i got a new drive for my plex media, and moved everything to it took all night to do, and now couple days later i found something went wrong, there was 3 seasons of a show it f***ed up and i cannot delete them, i have successfully moved them to a dummy directory and tried to sudo rm -r directoryname/ but then it just comes up with this in the picture, how can i remove them?!
#im about to throw up, please dont tell me i have to format my 8tb drive...
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
doesn't Plex have a GUI?
yes but have turned off deleting via plex besides i should still be able to remove them from terminal, but they are corrupted
have even taken the external drive and put it on my windows pc and still it wont let me delete them
Think you need " and " around paths with spaces in names
im removing the whole directory and its content reason why the -r exists
still need quotes
not if the directory does not have spaces, then rm -r directoryname/ would remove it all, and confirms what i mean cause on windows i cant remove them either
type the command here exactly as you entered it
and from the folder prompt u were in
well i dont know if im allowed to swear in the chat as i called the folder something else seen in the screenshot
ddd
but this is what i wrote and then it came up with the output of the first screenshot
need a leading forward slash
as in /fuck
provided that the "fuck" directory is directly under ur working directory
type pwd to see ur current working directory
then type ls
okay let me connect the drive back up to the linux machine and let me try
@autumn cove okay so what would the full command be?
nah, im in the right directory and neither worked
do a ls -l
see what's there
and note the permissions
thats what im saying they are like filly corrupt, and no all 3 are files, they were once directories, but not anymore...
now they are that
oh if they're just files, then the perms start with "-"
see #1050504228029874206 message
even so, that does not change that i cannot delete them...
please do an lsblk from current prompt
can i get that in like cardboard style, i am very noob to linux
i am in the folder where the 3 files are located yes
3 disks
2 partitions each
sda, sdb and sdc
yes first one is boot, second is currently empty and 3rd is the one i use
so next, u will do a filesystem health check
i just got the drive, shouldnt be anything wrong with it
typecd /
root, yea
first command dont work
hm. do u have a desktop environment?
close ANY application that may be holding sdc2 busy
fully close that application.
including any other terminals
no like it says command not found
np maybe im out to lunch, but i dont think so
in the Mint start menu, type disks and launch it
you should see that very large drive there.. click it, then click partition sdc2, then click the black square stop button under it.
noting is running and cant unmount with that program either
that will unmount it
ok is Plex somehow set to autostart when u run up ur Mint pc?
yes but i did sudo systemctl stop plex...
open "system monitor" from teh start menu, and click its Processes tab, and confirm that process isnt running
tick the "Show processes from all users" thing, idk if it is a menu option or whatever.
yes plex is not in there
if anything plex is shown, right click and choose "kill"
ok in the disks application, click sdc2 partition in the diagram, then the gear button under.. do a "check filesystem"
ah
open Settings, then Startup Applications item.. untick the Plex driver/app
then reboot.
plex is not in there
it shouldn't be a darn thing to simply check the condition of the file system on sdc2, either via Disks app, or via fsck
k do a reboot, and retry
do a filesystem check via the Disks application
if all is clear, then u can just as easily run sudo nemo from terminal. That will open up a root-mode file manager, then navigate to the volume which is sdc2, and delete the files one ata time.
nope same issue cant unmount
i cant move them out of the drive just to different places on the same drive
that's fine. can u delete, from method I just said?
the cinnamon file manager
explained it here
oh and no, also gives me an error, that was the first thing i tried before going to the terminal
just gives me this on all 3
well, let's just say that the drive's filesystem is a bit buggered, it should be serviceable from using a live boot, because Idk what's locking it and making it unmountable.. do u have Windows co-installed anywhere on the machine?
nope its a standalone i use it as a 24/7 server
but i tried taking the drive to a windwos machine and i still could not remove them
Windows typically won't even see an ext4 filesystem
its not
which is what sdc2 contains
well u can do a filesystem check and scan using Windows. however, I would strongly encourage you to format the partition sdc2 to EXT4 if to be used on Linux
if u dont want to move the physical drive to a Windows computer, u may use Hirens Boot CD PE on a thumb drive. it will offer the similar tools
i just really dont wanna have to move it all to the other drive again plus some of my windows drives then format and move it all back again and risk more corruptions... there is over 5tb on it
yeah but what's on sdc2 now? just 3 files?
no all 5tb the 3 files are just on a folder by themselves
oh ok. well do a chkdsk on Windows on it
no if it was only the 3 files i would have reformatted in a heartbeat
fsck would have been useless on a non-FAT or non-EXT drive.
so i move the drive to windows again and then check the drive?
do NOT do a surface scan, unless u want to wait several days. quick check with repair is chkdsk h: /f in Administrator command prompt. (use the drive letter it really is instead of h:)
i said f not d
but the drive letter is d
then it's chkdsk d: /f
yep
oh! it deleted them on its own!
crosslinks n crap may have occured.. or bad filetable entries
oh thank you so much, you dont know how many hours you just saved me
now i just need to go get mt 3 seasons again, but thats a whole lot better than the alternative
if u download a lot of movies or whatever via linux and send it to that drive, consider subdividing the space (create an sdc3) as an ext4 partition. that way linux dont have to write to foreign filesystem
yea i do it more manual, i have radarr and sonarr on my windows system together with qbit on windows and then i just use a network share to send them over
thats easier for me, that way i dont have to mess with the server almost at all
another simple way to do it is, a) make the ext4 partition b) install winpinator on Windows c) use warpinator on Linux Mint ( I believe it has a daemon that runs on startup anyway) d) use Winpinator on Windows to send big files DIRECTLY over the network to Warpinator location (sdc3)
i bought a NAS a few months back, but i have kinda given up on it as i didnt understand how to set it up, so that was 850 bucks for nothing....
linux is just not my thing, i only did it as windows i used before for the server kept restarting for "updates" and most of these things are on linux like docker and stuff, cause docker for windows sucked
so i really dont wanna have to think about linux other than once in a while going in an updating it
just saying this method is super easy to transfer files over a local network, and the benefit of using the ext4 partition means no fs errors.
and it's all point and click
yea, i will see about doing that probably another day when i have a bit more energy, this took a lot out of me, but yes warpinator does sound like a good idea, but again i cant thank you enough i think without it i would probably have had to move all the files to tother places and reformat then move back and risk more corruptions... so you saved me so much
you're welcome. mark this one solved
yes it mounts but not the place i want it, i want it to mount in the /mnt but when i go in and specify it just ignores it
it has also changed from sdc to sdd
why not give sdc2 a nice label, and just have it mount to /media/$user?
cause then it wont allow me to share it...
happens when other drives are present.. much like Windows can assign E: to something that used to be D: when something else is there.
ill try
u can also see in either /media/$user/ or /mnt if there's a dead placeholder folder
reboot. just have the drive connected from the start
okay atleast its sdc2 now again
😎
the 200mb one it creates itself
no, its there by default
oh idk enough about Plex unfortunately to know its dark magic
its not plex, it just the disk partition
show the screenshot of Disks app,
see its that small one it mounts to there
can i just remove that partition or is it there for a reason?
was this drive at one time used as an operating system drive?
no its brand new
your boot drive for the Mint system is the 256 GB Disk then?
yes
click that drive and show.
i wonder what on earth made an EFI partition on ur sdc
maybe u did when u installed Linux?
cuz data drives shouldnt have that
that's for booting the system..
so i can remove it?
check what fstab says about it first
open nemo in ur system drive
click "file system" on the left side to view the root of it
then go in the etc folder
then type fst to get to the fstab file
then double click it, maximize the window and show
did u use the Disks app to have it mount that big drive automatically on startup?
cuz the last few lines tell me that's likely the case
yes, but once i removed it and put it on windows and next time i put it back in it reset
let's do it better
cuz this looks hairy af
first, copy the fstab file out of ur etc folder, and paste it in ur home folder, then rename it there fstab.bak
done
did u add that line starting with LABEL?
huh
4th last line
it must have been Disks app. in one case it added by Label, in another case it added by... well, u see
and then it duplicated it too
first thing is, unmount that big drive.. leave it detached. then reboot the system, and see if Mint reboots flawlessly
i mean it should but lets see
(besides it taking longer at startup time cuz the fstab process wont easily find it.. give it time to give up)
it should give up in 1 minute, then continue booting
oh lovely. the big drive was totally disconnected right?
yes usb not connected
great. plug it in. then open Disks app and show it without touching other things just click the device on left
and mounted the other one to some media/deamon...
i wonder why that EFI partition shows a star. Cuz things that are either a) mounted by fstab file at startup time, or b) are seriously system-related are to show that star
unless it's a plex thing that somehow did that
but personally, i would unmount and delete that partition
yea the small partition on the 5tb drive dont even have a play button so it cant even be mounted
well it shows it's already mounted.. ie: presence of the play symbol in it, PLUS shows a mountpoint in text
so delete the small partition?
oh i see the big partition also has a star.. ya it must be plex hooking it
idk how plex works enough .. does plex need to boot like an operating system, or is just an application that runs on Mint?
so to delete the partition i have the small one highlighted and then the big red minus button right?
just an application
ive had this plex running for months now only added this drive a week ago
so it shouldnt be connected to plex in that way even if it did need an OS
kill the plex process (any of them) in Process tab of System Monitor first
then unmount both sdc1 and sdc2.. then delete sdc1.
yes
also, is there a FAT partition in that other big hard drive??
mounting what ?
but u killed the plex process right? and u clicked the view thing to show ALL PROCESSES FROM ALL USERS?
yes
u didnt delete the 1st partition right?
it can mount if i "use system defaults" but then it wont be in /mnt/
i deleted the small one
200 mb one
highlight sdc2's UUID, and ctrl-c to copy
then open file manager
navigate to root of the filesystem (/) on ur system drive
then right click the etc folder, and do "open as root"
then find the fstab file as before. ( i hope u made that copy of it earlier)
then double click the file, and it should open in root editor
yes
go back in Disks app. uncheck anything having to do with that automounting of sdc2.
i think just leave teh top toggle on saying 'use system settings'
mount at startup is off
but if i leave it at system default it wont mount at /mnt/
delete the last two lines entirely
put a # sign at the start of the empty line after the /swap line
like that?
then put another # (comment symbol) on a line beneath it.. and then type Changes I made for manual mounting of plex drive(s) 17-Jul-2024
no, dont comment out the swap line.. i said below it,
ah i see
then on a new line below the comment type UUID=
and then immediately ctrl-v to paste what u had in clipboard
yea
show
then press tab once, type in /mnt/drivelabel
use the exact spelled drive label that sdc2 shows in Disks app
case-sensitive
yep
the press tab again and type auto
then tab again and type defaults
then tab again and 0
then tab again and 0 again
im still jsut worried that deleting the two LABEL lines will mess with the other drive i have as it mentioned something with that aswell
then show
gonna remake that one too
put one more tab key between teh mountpoint and the "auto"
done
now go back to Disks app, pick ur other hard drive and it's old Plex partition
and then i assume do the same for the other drives UUID
copy its UUID
yes, on a new line, and specify mount point in same manner, but with its actual label (case sensitive)
and put one more # sign on a fresh line UNDER the swap line so it's easier to read.
when you say "actual label" do you mean the drives name or what i want the folder to be called?
label
or whatever u manually create a folder to be
but u must create the folder before closing this text file.
sure
just make sure that folder exists in its exact spelling in the /mnt/folder before rebooting.
also both folders are there so should be fine
k
so should look like this?
yup
and make sure in the Disks app, even for the other old plex drive, that NO automounting is dictated
so ur manually edit entries are the only thing taking effect for the 2 HDD's
double check fstab file before rebooting, and after closing Disks app
it was set to mount at startup aswell, so turned that off and then fstab changed to this?
do i just edit it back to how it was
it aslo changed the bottom one with noauto
take that out
and it does have the # my screenshot was just slightly cut off
if any issues, then remove "default" and replace with noauto, but I think you'll be ok
show new SS
okay i have double checked no auto start up is on and fstab looks like it should
try a rebbot
we do have the backup if it totally fails
just remember booting will take way longer if the USB drives are disconnected at the time the PC starts
usually dont take that long
so leave them plugged and powered on when rebooting
already booted
u should see the two drives loaded now in the file manager's /mnt folder, u can also make bookmarks of them
and if u add another ext4 partition to the 2nd HDD, u just shrink the NTFS volume (get the gparted program) (ensure it doesn't change the UUID on the shrunken thing, if it does, u'll need to re-edit the fstab) and then u can add sdc3 by UUID to fstab
okay they dont show at the side anymore in filemanager but they are mounted in the right places, is there a way to get rid of the recyclebin and system information? are they safe to be deleted
no leave them. those are proper for Windows, in case u have to move 'em around, or do chkdsk later
-_- does not look as clean, but oh well
seems to have loaded everything
and yea it plays my files so it is detected correctly
cool. i guess this is finished then
just need to readd the 3 lost seasons of doctor who but otherwise seems to be fine
right click in one, see if u can add a blank file
you are a saint, plus now i came away with a new skill, manual mounting
ntfs doesnt support linux perms anyway, so that's taht
u can bookmark this ticket in web discord in browser to refer back to
i can add a blank file both on linux gui and on the windows share
yeah it's fine.. in case ntfs goes wonky after much use, do the chkdsk scan on Windows once a month or so
yea, how did you say i could bookmark the drives to the side of the filemanager again?
also check out the Youtube video " ExplainingComputers - Warpinator"
i will deffinitely
go in a folder, go to the menu bar 'bookmarks' item
oh just to favourites?
dont think i have a bookmark
or u drag the folder to a parkiing spot on the side under Pictures, Videos, etc
ah dragging worked!
good, and then warpinator another day, now i need sleep, thank you, i will mark it as solved!
kk goodnight sir
you too, when you eventually get to it
@autumn cove wtf just happend here.... will this continue happening?
did i get a bad drive? ive never had these issues with the other drive even tho its setup in the exact same way

i... i... i dont know if i trust this drive anymore
Dude I told you, though I didn't expect this early more corruption.. split the drive in half using gparted on linux, and make the tail half EXT4
u can even install an ext4 driver for Windows to be able to read it remotely
idk how to do any of that tho
im just so confused ive had the other drive in NTFS for like 3 years now connected to this machine running linux without a single issue, not 1 file ever corrupted on me, why is it specifically this drive?
maybe was old errors (the orphaned data)
hopefully, but i would like to try your idea, got gparted, but i cant resize it cause i assume i need to unmount it for that, which i cant do
do i go in fstab and comment this one so it does not mount on startup and then i do it?
have done
top right, pick exact disk
yup sdc2
then if there's a key or keyhole symbol on the pt'n, right click > unmount
and will i be able to read them just like this? and make changes? with the driver?
then r-click resize, shrink to half or whatever free space
i heard there are ext4 drivers
eg. if there's 1 TB of free space left , shrink it by 990 GB
yea cant unmount
why's that?
either comment out on fstab and reboot
or just reboot, but ensure plex doesnt autostsrt
i wanna make sure there is drivers before i do it
aight
there dont seem to be without 3rd party software...
that's what I meant
thats not exactly a driver
or see if Windows handles Btrfs
i would want it natively as windows like i do now with NTFS
no windows dont do that either
according to google
could've sworn it suppoets it now
i guess ill just have to roll the dice and see if it happens again, cause this time was different all the files werent lost they just got unindexed, i have put the external drive into another usb port plus another power plug, so if it happens again then i dont know
could also look into exFAT that works on both, though non-journalling. see if Linux supports good exFAT checking
what does journalling mean?
and i will look into it if it happens again, gonna keep a sharp eye on it the next couple weeks...
also maybe turn off file indexing in Windows
keeps some map of sector moves/deletes
meaning no recovering of lost data?
it is bullshit, and makes a huge database and everyone STILL says Windows file search is crap
better recovery on a journalled file system like ext3, ext4, btrfs
so turn this off?
yes
should i do that for everything on my windows pc or only the plex ones?
right okay imma cross my fingers, i dont know if i dare mess with the others so ill just keep them for now, also random question, its okay if you dont know
ask
but on my bulk storage drive on my main pc windows creates this program files folder every single time i can delete it, but it keep reappearing every time i reboot, can i get rid of it fully?
it has nothing in it like there is that folder and a folder below it thats empty, it never gets used tho it creates it anyway
probably a thing the games need
ive tried downloading games from windows store, and they still dont get used
they may load a tmp file there perhaps
and ive gone into windwos settings and said everything windows related downloads should go to C drive
its not filling up the drive which is good so its not harming me, just bugs me why it keep creating it
ive hidden files turned on cause i need it for other stuff so i would still see it and know it was there
oh
i mean its fine if its not filling up my drive then it can stay, just find it weird
yea thought so, i havent found one either, it was worse once it kept creating a windowsapps folder aswell, which it filled with windows store games and useless stuff, but after much weirdness with permissions and stuff i manged to remove it for good and force it to stay on C
nah this drive is only connected to my windows, have nothing to do with my plex server or drive
that was why i said it was unrelated
shrugs
oh well
hopefully the indexing was the issue, im gonna keep an eye on it but that check disk command sure came in handy i was about to throw in the towel, thought it had fully deleted my shows, but only thing that kept me trying was that it still reported the same gb used on the drive
oh it does, on both ends, unfortunately its a proprietary plug on the other end... so cant try another cable easily but they atleast fit securely
das good
yea im starting to think i should revisit the NAS i bought even tho i have no clue how to set it up... and NAS drives will be expensive, but it might be worth it purely for ease of mind
a nas is just a little computer with a LAN port and big hard drive.
just follow its manual for the basics on how to administer it .
yes i know, but then atleast i know its drives that support being on for 24/7 and also that its intended for what im using it for
i figured out how to get into the GUI of it easily enough its more the programs, networking and that kind of setup im unsure about
should be same Workgroup name as ur main Windows PC workgroup
and likely DHCP so router auto-assigns address
not that network i know the IP, i even made it myself, router stuff is one thing i taught myself, its like the different programs needs ports, but using docker makes that a bit of an issue to make the different programs sing together and be able to see eachother
idk anything about docker but just use Windows Explorer to "map network drive"
cause some of the apps the NAS supports directly, like plex, but some of the apps i also use in tandem with it, like the Radarr, Sonarr, Prowlarr and Overseerr has to be in a docker environment
map it to a drive letter, set that letter's root up as a public LAN share, and work ur way up
that is if i purely use it as storage, but i bought one that is powerfull enough to also run a plex instance for streaming both inside the home but also world wide whereever i am, it started initially that i wanted to watch shows in my bed, then evolved into this mess, i love all this server management, when it works that is xD
im sure u can learn day by dayy a bit at time with youtube tutorials, plus the manual table of contents
yea i could probably just use it as storage and plug it into my current little linux machine i have now and that was my backup if i could not get it up and running how i intended
but for now i cross my fingers and prey to whatever upper being exists out there
aight have fun
