#os crash during mint installation! how can I recover my data?
1 messages · Page 2 of 1
/ and ok?
It's hell disgusting
Experience it for the first time
Gpart is there
oh there's a link to it.. ok
yeah u'll have to resize it with that then
I was really hoping the installer would be like regular Linux Mint 21 (based on Ubuntu) where it offers a very simple slider to divide up the free space Windows has)
Don't you feel Linux is complicated than windows? 🤧
Wait! Are we using lowest version of Linux mint?
you're using LMDE 6 which is the latest all-Debian version.
the latest flagship version based on Ubuntu is Mint 21.3
Which one is better
i havent tried both so i cant say definitively. The flagship version is known to be easier overall.
Should we try that then?
What do you say
Like let's give it a last try and move to flagship
yeah if ur a newbie.. and u are.. i dont see why u wouldnt have started with that.
What's flagship btw
flagship is the leading showpiece version
Someone on the server told me Faye would be best for my low end laptop 🙂
well u have ventoy usb now. u can put easily other ISOs on it.. n give em a spin. if flagship Mint Cinnamon isn't handling well, u can go with Mint xfce.
anyway did u resize ? if u wanna give it one last go on this?
Thinking of doing it tomorrow
I'm dead by now
It's 1:20am
ohh u know what else I just remembered
🤨
I remember once reading in the linuxmint website, that LMDE doesnt play nice with multiboot iso loaders.. like ventoy. and Rufus is a bit buggered too. U can if u want, try to make the USB with Balena Etcher in Windows tomorrow
Will try that too 🤣
We're playing on every possibility
yeah dont make the data partition til the very, VERY end after Linux is working well.
alright goodnight then.
There won't be anymore! I'll keep data online and on external drive
Have a peaceful day
ty
For what it's worth, I installed Faye on this very machine I am typing on from a Ventoy medium. But I concur that Mint 21.3 is the sane choice for this.
@wheat junco are you up ?
👋
so to carry on from yesterday, resize the big green section
We were unable to do that from gpart
u wanted something like this.. 97
97 for Windows
Exactly
Dkne
ok
pick that newly made on for linux, and set its mountpoint to root
see if the installer will have that box like before to make a filesystem
Check it now
yes. can u select that free space?
dont think it'll work
What to do then
if not, go back to gparted, make that space (create) ext4 filesystem
since we are doing this all manually.
stay in gparted.
you'll need to add a flag to sda1 (besides the 'boot' one) namely, bios_grub or grub
Done ?
@wheat junco do we have to make any changes ?
yeah just slap the label on there as 'linux' just for easy id
hit add, then do what I said for sda1 above
hmm nothing with grub? scroll it.. and what does the very top one say?
let me see what that bls thing is
check on that bls-boot flag, (in addition to the boot one)
Both ?
yes
then apply all changes
*done
then in the installer, edit sda3, to set its mountpoint
yes
u can check format ext4, (even tho we did it already) but just to be cool
🌚🌝
cuz last time u put it just to sda (the disk) as per my recommendation
but then it had load problems
can u put it on sda1?
ok set it to that then for the grub loader
only need that
Sda3.... Etc
then proceed to the next step
We're just a single click away....
@wheat junco install?
Damn
nevermind.. sdb2 raised my attention but that's just ventoy's boot partition.. it's fine.
see u in 20 minutes.. good luck on the installation
@wheat junco root acc is locked!! We're back to hell
i can't figure out this craziness.
unless the darn iso is bad
u can do the file integrity check from the Ventoy boot menu, and compare the numbers to the text file for LMDE on linuxmint.com
but at this point, it's absurd either way.
How to do that ?
sha256sum
im wondering if this is all your fault for picking mint for the user name.
and the computer name
you couldn't be a bit more creative?
locked root account
yeah maybe that's the default name for the debian administrator (just a hunch)
anyway did u compare the sha numbers??
It's calculating
bring the website up on ur phone
That's what I'm choosing since beginning ...
Done
yeah and it failed everytime
find the lmde download, and the sha txt file, save and open it, and compare
if u do reinstall, show pic exactly on the spot u make the account
Let's reinstall first then
Where will I get this ?
i told u where
https://linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=308 see bottom
Linux Mint is an elegant, easy to use, up to date and comfortable desktop operating system.
make the real name and the username slightly difffferent
ok fine, but did u verify? otherwise if iso is bad, wasting tme
Netherlands evoluso

good
what's the very next page after user acct?
manual and erase?
k so do like last time, keep same flags, no need to resize
just edit sda3, format as ext4, /,
grub to sda1 like before
just right click the blue, make sure the "format" box is ticked, and proper mountpoint
Blue ? That is unclickable
We can only click things under device
Should I click sda3 and mount it ?
Like earlier @wheat junco
right click sda3
Did
.
/
Ext4
make absolutely sure the format (as ext4) box is selected and ON
Both selected
Installing......
Root acc locked!!!!!!!!!! @wheat junco
that's too bad. the ONLY remaining option is to try with Etcher.
or just go straight to mint 21.3 ubuntu based right now
What's the difference
did u get a Grub menu at least? showing llinux, linux advanced, and Windows 7?
Yeah
it's easier.
in the sense that it has a 'driver manager' app, and u can add private repos, and that the account/admin requirements are a bit more flexible
Faster
both the same for speed i'm willing to say that. they both use Cinnamon 6 which carries the agility overhead
Mint xfce though is more peppy in general
it's their lightest option.
it looks the same pretty much. have u seen pics or videos of mint xfce?
im not talking plain-ass xfce from ubuntu
Not much a very few pics
pardon?
What do you prefer mint ubantu or debian
I've used kali Linux in 2021
Xfce looks good 😹😹😹😹
personally I loved Mint Cinnamon 20.3 (flagship) it ran very snappy, very quick ( i did have an ssd, but even the live version loaded way faster than mint xfce 21.3
Let's go for 20.3 flagship
What do you say
it is still supported for one more year.. so if u wanna get that, get it from the main website under 'other versions'
light/dark is always configurable in any distro
I hope my laptop will survive it
is it a Sony actually?
Sony // amd dual core e-450 1.65ghz // 4gb // 500hdd
dual core.. i think it should be adequate
esp. for v20
u can give it a go.. in a year or two u might change it
If we're running Faye ...
Faye is the codename for LMDE 6, and only that.
Mint Cinnamon 20.3 (flagship) is lighter than what we're trying to run?
I believe it is, based on what some ppl here have said regarding 21 (with version 6 Cinnamon) acting sluggish in some cases
20.x had Cinn 5.8 or something
the older one should have no trouble at all with your 15 year old laptop
😹
What do you currently use
If you really want lightweight, I recommend Lubuntu. As for Mint Cinnamon, it will run, and I have not noticed it being slower on Cinnamon 6.
I actually have an E350 system, pretty similar to your old laptop. I might test some with it, but I will only have time on the weekend.
Curu, I had her reinstall LMDE meticulously at least 3 times, with much scrutiny
I noticed. Shame it failed.
and while it does boot, it halts in Emergency mode, and says 'root account is locked'
More than 3
I think this is a Debian shortcoming in this particular use case.
I even inspected the account creation step.. there was NO option for a normal-user acct plus a "root user" acct. so no way it could have gotten buggered in that step
Some regression with the LMDE logic that drops it back into Debian mode, which is silly mode.
u said u successfully did it.. even with Ventoy.. but i take it, yours was on ESP setup?
Yes. I use UEFI boot whenever I can.
MBR is such a rare fringe use case these days that hardly anybody tests for it any more.
I would give Mint main a shot, but I personally would go with 21.3. Other than that, good options for that slow hardware are Lubuntu and AntiX. I hesitate to recommend AntiX because of the crude UI, but it is proven to do MBR very well. It is made for old clunkers like this one.
had no issues though.. 2 internal installs, and one external install even.
Sure, but you did not inflict a Sony on yourself.
indeed.
someone I know had a Sony Vaio PINK netbook, and it was so lovely.. when quite new, running Win 7 on a spinner.
ran very well, just a bit long to boot up
The designs were nice, but they were nightmares to maintain or repair.
well @low yacht what will it be?
the sony power light that would fade in and out like 'breathing' in sleep mode was so cool
The options besides Mint:
https://lubuntu.me
https://antixlinux.com
There are more, but these would fit your old CPU best in my view.
@wheat junco what's there today
Can do it within minutes
Tell me which one to do
@wheat junco Mint Cinnamon 20.3 (flagship)
//
21.3
Which one ?
i say 20.3
could you please share the downlaod link
Linux Mint is an elegant, easy to use, up to date and comfortable desktop operating system.
Linux Mint is an elegant, easy to use, up to date and comfortable desktop operating system.
scroll way down, pick one of the locations nearest u, and click the link beside them
copy to ventoy, and verify the iso like yesterday. shasum file is on that page link above.
Downloaded this
verify from ventoy
Done
it matches?
Yea
then start normal
Done
Install window is same almost
It has some new options
Like OEM install // integrity check
It's working faster than previous one
Finally I'm on desktop
Install Linux mint @wheat junco ?
no
test the sound, headphones, ethernet port, WiFI.. video playback first, and test the general feel
so everything works for the hardware?
But speed is better
good. test that
One more thing now I'm able to high and low screen brightness
But in previous one it was not working
💔
Working
alriight.. u test web browser/ video
i would run up gparted then, and delete sda3
Dome
applied?
*done
apply the change. then u run installer, and install to that space
(close gparted before run the installer)
if ur connected to internet, check off Yes
it helps with versatility to play various movie files
or audio
It's already unchecked
and pick anything but mint for real name and username
I'm connected to internet
check it to on
no. i've seen it tho
no
remember sdb is your ventoy drive
mounting means it's in an active state, ready for read/write. It needs to stay mounted to be able to have the installation files accessible for copying
see that's the option I was talking about. However, since u already made a blank unformatted area, pick "something else"
choose the free space which should be about 400 GB, click on + to add a Volume, make it ext4, and set it's mountpoint to root
Done
bootloader as shown as default to sda device.. then Install button
👍
yep do it
u read the stuff well, u will learn exactly what's going on.. u've done it many times now
mostly. u did notice the installer is a bit different though
and this one detected another OS
usually for newbies, they don't even need to prepare space, they just click the first option to install alongside. (or erase everything if they want to overwrite Windows or whatever's already there)
retype the password from the first field, then again in 2nd
i can see one's shorter than the other 😛
and DONT FORGET IT
It sorry! I didn't check that before sending pic
😹😹😹😹
Excitement 😁
yeah u should write it down or have it precisely memorized, you'll need that password because it's also the admin password to clean up system files or add/remove programs
yes 3 versions of it
It's one of the popular distro
i never went with the flagship one cuz I hate the look. But i tried Ubuntu Budgie and it was lovely. Ubuntu MATE was also great (and quite stylable), and briefly tried Xubuntu
and I hear good things from folks here on the lightweight Lubuntu
Xubuntu is lighter
Lubuntu is the lightest
I have a friend who is a network engineer... He uses ubuntu
I have an SSD and it flies. (but even on a hard drive externally, I tried it and was good)
I switched to linux just bcoz of speed! I use multiple tabs on chrome but it takes time which I really hate
if installation works well, set up your network logins, and then do a Timeshift backup (a manual one) immediately to your external 1 TB drive.
and keep your Ventoy USB as an emergency rescue disk. (it can be used to boot live as a form of rescue tool, to restore timeshift, etc)
u can also add any files to the Ventoy flash drive as a usual drive.
but for Timeshift backup, use the 1 TB.. Timeshift is a synchronizing program that makes an exact copy of all the system files/ program files of a working system, so if it is working fine today, u will want to make that backup of the working Mint system. (and later u can add another backup say a week or two from now)
- oh and in the Welcome Screen, please do choose your local mirrors (for downloading software sources quickly)
firefox is a bit faster than Chrome in my experience.
I still have confusion about linux distros naming scheme
and it comes standard on Mint, and most distros.. But u can also get Chrome as well, as a backup browser, in case the rare media-heavy, javascript-heavy site doesnt load right on Firefox
I used it alot as kid not anymore 😹
Linux Mint is the distribution name. Faye is a version codename (like how Win Vista codename was "neptune"
latest Firefox past version 62 got super fast
What is flavour
a term that usually is the same distro core but with a different desktop environment as the default.
DE or 'desktop' simply is the main graphical interface u use. there's 6 major ones in linux
Cinnamon, gnome, xfce, kde plasma, MATE, Lxqt
These are desktop versions?
What are we currently using ?
u should know
ya
Una
= 20.3
just the codename for the version of this Mint.
Linux Mint is the distro name
just like Windows 95 had codename Chicago, Window 98 had codename Memphis,, XP was Whistler
Mint 20.x is based on the software repositories (repos) of Ubuntu 20.04 (codename Focal Fossa)
ubuntu version numbers are based on the YEAR/MONTH so it came out 2020-4 (april)
and all the April releases with even-numbered years are Long-term Support (LTS) which means the software repos get updates for the available stuff for 5 years from launch.
yay
Congratulations
Literally thanks to you!! For your time and efforts 🤠
I wasn't expecting someone would help me with my situation 😅
do this in the next hour or so. all my points listed.
Win7 and linux dual boot
u got Grub menu with auto-timer right?
from which u can also pick Windows 7 to launch...
u may now also use ventoy to boot live again and resize your drive to whatever u want.
with gparted. (must be done in live mode only)
Yeah
The only task left to be done
simple resize the linux partition (shrink it). then edit the resulting grey space to be NTFS.
and label it.
From live mode only
yes.
i would also use a stopwatch, and write down exactly how long it takes to load:
- Windows 7
- Linux Mint 20.3
from the moment you press Enter on the Grub menu item, until the desktop fully loads all its icons and taskbar stuff.
and write that down. so u know the baseline on healthy system.
just good for your own information.
when you get a pc or possibly upgrade this one with a SSD (solid state drive) you'll be amazed at the speed difference.
wdym?
Free space preceing ...new size...... Free space following
um
just drag the right edge of the rectangle leftwards
then then numbers will change accordingly
dont drag the whole rectangle though
just the right-hand edge
I'd leave Linux Mint at LEAST with 60 GiB
I left 50🌝🌚
if u start saving pictures a lot there.. idk it's hard to change it later
Don't worry windows is for data
yes
save this photo now. or rename it to something good.
u may want it for reference at some point
Doing it
or save it off of Discord when u log into Win 7, or Mint.
I'll make a folder on drive for linux only
😹
I don't know why we wasted time on FAYE
yes in that folder, save critical screenshots. plus text note files with handy commands n notes.
Ubuntu based things are premium 🤣
or you can make that folder in your Documents folder in Linux Mint.
so u will have easy access to notes there.
oh and another thing I would REALLY change, is turn OFF the "Hide File extensions for known filetypes" in Windows. if the file extensions are hidden, as they are by default, it's too easy to accidentally launch a malware exe (executable) file which can be a virus. If u can see the file extension in the name, it helps be more cautious.
in Windows, .com, .exe, .bat, .msi , .scr (screensaver) files are executable as programs
also check out Hypnotix in Mint. it has a free-tv playlist that has some international channels u can watch internet-based TV on ur computer. (not all channels work, but many do)
and be sure to watch some Youtube vids (especially by the creator 'ExplainingComputers' on Linux Mint newbie stuff.
This is in Windows Explorer 'preferences/ View options' btw.
That's for sure!
You should start a YouTube channel 😹
Joe Collins Linux channel is also good for relaxing explanations on Mint to fall asleep to.
i learned from EC and Joe.
What do you professionally do
electrical stuff
not professionally.
@wheat junco now win7 is running with sda2
that's fine
@wheat junco making notes for linux! would you like to add something from your side?
ya i have some notes

@wheat junco how can I change time format? I've turned off the 24hrs format but it's still same
System Settings > Date & Time > Use 24h clock
not working!
i don't want 24hrs format
i want to add AM PM
@wheat junco
tried it terminal but didn't workout
no
.
u can change it there. then restart Cinnamon if necessary
Grub is always visible now! without making any change haha!
alt+F2 then r
don't mess with that. it's very unnecessary and over ur head
the clock applet has its own settings
uncheck custom date format
do u want it to show the date on one line?
damn! i have fixed it same as i wanted
i was watching move in chrome win 7 it was lagging... the frames i mean but when i tried the same on linux it's smooth
this is the time code u can replace after the date part in the Custom field.. (replacing %H:%M)
yeah i bet in Firefox in Mint it's very good too.
u can get the "Improve Youtube" extension in Firefox to skips video ads.
@low yacht
it worked without messing with code
ok
i just had to turn off and turn on the right settings
ya simpler is always better
at first i felt messy but now getting familiar with mint
i never had to put manual time codes in for this distro.. but I gave them to you anyway
Reference: https://linux.die.net/man/3/strftime
%l (hour - 12hr format 1 to 12)
%M (minute)
%P (am or pm lowercase)
%p (am or pm uppercase)%S (seconds)
%r (time in a.m. or p.m. notation. In the POSIX locale this is equivalent to %I:%M:%S %p.)
%I (hour 12-hr clock 01 to 12 using two digits)
%R (full 24 hr time)
%T (full 24 hr time including seconds)
note that ^
i believe it is a capital i, not a lowercase L
I l
copied
i was using iris as blue light filter in win 7 is there any way use the filter in linux
iris blue light filter
oh the top one is a lowercase L, and the bottom one for 12hr clock using 2 digits for hour is a capital i
i think it comes in Mint.. check settings for Redshift
if the default settings are horrible, and it doesn't give you a graphical way to adjust, then I'll give u the proper settings
lol
u never explored the welcome screen?
u can do it from Welcome screen (search by that name in start menu)
or by Themes/ Appearance (see in System settings, or search menu)
its just blinking on the screen
blinking?
after clicking to the redshift my screen is going yellow and normal within gap of 2 secs
oh it's alternating that way.
need to adjust the settings of the program
see if there's a redshift lighbulb icon in the notification area of the panel
is there?
done! now using dark mode
yeah
now its not blinking
ofc, u quit the program
it's gone screen is now yellow
done
ok, it opened to yor home folder right?
yup
done
then go into the .config folder
scroll thru its contents, near bottom where text files are.. see if there is a "redshift.conf" file
ok, right click blank area in the file area there.. pick create new > blank file
name it redshift.conf exactly
done
go into it, (double click should open with a text editor
; Global settings

; the second screen.
;[vidmode]
;screen=1
copy and paste the above into it. Notice the lat= and lon= fields are blank..
do i have to add an editor file in that folder?
no just double click the blank file
a file is a blank file whose icon looks like white paper
a folder is a folder that is yellow
or green, in ur case
paste the above, then enter your latitude, and longitude, as found on Google Maps
search your general city there, and copy the latitude, and longitude from the google address bar
4 decimal places is plenty enough
26.9124° N, 75.7873° E
that's just so it knows your general time zone
so it knows when to change the screen colour based on time of day /sunset
i keep it yellow all the time
erase the N and E
delete the degrees symbols
only the numerical values stay.. then,
if u want to keep it all day and night,
set the temp day and temp night to equal values.. 6100 is fair but not very yellow.. 5650 is more yellow, as would be 5600.. anything below 5000 is disgusting, in my opinion.
to be honest current value is fine
well it hasnt taken effect yet
oh
but anyway, set both day n night to 6100, and u can adjust later.. also the gamma values affect Red, Green, and Blue respectively.
u can make them all equal to .9 or .8 or .7, or tweak.. each time u save the file, u must quit redshift, and restart it to see the change.
what should i value it?
A
i'd leave the gamma values alone as is for now n see how it goes
or try 5900 for the night value
u'll see a difference when it goes from day time to dark.. (just for fun) u can later change exactly what u prefer
then save the file, delete the green folder u may have made earlier if by accident.
then start Redshift from the menu
it will take effect with new values.
u can also right click it, and choose Start at login , for autostart
right clicking the lightbulb icon, i mean
failed to run redshift
re-edit the file.
no spaces between the = and the numbers in the lat/lon
do you use decimal points (periods) for decimals in your locale, or commas?
what do you mean
is your system set up to display 75-point-7873 with a comma or a dot?
dot i guess
I dont think it should matter though for the purposes of the file.
try to comment out the three things:
- location-provider
- lat
- lon
by putting a ; infront of them
then save the file, and restart redshift
no. make it like the other lines which have a ";" infront of them (they are comments)
oh, also delete all those > symbols.. that's what's messing it up
this.. then revert the changes u just did with the ;
isn't there any way to delete them all with a single click?
; Global settings
[redshift]
temp-day=6500

it should look exactly like that except for the temp-day and temp-night values
delete all, then repaste from below
or from what I just put ^^
just change the day n night to what u had.
6100 and 5900 respectively
worked
coollllllll
now u know how to adjust it for next time.. and set the Autostart thing as i said
it's not showing the bulb icon on task bar
screen is blinking

isn't there anything like end task ?
alt + ctlr + delete
@wheat junco are you there
Yeah was a little busy just now
2 ways to kill it.
screen is sh*t now
switch user... cancel...log out
oops not that sorry
that's all i'm getting with that
it's purple??
yeah
killall redshift-gtk
also if u need to log out real quick, just type Ctrl-Alt-Backspace (and save that to your mind/ notes)
no process found!
do this then
i g2g a bit.
worked
thanks!
we will play with it later when you are free
i need speed meter too
you can get this from Applets. (seach in start menu, or right click panel, add applets)
Click the add/remove tab in Applets, search more online, search "Download and Upload Speed" or vice versa.. click the get or plus sign, then go into the first tab, and put a checkmark on it to enable it/make it active on the panel.
- u may move its location on panel by entering edit mode on right click, and drag it
- right click the applet itself and setup configuration - PICK WIRELESS OR WIRED interface as applicable, and set to display kiloBITS/s (recommended) or kilobytes/s.
@wheat junco
click Download tab, search it there
it doesn't work. Giving me no search result for // Net // net speed meter // upload and download speed //
finally visible to applet
i have downloaded it but where to star using it?
.
unable to see PICK WIRELESS OR WIRED
is it working or not? only have to change it if it doesn't show network traffic currently. It may be called Interface in the config. eth would ethernet, and wls or wlan would be for Wifi
it's wlp3
now i have changed the network interface settings and it has stated working
I told you.
😋
those 3 letter interface codes are always prone to change a tiny bit from pc to pc
@low yacht did you try to time how long it takes to startup Mint (from the moment u press enter on mint option in the Grub menu til the desktop fully loads its icons) ?
i barely shut it down
often leave it on sleep
btw i just got a ssd stata 2.5
oh nice
i count the boot time. it's 27 sec for win7
and 35-40 sec for linux
@wheat junco further I want to delete chrome and use mozila. how can i do that?
good day. 😄
those times are pretty decent
especially for a mechanical hard drive
which OS are you talking about for the browsers?
currently using mozila
now it feels like i should switch to chrome
would that be a good choice?
it could be better since a got a SSD
as i mentioned ealier
neat
you gotta make up your own mind
i wannna use the fastest one
if you're talking about for linux, keep both.
good to have a backup one, in case of some unforeseen incident
sure!
I'd stick with Firefox. from experience, it seems to scroll Youtube faster
you can set it to be default browser in its own settings. Often it will ask you if you don't set that preference
I will do that
@wheat junco i have one more query! I have wifi but i don't know the password neither my brother is going to tell me because he's nerd due to my studies. I have access to router i don't want to reset neither i can use wps nearby connect. I tried plugin Ethernet cable coming from router to my laptop it was working but how can i know the password of wifi
once you use wps, it should already have retained to necessary logon details to connect to that router
the other possibility is to connect to the router via ethernet cable, then administer it IF the router has the factory password still intact and not changed
@low yacht get me so far?
wps is disabled i guess..... and admin page access has been changed too
I thought you said wps was working earlier
u checked underneath the router to see there's a factory sticker that says the default setup id and password, as well as the setup address?
yes it shows that all
i tried to use that IP to access the admin page with pass and username
but invalid
but when i use the ethernet cable to my laptop it work
yeah for general network access sure
but that's strange you know when i'm using ethernet i can use internet but not wifi
what's that
they're two different connections
an access point
but if ur brother is mean and unplugs it, you're screwed again
could you please explain
Connections
An AP connects directly to a wired local[3] area network, typically Ethernet, and the AP then provides wireless connections using wireless LAN technology, typically Wi-Fi, for other devices to use that wired connection. APs support the connection of multiple wireless devices through their one wired connection.
In computer networking, a wireless access point, or more generally just access point (AP), is a networking hardware device that allows other Wi-Fi devices to connect to a wired network or wireless network. As a standalone device, the AP may have a wired connection to a switch or router, but, in a wireless router, it can also be an integral compo...
that would have to plug in to router via an ethernet cable, and to power; the cable can be long or short
do i have to buy AP?
it will create its own Wifi signal, separate from the router's own wifi
that or pay ur brother for the home wifi password 😛
u can also use a cheap 2nd Wifi router as AP , it would have to be set as BRIDGE (REPEATER) mode
see vid near bottom ^
yeah something like that, but just keep in mind you'll also need a long enough cable to go from the router to the ceiling or wall near your area
the main advantage of this device is that it brings a wifi signal closer to you (via a cable)
The device also consumes a small amount of power, as the description says, a PoE (Power over Ethernet) injector is included, to send power from close to the source (the router, power outlet) over the ethernet cable itself, to the AP
Also, I'm not really sure how WiFi security and administration would be set up with this device, but I'm sure it's easily researched.
so it's basically like i 'm using Ethernet cable to run internet
btw, firefox gets crash a few times as far as i have experienced personally
@wheat junco further i would like to reset my redshift
get applet Qredshift, it's easier
ur branching out from main router with cable and making your own wifi hotspot essentially
finally got it
should i uninstall redshift?
no
@wheat junco is there any way to reset redshift?
you'd have to just edit the conf file back to how it was earlier in this chat
i have deleted that file since it made a mess
and it was not existing before we edited
so i thought things would be normal
scroll up
i tried to run redshift and it didn't make a mess
.
u can get Qredshift from applets shop. it gives point and click customizing the screen colour temperature and gamma, and runs on the redshift core
.
please edit the tags on this post as solved.
done! check now
sorry i wasn't available here
done! it's working as i wanted it
awesome! have a nice time
all thanks to you man! trust me no one ever helped me this much in life\
hehe! you're welcome. Any other things in future, dont be afraid to see the Documentation guides listed in linuxmint.com, or open a new support ticket in this server!
@wheat junco I regret to inform you that min't isn;t working as fast as i expected
that's alright. did it slow down or just wasnt as quick from start?
if u have room on your Ventoy usb drive, I suggest giving Q4OS Trinity desktop version a try, and also antix (full) a try. u can save both iso's and copy them to the same usb and choose which to boot at ventoy menu on restart.
to be honest it wasn't that fast since the beginning as we expected
further i would like to inform you that we have an ssd this time
250gb
neat. I'm running Antix on a computer almost as old as yours.. with an SSD, and it's quite decent
Whats antix
What should i do now ? Switch to ssd or should i try Q4OS without any changes
both really.
https://q4os.org/ there's that one. the Downloads section is where u will find the stuff.. get the Trinity live cd version
Antix is another debian based OS that I mentioned I'm using and it's made for old pc's to run fast n decent.
There is Lubuntu too
mint xfce isnt that speedy tbh. it's barely there. Linux Lite or MX linux xfce is slightly better
lubuntu which now runs lxqt desktop may be alright
if u have about 10 GB free on ur ventoy usb, u can try them all
I'd probably go with q4 trinity first
yes
i still remember you talked about q4os KDE plasma
seems like q4os is even lighter than antix
i googled about it and watched some of the UI pictures
i would not say so, but it is more familar to use
Q4OS is available in both 64-bit and 32-bit versions. Minimum basic hardware requirements include a 300-MHz Pentium, 128 MB Ram and 3 GB of hard drive space.
//
512MB RAM is the recommended minimum for antiX. Installation to hard drive requires a minimum 7.0GB hard disk size
system req of both
512MB RAM is the recommended minimum for antiX. Installation to hard drive requires a minimum 7.0GB hard disk size
Lies. it install in 6 Gigs, and fresh idles at 200 MB RAM when viewed by htop
oh
gotcha
which one should i try?
which one is your fav?
q4os or antix
what is the difference?
antix uses a nicely done implementation of the extremely light ICE window manager and that's what makes it very snappy. It still behaves like a regular desktop though for the most part
comes up to date with software and modern or slightly older kernel (user's choice) and is based on Debian
Q4OS Trinity primary objective is familiarity (mostly with Windows XP users) It is also kept up to date and based on modern Debian. it runs a traditional full desktop environment, which is also pretty fast as Trinity is based on the old KDE 3 look and feel. has a lot of easy to change looks with its style-changer, comes with desktop sounds. and a Profiler that installs more stuff to your system as you see fit, after the main installation.
ya but plasma will run slow on ur old computer
trinity too?
no
which is better looking and performance wise? trinity or antix
this is AntiX on my old core2 Duo from late 2007 running presently, with some minimal theme adjustments
u really should try each and see.
that's the default trinity look ^
but it does come with that easy lookchanger thing, u can just install it from the welcome screen
that's somcthing better
it's like my taste
i like dark themes
like mint
hate white UI
why are you using old laptop
my newer one broke sort of
oh
it would be my last try to make things faster
with linux
aafter tthis i will have to use ssd
the Antix distro allows u to test it and save changes u make throughout reboots in the live mode (it comes with user-activatable persistence, if one wishes)
though i found it still is slightly faster when installed properly
The SysVinit, 64 bit full version
yup
@wheat junco do i have to boot it in normal mode or grub2 mode
always normal
What to choose now... Legacy kernel or modern kernel
legacy. it's a bit less bloated and fine for ur case
mkay
the key areas to explore are - the right click menu (aka the start menu)
the Control Center for just about anything u need to change
the IceWM Manager button on the quicklaunch toolbar on the taskbar
and the toolbar manager which lets u add, remove, or shift shortcut launchers on that bar
icewm manager has a section for everything.. including changing the themes, wallpapers (not many are included but some are, and ofc u may add)
explore the SMTube player which is a handy and very fast browser for Youtube.. it should launch MPV, the video player when needing to view a YT vid
right clicking the volume icon OR picking 'pulse audio volume control' from the Multimedia submenu in start menu will allow u to customize volume levels for sound
i think either control center or icewm manager has a thing for 'adjust brightness' to vary the screen brightness
- pressing the "Windows" key on your keyboard brings up start, one tap of the arrow keys DOWN will highlight "app select" running this allows you to search any installed app on the system by a few letters of input
Checking it all
Firefox Extended Support Release is included. Antix (just like MX linux, its slightly heavier sister distro) includes both Synaptic Package manager and the super quick n easy "Antix Package Installer" if u wanna quickly add popular other applications from its first tab.. or every known Debian application from its second tab (stable repo)
Lets install
and if u think that's fast, running SMTube browser with its foundation of mpv is crazy fast performant, even HD vid
do u plan on running it over the SSD?
so where do u want to install to?
Hdd it self
ok. so overwriting Mint?
Yeah
ok. do u have any bookmarks or files to save from Mint?
Currently I've hdd with 500gb space after sdd it would be 250gb only
No! I've stopped keeping data... Everything is saved on google now
So no worries
what about browser bookmarks?
I never had
ok
I save pages in google saved
ur sound/ wifi, resolution, colour all is working fine in antix now?
Yeah
idk if u use microphone at all
But i dont know how to change brightness
but if u need to test mic, use www.vocaroo.com
of course u may need to turn on or turn up the mic input in 'pulseaudio volume control'
brightness i think is in control center- hardware stuff
i know for sure it has it
im on another distro at the moment 😛
Which one
an old, discontinued but lovely one called Chalet OS.. same pc
i got a triple boot 😛
😹🤣🤣🤣🤣 what do you do with all these distros
I have Windows 7 cuz it's still decent. Chalet I put on it about 5 years ago. then i didnt realize i could update the browser to a bit newer version still, so i added AntiX
Help me to install antix
i was recently surprised though, that even though Chalet (and Ubuntu 16.04 that it's based on) has been discontinued, I STILL was able to update the browser to Firefox 88!
ok so it's same as last time mostly. the installer will look different
there is one key thing in it regarding "active partition" that absolutely must be given attention
Linux community should make something very similar to win7
some guy did. it's called Winux7 and runs the Cinnamon desktop in latest form
also ChaletOS did.
I just tun thr installer and it ran a losing check now says installation media js corrupt
*is
Which one is best linix distro
Yeah! Just to show you
alright well hopefully it works the 2nd time
that's incase u wanna use ventoy to verify ^
hannah montana linux
if only it was still supported ...
no lie that was a good one
time-period-correct and everything
How to check
reboot witk ventoy, pick the iso, then it's in the options
yes @low yacht just like u did last time with Mint
Aren't these steps mentioned on websites
Step by step
u did it last time for lmde, how u didnt learn yet?
check vento.net re> verify feature
