high-level programming language developed by Microsoft
oh, huh
I always assumed C++ was higher level assuming we're scaling things in the way where binary would be lowest and not by its complexity
so is C++ essentially just a tweaked version of C
hot take but yes
seriously C, C++ have its advantages
that makes things easier
I'm qualified in coding with C++ so hopefully the transition to C wont be too hard
👍🏼
you have to close this thread rn
C was created together with Unix in the early 1970s. C++ is a follow-up with many changes, and mostly its own thing now. C# is a modern language created by Microsoft for managed code. All of them are still used. Plain old C requires more developer discipline, but is closer to the hardware and potentially creates faster binaries. But this topic fills books, so if you are interested, have fun studying this.
oh boy, my favorite thing to do, get interested in something and bash my head into a wall over it for hours
C is a fancy Assembler
gonna make linux say DEEZ NUTS in big letters instead of the mint logo on startup
this is my mission in life
anyways, time to do the thing that was the main reason I got linux
slimevr trackers
it's not really hard
