I set my screen to turn off after 5 minutes and log me out of the system if I'm away and forgot to lock the computer. However when I watch a video using VLC it still logs me out for inactivity after 5 minutes. Can I somehow make my system understand that VLC playing a video should make system active and not turn off the screen?
#Screen Locks when VLC is playing a video. [SOLVED]

install and make active the "Inhibit" applet found in Mint APPLETS
else type 'screensaver' in start menu, and set the idle time longer
Could you explain how it works please? Do I have to turn it on when I'm using VLC so it doesn't go to sleep? Will it prevent my system from locking even if I'm not using VLC?
it just loads automatically in the systray. its icon changes state when it is detecting audio/video or similar
it will inhibit power suspension or screenlocking
As a workaround I set screensaver to lock me out of the session and set it to 5 minutes (so VLC actually prevents the screensaver from activating) and then display off after 15 minutes
ooh I get it
I will test it, thanks
Now I wonder if I can hide it so it doesn't stay in my panel, it's starting to look messy in here
if inhibit doesnt work, set screensaver to about 25 minutes or more, and power off thing to 1 hour
keep an eye on it so u can see when it is doing effect.
It does detect VLC when the video plays
applet drawer is another applet to condense the visible applets
Downloaded it, the idea is great but I'm lost at how to actually move all the applets, when I try to drag them in panel edit mode some of them are dragable and some of them open the context menu
some may cluster an swallow into the drawer, while some may not
huh
see the docs for app drawer

Inhibit applet detects VLC and works just fine
