#os crash during mint installation! how can I recover my data?
1 messages · Page 3 of 1
not working. i check with this https://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/antixlinux.com
Antixlinux.com won't load? Or, having problems with Antixlinux.com? Check the status here and report any issues!
@low yacht you asked for a website that shows it all.. Google is your friend. https://www.ventoy.net/en/doc_checksum.html look at step 5 there, the screenshot. Which test did you do for your ISO?
Ventoy is an open source tool to create bootable USB drive for ISO files. With ventoy, you don't need to format the disk again and again, you just need to copy the iso file to the USB drive and boot it.
Step 1 paragraph there also tells good life information.
I've already checked 😹 but thanks. I might sound dumb to you but I'm willing to gather knowledge as much as i can
kool. which test did u do in step 5 of the link i posted? it should be always sha256
Sha256
and it should match this underlined thing. but i do have a feeling it's bad since the antix installer also failed the media check
.md5
site's still down
u could boot up Mint, launch Transmission, the let it get the ISO via torrent
go to the 64 bit, FULL iso, click the torrent button; it should prompt to save/open this with Transmission
u got the wrong one , i said the FULL iso in capital letters, not the base one
it showing base in the pic above
i don't know why it's downloading base one only when i click full
@wheat junco you should check it
oh did the whole thing finish?
in the middle
should i download or not
i stopped it when you said it's base one
1.9 gb is for bad one
k
why it's a mess
UI of win 7, 10 & 11 is something feels very attractive to me. Seems like i'll be always in love with the irrespective of using linux
when you open my computer in linux, it's very boring TBH
comparatively win7 and other versions
anyhoo according to the situation linux is the only life saver
@wheat junco while downloading it was 1.17 and now it's 1.2 gb
there's some gorgeous distros out there, like Deepin, or Ubuntu Deepin, or (Feren OS, Kubuntu, KDE Neon)- these are KDE distros
but none of these good for old machine
just gonna feel slow
if u had a minimum 2010, or 2011 or NEW corei5 CPU board, u could rock ANYTHING
Oh i see! Btw i just run verification in linux on iso... We font need ventoy to check it... We can verify iso right after downloading it
I never knew it gives an option to check
I right clicked on the file > check sha256

@wheat junco as i checked share picture by you. It's same for base version
c9689a0ea5c53c08b7d656a09e48e067eb981410baeebe2f5bc9ff64f77c14f4 antiX-23.1_x64-full.iso

yeah uh torrent clients have some fancy thing
reference.
yeah idk. base version probably sucks
how big was the final file? and did it end in .iso extension?
website is working but download page is just loading
after downloading it was 1.2gb
yeah it was iso
brb
sure
ok so that site messed up the titles.. click the torrent button on the SECOND one marked 23.1 BASE, and u end up getting the "full"
downloading full it's 1.87GB
yup.
@wheat junco
c9689a0ea5c53c08b7d656a09e48e067eb981410baeebe2f5bc9ff64f77c14f4
mkay.. looks good
so delete the ventoy one, and copy that new one over.. dont make the computer do any other hard work
and let it rest a full minute after it says it's finished copying
@wheat junco
deleted previous iso
when i tried to copy - paste
got an error
now system is't detecting USB
re-pluggedin and worked but got same error
yeah there isn't it's showing previous one
reboot to Mint
it's glitching
then make sure only have what's important on ur ventoy drive, like supergrub2, maybe the Mint 20.3, and win 7 iso, and that's it.
and then copy the new antix over
System isn't detecting usb now
u rebooted?
Yeah
move it to another port
Ventoy is working
Showing mint iso
I rebooted again
Let's see if it shows usb
@wheat junco it's showing now
k
Got the same error agaib
*again
While copying iso
It's not pasting file more than 35mb
@wheat junco seems like all the mess is going to be with me only 😹
weird. old usb maybe
or cheapname one. it had enough
how many big files on the ventoy drive right now?
if u have room on the Windows 7 partition, copy over the Mint iso
Selected as FAT 32
as in Cut from Ventoy, paste to Windows
wdym
Format i mean
dont tell me ur pasting the file to the Fat32 partition
no it should already BE exFAT.. check the "Disks" app in Mint, your usb style
It's exfat
mhm
Then why it's showing fat32 when i click on format
cuz that's a command not information
anyways, copy the iso
move the Mint one in case for whatever u need it to the Windows space.
then copy over the new antix one
why on earth ?
What do you mean
did it still fail to copy over?
No! Just formatting it incase of any error
that wont really do anything
but sure.
dont erase the VentoyEFI partition
wait, what are u formatting exactly?
I was about to format usb .... But since you siad not gonna change anything i stopped
Trying to copy antix
copy it. it shouldnt have issue. if it does, there's a diff way
Start with normal 1 ?
ya
Boot failed
Light ? It doesn't show any light
oh that's too bad
😹
best to have a usb with an activity light for these things.
always keeps you informed
ok that boot attempt failed.. run the ventoy sum check on the ISO.. u know which one
b54af40ddd83c639a3ea2652a2d03d4960829cd7cbd4e98917e2195912c3ab70
aint right. did u make sure it was the sha256 one?
this is the correct one
😹
How
u can use that ventoy usb to boot the ISO off another drive
so if u have another usb drive (any kind) copy the new antix ISO to that, then i'll show u
well, make a folder in that other drive nice alphabetical, like "aaa" then put the iso in it
dont u have a huge external hard drive with usb adapter?
I have! Let me get it
that's a different story. if u wanna put Windows 7 on ssd, that's up to u. im trying to help u load/install antix
All i want is speed
ok get the big drive
If i can get speed with win7 on ssd
plug it in.
I'll never switch to any other os
i have windows 7 on mine.. it's not as fast as antix
im triple booting on an ssd
i mean for web-use, it's not as fast.
plus u'd be more open to viruses or whatever. i would be careful on Windows 7 not to do much online of sensitive stuff
Dont you feel linux has boring environment
Why do you use Linux 😹
i switched from years back because of how easy it is to get hijacked/ ransomware on Windows
plus i had another PC with brand new SSD empty, and i didnt want to pay for Windows for it
so security, and fun are the two reasons
hey.. what are u gonna do?
ok. what format is the filesystem?
I've formatted with exfat
i dont think it really matters anyway
ok so, all u have to do is copy the antix iso to that drive. thats it
and that SSD is connected with a USB bridge adapter cable right?
Oh! Why we dont have to use ventoy again
i was gonna show u a handy feature.
answer please
Yeah
Usb bridge cablr
ok is the ventoy flashdrive also plugged in?
*cable
Yup
ok so do a reboot, pick the kingston flash drive to boot from
when it gets to the ventoy splash menu, press the F key that says Tree or Browse near the bottom
Ventoy: no jdo or supported files found
look for the tree key
F3
hit that, then navigate to the external SSD, n find ur ISO
It's not showing anything after pressing f3
Just screen is blinking
Whenever i press
hang on
u dont see other drives?
u should .. something like directories at least on the Windows 7 installation, or whatever
ie:
sorry, go back a menu, and F2 for BROWSE
It shows
then do this
Normal mode
ok nvm that step. just run the iso, boot to desktop
you're attempting to boot the iso from the external SSD right?
Yeah
oh. wow.
i mean, u could ventoy the ssd.. i was hoping this method would work. always has for me
or try the "boot in grub2 mode"
Usb stick is ssd
exfat 223.5 GB
Yup
so when u press enter on the ISO, does it show a new screen saying "normal boot, and then Grub2 mode boot"
and when u went the grub2 route, it just failed again?
None of these working I've tried both
it might be cuz the drive's not "internal" ok forget that plan then. Boot back to Mint, ventoy the ssd
How to ventoy in linux ?
ya
I've downloaded gz file
np it's fairly simple
Extracted ventoy folder
k in the folder, turn on the details view
the three icons at the top right
then click the "Type" column to sort by type
then find the file that says ventoy gui x64
something like that
"VentoyGUI.x86_64" is the file
ur ports are being screwy as hell today
Now
ok right click in the white space in the file area, and do "open terminal here"
drag this file onto the terminal, and drop it there, then press enter
make sure ur original ventoy usb is ejected..
then it should only find the 224 Gig usb-ssd
defaults are fine, (mbr) then add the "GOOD" new antix ISO on ur hard drive to it
the 'full' one not the base one, in case u had kept both
@wheat junco check it
It wasn't working but now I've ventoy it using win7... Finally we're on live desktop.. what's next
I've plugged ssd now.... Installing win7
Note: it didn't fast a single bit😹😹😹😹😹
The good thing is now i can switch back to my HDD since win7 and mint is pre installed there. ... Well through this way we've tested both
I'm really amazed why it didn't speedup
😋
told you. the fast drive speeds up booting, and launching programs from cold start. that's it.
@wheat junco i did the same thing with my friend's laptop and ssd made that faster
Well. What should we do now ? I've sdd and hdd where should we install antix linux
well, you need an installer medium. since your regular USB is being funny, I guess you'll need to use the SSD as you were attempting to do last night. and install to the hard drive
yeah i saw it. wasn't sure what you had done
Lets try with that
k
that's correct, as long as you're sure the 240 GB thing is the correct drive
I have to open terminal in ventoy folder and drag that file into terminal
yes
u can open a terminal in any folder really, but when u do the drag thing, it saves having to type more
that's the easiest way to run the GUI installer app for ventoy
interesting. I've had that happen maybe once. try a different port
did the program prompt you for sudo password?
when u launch it
It worked
ah great
i thought u said it worked?
.
Checking installation.....
antix main website finally back. they got a full day outage yesterday
Yeah! I told you it was running but other pages like download and all wasn't working
Type of installation ?
when you mentioned that, it still wouldnt even open the main page for me
Custom or...
yeah custom, since you're d
Here i mentioned
...
alright so, let me have a look at that picture
yeah so sda3, click the dropdown for it
then pick root
there's some other button on the right side for Advanced things
turn that on, and let's have a look
can u expand the two squished columns better, - next to the last column
and show a pic of the help guide text on the left about "Active"
I think u have to checkmark sda3 as active
oh and expand the really really squished column beside the active column. i forgot if it has anything important there
change the option value from 'noatime' to nothing
i think ---- is nothing
and put a checkmark on the 'check' column for sda3
next page
make very, very, very sure about grub
All set?
wait, is there an option in the options column that says "defaults", if so, set it to that
No
ok go to next,
if it asks where to put grub bootloader, choose sda, same as u did with Mint
you're not showing me the whole picture
go back a step, or two.
pretty sure u skipped over a few things re: ventoy loop and live changes (not that you need them)
u definitely didnt show me the picture of where it asks for the bootloader (grub)
also, in the options, did it actually show you "nothing" in the dropdown list, or did you literally type "nothing"?
really not necessary and time waste
just photo the screen and dont show only 80% of it
.
@low yacht
better to leave the field blank instead of the word nothing
after that just install.
select what exactly?
those are just details.. proceed
im just curious why i saw no mention of bootloader/GRUB.. oh well. hope it works
if not, the live session contains a boot repair tool also.
yes continue
perfect, there's the grub screen
it even makes a 2GB swap file, which u will need. perfect.
if it asks to make or enable a root account, just leave it blank/ dont touch it.
ah perfect. that's the thing about the save live changes.. ok leave that field blank, and probably tick the Autologin box.
the save live changes option is basically handy if u played around in the live desktop for a long time, and already installed programs, changed fonts, themes, and other stuff.. then it would carry all that over to the installed environment
both those websites are useful. they come included as browser bookmarks on a fresh install.
next option isn't clickable
failed to mount partition
dont worry
no
dw, close it
i think that's just cuz ventoy's own folder structures are non-mountable when it is running a live OS
what to do now
just wait til it finishes installing
installing? nothing is on the screen now
hm let me see
if the installer failed, the hard-drive light on your computer is not rapidily or steadily blinking.. just run the installer again and use the non-advanced option like in this pic.. and just set sda3 as root (/) and proceed again keeping all the other defaults til it installs.
gotta go for now. cheers
do i have to select auto login this time?
it's copying new files now
exceeding more than 8%
Antix has been installed 🤝
congrats.
if you want to customize it, let me know
stop by the linux mint community #1060895711484444703 channel, and save some nice backgrounds if u find any you like. or visit your favourite www site for free wallpapers
@wheat junco definately i would like to change it all
all thanks to you
@wheat junco do you know ssd trim feature to optimize ssd performance
yeah I know about it. that's just for improving its write speed after it's been used a long time.
or to maintain its write speed.
Oh! Do we have to change any settings after plugging ssd?
@wheat junco my friend is buying a laptop.. used one so is there any way to check all the specs properly. Usually shopkeepers fool people when it comes to tech
um if it's a SATA interface, usually no.
in Device Manager, if it has Windows on it
also with a Windows program called CPU-Z
Does device manager has info about usb versions and ram version?
in USB section should show USB Enhanced host controller
it may say 2.0 or 3.x afer that
She's going to buy it for graphic designing purpose. What should be the configuration according to you
i think the general windows system info screen says about the RAM amount and DDR 2 or DDR 3 or higher
idk anything intel i5 at least
can ask Curunir about AMD brands
@terse hill
AMD naming scheme seems complicated to me
i have no idea
Intel keeps it simple
Help me to make changes
ok
i'll tell u how I set mine up
first, I shortened the rather lengthy quicklauncher in the taskbar
You are asking about what machine to buy? In that case, please name the budget, and if it should be a laptop or desktop.
but dont DONT get rid of the "eject disks" app in the quicklauncher.. u wont get it back ever.
Laptop! Budget is around 25k
what's that in american bucks? 😛
I presume that is not $25000.
INR
I have no idea what that buys you in India. It is only about ~280€, which would get you a refurbished machine at best.
i'd say for graphic design, anything in the last 9 years.. and NOT a Mac.
since I hear a lot from Rossman the repair guy, Macs are super easy to breakdown, the recent ones
Getting i5 7th gen 1tb hdd 250ssd win10 4gb graphics
If you can get that, it should be fine. If you can get a Ryzen instead, that would be more fine.
Do you prefer ryzen over intel?
They are objectively better, and have been since 2018.
How to check version of graphics and all.... Naming scheme of amd is confusing
Enter the name of the CPU in a search engine, pick the result that leads to AMD. All the specifications you need.
I heard people saying mac is better for editing 😹
bleh
for rich people
and if something breaks, good for very rich ppl to spend HUGE money to fix or replace
and im not exaggerating. Apple quotes HUGE money repairs.
And I heard that drinking bleach cures your Covid.
Seriously, all modern computers have plenty resources for editing. If you need lots of RAM, get one where you can upgrade RAM, which means no Apple products.
My friend is a devops engineer he's madly in love with Apple don't know why 😹
this sounds pretty decent, but it would help if it had more RAM than 4GB, or at least be expandable to more.
Checking Ram is a real trouble
I don't see options in win7
And where to check ssd details
in your own Windows 7, right click "computer" on desktop, then properties
He can fool us saying it's ssd inside but who knows if there is an hdd
How to check that
70% of all people in the world are idiots, I do not know why, either.
by having it boot up from doing "restart" not shutdown. if it boots within 15 seconds or less, it's definitely running an SSD
Shutdown can be a trick, due to Windows fast-startup magic
Including me! That's why trying to gather information as much as i can 😹
but Restart will definitely restart from scratch.
You are trying to learn, that means you are not an idiot.
With the budget you named, you are well outside Apple territory, that stuff is expensive and bad value, because you can never upgrade it.
also Device Manager> storage controllers> should show what internal drives are connected.. and one should mention ssd, not HDD
Intel still has some sort of monopoly in most markets. So smart people buy Ryzens, the rest can pay the Intel tax for inferior overclocked chips.
Don't worry i hate apple product 😂
I am not worrying, just helping you to not waste money.
Ryzen 5 is pretty good. idk my details about their generations tho
If you find a Ryzen offer you are considering, share it and I can opine on it.
Will surely do it once we we go to shop tomorrow
ok so if ur ready to dress up your new Antix, let's go
I guess you're not ready then. nvm.
I was offline @wheat junco
Btw checkout this
GF63 8RD
https://www.msi.com/Laptop/GF63-8RX/Specification
Getting for 360$ usd
@terse hill
That is a pretty reasonable laptop, if you can get it for your budget. It is even technically Win11 compatible. Of course a 1050 is considered a (very) poor man's choice in the West now, but it will deliver solid performance for some low-detail gaming and never choke on any video decode you throw at it. Upgradeable memory is good, you should make sure you get at least 2x8GB of it. And the best thing about an MSI: It is neither an HP nor an Asus.
@terse hill
asus tuf gaming fx505dt_fx505dt
That one is newer, with a Ryzen and a 1650. Quite a bit faster, but also takes a bit more power. I am not too fond of Asus, but they make some decent computers, if they can restrain their overclocking addiction.
Cost is 384$
That is about the price it will fetch over here refurbished.
hello today.
Hey, How should we start ?
did u get familiar with ur new system yet?
Yes it is a good laptop and it had 16gb ram. And it also had intel graphics. I don't know why it's not mentioned on website
Totally GPU memo was 8gb
Kind off
first thing u should do, it's not long, is run the antix faq link on the desktop
then the first chapter, "what's in Antix 21"
sorry, i meant the "Some Great Features in Antix Linux"
and below that section simply titled antiX-23
and the "what's in Antix-23".. that whole bit
so u know what ur dealing with when u see stuff in the application menu
sure.
start menu> control centre
then Hardware category
"brightness control" then use arrow keys to ramp it up
I've moved the slider but the brightness is still same
really?
Yeah! Let me show you
maybe hit enter at the setting level u want
or q to quit
else, use the brightness up/down keys on laptop
crank it max
Nothing is changing when I'm increasing or decreasing slider
No response
reboot to grub menu, press the down arrow key once, then the up arrow key once. then use the brightness (sun icon) keys from there, then boot antix
Can't we do all this with qredshift?
no
since that's an applet that only works on Cinnamon
applets are not programs but sub-programs
check what kernel you're currently running, since antix comes with 2.
open terminal and put uname -r
6.1.60 - antix.1-amd64-smp
try the grub thing, then use the advanced options for antix
i think u can pick the 5.10 kernel there. might work better
Not working! And sun keys never worked on my laptop dont know why
well idk then
that's an issue
but not a linux issue
try the other kernel shrugs
Whay jm supposed to do now! I was able to adjust it in mint and win7
it's the core of the operating system
It booted with low brightness
what worked exactly?
Yup
what worked exactly?
what'd u do?
Changed the kernel
oh ok. check with uname -r in terminal
then run the brightness control thing again like earlier
5.10.199
Slider working now
I've started hating linx more😹😹 it was very easy in windows to adjust brightness
@wheat junco what's next
ah perfect! see u got it!
well i was gonna offer you a better background image for your grub screen
im personally not a fan of the rather ugly default Antix wallpaper image, which is also the grub wallpaper. are u?
Not at all
I've changed he wallpaper for desktop
what did u use, out of curiosity?
Grub is something i don't care about
u will see grub everysingle time u boot.. so i do recommend u put a nice background
Win10 night sky wallpaper 🤣😹
Indeed!
Do we have to make other changes ?
i'll show u .. u said u wanted to change and customize a lot
Yup
alright it's best if u log in to discord now on ur install
I know!
and all the later version spy on you in devious ways
they literally say in their terms of service (End user licences agreement , EULA) we own everything on ur computer using Windows
"we can modify anything at anytime"
That's a sad story
We are never safe the day we started using internet
anyway u logged on to discord now?
You even have nudes🤣
no
Done
alright.. so open zzzFM (the default file manager)
ok so an interesting thing about zzz, is you can simply type the first few letters of a file name in a long list of files, and it will immediately highlight that closest-match file
it will work even if searching ur data disk or whatever, just fyi
Everything would be on cloud
/usr/share/wallpaper/grub <paste this in the address bar of zzz
i have a few pics i like
these are carefully sized and with the proper colour bit-depth to run on the grub background splash
as are whatever is in that grub folder in the path i sent.
Do you know programing?
if u want to add these, u can save and move them to the grub folder.
no i dont, and i dont want to
Where and how did you learn all this
Wow!! You're the real self made hero 🤣
That's what I'm doing
anyway, did u want to use my backgrounds or pick the ones existing in the grub pic folder?
Before buying laptop i understand how processor naming scheme works
I'll use different one
ok pick one from the grub folder u like, and make a mental note of its name
u cant use other pics unless they're specially edited to the proper specs
have u chosen??
@low yacht
i dont have forever
Done
ok then in control center, go to session, click the item that says Grub background
Have patience one day you'll be realising your distro of Linux 😹😹
and choose the one, then Commit.. (it takes about 15 seconds to do it)
All set
test it out.. do a reboot.
and this time just boot normally (no advanced menu)
it should have changed the grub background, plus remembered your preferred kernel to use, and hopefully remembered your brightness preference
how I dressed mine up and I love it.
@wheat junco bad news boi!!!! my laptop's fan has been broken I guess maybe not working. it works until the grub menu then gets off
HP 630 Notebook PC (currently using this)
put that under it, flat
@low yacht how do you know it's really the fan? has the laptop clearly become super hot? and u only hear silence from it when u listen very close?
also it's normal for the laptop fan to spin quite high during power-on self test.. it dies down after a few seconds. that's normal.
i was using it on terrace and studdenly while using it i heard some sound and saw smoke came out of fan side. It was on for 2 mins then suddenly got turned off. when i tried turn it on it was only booting till grub menu
good news is... it has started working now
HP 630 Notebook PC // i am unable to find the specifications of this laptop over internet could you please help me with this
How to know that it came with licensed windows or not
there would be a certificate of authenticity sticker under it
which by now is likely smudged to oblivion
as u mentioned once
no no ! this is a different laptopp
@wheat junco i'm online! we can make changes to antix
task bar is looking sexy!
Only until Windows 7. Starting from 8, the stickers went away in favour of serials being saved in UEFI, out of reach of users.
hello.
thanks, it's the Korstro one, you can change it and find many to choose from using the IceWM Manager found in the quicklaunch area of your panel
also launched from start menu, Applications, antix, IceWM Manager
run it, go to the 'Look and Feel' side tab, then use the Select IceWM theme button.
- from the Look and Feel category, there is also a "Change Appearance" button, this will give you control over what the window bodies look like, and the main system font button located under the preview
- in the same look and feel category, there is a button for 'selected app icon to be placed on desktop'. you may click it, search "wallpaper" and hit the checkmark. this will make switching wallpaper a click away on the desktop. You may also add any other apps to the desktop that way.
sample of the 'Appearance' dialog box.
Note the three graph icons in the system tray, they are very handy and are as follows: Network activity (speed shown on hover), Memory usage, and CPU usage (hover shows details in picture above)
- keep an eye on your ACPI temperatures if you think the fan is gone. this temperature definitely rises on media- and javascript-heavy websites like youtube.
Aren't these graphs clickable ?
yes, rhe network and cpu ones
What else should i change
heya good day
read the whole thing I typed, and go wild

#Dell 7520
I7 7th gen
16gb Ram
256gb SSD
4gb grafic card
15.6" screen
Price - 20,000/. INR
@wheat junco i have to make changes to time and date like we did last time. And i don't know why it doesn't show battery percentage
things are hard to customise in linux antix
check the clock category in IceWM manager
also, right click the time in tray
idk about the battery thing.
those are some wicked specs for ~$300 . if it isn't brutally damaged or scratched.. i think it's good.
the second pc, (HP C640) is more limiting. only 64GB emmc which is not upgradable to larger storage.
second one seems ideal for a coffee-shop writer.. very light, but not fit for a graphic designer.
this one seems to be better spec'd than the one in your picture, for less money too.
the HP in the pic with the AMD 3500 is Windows 11 capable though.
24000, is equiv. to about $400 CND, or $300 USD. not too bad.
the AMD 3500 is a more recent computer than the i7 Dell 7520
i'd say both are pretty capable.
the i7 wont conform to Windows 11 requirements.. but it would work great on Linux.
the last one is one generation newer than the dell u listed the other day. it will work on Windows 11, (being 8th gen intel) i cant say the difference between this last one and the AMD
other than ur getting twice the memory
are the AMD and this one both desktop computers?
Amd is for 23k and intel is for 24k
Laptop
both eh
so, between the two, they're both very capable. i'd say check the screen view angles and colour representation.
and go with the better screen
check angles from high and low.. and sides
Amd comes with 8gb ram.... Intel one comes with 16
The difference i found
@wheat junco i want to learn how do you compare processor and graphics... It's been a big trouble for me
how about storage?
Same 250 SSD
oh ok.
if u really want to dig deep, u'd have to research at home on some site about the processors. i cant do that for u
if u're there, the best practical thing to do is load a youtube video, and see how fast u can switch it to full screen while its playing, and then switch back to non-fullscreen
the one that switches fastest and smoothest would be the top choice.
just make sure the youtube video on each test is set to the same resolution
ie - 720,.. or 1080
@low yacht
Got you
I can compare processors but graphics been a trouble... I don't understand the naming
well if the video plays smoothly, and ur not a hardcore gamer, dont worry about it
I got two websites versus.com and cup benchmark
Whenever i have to compare i just search
ryzen 5 3500u vs i7 8650u
Like this
alright. yeah it takes some reading. if anything, find out about the thermals.. which one runs cooler overall
well it's listed, u posted pictures
yeah i have got it now
generally the more the better for gaming, otherwise not so much
how do i find if windows is genuine or not
or better for video editing
usually right click the my computer icon, see Properties
it will typically say so
but idk else
are digital license attached with hardware ? @wheat junco
This requires years of experience, especially since the manufacturers intentionally make them hard to compare.
The AMD 3500U would be my favourite among those, but you need to get 16GB of DDR4-SODIMM for it, otherwise it will be a bad experience with the use case you described. If you must pick from the offers as they are, the Coffee Lake Intel with 16GB is better.
Concerning graphics, do you intent to game on it? If so, what do you want to play, which genres? Because for general desktop use with some video acceleration, these are all fine. The difference is mostly in game performance. As for GPU compute, neither of these is useful, because most programs will require an nvidia chip.
in short you are saying that intel one is better
Absolutely not. I am saying 16GB is necessary.
apparently. idk how they do it. ms-account or something
OEM PCs have their "license sticker" inside the UEFI, in a hidden place that users cannot read, but Windows can.
if i upgrade to 16gb amd would be best!?
I would prefer it. CPU-wise equal to the 8xxx Intel, but better GPU. Also lower power draw.
how do i know if it's oem or not
wait is this for u or that person in graphic design?
idk for surfing and general office stuff.. 8 is fine
for more pro-use, then more the better
OEM means original equipment manufacturer. For desktops, that means pre-built. For laptops, the vast majority of them are OEM and come with a Windows license, but not all of them.
Radhika's gonna explore 1500 Linux distros. by then it will turn Windows 20
my friend has chosen intel one since it was looking better from outer condition than amd one
hahaha
yeah for a graphics person, like i recommended, screen quality and colour richness would matter
it was really tough to compare these both
then again, anyone can also buy a big monitor
blew my mind
@wheat junco i have that laptop in my hands now
windows is preinstalled
intel
oh ok. u bought it?
see
ya i would say seeing as it has a good deal more of memory for not that much more cost, i think it's a good buy
anyway that's a wrap on that I guess
Intel and their fraudulent naming scheme again. This is a fine CPU, but it is Kaby Lake, not Coffee Lake. Might be just below the cutoff line for Win11 support.
tell ur friend to install openhardwareinfo on it.. it will show temperatures
keep it running cool whenever possible to extend the life
even if means buy a cooling pad fan thing under it
i have to install everything and make changes
if its being put on heavy work duty
wait let me see the program exact name on my Win 7
so i shouldn't install win 11 on it?
You can if you want to. It might just refuse.
currently it's win 10 pro
how to do that?
There is a Microsoft tool to tell you if a PC can run Win11. I do not do MS support, find it yourself.
i say if it runs fine on Windows 10, leave it.
i'm always of the if it works today it works tomorrow mentality
just decline any offers
do i have to make a fresh install since we bought it from outside?
nah lol what for?
It is on the list, so I guess it is supported: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/design/minimum/supported/windows-11-supported-intel-processors
if it doesnt have any weird software on it that plainly obvious, dont bother
why did you say that fraudulent naming scheme
maybe hacking and all
Kaby Lake is the 7xxx generation, Coffee Lake is 8xxx. This 8650U is Kaby Lake, because they like to break their own numbering scheme to sell old shit for more money.
meh. if ur dealer is that sketchy. can install something like ad-aware or whatever to detect
Crucially, only 8xxx chips have Win11 support, but this seems to be the case here, although most Kaby Lake chips do not have Win11 support.
And my point is, this is a weird 7th gen hybrid with an 8th gen name.
oh
how to find such scams
it shows kaby lake R
Yes. I did not know this before, but apparently, Intel made a small batch of modified Kaby Lake chips with newer CPU features for mobile, for whatever reason. They are not Coffee Lake, but since they share some of the features, they were included in the 8th-gen numbering scheme. Lucky for prospective Win11 users, since these CPU features are required by Win11.
wish i would have bought AMD one and install more ram on that
It is common that manufacturers re-use old chips and just increase the numbers to justify higher prices when they do not have anything new to sell.
why? u tested it out
😂
if it runs good, it's good
Sorry for working during the day.
^^ LOL
It is not a bad system, relax.
yea it works fine
this is the app i have on desktop that shows in windows the few things that are important.. core clock speed, core temps, CPU load bar graph, memory load bar graph.. and even the SSD temp.
Are you sure you don't want me to buy you a refurbished Thinkpad or something, Stunner? You earned it.
imma look up the name i think it's called openhardwaremonitor
no no thank u
i think my next computer is gonna be a toast-sandwich sized mini pc
I have three of these now, mini-cube-PCs are great. You can get some Renoir/Lucienne ones pretty cheap right now.
brb
@low yacht see this pic.. and I recommend the small app. i confirmed it's called openhardwaremonitor . Can also show cpu temperatur number inside the taskbar
definitely gonna use it after win11 upgradation
don't you feel win11 is better than 10?
what do you say
not particular tbh. i just hate the wide search box on Win10.. i remove it, and replace it with just the magnifying glass search icon
anyway, leave it ur tastes.
damn! haha
actually she wants to use win11
ok whatever.
are u getting yourself a new computer soon? after the other one smoking the other day...
year end i guess
oh ok
I do not feel cholera is better than pestilence, no.
hello. How's it going?
@wheat junco could you please suggest me something like to qredshift
there's a built in utility in antix. Check Applications>Preferences>Screenlight
use the setup Night values button, put 80 for brightness (or whatever you like) and put 5650 for colour temperature, then save the file, and close editor.
then press the Apply Night values button, and the OK button.
cancel button to exit.
If you want to remove that reddish tinge it makes, set the colour temperature in the night values to 6100 or 6500
@low yacht hey how's your system performing?
@wheat junco sorry i wasn't available here for a while. I have started using win7 and now realised both the os win7 and linux are a bit same when it comes to speed. I didn't see a big change
oh ok. what web browser do you use on Win 7?
currently i'm trying to learn python and alongside AWS
chrome
oh does it even allow the latest version to install?
in future if i learn linux I'll switch to that
lol what did u have to do to install Chrome?
I didn't find a better option
for windows
i mean how did u install it, if the website doesnt give u the latest version? oldapps?
To get future Google Chrome updates, you'll need Windows 10 or later. This computer is using Windows 7. Learn more
Version 109.0.5414.120 (Official Build) (64-bit)
i just went to chrome website and it installed me this version
oh i see
last supported version for win 7
same for Firefox for me. I got the ESR version 115 on Windows
yeah! i just checked now for mozila
any tips for python and AWS ?
which coincidentally, is nearly the same version on AntiX by default
no sorry i have no idea about those
oh i see
in windows i'm using flux as blue light filter
kool
why don't you work in IT sector since you have good knowledge
are you a student or what
no.
🙈
Not reachable. But a Ryzen 5300U is a pretty good budget APU. You do want to upgrade to 16GB RAM, since 1-2GB are taken by the (also pretty good) iGPU, and you do not want to tackle the modern Internet with just 6GB available.
I've purchased it for 24k INR
Hello. How's everything going?
@wheat junco got a 2nd hand laptop
which i had for yrs now trying to fix it
i want to install ubuntu this time
current :

hello radhika. busy atm chat later
sure! ping me whenever you are free ❤️
@wheat junco are you now available ?
hahaaa yes I am stirring
mind you, I haven't had coffee yet
nice
did u install 'buntu yet?
I'll gift you a cafe😹😹 dont worry
No! I do nothing before your suggestions when it comes to linux
Have a look on system specs
And let me know what would be better
I mean which distro
i just said thr nice
it would run buntu easily. the question is would you be comfortable in flagship Ubuntu?
Shouldn't be a question to you😹
the main one based on GNOME
All these are desktop environments right ? Gnome... Kde ... Flagship... Mate
How about gnome ?
Windows xp🤣😹
n it's faster
no, the MATE version
I know.. just asking about gnome
gnome might be slightly slower a little
YouTube is flooded wuth GNOME
im just saying it cuz the desktop way is pretty darn different, and idk u have tried it urself in virtual
if u admire it's flow, try it
well, I've tried only Xubuntu, Ubuntu Budgie, and Ubuntu MATE.
Budgie is beautiful and modern. and decent speed, and familiar layout
MATE was the fastest, and it had some layout switchers as I said, so it is a simple adjust to make side-panel icon launcher, or bottom panel (like in the XP example pic)
I personally cannot stand GNOME
Do you still have mate ?
