#Cannot Pin Applications Downloaded from Websites to Taskbar.

Alright, Cinnamon is being a bit weird with it. It works if you do this:
- right-click on desktop,
Create a new launcher here - enter a name, browse for the file, select
- click on the symbol and choose a picture you want it to show
- when it prompts if you want to create a launcher in menu as well, say yes
- in menu, right click that launcher,
Add to panel
For some reason, you cannot just drag and drop the launcher from the desktop.
isn't godot avaliable on mint repos/software manager/flatpak?
because mint isn't windowz and getting stuff off the web is a bad habit
It probably is, but with these things, you are getting old versions.
they are using xfce
flatpak should give a newer version tho
Sorry! I didn't know. But i get updates versions of godot on the website
that's not how it works
that's why package managers exist
just did a flatpak search and these are the avaliable versions
You do not need to be sorry. It is just that you can leave the drudgery to the OS. On Mint, we are on an old package base, so you mostly likely will not get that current version there. Flatpak is a package alternative that usually comes with newer versions, and participates in updates.
yeah, but they take up to much space. Godot download size is literally < 70 MB on the website. But on flatpack or apt, it is more than 1 GB
don't think so
also get used to package managers
is the godot you want on my shot?
It is Linux, you are free to do what you want with it. If you prefer the download version, go ahead. Just keep in mind that this one will not update unless you manually download the new version.
flatpak may download some shared libraries then godot itself, that's why
this is why you should let apt and flatpak manage the apps
Why is downloading from the web considered a bad practice? It's nothing harmful. I am downloading from the official website
no need to go to a website over and over, just let your system update
because bad actors can hijack websites, plus, it's not convenient
package managers exist for a reason
same with software stores
so, if I download something from the web, I cannot pin it to the taskbar or dock
Technically, it carries the risk of being tricked into downloading malware. So you would need to always compare checksums to be sure. It is a valid way to get software, but most people prefer package managers for the automated checking and trust levels.
oh! Got it
that's a side effect
Yes, you can. The method I described works on Cinnamon, it might be slightly different on Xfce.
The APT system still has Godot 3 on the repository right now, so you either use Flatpak or the direct download as you did.
I want Godot 4.2.2. The latest version, as available of their website
just checked the zip the website gives.
and no, you can't pin it, as it's something that runs similar to appimages. also I wouldn't give executable perms to a random app
Oh! So using Software Store is a must
It is recommended to go through the repositories. If you go to a website, it is your burden to verify that you are on the correct one and get a clean package.
this is how it looks here, so yes.
forget about giving it executable perms
it could be potentially malware
okay
use flatpak
okay. But why? Why not apt?
then because it will install it as a user app, you should be able to pin it
apt may have older versions of it
did you even saw my flatpak search shot?
Thanks 🙂
flatpak offers 4.2.2
which is the same version from the website
Okay then. Flatpack then
you can just open the software manager and look for godot
it will install it from flatpak
then you just run it and pin it
I'll go and install it
btw get your id:customize
then let us know if it works
using mint software manager is ez
no need for terminal unless you really need it
I just use terminal because convenient and used to it
okay then
Using terminal to install something is an easy way to make people think you are a hacker.
Why is the download size so much bigger than the download size on website?
Flatpak does not just install the application, but its entire dependency set and some additional required libraries. This makes sure it will always have all the resources it needs, in the versions it needs.
It is basically a very small virtual machine.
oh! So, it will update it automatically?
Yes. Mint Update Manager will update them along with all the other packages.
Which command will I have to run?
There should be a shield symbol on your system tray. When that changes, it means to tell you there are updates available. You can also just start Update Manager from the start menu.
oh got it? Currently that shield icon has a tick mark on it? I just updated it this morning? BTW It asks me if I want to switch to local mirrors cuz they are faster. I have no idea what mirrors are. Can you tell me what they are and should I switch to local mirrors or not?
none, it has a GUI to update
oh!
mint will show a window asking for updates then click update
it will ask for your admin password then
You should switch to a local mirror. The repository system that holds the updates is organised as a fleet of servers across the world that mirror the exact same software selection. The default is in the US, but there are probably mirrors closer to you.
so get godot and try to pin it
yeah, I am installing it
should work as I have some flatpak apps and I have those pinned but to my dock
#1233597030828347402 shows my desktop for reference
With flatpaks, you may also want to install flatseal to decide how the flatpak application can interact with the rest of the system.
get flatseal btw so it makes ez managing flatpak
@ionic reef you may like to check warehouse
what's that?
warehouse helps to add/remove flatpak apps
Good to know, never heard of it before.
also check gearlevel
tho gearlevel is meant for appimages
I am actually not using many flatpaks. Now that I think of it, probably only two or three that I could not even name right now.
but good to know about it
a flatpak permission manager
okay. But I have the software manager. It is easy too
flatseal doesn't install apps, it only manages permissions. software manager is to get more apps
flatpak apps are sandboxed/isolated from your system
@ionic reef may explain about flatpaks
yeah. But I have all the apps I need. Gimp latest version pinned to the dock. Blender latest version pinned to the dock. Godot is installing. Now only I need to learn Godot, 2D and 3D art. I have plenty of time cuz I'm 16 years old
flatseal is a must among warehouse. those will make managing flatpaks ez
yeah
flatpak will make your life ez on mint
tip: if you need more repositories outside mint and flatpak, you can use distrobox to get arch repos
that's more advanced, but good to share in case you need something not avaliable on mint or flatpak
but arch is not for me. It's too hardcore
distrobox makes arch run inside your mint system
oh
proof
arch literally running inside mint
But mint is fine for now. I just started using Linux like a week ago. Went with Ubuntu, but it was bloat. And had snaps. So, Mint is perfect for me:

That system is not low-end. It is a perfectly fine quadcore with a decent iGPU and superfluous small dGPU.
yes, but just letting you know that you can get almost any app beyond what mint can offer to you by having arch distrobox if ever needed
but for now flatpak will do
you may ask us how to distrobox when needed
🙂
I even ran opensuse inside my arch laptop once
You know after Ubuntu, I went with Fedora 40 KDE (released just a couple days ago). But installing NVIDIA was so hard, I quit. Once I had installed NVIDIA on it, it wouldn't even boot. Installing NVIDIA on Ubuntu and Linux Mint was a breeze
anyways, does godot works? can you pin it?
Internet is trash right now. It is installing still
I'll let you know
did you switch to local mirrors on mint?
not yet
you have to
or your download will be slow
