however, my installed games don't seem to appear in Linux. is that the correct way to do it?

Did you got to Steam Settings > Storage and selected add drive? If not, the only library you have is the default one it creates inside your /home.
it actually did use the second drive (this is why i was so confused) i added a library with a path to /windows/programfiles/steam/ and now it works (the default one was just /windows/steam)
