#system keeps “requesting an ethernet network address” indefinitely, unable to get the network across
164 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
network card on the pc with the Wifi likely needs a static ipv4 manual address and subnet
thats so strange, it was working fine yesterday tho
the slave computer needs the same, but the last IP digit different, same mask, and its default gateway should have the IP address of thr master pc
i mean me passing the wifi thru the eithernet cable into the linux macbine
so how can i fix it?
network settings
in the windows machine or
on both. edit connections or make anew
see ur wifi setting in linux for example
then click add
on windows just switch ipv4 on with toggle shown to get an example
this is what happens when i do ipv4
or search "internet connection sharing in windows"
i hit add but i have no clue what im doing
i already have this enabled for the ethernet connection
in such case above set the linux box to same ip as windows one except last digit differnt
same mask
prefix 9 aka 255 255 255 0
default gateway equal to the windows ip address above
okay, i’m gonna try rummaging around and give it a go holdon
i cant hit save
@tawny cosmos
how do i do that?
dns just put 1.1.1.1
set it to the windows pc adress?
is the adress fine btw? i think i need to add 1 more octet
this worked! does it matter?
1.77 then on the windows manual IP identifier
wait why? it works now tho, i have ethernet working
mkay
does it matter?
wait
holdon, i’m gonna try doing a google search
keeps buffering
i can’t seem to even open youtube on firefox
“server not found”
@tawny cosmos
sudo apr get update doesn’t even work properly
it wasnt right
make like this
supposed to have 4 octets and 3 dots
like this?
in adresses or gatewya
so 192.168.1.77?
change it to what
and fix to this for the linux pc's own private ip address (1st column)
good. check ethernet tab
. on linux
oh
what do you want me to do here?
i hit some of the drop down menus and selected these, they didn’t work but this is all that is there rn
check it if anything looks amiss. also ensure from the system tray network manager that it is on the new manual connection u just made in linux. finally go to the windows pc, test for internet connectivity functionality there, and that sharing is enable and bound to do so via the lan port
nothing is working :(
i was originally trying to set up a USB wifi adapter and i guess it somehow broke my linux machines DHCP?
trying to get ethernet back cuz apparently i need drivers for it
no cuz usb just treats it as a streaming i/o device, pretty sure
inxi -N will inform u about drivers for ur NIC
alright holdon
says N/A
not applicable or wtv
this whole mumbo jumbo came from trying to get it to work, the usb
the usb one, correct. ur intel lan card has them just fine
plugging the usb in does nothing unfortunately
so how do i get the wifi to work then if my ethernet is broken
did it ever?
yeah? i saw people using the same one im using rn
asked if i could use it to set this machine up
what's ur distro and current kernel? inxi -Fxxxz
just missed it
oh
scroll up and type it, distro and kernel
there is a chance the non long-term latest kernel might support the usb dongle
can u connect the pc to the router port? (use automatic connection insuch case)
then see in Update manager
no i gotta carry it all the way down stairs :/
go to view and kernels
it's a one time thing. then reboot, it should load the 6.5 kernel for u
n then test the usb dongle
i gotta unplug everything then, holdon :/
else wait for more help here on setting up bridged ethernet share
or if u have a 2nd old unused Wifi router to do the above ^^
i brought everything
down
connect to a spare port
it says my system is up to date
test first that u have connectivity
i do
.
what is view
in update manager menu bar
6.5 okok
installing it now
damn my ahh really gotta sit here and wait
bruh
@tawny cosmos what do i do when its done?
reboot?
yes
how can i check if it works now?
then confirm it is running, uname -r
after confirming its running the 6-series kernel, plug in the wifi dongle, wait 10 seconds
then check systray for network options
or do inxi -N
good u may disconnect the cable
wait so explain why i had to switch “kernels”?
it's the heart of linux. ur dongle runs 'ac' aka wifi 6 which is rather new
ah okay
i also saw the kernel will stop being supported of agust of this year? is getting a new kernel like getting a windows update?
or windows 10 to windows 11
it's still gonna work, just by then they'll have made a higher version
leave it if all works fine and there's no news of a massive threat of that kernel after august (or before)
that kernel being the one im on rn or the new one that will release soon
i meant stay on whatever ur on now 6.xx.xx
oh so i made a big leap from 5.xx.xx to 6.xx.xx?
what do the numbers after the first number mean?
minor and ultra minor revisions
though ultra minor revisions sometimes screw stuff up
ah okay, so there’s no need to change to those super new revisions unless necessary?
exactly right
how do i remove the old kernal? im still getting updates for it in my update manager
keep it around just incase.. always keep one last known-working (in ur case mostly-working kernel around) and ignore the update manager suggestions on the kernel updates
you may review the updateable list of stuff it presents and uncheck things
bet, tysm fam ur da best
