Iāve only used Windows my whole life but I decided I wanted to use Mint, but itās seemingly unbootable normally and compatibility mode does this half of the time??? It seems to go on forever. I should note Iām duel-booting with Windows 10, any other info you may need let me know because Iām not really confident in my Linux abilities

nvidia?
That's why
Welcome to the club!
for me, I have to use recovery mode
until I instal the nvidia drivers
I did get the driver via the driver thing in Mint, though Iāve been using a specific one, I could try the other ones maybe?
nouveao?
No, the proprietary one
545
and u installed all updates and latest kernel?
I installed all updates, though just to be clear where would I install the latest kernel?
i think its auto wit the updates, but u can check Update Manager > View > Kernels
6.5.0-28 is current
I am also using 550 nvidia drivers
https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.com/p/nvidia.html
^I used this guide to install them
Iāll try this
thats an old one I think
i would do ur kernel 1st
then reboot, and remove ur old kernel
u will also need to reboot after u purge nvidia drivers
just remember to use Advanced > Recovery after that reboot, when u get options after starting recovery, just pick the top option and press enter on the next prompt
I've only been using Mint for a little over a week now, and trust me, if u can manage to stick with it, its far superior to windows š
and btw, I am pretty sure you are using an old Mint install ISO, 5.15.....im sure the current one for download is way newer than that
Yeah, Iāve been enjoying most stuff in relation to it, thatās why Iāve been wanting it to work so bad lmao
Linux Mint is an elegant, easy to use, up to date and comfortable desktop operating system.
I canāt fully commit to Linux unless I know itās all working, hence why Iām currently duel-booting
ye I was dual booting myself, mainly due to me waiting for Wrath of the Lich King to end š but I even managed to get wow working now
it's a bit more involved, have to use Lutris/Wine instead of Steam, Steam games just seem to work
wow actually seems to work a lot better than it did in Windows, get like 100fps (monitors refresh rate vsync) in Dalaran at peak times š
on windows it usually dipped in to the 80's
Iāve played games via Linux on my Steam Deck and that seems to work well, so Iām hoping itāll be somewhat similar in Linux?
I mean Linux on my PC
I think so, nvr played on a deck
but so far all the steam games I have tried work fine, if not better than they used too
even Doom Eternal in RT mode works flawlessly
Cinnamon (Edge ISO) Edition is the ISO I linked btw, its a bit more geared to us nvidia plebs
I only tried one game in Linux PC so far and weirdly it had less issues than it has in Windows, I guess Linuxās legacy Windows stuff is better than Windowsā???
probably
The only game I had issues with on my Deck was Spore, and even then I got it working after a bit
Iām downloading the new ISO right now by the way
And Minecraft Dungeons but thatās only because of the launcher not running
I've tried these games so far, and they have been awesome on mint
and wow wotlk classic
When I try out some of my favourites on Mint Iāll let you know how it goes, havenāt really had the chance due to this issue unfortunately
modding bg3 tho, was a bit beyond my skills
but theyre adding it to workshop soon(tm)
The closest Iāve done to modding in Linux was finding the fake C drive to get my Spore creatures and put my custom BattleBlock Theater head in the customheads folder
Heck thatās probably the closest to modding Iāve done ever lmao
well i've got installing Mint down to a T now, think ive done it 5 times so far.....
so if ur doing it tonight i can help if possible
I believe Iām just gonna do it whenever this ISO is done downloading
Says about 30 seconds
sweet, u on mobile?
Yeah
Yep
balenaEtcher was what I was told
ye, etcher didnt work for me, maybe cos I debloated windows too heavily
had to use rufus, but etcher is fine
u installing to new drive or a partition?
cool, ppl say dont, but i install to / and /home to a seperate partition
probs wont matter tho, if ur gonna eventually main Mint, u will probably start over
Switching to Linux entirely is the long-term goal, Iāve already only begrudgingly put up with 10 and Windows 11 was my tipping point
ye, the whole making customisation software difficult to install was my tipping point
Itās been so nice being able to mess with the look and feel on a dime
all the news about 24H2 is also pretty bad
Like I can edit my folder colours and stuff to match my wallpaper
ye, im thoroughly impressed with mint
anything I think of, there is probbaly some free software for it š
Yeah, one of the first things I tried in Mint was looking for a YouTube Video Downloader and sure enough one is on the store
ye
Do I need to wipe my SSD before installing the new Mint version?
I would
Alright
I would also partition it, u can keep ur /home for later, will save time when u install again, if u need to
Mint only need 50GB, 100GB is plenty
How do I do that?
when u get to the HDD section, select "Something Else"
make sure you have your Linux drive selected, and then highlight a partition on it and click the - button to remove it, when the drive is only free space, use the + to make a partition
how big is it?
The SSD is 2 terabytes
sweet
when u press + enter 102400 in the size field, thats 100GB
it will ask u what to do with it
Select ext4 as filesystem
and mount it as /
then in the free space use whatever is left, and ext4 again and this time mount as /home
tldr, did you disabled secure boot, tpm and fast boot on BIOS?
also disable fast startup on windowz power settings
as that may give issues
ye I disabled secure mode, cos nvidia drivers i think dont like them, and ye, i disabled fast boot
oh, i thought Doger was asking me about secure mode
Installing this new version of Mint now
so the partitions done?
ah
Itās taking a minute because compatibility mode is checking tons of stuff or something
I dunno itās moving too fast to read
i rly hate how small of a window Mint gives u when it comes to setting up the partitions, just be careful what u clicking on
and ye, i have to use compat mode to install too
otherwise it hangs and a blank screen
Yeah, noticed that on my first go-through
Itāll probably take a bit to finish this but Iāll let you know when itās done
What is a flatpak? I did see those referenced in the store but Iām not very knowledgable on Linux
Or the software manager I think itās called
when u use Software Manager, u will see a lot of them, they like containers for that app to use, i tried Steam flatpak, and it was a nightmare, removed it and used the normal version and its been fine š
I see, Iāll keep that in mind whenever I get everything up and running
AppImages are awesome, I used my 1st one today, for WoWup (addon manager), its like a portable .exe š
Oh, thatās interesting
My Linux knowledge is like, zero to be honest, I decided to get Linux on a dime and chose Mint just cuz it looked nice
I am in the same boat, but I tried debian 12 first
Did you not like Debian?
I mean it felt good, but I couldnt get PoE to work, and after 2 days of tinkering i gave up and tried mint
and once I sorted nvidia drivers, PoE worked 1st try
Well it was less just because it looked nice and more because I heard itās one of the better ones for Windows users switching over and thatās how Iāve noticed it as well, itās got the stuff I like about Windows without all of the Microsoft
I see
ye, Mint and Pop_OS! are meant to be the easiest distro's for ppl like us
Never heard of Pop_OS!, whatās that one like?
I think my prob with debian was mainly due to nvidia, and I might have tried the wrong ISO, I went with the netinst_testing version, so it was probbaly missing a lot of pkgs I needed
not tried Pop, I just hear a lot of people saying its like Mint in regards to user friendly
there is another one now I hear a lot about called Bazzite, I think its Arch based but is meant to be really good for gaming
I have heard of Bazzite, but I know only like, a bit about it
I have Nvidia and Intel which from what I gather usually arenāt what you want for Linux??? Though I am not actually sure of anything
ye I dont know much about it either, and tbh I think ima stick with Mint for a good few months
I plan on sticking with Mint as my main OS assuming I can get it working
same, I am on a 12600K MSI Tomahawk Z790 and a 4070ti Super
I have an MSI motherboard but I canāt recall exactly what model? I have it written down somewhere so I could check
Intel i9 12th gen as well
I dont think CPU is an issue tho, its mainly nvidia cos the drivers arnt open source
Yeah, itās the only one that shows up in the drivers app
Iāve just heard AMD plays nicer with some versions of Linux
AMD drivers are baked in to the linux kernel
Maybe Iād have chosen AMD when I built my computer if I knew I was going to switch to Linux whoops
yep, i bought my pc upgrades like a month ago, if id of known.....
upgraded from a i9 7900X x299 EVGA Dark 2080ti š
was a beast when i built it 4yrs ago
I had only used random laptops before and I had a job at the time so I decided to put all of my money into a computer thatās like, a bit overboard
current setup laughs at it tho
Was a bit expensive but no regrets
ye, thats exactly where I was 4yrs ago, probs why i nvr upgraded for so long
read #762787812184555530
how's the install going btw?
I did, my issue wasnāt on there
tldr what are you doing rn
is this after doing compat mode?
Yeah
k, hopefully wont b long then
tldr installing mint for 1st time?
technically its 2nd or 3rd time :p
when installing mint, use ventoy
No, I was having an issue with journal so Iām reinstalling
Got it
use ventoy to make the USB
I used Etcher, is that fine?
id only use ventoy if u want to have a USB with multiple Distro's on a install drive
I think Iām realising this is a repeating error
Should I restart?
I made a Ventoy, put like 8 diff distro's on it, inc gparted, and ive only used it twice š
u deffo selected Compatibility mode?
I believe so, but I guess it wouldnāt hurt to restart it?
u could try sure, if its deffo repeating errors
should work too, be sure to verify your iso. btw you may like to use mint edge iso
is your PC too new?
he is using edge, thats the iso i told him to download
then try with ventoy
Iām a girl
and do verify mint iso
girls dont use the internet!
I actually use it too much
my, you offend me
š®
Anyway maybe Iāll try ventoy? Iām getting a PCIE error like over and over again
chuckles
try with it ~~
wwwwwww
ventoy is super easy, u just use it to make the USB drive and then u can just copy ISO's on to it
uh... what system are you using right now?

intel/nvidia
distro
edge

If you mean the OS Iām using for installation, itās Windows 10
then use ventoy from there
I did also have issues with etcher, I ended up having to use Rufus until I found out about ventoy
should ye, altho it doesnt like the debian ISO I tried with it, said something about being unable to mount install media
1.0.97-windows.zip ?
Yeah
Apparently thereās work being done on the site so maybe thatās why
It said some services would be unavailable
I guess Iāll just try Etcher one more time
no no
What do you suggest?
try rufus https://rufus.ie/en/
Rufus: Create bootable USB drives the easy way
Alright
use 4.4p.exe
just set the device to ur usb, select the edge iso u downloaded earlier, and click start, dont need to change any settings
Got it
why
rufus likes to break how mint boots
Itās my only option currently
wdym
worked for me, when etcher didnt
Itās just not downloading
Like I press the install, it goes to the screen, but it doesnāt do anything
Alright let me try that then
extract, run ventoy2disk.exe as admin then setup it like this
Got it
copy the edge iso to the USB
what pain said
then reboot
Normal mode or grub2?
u still need compatibility mode
Iām guessing normal but with how long Iāve been working on this I am not taking a single chance lmao
At this part, before the install
ah normal
Got it
u should then get a list of ISO's
Just pick the one u have on there, but ye, u still need to use compatibility mode from there
it working?
Iām still getting this weird PCIE port error
I found a thing to help but I canāt boot into compatibility mode with boot options
Unless there is a way to do that Iām unaware of
So Iām stuck between errors because of a weird PCIE issue and errors because Iām not in compatibility mode
when the ISO loads, doesnt it give u a menu?
Ok, so the ISO loads, and u go to advanced? or is compat the 2nd option?
Itās the second option
ok, but then u get PCIE errors
and ur sure uve disabled secure boot?
I believe so but Iāll double check
I hate MSI's BIOS layout, but for me i think it was somewhere in the security menu
Itās disabled
ur using a K scew intel right?
A what
12900K ?
Yes
u could try disabling the IGP
Where do I do that
Usually it's under BIOS\Settings\Advanced\Integrated graphics configuration\set IGD multi-montior to disable
Got it disabled, Iāll see if it helps
ok, fingers crossed š
It didnāt, but Iām noticing the error only happens in compatibility mode???
Though regular mode has the journal error
So Iām between a rock and a hard place here
you could try the normal cinnamon iso next, maybe edge isnt the way to go
Linux Mint is an elegant, easy to use, up to date and comfortable desktop operating system.
Oh same link lmao
nah its lsightly diff link
Oh I see
Might be a minute since Iāve gotta install the ISO and then re-flash it and such
Oh, I see
u will just have another iso to pick when u boot up next time
About 3 minutes to install the ISO
nice, thank god dialup internet is a thing of the past
Everywhere except internet archive evidentially lmao
One time I tried downloading a version of MacOS and it literally took 12 hours-
ouch
i remember when I went from 56k to ISDN.....was massive back then lol
and thank christ for bittorrent š
Alright, itās done downloading, letās see if itāll actually work this time
hpe so cos im running out of ideas :p
I got a bit scared because it started doing that PCIE thing but then it stopped and is doing other things
progress! š®
Nevermind now thereās a new error
Compatibility, Iāll try normal now just for a sanity check
What even is the journal service?
Thatās the thing that keeps getting in my way
is that what ur getting now?
Itās what Iāve been getting in normal mode the whole time, compatibility has been a wide range of issues
Which is ironic I guess
I might sleep on it and see if I can figure it out in the morning
Cuz Iām really sleep-deprived and have been doing this all day
was trying to google it, but im not seeing anything helpful
Yeah, I tried some random solutions but none seemed to do anything unfortunately
haven't read this whole thing, but have u ensured Windows 10 Fast Startup is disabled? that's quite important
Yes
if anyone can help u stunner can š
@candid iron Do you know what this means
idk if i wont start in regular mode, it just may not be compatible
although if the live USB installer started just fine in normal mode, then it is compatible
The text isnāt buggy itās just moving really fast
I got it to start on my first install but now I canāt figure it out
This PCIE issue randomly started being an issue
could it be a bad usb ?
usb drive*
no i guess the ISO wouldnt even begin to load...
if it started up fine, and installed fine, it should boot fine now
she's trying to reinstall, the version she had was 5.15 kernel
i saw briefly y'all were talking about video card stuff, but i have no experience with that
could try the linux Mint Cinnamon edge ISO then , esp. if computer is quite new
Iām really tired so Iām going to get some sleep, Iāll try some stuff in the morning and let you know how things go
are you able to get even to command prompt at boot?
Yes
if so , u can test to see if it's UEFI-booting
What command?
i'd imagine since Windows-10 is there, Win uses UEFI boot, especially machines of 0-6 years old, so therefore Linux should have been installed in the same manner
hang on i'll find the command
ls -lh /sys/firmware/efi
if the list command there shows files and folders, then it's properly set to run UEFI mode
if none found, then installed in wrong mode, and won't boot, or may encounter issues, especially since it's a dual boot
atm its booting from ventoy using cinnamon or edge iso, normal gets journal error, compat mode gets PCIE errors
but im guess she gone bed š like im about to
nvm, goodnight, I'll be back later to see if anything works š
Iām not quite in bed but I do believe Iām going to for now because none of these seem to be fixing it
Iāll probably try more stuff tomorrow
ok
i'll drop by see if i can help! laters
Thank you all for the help anyway, hopefully Iāll get this figured out soon
you could try booting endeavourOS and see how it behaves
not installing it but live booting it to test as it has nvidia support
I got past boot by going to quiet splash in the boot options and adding pci=noaer
So Iām in Mint now at least, though Iām certain thereās more Iād need to do for a permanent solution
Iām in Edge, to be clear, itās installed, Iām getting drivers and updates set up again
did you tried booting with endeavourOS iso just to check how it behaves? @inner lily
it might not be the solution, but worth testing
No, now that Iāve managed to actually get into Mint I donāt really want to risk booting into anything else
I think my graphics card is newer than Mintās graphics drivers so Iām getting 550
that's why you should try with endeavour to see how it works
as it has kernel 6.8
mint goes up to 6.5 iirc
same with nvidia drivers
\o/
Booting from recovery mode works (It throws a bunch of PCIE errors but gets over it), Iām back to just that Journal Service issue
In normal mode
with 550 installed?
Yeah
did u update kernel and other software before 550?
Yep
Everything in the actual thing seems to work but booting from recovery each time seems like it wouldnāt be good to do forever
nah it's not gonna be fun whenever u forget and let it boot normal š weird, I thought it would of behaved the same as it does for me, we have similar hardware
I suppose I could try reinstalling in Rufus, since thatās what you did itād be closest to an identical installation
I have a few other sugestions, but theyre clutching at straws at this point, like resetting BIOS to default, or using a different SATA port on ur SSD
I was also thinking maybe removing ur nvidia GPU and using ur Intel to get things installed, but ur past that now
I actually tried the BIOS thing (Obviously re-disabling fast boot), didnāt seem to fix it
Anything involving opening the computer I probably wonāt get around to today
how comfy would u be updating the BIOS?
well try and figure out what model ur mobo is and download the latest from MSI, well, check ur current version first
u flash it from within the BIOS
u just need to put the .rom or w/e it is on to a USB
there should be a EASY FLASH option within the main menu
MSI MPG Z690 CARBON WIFI DDR5 LGA 1700 Intel Z690 SATA 6Gb/s ATX Intel Motherboard
Thatās what the store page calls it
ah 690, mines 790, mines better obv, bigger number!
ye, just download it, extract the files to root of a USB and enter bios, there will be a FLASH option somewhere
just make sure u dont turn it off during the process š
1st tho go in to BIOS and make sure u need to update, the version should be somewhere at the top
latest BIOS was released a little over 2 weeks ago
they have a youtube video guide if u need it
u could also boot in to windows and update the ME firmware
Do I just download the top one?
Do I unzip this or just put it in the USB
ye, its a weird filename, but just plop it on to the USB root, not in a folder
brb, need to make mother a sandwich
Alright
how's it going?
The USB isnāt showing up for some reason
Going to reread the guide to see if I missed anything
diff USB to your ventoy?
oh btw, what USB port? one at the back on mobo or a case one?
A case one, should it be on the back?
probs wont make a difference, clutching š
I think I figured out the issue?
It needs to be FAT32, mine is ex-fat currently
So back into Windows I go
š
this is turning out to be some adventure lol
Yeah lmao
either way though, keeping ur BIOS up to date is fairly important
Thank you for all the help by the way
no worries, id just be tinkering or gaming anyway
Iāll try to update it more often in the future
Moving everything off of my 8 GB drive since itās a drive I used for my 360, then Iāll format it and put the bios on there
if its for the 360, it might alrdy be fat32
i guess 360 might also be ntfs tho š¤·
I checked and it's fat32, makes things a bit easier
cool
Might be a bit slow because itās an old USB but itās better than nothing
Itās updating
Going to watch my cats like a hawk so they donāt unplug anything lmao
Alright, Iāll let you know
Should I boot into the bios, Linux or Windows?
Or does it matter
see im not 100% sure if ME Firmware update does anything to ur motherboard, i mean, firmware, to me sounds like it would....but ye, if u wanna do that as well u need to go int to windows
k where u downloaded the BIOS, there is two ME updates in the same area
I am not sure if u need both or not, so just run them both to be sure š
Did you go in to BIOS after reboot and set it up? it should of gone back to defaults after the flash I think, u can do this when uve done ME updates
Alright, Iāll go disable fast boot again
and secure boot
u can also play about with ur Intergrated intel GPU
I turned mine off recently, and then WoW Classic started working, now I was messing with a lot of settings, so I am not sure if that was what fixed it lol
was proba more to do with the runner options i was messing with tbh, i should turn it back on and see :p
btw, side question, did you enable XMP?
no, its safer not enabling from a stability standpoint
Where are they?
but if your RAM is say 6000mhz, u'll be leaving a lot of performance on the table
Description:
-
Update Code Base.
-
Improve system stability when switching to CSM mode.
-
CPU uCode version 0x123 was updated for CPU performance optimization by disabling the CEP function for the 14th Gen CPU (stepping B0).
-

-
ME Firmware update SOP
the bottom ones
I need to afk for 5 to 10mins, need to put the shopping away, back asap š
Thank you so much for the help!!!
No problems!!!!
now go find games to install!
I sugest installing Steam and dont forget to enable Compatability for Proton
Got it
I am chuffed tbh, BIOS updating ftw!
Yeah after so long of trying to get this done it was nice to see a clean boot, not to mention I literally couldnāt sleep because it wasnāt done
ur on 6.5.X-XX kernel btw?
I believe so yeah
click the chield in ur systray and click view > kernels
shield*
6.5.0-28 is current
I am current then
Yep, I updated that about an hour ago, didnāt help me with this issue but I imagine itāll be good for the future
yeye, i was getting jankyness on the 535 or whatever mint installed
So with my similar build it probably wouldāve been a similar story
Anyway, I donāt believe I need anything else now, thank you again!
no worries, DM me if u have any issues or come back here š I'll DM u if i hear nothing to see how ur enjoying Mint š
Sounds good
