#Logitech C920 webcam not detected
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
Can you find it in lsusb output when it is connected?
Nope, lsusb gives same result with it disconnected and connected
try this method: https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=363531
As in, unplug all USB devices and plug in the webcam only?
well, unplug, reboot, then just add the cam
u can set Auto-login in Settings> users
from my understanding of the article, u may add other usb stuff like mouse after it picks up the cam
I can try that sure
No luck, unplugged all USB devices, rebooted, plugged in webcam, replugged in keyboard and mouse but still not detected by lsusb, Cheese, or guvcview
Tried two different usb ports too
what u got a laptop or desktop?
Desktop, external webcam
you said the camera works on WIndows.. Does it show some green light or sign of life while plugged in while idle, on Windows?
the person in the article said they had to use a ps/2 keyboard to launch Cheese with only the cam plugged in. and that was with Mint 20.2 which had a fair bit linux kernel of v5.4
idk what's up with that tbh
is there an on switch u must hold in maybe?
For windows I just plugged it in, and it auto detected it and streamed video. Didn't check if it has a light or not, but I could tell it worked, so no button or anything as far as I can tell
i have an idea
with the cam plugged in, try modprobe in linux terminal
after that, launch guvcview or cheese and test and ensure the device shows in the list of available cams to pick from in them (hopefully the modprobe helps)
Literally just run modprobe in terminal, or with parameters? No experience with this command
yeah try just like that
it's supposed to scan something, not sure what but if it finds something unaccounted for, it should add the kernel module
Running modprobe on it's own just gives me modprobe: ERROR: missing parameters. See -h., and Cheese still doesn't work
idk see what modprobe --help gives if any clue
Not seeing much that's directly useful as far as I can tell
my system doesn't have modprobe so i cant really see
is the cam plugged to an external usb hub? if so, try direct instead
Just plugged directly in, tried both my front USB port and one in the back
try this site instead of those apps. (turn cheese off ) https://webcamtests.com/
Test your webcam online to check if it is working properly and find out useful information about it
apparently this cam has had issues for years https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=218309
Curious, I wonder why
Still nothing unfortunately
Oh huh, I tried plugging it into a different PC I have, running Debian. That can detect it just fine as Logitech, Inc. HD Pro Webcam C920. Seems the issue is perhaps mint based
ah.
try upgrading the kernel to 6.1 then via the Mint Update Manager, "view" menu
Debian's on 6.1
@fresh inlet
Apologies, was trouble shooting a bit more. I found out that if I plug the webcam into a usb hub, then plug the usb hub in, Linux can detect it no problem. Cheese worked totally fine. So thats interesting
Is there any likelihood of upgrading to 6.1 causing other issues in the future?
don't think so, but it preserves the current kernel so u may roll back if warranted
Alrighty, I'm not seeing 6.1, I do see 6.2 versions however
if cam works now, leave it
Well it works, but only with the USB hub. Still fails to detect when plugged in directly
I suppose it's fine for now, found a different hub I'm not using frequently, but still very odd bug
👍
I'll have to remember that one. Very weird, since troubleshooting USB devices usually involves plugging them directly into a PC port and not into a hub. Thanks for sharing that.
It is very bizarre, hopefully can be a help to others in the future. Still curious as to why Debian did not need the hub, wonder if it could be because of the kernel version
Actually, Debian is currently on a newer kernel than Mint. The Ubuntu LTS base is from early 2022, and Debian had a major update since then. This will turn around again to the usual state (Debian being older) this summer, when Ubuntu 24.04 LTS comes out and Mint 22 is released based on that.
Ahh interesting, maybe it's been fixed by 6.1 then, and hopefully Mint will get that fix soon enough. Kernel stuff does my head in lol
I have a C920, and I tried it with my Mint laptop - though I'm running kernel 6.7.0 - it works fine, without a hub or anything, with OBS.
hmmm - I just tested it again, with a barebones mint 21.3 (cinnamon), kernel verson 5.15 install, that I have on a USB stick, and it didn't seem to have a problem with that - I installed OBS, and it picked up the webcam no problem, with lsusb and everything
Strange! I'll see if if works for me when livebooting, pretty sure I have a stick with mint on it somewhere
Well now it seems to work without the hub just on my current install! Just unplugged the hub and plugged it in and now it's recognized? Curious
Not all USB controllers are created equal. It is probably a quirk with your specific chipset, or the driver thereof.
