#Cannot boot into windows or linux after installing linux from USB
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
nope. research how to do a UEFI install; turn off Windows Fast Startup before any further attempts. Use ventoy utility with GPT in its setup options to remake a bootable usb n copy iso to it.
👍 thanks
I wasnt able to use ventoy, so I used rufus instead with GPT. When I restarted the computer, I wasn't able to see or load the usb
do you know how to fix this?
check BIOS for Boot Priorities
from what I hear, to make a UEFI-bootable USB in Rufus, you must press Alt-E as soon as u open Rufus, then pick GPT UEFI, and only then do you give it an iso file to continue with.
thanks very much 👍
i have done this, but i still cannot see the usb when i try to boot
Secure Boot is technically supported, but it does not do anything good, so you might as well turn it off. But if the medium you flashed is not detected, then something is either wrong with the format you wrote, or with the BIOS/UEFI settings.
Would this be the correct format options for the usb drive?
I've been troubleshooting different formats and none of them seem to work.
Partition scheme GPT and Target system UEFI is correct, this should work on a modern PC, i.e. anything newer than ~2011.
Oh, wait. File system NTFS is not good. Use exFAT.
Can't change to exFAT.
Which options are available?
None apart from NTFS.
I have not used Rufus for a while, but a Linux installer on NTFS is not a good idea.
yes do that
do I have to do anything prior before switching?
Wait, what? A 536GB medium? Are you trying to flash the actual hard drive?
no it was the only usb i had lying around lol
u did the alt e thing i said?
yeah
before adding the iso to the field
it should say this right
alright so flash it
with NTFS?
yeah it's fine i've seen it done
i was surprised to hear of it too, but it apparently does work, since the iso file is layered in as ISO9660
do i have to configure windows to safe mode before turning off secure boot
or is it fine if i just
turn it off from bios
no u can just turn that off in the BIOS settings
alright
when u flash the usb, wait a solid 45 seconds after it says it's finished writing
to make sure u dont wreck the drive if it's still internally writing from cache to the flash cells
i had previously booted into linux mint and installed it on the exact same pc, but when I restarted the pc I couldn't boot into anything or enter bios
is there a particular reason for what went wrong prior?
You may have installed it in MBR mode, but did not have the CSM enabled for it to boot.
Just disabled secure boot and flashed the USB, going to restart rn.
@sinful flare Once again, I can't see the USB when I try and load boot options.
I'm guessing theres something wrong with my bios.
Do you have any ideas?
what key do you press to a) enter BIOS setup, and what key for b) list of temporary boot devices to choose
for bios, i press del and for temporary boot devices i press f12
so as it stands, when you press F12 you see no USB stuff whatsoever?
alright go into BIOS, u may need to enable legacy boot
or, u need to ADD UEFI or non-UEFI USB drives to the possible list of boot devices.
try the second, before the first
If you are unsure how this is done, sharing pictures of these menus will help a lot.
lol your name
I am innocent.
I cant find this.
Does “launch CSM” have anything of importance?
CSM is the Compatibility Support Module, which will enable MBR boot. You can try it, won't do harm.
as I'm not truly sure if Rufus worked properly, then yes try that option.
Compat. Support Module allows modern uefi to boot a disk old-style (legacy master-boot-record)
I didnt use MBR on the format, so im predicting it wont work.
You enabled the dual mode, so it should also support MBR.
it might at least show usb device
ok ill try it
only install it if there's not going to be Windows though
otherwise u'll be back in this BIOS screen every single time u wanna change OS
i might just stay in windows atp
aight up to u
i dont want you to have wasted your time though,
u can always turn on the persistence function of Rufus if u wanna keep a light amount of changes on ur mint
does it boot the stick now?
hold on
Do not worry about us. But if your medium continues to not show up, it may be the issue.
what should i select boot filter to
We usually prefer UEFI only, but you can set it to both UEFI and CSM/legacy.
the text is rather annoyingly cut off
You can go into Hard Disk Drive Priority, the USB medium should be in there. If you put it at the top of the list, it should boot without even opening the boot menu.
Unless it is in Removable Devices, then you probably want to move that whole group to the top.
*Removable Device Priority
nothing shows up under it
I have seen hundreds of these, Stunner. For whatever reason, more often than not USB pen drives show up as hard drives.
shrug
there's some tips near the bottom that shows what keys to hit to move the priority around
i have a laptop that i use for other things and i could definitely get it working on that
yeah
less to get buggered upfront and later
i mean, it has been a great learning experience
so i wouldnt consider it a loss
thanks a lot 🙏
yeah. ur welcome.
You can always come back here to get more help when you have another device on hand. We can still try to run with this one, though.
