First of all, this laptop does not have a working internal hard drive, so I am using a portable usb hard drive, when I first tried to boot into the boot drive I had, it said Failed to open \EFI\BOOT\mmx64.efi A blog post online told me to change the name of a file, and disable secure boot in BiOS. I did those steps and was able to boot into the mint screen before downloading, I click install Linux Mint go through the process of downloading, then I check Install Multimedia Codecs and hit continue and it "loads" for an hour, I quit, restart, and go back through, and install again this time diabling the installing codecs box and it is hanging still right now, I do not know what to do.

For some reason, after 3 and a half hours, something finally happens
Glad you got it working 💪
well not really
It’s stuck on this now
But I may just have to wait 3 and hours hours again
yes
Thanks for the support
I clicked continue when it said Chicago
Maybe do a restart and head into boot menu and try install Mint again
then it'll get stuck on install mm codecs
ok it continued to the Who are you screen
Install the multimedia codecs and click yes
I'm probably good for the rest of the install
aand the installer crashed
u must connect the computer to internet either ethernet wired, or Wifi , before running the installer; for the installer to do the codecs thing successfully
for reference a typical install takes only 10 to 20 minutes to finish.
Installing to an external drive? Sounds like that thing is dog-slow. Even if you get it installed, it will not be pleasant to run off that. Consider getting a better one, or find out why it is so slow. Bad cable perhaps?
I had an Ethernet cable running, I ran it again last night, it finished. The computer isn’t too incredibly slow but now I’m wondering if I transfer all the files on the hard drive to an ssd or something
