#tried putting SSD from beat-up laptop into newer one, can't find a boot device
41 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
the old busted PC was likely using legacy BIOS bootup, so its OS on the ssd is set up that way.
your current PC that you're testing on, probably has UEFI boot setup, but it can be set to CSM/Legacy in the BIOS config
see what the enter BIOS key is after u power on the device
then enter it
snap some pics n send here n maybe I can help

yeah check it.. record pictures incase u have to revert.. do some research on it
i g2g a while but bbl
You will need a ventoy usb with linux mint and windoz iso to troubleshoot this.
Then reconfigure the UEFI to work with the new drive

You need it if you want to use it. Also reconfigure your bios. If your drive was booting on legacy mode and has windowz, you need to convert it to GPT
hi
not him, but I just saw some activity
You might need a live usb but I'm thinking it's just what I said yesterday. a slight tweak to the BIOS mode, and your newer pc with the old ssd should be up and running in hardly any time
Yup. From what I read, they got the drive from another system. If it was on legacy, it needs to be on GPT then configure the bios
Which version of mint was it running? Was it running on legacy mode?
then again the Toshiba Satellite L735 seems to be old.. so now Im thinking they're both on classic BIOS mode
3rd gen i-series.. would put it around 2011 or 2012
You could backup your data from that mint installation and clean install mint. But be sure if you're booting on UEFI or legacy mode. Set your bios to pure UEFI and disable secure boot. You will still need a ventoy usb with mint and windoz isos.
Do you want to just boot mint?
IF, he even has UEFI at all
They can boot mint on legacy tbh
as a rescue disk thingy
To be able to boot mint iso from it and windowz if you ever want to dual boot
ventoy is a loader thing that lets a regular usb stick boot like a bootable CD or rescue disk
pay close attention to the categories "Boot" , and "Configuration"
in it
You still need a ventoy usb to check the drive status, what data does it have, and to know if the system was booting on legacy or uefi mode. Also to reinstall it because that mint was configured for s completely different hardware
that will show if devices are set to boot UEFI mode (i dont think the age of ur machine has it though)
the reason a Ventoy USB with a mint ISO is handy is becuz it can self boot, and then u can study the boot-sector of the SSD to determine where u stand
Best thing to do is to backup the data off the SSD, configure the bios then clean install mint@left kindle
and that ^
I don't think the SSD was damaged, but a live usb has a tool called DISKS which can do tests on it to determine its health.
Can't tell. But that's the easiest solution
I can do that in an hour
