What Mint version?
23
Post results from terminal for lspci -nnk | grep -iA3 net
sec
the machine i'm trying to install on does not have internet access, taht is the problem so i was trying to install firmware b43 package
it sees my broadcom adapter
kernel driver bcma-pci-bridge
Can you use USB tethering to a smart phone?
pc doesnt have blue tooth but I can take a pic though
Use USB tether to a smart phone so that computer has internet
If you get internet to it, in terminal sudo apt update && sudo apt install firmware-b43-installer
kk i'm going to work on that, will ping again when done
yeah it's not seeing the phone, it sees the usb port but not the phone
Did you go into phone settings and enable the USB tether?
yes
Run in terminal dmesg | grep firm
okay enabling spec barrier for firmware
specter v2
lemme try again
got it, it was the freaking usb cable that was the prob
that was annoying lol
I think I got it from here, sorry I wasted your time, if i run into trouble i'll just ask in small questions
Good that USB tethering works, it is easier than doing it manually
Just fyi, I got a "no klass support" message
Not sure what that would mean
he problem is not the DNS nameserver. If you read the discussion on bugzilla link, the problem is a missing or out-of-date GPG key in one of your repositories. If you update your system using dnf (sudo dnf upgrade), you’ll probably see that dnf is able to handle this situation, while GNOME Software is not.
not sure if that applies
That would be for Fedora
sudo apt update
okay

Linux Mint is an elegant, easy to use, up to date and comfortable desktop operating system.
i'll try to install the package again
Go into Software Sources program
Click Additional Repositories and disable CD_ROM entry
The CD-ROM entry is supposed to be disabled on an install
Good to see that it works now
yep
thanks again I really appreciate it
I used to use linux 25 years ago but i've forgotten everything, but mint seems really easy to deal with. you just have to know the basic terminal commands. things have definitely come a long way
I have been using Mint for just over 10 years. Been a forums moderator on Mint forums and ubuntuforums.org for 8 years
Wow, I didnt' realize Mint was around for so long, I might have gone that way sooner. I really want to get away from windows.
Too much advertising and spyware
First Mint release was in August 2006
So it is a very mature distro and you can tell, it's very polished
if u like command line stuff, see #1050504228029874206 message
oh man, thank you so much that is great!!
if not, u can just point n click these days
ie - fixing ur Wifi could have been as easy as picking a higher kernel version in "update manager" (the shield icon in the tray) and clicking the view menu
(u'd still have needed to use Ethernet or tether smartphone to get the new kernel)
sure, that makes sense, the update manager makes life so easy
i was surprised that my cable was the problem, reminds me of asking people ages ago if the PC was plugged in lol
What result from terminal for lspci -nnk | grep -iA3 14e4
just a sec
7:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Inc. and subsidiaries BCM4360 802.11ac Wireless Network Adapter [14e4:43a0] (rev 03)
Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. BCM4360 802.11ac Wireless Network Adapter [1043:85df]
Kernel driver in use: wl
Kernel modules: bcma, wl
That one shouldn't have needed the firmware, just Secure Boot disabled and bcmwl-kernel-source
