#trying to install another os using manjaro
276 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
@ebon merlin I'm in
in that screen/picture, go down n disable CSM support
and change the "storage boot option control" to UEFI and Legacy
and the "Other PCI device ROM priority" .. idk tell me what options it says
also Disable "Fast Boot" in that same screen
I don't see it
Uefi only / legacy only / disabled
so fast boot = turned to OFF
CSM support = " " OFF
Storage boot option control = UEFI
Other PCI Rom device = UEFI..
Yeha
manjaro wouldnt have done any changes in BIOS.. it was just installed legacy mode probably.
save n exit, n boot to ventoy
also regarding slow transfers to USB, make sure u plug flash stick to BLUE ports not other colours.
u didnt hit the key to access the USB drive
the Temporary Boot Priority thing
Yeah usb 3
I did ?
should have shown UEFI USB drive, which u must pick, then u get into the VEntoy screen
It did get into the ventoy and the it did show windows and Ubuntu and none of them workss
that's kind of odd.
Btw i have unetbootin thing but idk how to install it , it's.bin
well, u can change all the BIOS settings you just did (except Fast Boot) back to how they were in the picture.. then remove ventoy , and remake it with MBR
Ok
by the way, when u remade the ventoy earlier.. did it show up like this:
very important that it had been done right.. especially the circle on the right side "Ventoy in Device"
otherwise, just wastin' time
Oh okay
odd that despite the settings I had u change in the BIOS, it didnt take to either ISO
well if u want to retry, Options menu> clear ventoy
then close it. Relaunch it, choose MBR (i think default anyway) and re-add the stuff
Doesn't work either
u remade ventoy, it says MBR on both sides of the picture?
and u reset all these settings to this original way?
might be your USB port, or the USB itself
Might get a normal windows usb and just erase everything on the drives and retry
Thx anyways
i've seen this before.. changing ports miraculously works.. or corrupted drives
Corrupted usb ?
mhm
im not saying that it is FOR SURE, but could be
I was somehow able to flash another distro to the usb
But like ... With balena etcher instead
Ventoy kinda weird
Ventoy can be hit or miss depending of some computers sometimes, I had the same issues between 2 different laptops
One works perfectly
The other one doesn't work at all
I think ventoy killed the stick 😥
Why is it 0gb !!!!
Uh, that's odd, I've never seen that
How does the drive looks in gparted
um. thought u had put Etcher on it already.. why u launch this again?
...
I hoped from manjaro to debian
Manjaro too hard
well that's good. but if you successfully installed Debian, why is your stick showing like that?
unless it was trash to start with.. hence yesterday's fiasco
Idk , tried flashing the windows using Woeusb lol
I plugged and unplugged to many times i guess lol
yes if some usb drive isnt done writing, and it doesnt have a light that flashes, and u pull it out.. BAM.
done.
even if the operating system says it finished writing, i don't pull it out for at least a minute afterwards..
especially if the stick has no indicator light
yeah I've had two sticks go to that same way, both from writing big ISO's n them freezing partway thru
Was writing the iso , then canceled 😭
is it choppy?
Alot of frame skippinng
does it show a healthy pre-buffer on the youtube seek bar?
Yeah
i can see there the connection speed is pretty darn low.. 330 Kbps
what's the rated speed of your internet service provider package that you are subscribed to?
Even on 144p it drops
if u know.
On other devices it can run 720@60 fine
are u on Firefox browser?
Yess
go into Firefox settings, type in the search field 'accel'
it should find a thing for "Hardware acceleration", enable it.
after you do that, check something else
yeah check the box that says use recommended. and the one that says hardware acceleration when available, and also the one that says "use autoscrolling"
Okay
Weird thing is that I'm losing frames mostly when I'm moving the cursor 😂
@ebon merlin it's not losing much frames, but when i move the mouse cursor it starts lagging alot
what CPU u have, and its clock speed? check with inxi -Fxxxz in terminal
@hearty dagger
i see it
So'.....
well that all looks fast enough
check ur internet speed with this computer https://pcmag.speedtestcustom.com/
this is a good site to test with ^
I mean i was able to play 1080@60 on windows with no frame drops at all
still troubleshooting here.
I'm using mobile data for now since I've got some issues with my home internet for now .....
I usually have 50 Mbps net
ok but please do the test
Okay
the site will show a nice summary showing ping, latency, all the good stuff
share a screenshot after
Finding optimal server ..... Bruh
ya that should only take a few seconds... 10 seconds max.. then it gives u a Go button
if it's taking longer than 10 seconds to find an optimal server, then ur internet is having issues
I'm tethering with my phone mobile data lol
ping is how much time it takes to receive a reply, and urs shows double of mine
jitter on urs is also terrible
Mine is usually 50-60 Mbps but 10 ping
and ur download speed is.. pretty crap
try the same test, same website with just ur phone.. disconnect it from the PC when u try
weird. maybe your cell carrier is very busy this time of day, or they throttled your speed for the month becuz u used too much bandwidth
but u need at least 1.5 Mbps for smooth youtube playback at 480 resolution
good idea
With vlc or what
vlc is generally very good
when u set up Debian, did u leave the Root user thing blank, during the installer?
@hearty dagger
Yeah why ?
It's working okay
The system is just unstable idk why , other distros are worse
Especially arch and manjaro
what do u mean by unstable?
Sluggish
oh sorry to hear that
u mean in opening the start menu, opening file manager?
type inxi -G at command line
it might be this thing I saw there earlier about xwayland
Booting Loading times are very fast i have an nvme
did u run an update and upgrade on this system since u installed it?
I do apt upgrade now ?
yes
Okk
leap of faith
Download speed is random going from 100 kb/s to 1 mb/s lol
ok.. well just give it time,
dont mess with anything else til it's done.. unless it's in ur kitchen and involving food 😛
how is it now after the updates, @hearty dagger ?
I'm going to check i guess
Gotta check for performance tho
@ebon merlin more stable now i guess*
oh nice
maybe time of day. shrugs
can check again now
and if u want an internet speed meter on your taskbar, open Synaptic Package Manager (u should already have that) and search for xfce4-goodies
well that's why your Youtube's working smooth now
check how it is with Firefox, even at 720p
Okay
see the Jitter value has gone way down.. which means better overall connection
Lags abit
I mean chrome does better
alright
use whatever works, but I know for me, even old-firefox from over 20 versions ago works lovely.
it's important that on the seek bar u see a bit of white line ahead of the red line (pre-buffer)
what's that from?
Chrome
ok
Idk but uuuh ... Firefox was using opus (idk if it has anything to do lol)
btw ur Debian should also come with two graphical package managers.. Synaptic, and gnome-Software (aka Software)
Yeah
opus is an audio codec.. i dont think it matters that much.
Lol
U can view all updates available and even hold some back/de-select with gnome-software
if the system is in a well enough state right now, I highly recommend you install (or maybe it's there) Timeshift, and do at least a manual timeshift snapshot backup
i dont care for it
anything from the REPOS (native debian packages) is better than anything else for stability, and takes less space than other formats
Do they have a site ?
the debian packages?
Yeah like a list of avaiable packages
u can fire up Synaptic package manager, OR the gnome-software and u'll see
that's where they both pull from (though be careful in gnome-software, sometimes there's two versions of the same program offered as a Flatpak or a native deb pkg. - the native one will say from "Debian whatevercodename version 12 is"
synaptic is better for fine-tooth examining all kinds of native packages, including libraries, helper files, fonts, etc.
should avoid flatpaks ?
and in synaptic it pulls ONLY from the repos
i would unless ur DESPERATE for a latest version or something u can't get as a deb (bear in mind the first 5 to 10 flatpaks will be Gigabytes huge)
u can get discord , skype, zoom, google earth, all from their official websites as .debs
and ur Debian should come with a handy tool called gdebi, which installs deb packs for u
got discord and chrome as .deb and telegram as .tar
search gnome-software for Telegram instead.. tar files are raw code that u have to compile (way too advanced crap, and hard to uninstall later)
somehow managed to install it lol
technically a tar file is like an uncompressed zip file (it's a cluster pack of other files)
so for the .deb i have to manually update each time ?
im not 100% how it is for skype or google earth, or chrome.. i think it might update via gnome-software center or the terminal.. but not sure. For Discord, typically it sends u a message , and when u click ok, it sends u a new deb file.. u just save it, double-click it, and gdebi does its magic
Nice
check in ur start menu for gdebi
and for synaptic pkg mgr (u should have both)
as well as the program called simply Software
Ah
(which is officially known as gnome-software)
if u care and want to keep ur system, definitely get Timeshift n save a backup very, very soon
if u fk everything up, u can use Timeshift to get it all back to how it's working tonight.
I will
just dont have it capture ur homefolder (use copy/paste to save your home data or another backup tool like grsync if u value it)
I don't have important data on my pc i guess
well certainly not at the moment, but u may in time.
I'm saving stuff in my phone 😭
ie - a memorable collection of pics.. a handy note/text file ... etc
and backup ur phone too. if it goes BANG or u get mugged, that's all gone in an instant
I have computer files on my phone , i just transfer them with usb
How do i backup ?
On pc ?
backup to google drive (if u trust them with the data) AND transfer from phone to a safe home usb or something
also if u pay for mobile internet, and u have many, many gigs of stuff on ur phone, u may exceed monthly limit to upload.. or exceed google drive's free limit. - just be aware
Not using it that much
dont ever download or upload anything illegal either cuz obv the net isnt that private.
My drive is just random memories and Html and css files lol
but if u trust cloud based storage like iCloud, OneDrive by microsoft, or GoogleDrive , or even this thing called NextCloud, then that's certainly a start for backing up ur phone
also get this if u want the couple extra goodies including a network traffic monitor for your panel.
search it, mark the empty small square for install, hit apply button.
what distro are you using ?
i downloaded it
cool. you can also just have the two bars for the meter without the text beside, and u can change the graph colours, but that's all up to you.
