#An absolute beginner, a fresh Mint install, and no bluetooth...

So I tried out Mint for a little bit (booted from a thumb drive) and wound up really liking it, so I decided to install it properly on a fresh hard drive I had laying around. Worked perfectly right out of the box, but as soon as I ran all the updates, my bluetooth headphones no longer worked. The other bluetooth related posts here aren't quite the same as mine so I was hoping you guys could help me lol

#

important notes:

  • bluetooth is enabled
  • when I attempt to connect to the headphones (they are visible), I get the error Connection Failed: br-connection-page-timeout
  • I fiddled with some bluetooth packages trying to figure this out and may or may not have lost track of which ones I fiddled with 💀
#

oh and here's this if it helps

finite hamlet
#

Are you dual booted with Windows?

sand tinsel
#

yeah

finite hamlet
sand tinsel
#

yep they work just fine over there

finite hamlet
#

The headphones are likely confused as it is looking at the Bluetooth chipset MAC and expecting the correct pairing code. What Windows version?

sand tinsel
#

windows 10

#

it's just weird to me bc it connected just fine before I updated

finite hamlet
#

If you know your way around Windows registry you could use regedit in Windows CurrentControlSet\Services\BTHPORT\Parameters\Keys

#

I think Windows uses the headphone MAC address first int he registry, then the adapters, the [linkkey] will have a 32 digit code

sand tinsel
#

ik this is annoying of me to say but I really don't see how this would fix it considering I was able to use my headphones just fine before I installed a bunch of updates in the update manager

#

if this were the first time I tried to use these headphones after installing mint then I'd understand but

finite hamlet
#

Delete the headphones from the Bluetooth Manager, put them in pairing mode and pair them again

sand tinsel
#

ah it's not even visible anymore

#

the headphones aren't appearing when I search, I mean

burnt ridge
#

red bar*?

sand tinsel
#

I think I might just reinstall mint and start from scratch, p sure I just messed something up along the way lol

burnt ridge
sand tinsel
finite hamlet
#

Put them in pairing mode and see if the search finds them

sand tinsel
#

I did

burnt ridge
#

I think I had something similar, it showed the same error message and wasn't able to pair, I unpaired the device, probably rebooted the pc etc.. and it worked again

sand tinsel
#

ig I could try rebooting again and see what happens

burnt ridge
# sand tinsel I did

Jeremy is an expert, he helped me install a Wifi and Bluetooth Adapter (via the instructions from github I was also able to install it on an arch based system later and share it with the guys from endeavour os)

soundcore life q30

#

also hey we're making a tiny bit of progress lol

burnt ridge
burnt ridge
sand tinsel
#

I get that notification immediately after clicking pair btw

burnt ridge
#

try this

sand tinsel
finite hamlet
#

I have Soundcore Space One headset and they don't like the dual boot

sand tinsel
#

I am 2 days old as far as my linux experience goes

burnt ridge
burnt ridge
sand tinsel
burnt ridge
#

sudo systemctl enable --now snapd

#

sudo snap install bluez

#

or alternatively try this:

#

sudo apt update
sudo apt install bluez

sand tinsel
#

I just get this whether I do sudo apt install bluez or sudo apt install snapd

#

sorry guys I'm just gonna revert to what I know worked, and that means a fresh install

#

fortunately I've barely done anything with this thing yet so it's not gonna hurt anything

#

thank you both for trying to help me

finite hamlet
sand tinsel
#

ah

burnt ridge
sand tinsel
#

what's up

burnt ridge
#

once finished

#

sudo apt update
sudo apt install blueman

reinstall it

#

sudo reboot

reboot and try to reconnect

sand tinsel
#

alright lemme boot back in lol

#

okay lets see if that did it, rebooting now

#

nope

burnt ridge
#

sudo apt install firmware-linux firmware-linux-nonfree

#

then this

sudo bluetoothctl

sand tinsel
#

says firmware-linux has no installation candidate

#

why is none of this stuff working, I know I havent touched anything that would do something like this

burnt ridge
#

sudo apt install linux-firmware

sand tinsel
#

says it's already the newest version

burnt ridge
#

awesome, continue here:

sudo bluetoothctl

sand tinsel
#

says agent registered

burnt ridge
#

power on

#

agent on
default-agent
scan on

type em one after another

#

after the hashtag*

sand tinsel
#

okay it says discovery started

burnt ridge
#

power on, then press enter etc, next one..etc..

sand tinsel
#

yeah I'm there now

burnt ridge
#

yes show me the snap of discovery

#

does it have one controller with number:bc:number....?

sand tinsel
burnt ridge
#

controller is the thing that allows you the bluetooth connection...usb wifi or pcie card whatever

#

one of the device things is the mac adress of your headset, possibly

#

scan off

burnt ridge
sand tinsel
#

done

burnt ridge
#

E8:EE:CC:96:29:2B

this could be your headset

sand tinsel
#

I mean

burnt ridge
#

info E8:EE:CC:96:29:2B

#

pair E8:EE:CC:96:29:2B

sand tinsel
#

okay so

#

it's technically paired

burnt ridge
#

then this

#

trust E8:EE:CC:96:29:2B
connect E8:EE:CC:96:29:2B

sand tinsel
#

it disconnected on its own while I was typing the trust command

#

it's also still not being seen as an audio device

burnt ridge
#

try again

sand tinsel
#

should I try rebooting?

#

oh okay

#

also when I did the connect command it paired and hasn't disconnected

burnt ridge
#

scan on

info E8:EE:CC:96:29:2B
pair E8:EE:CC:96:29:2B
trust E8:EE:CC:96:29:2B
connect E8:EE:CC:96:29:2B

one after another, depair the headset in the bluetooth manager before, in the interface where you usually connect it

burnt ridge
sand tinsel
burnt ridge
#

can you send me snap?

sand tinsel
#

of the terminal?

burnt ridge
#

yes

burnt ridge
sand tinsel
burnt ridge
finite hamlet
burnt ridge
#

I assume you don't have a pin or something like that with the headset?

sudo systemctl restart bluetooth

bluetoothctl
remove E8:EE:CC:96:29:2B

try those three

sand tinsel
#

idk how to get out of the bluetooth bit 💀

burnt ridge
#

exit

sand tinsel
#

ah

burnt ridge
#

but stay there

sand tinsel
#

well I had to so I could do that sudo command

#

okay the device has been removed

burnt ridge
sand tinsel
burnt ridge
sand tinsel
#

it just did the same thing

burnt ridge
#

journalctl -u bluetooth

#
  • snap
burnt ridge
#

I'll try to have a look in the meantime

finite hamlet
#

I just got my Soundcore Space One headset working on Mint and Windows 11 using a similar method

sand tinsel
burnt ridge
sand tinsel
#

starting to think linux stuff might just be a bit too difficult for me lol

finite hamlet
#

The easier way might be to get a Bluetooth dongle and not install drivers on Windows for it

burnt ridge
# sand tinsel

that means that it has some issues reconizing the hardware or better to say connecting with it

you could restart your bluetooth adapter, like reseting your phone with:

sudo hciconfig hci0 reset

#

This isn't a kernel issue, it is a dual boot issue that has been around for a while, the only solution is to copy the key from Windows registry and put it in /var/lib/bluetooth/????????/>>>>>>>/info

burnt ridge
# sand tinsel starting to think linux stuff might just be a bit too difficult for me lol

stick with linux it's an awesome OS, when I switched I did so, due to windows blue screens and I also didnt know a shit, I still now very little, but you need to read, research, try out. My advice, get yourself some linux books and turtorials, but stick with it, don't give up....there are those few things that cause frustration in the very beginnig. But once they are overcomed, you'll never go back to windows 😉

upper prawn
finite hamlet
#

Basically you have to boot into Windows and make sure it is paired and working, then open regedit as admin user. In regedit go to computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\controlset001\Services\BTHPORT\Parameters\keys and in this case sketchy should see dcdd24e0442a and select that then they should see e8eecc96292b and under the one column should be the pairing link that is 32 digits, write this down. Power off headset and boot into Linux, in terminal xed admin:///var/lib/bluetooth/DC:DD:24:E0:44:2A/E8:EE:CC:96:29:2B/info

#

Then there you find [LinkKey], just below you see Key= delete that 32 digit and enter the value from Windows using capital letters, save the file and reboot

sand tinsel
#

well I actually managed to find my own solution lol

#

idk which of these is the culprit but I just didn't install these this time around and it all works fine

#

@finite hamlet so it was what I thought. maybe the more specific issue is dual boot related but it's avoidable by not installing one/both of these

finite hamlet
#

Do the headphones work in Mint and Windows?

sand tinsel
#

yeah it's working perfectly

#

watching youtube as we speak lol

finite hamlet
#

It usually takes more than that.

sand tinsel
#

not gonna look this gift horse in the mouth though

finite hamlet
# sand tinsel yeah I can tell I got kinda lucky with this one

I have an odd setup, one Mini PC with Mint and another with Windows 11, both share keyboard, video, mouse, and bluetooth using a KVM switch and I posted what I had to do for consistent results. I did it a few months ago for some Bluetooth earbuds and again today for my Space One headset

sand tinsel
#

sounds like a hassle lol

#

also I did in fact narrow it down to bluez, pulseaudio is working fine

finite hamlet
#

I haven't seen a lot of bluetooth issues on the forums I am on recently

sand tinsel
#

guess I'm just special like that lol

sand tinsel
#

@finite hamlet sooooo bit of a problem I didn't know existed until now

#

when I'm on windows, my headphones start stuttering REALLY bad after a few minutes

#

could be the dual boot thing you've been talking about this entire time, could be the fact that we were fiddling with drivers, idk

#

either way I have NO idea how to fix it and it really sucks

finite hamlet
sand tinsel
#

ughhhhhh

#

okay, thanks anyway lol

finite hamlet
#

I don't use Windows that much. I would be surprised that it would work better in Linux

sand tinsel
#

tbf I've noticed on occasion on linux that my headphones will stutter over there a bit too and then get bitcrushed for a few seconds, but it's nowhere near as bad

finite hamlet
sand tinsel
#

idk, nobody in the house has started using any new devices that could be doing that

#

only new thing is working out the bluetooth package stuff

finite hamlet
gleaming zealot
#

@sand tinsel there is a command line tool called bluetoothctl i believe

#

you can scan for devices etc

#

it can be a little tempermental

#

basically though the gui mint comes with for this is basically bluetoothctl but user friendly

sand tinsel
#

yeah the problem isn't getting the headphones to connect anymore, I'm just using this thread bc it's sort of an evolution of the situation from before

gleaming zealot
#

it can also depend on the wifi card you have and how good/bad its bluetooth module is

#

what is the current issue?

sand tinsel
#

headphones are starting to have some major stuttering on both windows and mint (they're dualbooted)

#

but they work fine with my phone

gleaming zealot
#

i dont think dualbooting would cause this problem

sand tinsel
#

yeah ik just mentioned it for transparency

gleaming zealot
#

it sounds like a bad wifi card

sand tinsel
#

point is after getting it working on one it's started stuttering on the other

sand tinsel
gleaming zealot
#

what wifi card do you have

#

on mint can you run lspci | grep -i wireless

#

and send the output

sand tinsel
#

Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless-AC 3168

#

I'm on windows atm but I found it lol

finite hamlet
#

Windows Device Manager?

sand tinsel
finite hamlet
#

I imagine that is where you found it

sand tinsel
#

actually no but I'm sure that would work too

gleaming zealot
#

ok so its an intel wifi card, those are generally well supported

#

hm i mean im seeing a few posts online about bluetooth issues with that specific card

finite hamlet
sand tinsel
#

something to note: it's not just a matter of it stuttering, it's very clearly a reception type of thing bc it gets way worse the further I am

gleaming zealot
#

on windows, through driver manager, can you try clicking update drivers for the wireless card

sand tinsel
#

but I'm sitting about 3-4 feet away and it's doing this

gleaming zealot
sand tinsel
finite hamlet
sand tinsel
#

bc I was unplugging a thumbdrive just before I started messing with mint and just the act of doing that made my computer completely shut off

#

I think there's a short back there

gleaming zealot
#

what was on the thumb drive, the mint iso?

sand tinsel
#

so the files are unrelated

gleaming zealot
sand tinsel
#

it was either a bad drive and it botched something back there or the port was bad already, idk

gleaming zealot
#

that would indicate an issue with the motherboard tho

sand tinsel
#

I'm leaning toward it being the drive though

sand tinsel
gleaming zealot
#

is this a laptop or pc

sand tinsel
#

pc

gleaming zealot
#

i would try buying a drop in replacement card

#

i cant recommend any because i dont know anything about good/bad ones but do some research and get one that generally seems to get good reviews and if you wanna use linux make sure the drivers for linux exist and are decent

#

intel cards tend to be very good

sand tinsel
#

yeah worth a shot, gonna be a while though bc I dont have a lot of money

gleaming zealot
#

understandable, even one of those cheap bluetooth or wifi dongles would do the trick if they work out cheaper

sand tinsel
#

oh actually I have an unrelated QoL question but I think I'll make a new thread for that or something

#

think I'll go ahead and close this one

gleaming zealot
#

nah go for it in here

sand tinsel
#

oop okay

#

so I have a three monitor setup and mint seems to hate it

#

is there anything out there that can help mediate that a bit

#

I'm talking panels snapping to the wrong screens, linux getting confused about where I want the screens layed out, etc

gleaming zealot
#

so you can set up profiles that load when it detects a certain configuration of monitors connected to the pc

#

yeah its not well set up by default but thats the case on most systems anyway, i used to run 3 monitors you just have to deal with the out of sync pain until you can navigate to the display settings

#

then there should be an option to show numbers on monitors as to mark them

#

then you can drag them around and set the primary monitor as you wish or whatever

#

once its all configured nicely just set up a profile and it should load it automatically on startup

#

it is pretty much the same process as on windows

sand tinsel
#

yeah I mean I have the primary monitor and layout set how I want, but like, for instance when I click a spot I want a panel to move to, it just snaps to a totally different screen

#

like if I click the bottom of my left monitor, it goes to the bottom of my right monitor

sand tinsel
#

@gleaming zealot I just realized an old issue I've been having with my aux ports not sending sound to my wired headphones is happening here on mint too so I do believe my motherboard is officially going bad

upper prawn
#

Do you live in us, if so you can get a wifi/bluetooth card for 20 bucks

#

Your motherboard wont go bad, sometimes with wifi cards theres two little wires that pop on. You should check and see if they are connected

sand tinsel
upper prawn
#

what else is messed up im not reading 300+ messages

sand tinsel
#
  • certain devices have to be unplugged/re-plugged every nth amount of time
  • bluetooth reception got way worse
  • plugging a thumb drive in the back of the pc just straight up turns it all off
  • aux ports communicate with the rest of the pc just fine but no actual sound is being sent to any audio devices
  • probably some other tiny things I haven't thought much about lol
upper prawn
#

have you perhaps updated your bios

#

I had that happening on a lga1200 motherboard and it fixed itself

sand tinsel
#

not in a good while but I haven't done anything whatsoever that would have made all of this start happening

upper prawn
#

What motherboard

sand tinsel
#

ASRock B450M/AC

#

I've been using it since about early 2020

upper prawn
#

cant speak for its other issues but perhaps the wifi NIC is just dying if this is the correct motherboard

sand tinsel
#

I dont see how that would affect the thumb drive/aux issues

upper prawn
#

if I were you I would give a bios update a try. is there any "exposed" metal in your case that could be shorting out the pins on the back?

sand tinsel
#

not as far as I can tell

upper prawn
#

if you have a laptop you dont use, you could put the wifi card in the m.2 slot and see if the issues persist with using it, dont know about the other issues

sand tinsel
#

the wifi is built into the motherboard

#

that's this part right here

upper prawn
#

I know, but im pretty sure you have a slot for it, so tis possible to try a different card

sand tinsel
#

I don't think I see what you're seeing

#

I just see an m.2 slot

#

oh

#

ignore me I have the reading comprehension of a twig lmao

upper prawn
#

You also have the 2x16 slot which you can put any x1 card in

#

unless your using it for dual gpu or some shit

sand tinsel
#

nah just the one lol

#

I'm assuming that's the second PCIE slot?

#

sorry I'm not great with pc harware stuff

upper prawn
#

Yes, you can put a wifi card in that

#

usually if they come with bluetooth there is a little wire that you plug into the usb 2.0 port

sand tinsel
#

I still dont see what a wifi card would have to do with the other issues though

upper prawn
upper prawn
sand tinsel
#

back IO

upper prawn
#

is the audio port thats messed up also at the rear IO?

#

or is it at the front of your case plugged into hdaudio1

sand tinsel
#

every audio port works fine except for the fact that they all dont send sound to my audio devices

#

back IO and front

#

pc sees my devices when I plug them in, sound settings see them as actual audio devices, etc etc

upper prawn
#

did you build your computer or prebuilt

#

also does your motherboard have a warranty

sand tinsel
#

built myself, it's been working fine for years so I definitely didn't do anything wrong lol

sand tinsel
upper prawn
#

has this been happening since you built it or new issues

sand tinsel
upper prawn
#

id give it a bios update although reading through what the versions change nothing mentions your issues. sorry I couldnt help you

sand tinsel
#

I mean I'm pretty confident it's the motherboard tbh, the thumb drive bit all but confirmed it for me lol

upper prawn
#

yeah thats weird

#

did all the issues pop up at the same time or nah

sand tinsel
#

but thank you for trying, it's nice to be reminded there are ppl out there that aren't jerks for the fun of it yknow

sand tinsel
