#

so basically i was trying to get an ascii art for my neofetch and when i went to kate to paste it and save it as a file the background made out of transparent symbols became some weird boxes, same thing happened in nano and vim and i cant find a solution for my problem

#

basically the "⠀" symbol (yes there is a symbol there)

#

its the U+2800 symbol

crimson trellis
patent valve
#

like the command to install them

crimson trellis
#

idk whats the package in arch sorry

#

but most likely you need to install monospace fonts

#

and configure them in ur text editr/terminal

#

or DE

patent valve
#

the thing is i got monospace installed

patent valve
crimson trellis
patent valve
#

im in it now

crimson trellis
#

make sure proper monospace fonts are set

#

if its set

#

then check ur text editor/terminal

patent valve
#

i mean it looks like that

#

what font do i set

#

im using kde plasma

crimson trellis
#

hmm fixed width looks right

#

can you try noto mono?

patent valve
#

yeah

#

but which setting to change

#

the small font?

crimson trellis
#

fixed width

#

is the mono fonts

patent valve
#

oh alright

#

and apply the noto mono font?

crimson trellis
#

yeah try it

#

actually

#

can you send me the text file

#

lemme see if it works here

patent valve
#

alright

#

hmmmm i dont seem to have a noto mono font installed

crimson trellis
#

works fine for me

#

most likely it is indeed your font config

patent valve
#

is the fonts name noto sans mono?

crimson trellis
#

yes

patent valve
#

alright i set it

crimson trellis
#

alright see if its fixed

#

if not check ur font config in ur text editor

#

you can also try in ur terminal

#

cat /path/to/boykisser.txt/

#

if it views correctly in ur terminal

#

then its related to ur text editor app

patent valve
#

dosent view correctly in the terminal

crimson trellis
#

can u send screenshot?

patent valve
#

yes

crimson trellis
#

okay

patent valve
crimson trellis
#

try

#

sudo pacman -S noto-fonts noto-fonts-cjk noto-fonts-emoji

crimson trellis
patent valve
crimson trellis
#

you can also consult the archwiki

crimson trellis
#

hmm

patent valve
#

wait do i need to reboot after installing?

crimson trellis
#

no need

#

hold on

#

fc-cache -f -v

#

this should refresh ur font cache

#

try setting the fonts again

#

check the ktexteditor and konsole settings also

patent valve
#

after the command?

crimson trellis
#

anytime fonts are installed

patent valve
#

ok

crimson trellis
#

for good measure you can also log out and login

#

if it doesnt fix

#

check the encoding

patent valve
#

where do i check it

crimson trellis
#

tools > encoding > set to utf-8

patent valve
#

or where

crimson trellis
#

kate

patent valve
#

alright

#

nope, dosent work

crimson trellis
#

what the hell

patent valve
#

always me having some damn stupid linux problems

crimson trellis
#

why not use a justworks distro like ubuntu or mint?

#

arch is for tinkerers

patent valve
#

i wanted arch since i've heard it has good customization and has many cool things, i used debian before

crimson trellis
#

linux is linux

#

all distros are customizable

#

XD

patent valve
#

well damn i screwed up

crimson trellis
#

my ubuntu install looks unassuming but is heavily customized already

crimson trellis
#

just a simple font config thing

#

try to look here for ur issue

patent valve
#

but if it was so simple i would probably have it fixed by now

patent valve
crimson trellis
#

i found an entry for KDE

#

idk if this is the issue

#

but maybe it is it

#

Font alias
There are several font aliases which represent other fonts in order that applications may use similar fonts. The most common aliases are: serif for a font of the serif type (e.g. DejaVu Serif); sans-serif for a font of the sans-serif type (e.g. DejaVu Sans); and monospace for a monospaced font (e.g. DejaVu Sans Mono). However, the fonts which these aliases represent may vary and the relationship is often not shown in font management tools, such as those found in KDE and other desktop environments.

To reverse an alias and find which font it is representing, run:

$ fc-match monospace
DejaVuSansMono.ttf: "DejaVu Sans Mono" "Book"
In this case, DejaVuSansMono.ttf is the font represented by the monospace alias.

patent valve
#

but the kde link sends me to a part of archwiki about kde

crimson trellis
#

hmmm maybe here?

#

arch is really a tinkerer distro

#

you should know how to do this urself man if you wanna continue using arch, not saying cuz i think youre dumb but thats just how arch works!

patent valve
#

i am on the 6.6.2 entry of the kde thing

#

i cant seem to find my issue

crimson trellis
#

seems someone has exactly issue as you

#

also on arch

#

Edit: install dejavu-ttf package

#

this is the fix according to him?

#

try installing dejavu-ttf

patent valve
crimson trellis
#

kek

#

sudo pacman -S dejavu-ttf

#

like this man

#

when someone tells you to install something

#

on arch its pacman -S

patent valve
crimson trellis
#

hmm

patent valve
#

this is stupid

crimson trellis
#

yeah just go to mint or ubuntu man

#

arch really isnt very convenient

patent valve
#

i used mint before and then i switched to debian and now i ended up on arch

crimson trellis
#

ohhhhhh

patent valve
#

maybe do you think archcraft will work?

crimson trellis
#

what system locale youre using?

#

just type

#

locale

patent valve
#

LANG=en_US.UTF-8

crimson trellis
#

wtf

#

its set right

patent valve
#

i set it up manually when installing arch

crimson trellis
#

fonts are installed

#

locale is right

#

what the hell is the issue

patent valve
#

this is the whole output

crimson trellis
#

if you dont wanna give up on arch

#

you can wait for someone else

#

maybe they know

patent valve
#

alright then i think i'll wait

crimson trellis
#

hmmm

#

maybe try a different terminal

#

see if that works?

#

sudo pacman -S gnome-terminal

#

see if gnome terminal displays it right

#

just use cat to view the text file

#

if its still not right then surely its a system-wide thing

patent valve
#

gnome terminal displays it properly, i think its an issue with alacritty

#

and issue with kate

crimson trellis
#

works on gnome terminal for me

patent valve
#

for me too

crimson trellis
#

works now?

patent valve
#

also konsole dosent display it properly either

patent valve
crimson trellis
#

wtf lol

#

time to switch to gnome 👍

#

XD

patent valve
#

lol true

crimson trellis
#

hmm

#

okay

#

lemme download konsole

#

lets test this shit LOL

patent valve
#

also i used gnome when i was on debian

crimson trellis
#

hooooly shit

#

ill just use the flatpak lol

#

now we narrowed it

#

most likely a KDE issue

#

but lets see if konsole displays it right for me

patent valve
#

if its an kde issue it should work on i3

#

let me switch to i3 real quick

crimson trellis
#

it is definitely an issue with your KDE install

patent valve
#

Works on i3 no problem

crimson trellis
#

yeah def something wrong with ur kde

#

idk what it is

patent valve
#

I don't either

crimson trellis
patent valve
#

Well yeah must be something with kde

#

Maybe the way the fonts work there

crimson trellis
#

if you dont wann deal with it just use gnome or something

#

if you do wanna deal with it wait for someone else maybe they know a fix?

patent valve
#

Also how do I remove the gnome terminal

#

sudo pacman -r doesn't work

crimson trellis
#

uhhhh

#

i think capital R

patent valve
#

Alright I'll try

crimson trellis
#

idk its been 3 yrs since i used arch lol

patent valve
#

Alright capital r worked

crimson trellis
#

nice

patent valve
#

You know what

#

I'll try i3 again because i3 might have switched the terminals from konsole to the gnome terminal

crimson trellis
#

sure man

#

whatever works for you

#

should i mark as solved?

patent valve
#

No

crimson trellis
#

ok

patent valve
#

Turns out that it's a konsole issue

#

Because it doesn't display properly on konsole

crimson trellis
#

and kate

#

i added the appropriate tags

#

KDE and Software

patent valve
#

Maybe if I install gnome DE it will install some things and fix it

crimson trellis
#

idk man

#

xD

patent valve
#

I don't know sometimes Linux has some stupid issues

crimson trellis
#

Its not Linux, you are using a distro that is specifically designed for tinkerers

#

Sure, on the justworks distros issues can arise but usually just have to fix em once and you're all good to go

patent valve
#

But like why doesn't it work if it worked on debian

crimson trellis
#

Debian is justworks

patent valve
#

I can send a screenshot of my neofetch back when I was using debian

crimson trellis
#

Less justworks than mint and ubuntu
