#unable to make a booting device

I lost my sanity 1-2 hours ago. i have a USB drive that i think works?? i bought one that never worked, returned it to the shop, and how have a fresh one. my USB connects to my windows desktop, but appears to have autonomy and just disconnect if it wants to. whatever it does, belenaEtcher fails to make a booting device somehow. i dont get any descriptive error messages at all. i also can try WSL or some shit to make the device instead

#

is possible to do this in the terminal of WSL for example?

shrewd granite
#

WSL is technically emulated, so I am not sure if it is a good idea to do hardware things with it. If a drive disconnects without apparent reason, the port might be failing. The Windows versions of Etcher and Ventoy should be fine for this, but you should first make sure you are working with an intact USB port.

neat citrus
#

i made what appears to be further progress with rufus

#

now ive made it to where linux mint is atleast bootable

#

but its struggling with the installation

shrewd granite
#

Rufus has known issues with Mint ISOs.

neat citrus
#

oh

shrewd granite
#

Etcher or Ventoy are recommended, both are known-good for this.

neat citrus
#

i never got past this shit

#

flash failed always

#

this is so frustrating i want to cry, and or quit trying

shrewd granite
#

You gotta hate programs that adapt the Windows-type "it broke" sort of error message, instead of actually saying what the problem is. Perhaps use Ventoy? It is pretty neat.

neat citrus
#

i can certainly try

shrewd granite
#

Make sure nothing else is trying to access the medium, and when in doubt, try a different USB port.

neat citrus
#

i have tried 2

shrewd granite
#

What brand is that medium?

neat citrus
#

PNV

shrewd granite
#

I know PNY, but PNV is new. Let's hope it is not one of those "please-kill-me-nobody-wants-me-in-China" trash things.

neat citrus
#

oh

#

it is PNY, my bad

#

ive walked around thinking it was PNV all day lol. bought it today with the intent to use it as a booting device only

shrewd granite
#

PNY is alright. Not great, but should get the job done. Try Ventoy with it - it works differently than Rufus or Etcher, just makes the medium itself bootable with a small stub driver, then looks for ISOs that you loaded onto it - just copy them over.

neat citrus
#

ventoy i am unable to install from curseforge rn

shrewd granite
neat citrus
#

this one doesnt let me. curseforge just keeps counting down and resetting

#

might be allergic to some firefox extension i use

shrewd granite
#

It is sourceforge, and this may be a good point to drop the link into Edge just to get the file. Assuming you did not fortify Edge quite that hard.

neat citrus
#

good point. imma do tha from there

#

now installing without problems

shrewd granite
#

Once it is done, you can copy as many OS ISOs onto it as will fit. You can even mix Windows and Linux ISOs, it will show you a selecting screen on boot.

neat citrus
#

uh

#

ok. ventoy appears installed now. run the .exe ?

shrewd granite
#

I guess so.

neat citrus
#

corrupted block detected

shrewd granite
#

I guess you really do have a faulty medium.

neat citrus
#

that is 2 in a row

#

i dont get it, is my pc destroying them??

#

this is getting absurd, wtf do i do

shrewd granite
#

It is possible that you have a faulty USB port that eats them. It is also possible that the store you get them from got a whole load of broken ones. I have experienced that myself once. Supermarket flash media are the worst of the worst in drive quality usually.

neat citrus
#

i shop at elkjøp

neat citrus
#

and fixing my pc sounds like a nightmare holy sht

shrewd granite
#

It would help to do a proper hardware check on the medium, but it has been years since I did that with Windows, not sure what is good for it these days.

neat citrus
#

tbh i am desperate for some actionable steps

#

i already probably deleted the windows partition from the fresh laptop, and needed a microsoftaccount anyways to even boot windows

#

i dont comprehend

shrewd granite
#

The system you are working from currently is your desktop, on Windows?

neat citrus
#

yeah

#

gonna try a hail mary and see if ubuntu somehow works

#

throwing shit against the wall figuratively. im hesitant to go get yet another usb stick 😦

#

maybe PNY is bad for what im trying

shrewd granite
#

It either works, or it does not. But if you have anything else that can be booted, an SD card (assuming there is a reader on that laptop), even an external hard drive could do it.

#

If all else fails, you could actually burn an ISO to a DVD, assuming you have a DVD writer and the laptop can read them.

neat citrus
#

would a usb extender or somethng to make it so that my (future non broken) usb stick can be protected from my usb port?

shrewd granite
#

We cannot say for sure that the port is broken. You could try and check the medium with scandisk, or whatever is used these days.

neat citrus
#

i did inspect the usb with some windows tool that was built in

shrewd granite
#

It is supposed to detect bad sectors and flag them, so they will not be used. Which could be enough to "repair" the file system to work.

neat citrus
#

oh

#

gonna go get a new usb stick

#

and gonna try to find some thing to be in hte middle of my port and usb

#

Any usb sticks bis?

brittle topaz
neat citrus
#

Hello! We discussed a bit about a month ago

brittle topaz
#

hi

#

well did u exchange the USB again?

neat citrus
#

Yes

#

Now got a sandisk

brittle topaz
#

much better brand typically

neat citrus
#

Gonna restrict myself to only the usb ports in the back

#

See if that helps

brittle topaz
#

YES. what I'd try, is simply put it in.. copy some mp3's over

#

or even one iso .. no ventoy no nothing.

#

if that works just fine, then install ventoy. BUT u really should know for Ventoy installer to go in it's options menu, and pick the right partioning for ur pc

brittle topaz
#

@neat citrus to ensure it's writing proper and fine

#

and being able to read them back fine

neat citrus
#

Okay will do

#

Have loads of mp4 i can use

brittle topaz
#

tag me when u do the video files test

neat citrus
#

Oki! Eating first

brittle topaz
#

i mean, after ur happy with the results, but before doing Ventoy

#

i'll be back in half hour or so.

neat citrus
#

interesting, it already has some contents

neat citrus
#

the videos seem fine

#

@brittle topaz

#

though i have not ejected it and inserted it back or anything like that

#

just moved things, then that is that

brittle topaz
#

next step.. determine what ur system uses to boot. please open "Disk Management" in Windows

neat citrus
#

ok, on the laptop im looking to bring linux mint to i presume

brittle topaz
#

and find the drive in the display that has where u want linux to go on (i'm guessing u want it to go over windows)

#

ya

neat citrus
#

the laptop is fresh and i think i already deleted the windows partition in a previous installing attempt

brittle topaz
#

oh i see

#

so ur using two computers

neat citrus
#

yes, i have a laptop for academia, and a desktop at home for recreational use

brittle topaz
#

was it having Windows 10/11 or very old windows before?

neat citrus
#

i think windows 10/11

#

it was a version that required me to log into windows (gross) to even boot up initially

brittle topaz
#

u mean log in to Microsoft account?

neat citrus
#

yea

brittle topaz
#

ok so probably made in the last 8 or 9 years

neat citrus
#

it is a lenovo t14

#

previously used one!

brittle topaz
#

sounds fairly new

#

ok u tested u Sandisk with big files .. what was the total file MB amount that u copied to it?

neat citrus
#

~750MB

#

can also put the linux mint distro on there too as a stresstest

brittle topaz
#

cool. u ready to install?

neat citrus
#

i think so

brittle topaz
#

let's try to install ventoy now

neat citrus
#

alright

brittle topaz
#

ventoy will delete everything on the sandisk drive

neat citrus
#

its as simple as just running this yea?

brittle topaz
#

so if u wanna save those utilities that came from Sandisk (could be handy idk) then copy them elsewhere

#

^^

neat citrus
#

ill pass on the utilities yeah

brittle topaz
#

right click and run as admin on ventoy2disk

neat citrus
brittle topaz
#

go to Option, Partition stle

#

style

neat citrus
brittle topaz
#

pick GPT.

neat citrus
#

alright

brittle topaz
#

now u sure that that is the only USB drive plugged in?

#

it looks ok cuz it says Sandisk in ventoy, but always be SURE

neat citrus
#

it definitely is, though i have a keyboard and mouse plugged in also

brittle topaz
#

ok now click install button

neat citrus
#

okidoki

brittle topaz
#

give time

neat citrus
brittle topaz
#

great.. close the program, safely eject the drive

#

then remove it.. then put it back in

neat citrus
#

okay will do

#

i did!

brittle topaz
#

then open file manager, u'll see the USB stick now has a label name of "Ventoy

neat citrus
brittle topaz
#

then find ur linux iso (just do one for now) and do copy , and then paste to the empty space in the Ventoy drive

neat citrus
#

i got these

#

might aswell pick the latest one

brittle topaz
#

21.3, sure

#

3 Gigs should take about 6 minutes.. or 1/4 that if everything is usb 3+

neat citrus
#

is ventoy more "safe" than using rufus and/or balenaEtcher ?

#

70% done atm

brittle topaz
#

look at u with USB 3 speeds

neat citrus
#

hahaha yea its p quick

#

love it, maybe ill try to use this usb afterwards too, or just keep it as a permanent booting device, not sure yet

#

succesfully pasted

brittle topaz
#

after it finishes, u can add a nice wallpaper picture file u like also to the ventoy space

neat citrus
#

oo

brittle topaz
#

so u can use that file when Mint is installed

#

u can also add your favourite mp3 or a/v file (just one for test)

neat citrus
#

is mp4 ok too?

brittle topaz
#

sure

#

is it video or audio? just curious

neat citrus
#

video

brittle topaz
#

ok.. finished?

neat citrus
#

yep

#

here are the current contents

brittle topaz
#

do safely eject the drive now from windows taskbar

neat citrus
#

ejected

#

now remove it too?

brittle topaz
#

plug in to the other pc

#

then turn on, and hit the boot key to show u UEFI USB

#

and Enter..

shrewd granite
#

If you want to use that laptop quickly, might be good to just use Mint for now. Dualboot would take more time and fiddling.

brittle topaz
#

i think that other laptops been wiped anyway

neat citrus
#

im in a "startup interrupt menu" now and can choose
bios setup utility, or a temporary startup device, among other less interesting things

shrewd granite
#

temporary startup is good, otherwise known as boot menu.

brittle topaz
#

u must pick the UEFI form of Sandisk /usb

neat citrus
#

i can choose USB HDD: USB SanDisk 3.2Gen1

brittle topaz
#

then goes to Ventoy menu yes?

shrewd granite
#

That is the one

brittle topaz
neat citrus
#

now im in the ventoy menu yes

brittle topaz
#

ok w/e..

neat citrus
brittle topaz
#

hit enter, then enter

#

nah let's try it this way

neat citrus
#

boot in normal mode yeah?

brittle topaz
#

or maybe we should go back..

shrewd granite
#

UEFI boot does not always call itself that.

neat citrus
#

if i switch off the laptop do i risk damaging anything?

shrewd granite
#

nope

neat citrus
#

im not sure there is a "go back" button

brittle topaz
#

i often worry that Mint installer takes tips from whatever boot media environment it started in . so if it starts legacy way, it may install legacy way.

shrewd granite
#

That is what it does, yes

brittle topaz
#

go back, Madlor

neat citrus
#

im back in the boot menu

brittle topaz
#

i want to see if ur BIOS is starting as legacy or as UEFI rn

shrewd granite
#

Well, I need to go now. You got this.

brittle topaz
#

can u enter the BIOS options please.. or hit CTRL ALT DELETE NOW to enter bios options

#

thx Curu.. ttyl

#

show pic in BIOS options under the Bootup category

neat citrus
#

Here is startup interruption menu

#

Here is boot, corresponding to F12 above

#

sounds like u want me to navigate to BIOS Setup Utility?

brittle topaz
#

F1 to enter the BIOS setup

neat citrus
#

alright, im here

neat citrus
#

i can go to any of the following tabs, main, config, date/time, security, startup, restart

#

i assume startup is closest to bootup

brittle topaz
#

startup

neat citrus
#

Heres what im working with

brittle topaz
neat citrus
#

sounds good

brittle topaz
#

switch off Quick boot.. put to regular

#

the go to Security category.. ensure Secure boot is off

neat citrus
#

i can turn Boot Mode from Quick to Diagnostics

#

there is no other options except those two for boot mode, if that was the one

brittle topaz
neat citrus
#

alright, done. now navigating to security category

#

secure boot is disabled

brittle topaz
#

now go to Configuration category, and show pic

neat citrus
#

secure boot key state is Customized

brittle topaz
#

see what power shows

neat citrus
brittle topaz
#

switch sleep state off

#

or tell me other options for it

neat citrus
#

sleep state lets me swap to Linux

brittle topaz
#

ok is that all?

neat citrus
#

yeah, thats it. Linux or Windows 10

brittle topaz
#

k pick linux

#

go to automatic power on

#

and make sure it's NOT doing Wake on LAN

neat citrus
brittle topaz
#

leave as Disabled.. .

#

then go back to the Main category, and show pic

neat citrus
brittle topaz
#

ok. go back to Startup tab

#

looks like ur pc is indeed having a UEFI bios..

#

let me study the startup pic from before a bit

neat citrus
#

okidoki!

brittle topaz
#

select Boot Order Lock.. and what are the options for it, aside from Disabled

neat citrus
#

the only other option for Boot Order Lock is Enabled

brittle topaz
#

ok nvm

#

what about for Boot option F12, what are it's options?

neat citrus
#

as in the F12 found here?

brittle topaz
#

in the Startup category.. it's on enabled now.. what else are the possibilities

neat citrus
#

ohh i missed that

#

the options for that one is also enabled/disabled

brittle topaz
#

ok leave as it was.

#

press whatever key to save the changes, n reboot

neat citrus
#

kk

brittle topaz
#

n then show me picture of the Alternate temporary boot devices thing

neat citrus
#

I presume this dropdown menu

#

White text says «PXE Boot», in case thats hard to read

brittle topaz
#

ok go ahead with USB sandisk

#

i think it will boot fine to desktop in Mint live mode now

neat citrus
#

boot in normal mode, ye?

brittle topaz
#

takes 1.5 minutes after Ventoy splash

#

ya

neat citrus
#

start linux mint 21.3 cinnamon 64-bit, or the same + (compability mode

brittle topaz
#

first one

neat citrus
#

kk

#

oh interesting

#

in the linux mint trial thing that shows up, there is now "Linux mint 21.3 cinnamon 64-bit", aswell as "Install Linux Mint"

#

i presume install linux mint now as normal

#

awaiting some verdict on which option to pick as per precaution

brittle topaz
#

hm?

#

ur at the desktop?

neat citrus
#

yep!

brittle topaz
#

ok first we gotta do that cleanup as i mentioned

neat citrus
#

Last time i didnt see the upper desktop icon

neat citrus
brittle topaz
#

so we're going to clear off the hard drive or ssd 100% clean now

#

start menu> type gparted

neat citrus
#

i am now on gparted

brittle topaz
#

pick the hard drive or ssd of this laptop in the top right corner menu

#

then show pic

neat citrus
#

made it a tad easier for myself to share whats going on by logging in to disc here rq

neat citrus
brittle topaz
#

it's fine i see the nvme dirve

#

can u run Disks from the start menu please.. choose the same drive by clicking it and show pic

neat citrus
#

here u go

#

not sure which one so i sent all

#

presumably the second image was correct

#

nvm not so sure, but yea the right one is surely one of them

brittle topaz
#

k bud.. close disks.

neat citrus
#

disks closed

brittle topaz
#

in gparted, go to device menu thing, and pick create new partition table

#

and make it GPT

#

and ensure ur still on that nvme drive in gparted

neat citrus
brittle topaz
#

go ahead

neat citrus
#

proceeded, current status

brittle topaz
#

nice and clean and ready for your UEFI BIOS

neat citrus
#

epic

brittle topaz
#

do u have speakers connected?

#

or built in, or headphones.

neat citrus
#

not ones external to the laptop itself

brittle topaz
#

right click the sound icon in tray

neat citrus
#

i believe this thing has some dolby speakers built in

brittle topaz
#

go to sound settings

#

make sure main volume output slider is 100% then hit Test button

neat citrus
#

no sound settings, configure is the closest match i can find

brittle topaz
#

k

#

if sound works, ur all set to install Mint

neat citrus
#

probably not the right choice hmm

brittle topaz
#

FKKK

#

not that

#

type sound in the start menu

neat citrus
#

ohh

brittle topaz
#

then test as I said

neat citrus
#

sounds sounding good

brittle topaz
#

run up installer.. then first option to Erase Disk and install Mint.

#

i will link u help guide. u should be good now

neat citrus
#

sounds good

#

thoughts on multimedia codecs

#

brittle topaz
#

ya add them

#

read guide first

neat citrus
#

i see. i will read the guide again and also share this screenshot first

brittle topaz
#

hang on

neat citrus
#

hanging on

brittle topaz
neat citrus
#

alright. im clicking no and proceeding according to the guide then

brittle topaz
#

kk goodluck

neat citrus
#

thanks!

brittle topaz
#

takes overall about 10 minute or less

neat citrus
#

woohoo! it took 10 hours and 3 USB sticks, but now i have linux mint on my laptop

#

i want to express my gratefulness @brittle topaz! I appreciate your time

brittle topaz
neat citrus
#

i did

brittle topaz
#

don't forget u can plug ur sandisk back in for those vids and the wallpaper

#

and u can use "Winpinator" on Windows to easily transfer files over ur home network to your Mint PC which already has Warpinator.

#

@neat citrus

neat citrus
#

oh wow, didnt know that

#

ill try to remember that in case that comes in handy

brittle topaz
#

and u can watch some internet tv now using Hypnotix app on Mint

neat citrus
#

oh interesting

brittle topaz
#

and if u need Discord on Mint, get it from the official Discord site as a .deb (to save space as opposed to massive Flatpak)

#

deb's will be handled easily by gDebi which is part of Mint to install them

neat citrus
#

good shout

#

already installed the flatpack, ill try to remedy that asap

brittle topaz
#

PROBLEM: ISO wouldn't boot up live, having many errors
SOLUTION: Use Ventoy loader on a brand-name USB drive, and alter "Sleep mode" in BIOS settings to not be Window10, and turn off BIOS Quick Boot

brittle topaz
neat citrus
#

i try to be unambiguous :d
